  • Many people who are considered blind can still see. Here's my explanation of what it means to be legally blind.
    Definition of legal blindness: A central visual acuity of 20/200 or less in the better eye with the best possible correction, and/or a visual field of 20 degrees or less.

    thankyou for this. legal blindness sucks. i havent been able to read or write in 2 years, and i became legally blind 3 years ago. people say "oh you can still make out blurry images so youre good" but nothings actual images. just random splotches/streaks of colour. i have no idea what anything is. its not just a label for people who cant drive it can be debilitating. people think i should be able to live normally and do work without help because im not fully blind. i couldnt finish highschool cause schools dont have to help you unless youre fully blind (im not in your country so different rules i guess?). had to sit in a classroom for 8 hours a day for 2 years not knowing wtf was going on, not able to do a single written assignment or test. i barely go outside cause i was never taught how to know where im going or how not to run into people and objects or use a cane. legal blindness might not be as bad as full blindness but its still really hard to live with especially as a young person with no family or supports. i hope people will watch things like this and see legal blindness for what it actually is which is a spectrum with its own struggles

      @@CaylawithaC The hard part is being careful not to say oh look today i can make out 4 lines down and tomorrow you cant. and the 20 degrees thing can be taken to literal. i've got tons of holes in my central vision but a relatively good mid circle of peripheral well i had a relatively good mid ring.
      i'm hoping it'll be better soon getting cataract surgery. wont fix the nerve damage and i'm around -30 in my glasses as is i'm betting i start having problems with ssdi after when i have a light prescription and possibly can see a few lines down by wiggling the visual field around until i put the letter together.
      They tried a few times to cut me off.

      @@hussanshahid2789 You'd have to ask a doctor after they checked your field of view and then tested you on how well you coped without stereoscopic vision. Probably some practical tests and a driving school if you haven't done it before.
      if you live in the boonies there's a better chance of getting a hardship / restricted licence that lets you go slower than normal and such. but you may need to request it by a court motion. and have documentation showing the restrictions and such to make it safe.

    People really struggle with this concept. It never fails to amaze me just how many nurses don't understand the concept too. I can't count how many times I heard "if you're blind where's your cane?" Now that I have a cane it's "why don't you always use your cane?"
    One day I was feeling like a fraud, cuz I was somewhere I felt like I could see just fine and I didn't need my stupid cane. So I put it away, put my head up and my shoulders back and went out to get in my friend's car. The biggest problem is that it wasn't my friend's car and I about sat on some 90 year old lady's lap. Ooops!
    Was born sighted. Fully blind in my right eye now, light only. My right eye is tunnelled, and spotty. They say I'm "80% blind" but I'm not sure what that means. The parts that aren't there aren't dark, or that'd be a lot easier, it's more like they're.... plasma? A constantly undiscernable miasma of color I can't quite describe...but it's not just black where I can't see.
    Blindness is a spectrum, but for me how well I can see has a ton to do with lighting, environment, shadows, how well I know an area, etc. It's good that I stopped driving before anyone forced me to. Even though ppl gave me a lot of crap for that at the time... people are mean af and nosy.

    Thanks for this video! Hopefully, people can be more informed about these low vision cases and even services offered by low vision optometrists/specialists. There are so many available from telescopes, magnifiers to even non-optical aids.
    I’m an optometry student currently learning about low vision optometry. We learn about cases like this wherein individuals fit a certain description that makes them visually impaired/partially sighted/legally blind even though they have residual vision. This was definitely an educational video for me.

    Do you get talking books from your state library for the blind? I remember when they were on 8 rpm records, then they went to 4-track cassettes, and everything today is digital. When I was preparing to enter the 1st grade (1983), they tried to put me in an LD class (as it was called back then) and my Mother told them, "absolutely not, unless you can prove to me that his brain is not up to normal capacity." It was determined that nothing was wrong with my brain and I was enrolled in regular classes. Most of my teachers were wonderful and some of them later admitted that they were afraid, once they found out that a legally blind student would be in their class (totally understandable, when you don't know what to expect); but, they soon wished that they had a whole room full of students like me (I behaved and I did what was expected of me). When I first started school, they provided me with ordinary magnification devices and those were not cutting it. Then, Mama found out about the Visualtek CCTV magnifiers and arranged to have me tested with one. The test was a major success; so, Mama approached the school district about buying one (this was pre-ADA). The powers that be told her that they'd never spent that much money (about $2500, in 1984 dollars) on one child and Mama told them that I would not likely be the only visually impaired student that they'd ever have and that machine could possibly benefit many (which, later proved to be the case). The school finally told her that they would purchase one, if she and Dad would buy one for home use (which, they happily did and I still use it). The machine sat on a rolling cart and, for the most part, it went wherever I went. By the time I was in high school, the district had purchased several similar types of machines. Mama was always polite in her dealings with the schools and various agencies to get things for me. Later, she met the Mother of another VI student and this woman had a mouth that would make a sailor turn red. She asked Mama how come the school helped me; but, would not do anything for her Son. Mama said that if you talked to them the way you're talking to me, I can understand why they are not helping you.

      radiotvphononut yes I do get talking books. I used to get them on tape, then CD, and now I get them all on the app on my phone. I agree, it’s important to be polite and respectful when asking for what you want. And I think a lot of my teachers would’ve preferred a classroom full of visually impaired kids too because I was well behaved and did my work

    Basically, "legally" blind is legal speak for the visual acuity being bad enough that it precludes the safe commandeering of a motor vehicle. Being "legally" blind is determined as a "disability." By law, this means that a person who is "legally" blind cannot commandeer a motor vehicle because of traffic safety.

    As for myself ...
    Left Eye = 20 /800
    Right Eye = 20 / 300
    My left eye is like your right eye. I can tell if the light is on or off and can tell if its day or night. Nothing else.
    My right eye ...
    I can see, very tunnel vision. Was told glasses won't help so I don't wear any. I can see the letters in an American stop sign at 18ft. away. I don't suggest doing that because that means you are standing in oncoming traffic.
    So how can I type this on a Smartphone? ... I can "Touch Type" at 60wpm on a keyboard. This is no different except I use a magnifying glass to check for spelling before pressing enter.

    I actually kinda have to disagree with you on the whole 20/200. My eye doctor said even though I have 20/100 (20/80 if I squint) I functionally am 20/200. There is not a vast difference functionally between those numbers.
    Now, when it comes to my peripheral vision I have a 15% peripheral vision, but it's really hard to gauge due to my nystagmus.
    Also, it isn't entirely true that people who are not considered legally blind can't get services through blind organizations. I know people who see better than me who can get services. From what I hear they have to at least have a decent amount of vision loss, or to where their life has been affected by their sight loss. Personally I hate how the arbitrary cut off line is 20/200. There is so many that fit into a more gray area that also need help.

    Cayla, you did a great job of explaining something that is, essentially, a meaningless term. Personally, I don't like the term "visually impaired " and prefer "partially sighted," which doesn't mean much either. Only between 2 and 5% of all those considered "legally blind," have no vision at all. The rest of us supposedly have some residual vision we still use to get by. As for me, I can no longer trust what I see for the reasons you mentioned. Ambient light, contrast, glare, graphics, shadows, reflection, and color.

      I found out I was legally blind November 2019, but I suspected it for a while. If you think yuo are legally blind you should find a low vision specialist to evaluate you. They can help you get connected with agencies that help blind and legally blind folks like us. They can also prescribe glasses, sunglasses, magnifiers and handheld telescopes that may help you out.

      I do watch movies. I can follow along by what I’m hearing, or I watch them with audio description. I don’t draw though since I wouldn’t be able to see what I’m drawing

    Quick question, so when you have your eye examined by eye doctor, did they try multiple lense on you? How did they determined that you have 20/200 vision?

    • @CaylawithaC
      @CaylawithaC  5 лет назад

      Yes they tried different lenses. They determined that I have 20/200 vision because I could only read the large E on the eye chart when standing 20 feet away and couldn’t read any of the other lines of letters

    • @veev327
      @veev327 5 лет назад

      Cayla with a C you can read the large E standing 20 get away with or without correct lenses?

    • @FrancescoQuibranza
      @FrancescoQuibranza Год назад

      @@veev327Probably with the lenses. Otherwise, she wouldn’t legally fit the term of legal blindness/low vision.

    • @CaylawithaC
      @CaylawithaC  4 года назад

      Valid question. I am able to see a little bit and my glasses help me see a tiny bit clearer. Essentially I can read about size 80 font without them and 70 font with them. I made this video where I explain it more in depth
