- Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you're here.

Thank you for sharing your process and commitment required to maintain a farm life.
I’m only 30 seconds into the video and had to stop. Can I just say thank you for the fact that just simple things like a camera shot of you walking to the barn means you have to set the camera-walk to the barn-walk back to the camera-walk to a different spot to set your camera-your sweet posing cows greeting you again-then you go into the barn. I appreciate SO VERY MUCH the way you shoot your videos. It soothes my soul and I’m forever grateful for the impact you and your videos have had in my life.
Ok…emotional overload over, back to the video now😂
I kept thinking that the filming was so nice but.... what a pain in the behind that had to be. Thank you Jess for your hard work and attention to detail.❤
Glad you and Bear made it safely. 💛
I was thinking the same thing…and including the cat photo bombs 💕😄
Thank you for your hard work Jess!
The periodic cat nose boops are my faaaavorite 🥹😻
I'm not the only one! The person who commented below you also! I feel so validated 😊
And the cat photo bombs was so cute!! 🤣
Completely agree!
Yaaaa! I'm not alone!
‘My personality has run out’ is the perfectly perfect way to describe an extroverted introvert’s low social tank! I will be using that in the future. My husband and I spent the weekend with friends in an Air B & B with 48 hours of fun filled togetherness, but when I got home I went straight to my grow room with your podcast in my ears! Thanks for all of your content!
I just love and adore both of you. You two are are so stinking funny, you guys crack me up. I love how you two interact
Miah is so sweet. He loves being your hero❤
Even watching Personality-drained Jess I still grin from ear to ear. 😊
Love the early cat photobomb.
Jess, you are looking as healthy as I've ever seen you and I've been watching you for years. In fact, you are the reason I'm gardening today. I have learned so much from you. My garden is booming! Can't wait to see how all my plant babies grow up. I'm so happy and blessed that your health issues have improved. God bless you through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Hi Jess, it was great meeting you at your farmers' market on Thursday, March 21, 2024. THANK YOU!! The smell of coffee with a live music. Different vendors of hand-made products of clothing, pottery woodwork, soaps, freeze dry food, bake goods, small potted bush plants, and food trucks. I am looking forward to watching your farmers' market grow with more homestead/farm product options and checking the plants you bring to the market. Maybe you will have your books to sale too. I will buy both of yours signed by you for my collection. Plus, new vendors with vegetables during the harvest season. Thank you for creating many blessings in our Midlands community. Our paths will cross again.
😂 great video. I literally laughed when kitty was in the camera.
I do want to say how much I thoroughly enjoy you. You could read us a book and I would just sit and listen. You, your family, and your farm just soothe my soul. I can't imagine how much work you put into the video when I know it would be much easier to do just it done!
Hey Jess! Just a heads up that head shape is not always a good indicator of venomous or not for snakes. Even common harmless water snakes will flatten their heads to a triangular shape in a defense display. Cottonmouths will have a fairly clear horizontal strip parallel to their jawlines going back from their eyes, whereas water snakes usually have thin vertical stripes along their lower jaw. And while a non-venomous snake can flatten themselves to look triangular, a trianglular-shaped snake can't become round so I think it's a good bet it wasn't a cottonmouth :) Maybe Nerodia erythrogaster (plain-bellied watersnake). Thank you for not being afraid of snakes! Great sign of a healthy ecosystem if they're setting up shop on your land :)
No one has a problem telling a water snake from a cottonmouth. The water snake wants to get away from you...the cottonmouth wants to eat you alive.
And don't forget the classic googly eyeballs 👀 of all nerodia 👌😂
@@killodendronI call it derp face haha!
Came here to say the same thing! As a herpetologist, I've run into countless water snakes and cottonmouths, and the harmless water snakes are way grumpier, lol.
Thats beyond false and a ridiculous thing to say. We have ran into cottonmouth that they slither away. They dont attack you. @@Artiekarns
I live just north of Columbia in an ancient house next to an ancient cemetery. Copperheads LOVE to sunbathe on those old tombstones and I have an eight foot rat snake who lives under the barn and keeps them away from the yard. Except for one cat who consistently brings baby copperheads home to me……they are as potent in venom as the adults….. I never go out the back door without checking first. And our ever patient vet regularly takes fangs out of said cat’s swollen face telling her kindly, Someday Carlie you’re gonna get smarter about this……hasn’t happened yet!!!
OMGosh, what a guardian/warrior you have! I am saying a prayer for your cat guardian. The more she takes out, the safer your kids are. Bless her! Praying" Lord, please send your warrior angels to fight alongside Carlie, to protect her humans and especially the little ones! Amen.
I love to keep company with the everyday Ness of your voice and activities. Thank you.
YaY, Miah! We all need a Miah in our lives! ❤
Don't think it's "rescued" but great teamwork and love you two have for each other.
Excellent Helpmates!!❤❤❤ Great example for some of us❤.
And the cat photo bombs need their own T-shirts 😂
Im in AR Ozarks & single A huge black snake scaled my house wall and climbed in my dryer vent into the house I moved into a tent in my carport til I was sure it was gone.😂😂True Story just fyi Be sure you have screens in any openings sink dryer vents etc Comfrey poultice works great for snakebites You are just So Dear PS91 Blood of Yashua over yall your pets & property Blessings!❤🎉🎉🎉
I love that whole "Strong Damsel Sometimes Needs Her Knight" thing. Because that is the basis of a good life.
Love the curious barn kitty peeking at the camera.❤
The sound of milking and the sound hens make when they are happy is so soothing. Can you tell I grew up on a dairy farm? Have a good day everyone.
I laughed out loud at the scene where Miah drilled the hole in the solo cup, even showed my husband. I love the sense of humor you and he has. Love your channel. Always videos well worth the watch and time. Hugs Jess ❤
Even the strongest of us need rescuing from time to time!
South Carolina snakes: identification and education is my favorite fb page. I have learned so much from the experts on that page.
I started laughing so loud when Noah asks if there are any cold brewskis laying around. Lmao!!!😂😂😂. Love that humor! Laughing in a relationship makes it so much fun. 🎉
Bless her sweet little goat heart ❤
Thanks Jess for the awesome gardening knowledge 🇨🇦❤️🙏
I am an introvert, also, so no need for further words. I do especially appreciate the stewardship you and Jeremiah show to the people, animals and land around you. I have always tried to teach and live that to my children and grandchildren. God Bless.
Photo bombing cat...priceless. 😻😽
I feel you. My inner being is tapped out today too. Tomorrow is rest. Alarms and ringer off!! ❤ self care!!
It took a coiled snake to bring smile back to your face:)))
Your care for your goat as well as your kids, is so warming. You can see how you stress over their needs. Thank you for being yourself. We all have to reset. Your animals are so well treated. Good job.
It is amazing how a concern - snake and goat- becomes so much bigger when you are drained. I am so glad both are resolving for you. Quiet space and tasks that let me shut off my brain are so grounding. Love the kitty cameos!
Looking forward to growing tomatoes, peppers, sweet peas, beans, strawberries and a few other things thanks to you. Thanks Jessica for encouraging us to try our hand at gardening. You are such a blessing to so many! 🥰
Wow this was a really relaxing video! I love the sounds and the quiet, and your cats checking out the camera and to get to listen to your thoughts here and there tonight. Thank you for doing this!🤗
Agreed. These are my favorite types of videos
Snakes - just one of the reasons I continue to live in Alaska!
Yes, one of the things I liked when I lived there. Fortunately, where I live in MN there are no venomous snakes.
Love your giggle Jess!
What a wonderful video. It had a narrative arc, it was well filmed and well edited. NO silly video drop in jokes, not obnoxious music, and no silly shenanigans. It is nice seeing a youtube homesteader doing some actual farm work, not idly sitting around shopping on the internet or having other people do the work. Loved it.
Todays video made me feel like a sister of yours.
The patterns of our days, daily tasks, feeding a family, always
Preparing for what’s ahead of us-Women of the world, how alike we are.
How happy I feel just thinking of us all.
Quick tip for converting solo cups to tomato cups for those that haven’t tried yet - apply slight pressure with a hot glue gun tip to the bottom of the cup and it makes a perfect drainage hole! ⭐️
I also have a handy hubby like Jeremiah, but sometimes mine is busy and/or using his drills for work M-F. 😁 my widowed mother in law taught me the hot glue gun trick.
Your asparagus is beautiful. I bought a variety at H.D. 7 yrs ago hoping it was a variety suited for Central Florida but i only get pencil thin shoots. I have always heard asparagus doesn't grow well here😢. As always i so enjoy your videos. And while i still miss your old garden, i have loved watching you and Jeremiah turn that property into what it has become so far. I look forward to seeing your new home being built. God bless you and your family. Much love to y'ou all ❤. ....oh and i hope you get inspired to give us another devotional video soon.
🐝Thanks for the great video🌻
Oh Jess, yet again, how I appreciate you so! ❤ The stuck side by side, the snake, the drainage holes, all resonated so strongly with me over here. My husband will graciously arrive with nothing but a solution and a smirk when I find myself buried in a thought trench that I can’t get out of 😂 It’s a pretty great thing, no doubt! I enjoy watching your videos ❤
❤ that's how me and my hubs do it. I'll be doing something that makes sense to me and then he comes up with a more efficient way of doing it. Love and appreciate how their minds work in different ways than ours. Hope to see you on the next market day! Take care and recharge!
Omg I can't even with those cat photo bombs 😂 😍
On the note of the solo cups. Pardon me for saying, but i'm sure 1/4 million women just swooned at your husbands innovation skills. Well done Jeremiah, well done sir.
Photo bombed by cats, aggressive baby goat, mud boggin' in the side by side and attempts to avoid a 3 ft slitherin' 😅 ma'dear you just got a hat trick plus one playin' farm girl in the south Carolinas 😆 You may be having an introvert type Saturday but thank you for bringing us along! It is always a pleasure 😁🤍
Thank you Jess. ❤️✝️🙏
Enjoy your time with Ezra! I think I’d have waited in the lil truck until Miah came with a tank. I do not like snakes!😂
Wonderful visit with you today; thanks for sharing! I would’ve freaked out to see that big snake coiled! Good thinking to call Miah. Blessings to all 🤗🇨🇦
Sweet Miah, you are such a hero. 😮
You mentioned being "personality tapped out." 😊 I get you. I am the same way. I am an introvert that knows how to be extroverted when with others. For example, I used to work in hospitality. However, when I came home, I would be exhausted exerting so much "cheerfulness."
Girl if that was me looking at that snake wondering venomous or not I would been hysterical so you have my respect that you managed to cope so well 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 Love from the UK x
We moved from Michigan to Mississippi. I was a typical Northern girl not even thinking about snakes while playing in my garden in flops. Then, out of no where wham... At that moment I didnt realize was snakebitten. It hurt so bad but I thought this massive red bug bit me because that was the only thing I seen near by. I hopped on a plane just a couple hours later headed to the carribean, unknowingly full of venom. My body started acting weird on the plane and I thought I was having some sort of a panic attack while flying. I still had no clue I was snakebitten. Once I got on the cruise ship and we were sailing the bite started ozzing puss and I could clearly see the fang holes. By then, my ankle was full of fever and the size of a softball. Lucky for me I had been taking oil of oregano for a month or so before I was bitten. Oil of Oregano just happens to act as a natural antivenom. I soaked the bite in the ocean for about 4 hours and it really helped to draw the venom and infection. I have tissue damage, and some nerve damage but Im blessed to still be here. Copperhead venom is the least potent of the pit viper family. If I would have been bitten my a cotton mouth or a rattlesnake, I might not be here to tell the story. We live on a large creek and our land was undeveloped until we moved here a year and a half ago. This place is full of coperheads and I am now forced to wear tall boots in the garden 😢. I felt your fear when you laid eyes on that snake.
😮😮😮
....and now I feel like a complete Ninny over the holes in the cups..me heating up a long nail in some pliers with a candle!!!!! Good grief. 🙄
Also you have the prettiest goats... I may have said that before. 🥰
You are amazing! God bless you greatly!! ❤
I love everything about this one. From the kitties to the loving way you handle your goatie girls to your well articulated explanations of everything to Miahs calm calculated rescue and everything in between. Thanks always for wonderful videos Jess. Wish I lived close enough to visit your market. Have a good week ☀️
Those are the same party cups that I buy for my plants. They're the most economical ones that I can find. They also fit my trays perfectly. 8-)
God bless the heros of this video: Claire for taking on the bottle baby and having a good attitude through the difficulties, Jeramiah for rescuing you and Bear and with the cups, and you for your kindness with Claire and friends for which you have nurtured baby tomatoes! You have made a positive influence in my day and it was definitely needed! 💖Thank you 💖
I used to take my daughter to Costco and tell her that if we spent less than $100 we would get a hot dog and soda. Kept her from asking for too much junk. She was about 10. She is 37 now and I truly miss those days. Enjoy them while you can. ❤
Here in Michigan we have rattle snake, rat snacks, blue eraser. I know we have way more but those areost common in our area, oh yeah your basic garden snake. Which there are two kinds one that will flea in the other one will stand its ground. All my seeds came up waiting to up pit them I have Amish Paste Yellow big big boy yellow and red cherry tomatoes, beef mater. Red and all color sweet bell peppers, did some Hot peppers too. Watermelon, cantaloupe, Honey squash, lots of flowers. More veggies just can't think right now. Lol 🤣. Thank you for sharing, till next time God Bless.
Thank you for the solo cup drill drain idea... I now do this! Make life easier
Jess, thank you for keeping things real! I am sure a lot of us have days where we are just spent! Lol Like you said, personality is running out 😂. The cats with the camera 😍 love them! Good on you for making sure sweet Bear doesn't get bit by the snake. Poisonous or not, snake bites are no fun. I hope next time we are in SC visiting our family we get to catch one of your Farmers Market's! Blessings to you and your family! From SE VA
Hi Jess Those are some nice looking asparagus have a nice day
That curious cat had me giggling! It is so relaxing to watch this morning routine and hear all these sweet animals!
Whew, your thumbnail scared my momma heart. ❤❤ i love the barn kitty kisses.
You could record the sounds of your barn on a day like today and sell a million copies. Loved listening to the animals talking. Particularly that cute little "baaaaa" ❤
Snakes are an issue here in Central PA as well, we have copperheads and in my specific area we have Timber Rattlesnakes. Being startled by a snake in an area where there are dangerous snakes is a protection mechanism. You don't ever want to get too comfortable, especially if you have pets and kids. Love all the cats in this video, they are amazing photo bombers.
Living in rural Australia, I totally get your aversion to snakes.
Look at all of that Mistletoe up in that tree, beautiful.
I believe that wagging tail on Wit is indicative of the fact that he's very happy with his bottle. Too cute!
I enjoy your low personality days. I don't have to scramble to keep up on a high energy day. :) it was peaceful to watch. Ty for not killing the snake.
I have asparagus to harvest here too in Northern California. Big storms and 1 1\2 inch of rain last night. Thunder, lightning wild storm! Not a snake fan here either 😳
Thanks for everything you bring to us❤️
Ok... so that trick with the drill and the party cups??? Freakin' genious!! It never would have occurred to me to do that! I do the same as you and put holes in the cups as I go with a knife. Mind blown and transplanting process forever changed. Thank you!
So much for a quiet Saturday morning. Your kitty believes it is the star of the show - the goats are distracting us ....
Yes you won't be there because you will be here !!! The PNW is ready for Jess! We are soooo excited!!!!
I'm so happy you got goats again, Jess! 🐐 Both for you, because it's so very clear how much it has meant to you. But, selfishly, for myself as well. I'm learning so so much from you! Thanks for sharing the less fun parts, too.
I’ve gone to after work functions before and had to explain to people that I came out but my personality went home for the day.
Love your videos- you never cease to amaze me. Today I watched you pick up those bags of soil and throw them on your shoulder like they were weightless!!! I am so impressed!!
We had a snake BEHIND OUR STOVE in the kitchen lol! Thankfully it was a rat snake and we got him out…
We found a juvenile king snake 2 years ago in our yard…. He was SO beautiful!!!! We gently moved him much further from the house though lol
We homeschool and when we first moved here (SC) from Idaho in 2018, I made it a big project to learn to identify native snakes and which ones we DONT pick up :) it was invaluable
Hahaha that kitty cat is so mischievous.
Hey Jess, Bag Balm is way more than just a moisturizer. It would not irritate the cuts she has. It will heavily and quickly moisturize her teets and pull out any type of infection that may be forming in those cuts. It's great to use on humans as well!
I can relate so heavily with being out of personality. My day job is customer service. I do hair and nails and have for almost 40 years. And when I get home I'm overwhelmed with homestead type activities. You always make me feel so normal. I appreciate that. God bless. Happy Easter!
You know, if this was a Disney movie you would just squirt the milk right into Toast's mouth. I was so happy when I heard she was getting some milk today. Lol. Luv ur farm.
Hey Jess.....@22:54 wheelbarrow. >> You can use that old white Bathtub... that is sitting outside.... to Mix your soil in.
That's what we used at the Greenhouse I worked at.
Build a Wooden Stand to raise it up and you won't have to bend over. Keeps all the soil in the tub and not on the floor.
Up potting and time in my hoop house calming as well.
Thanks, asparagus looked so wonderful
Loving the cat feature at the beginning there! :)
When we first moved to Missouri I was alone and there was a snake that coiled, flattened its nose and hissed like a cobra. Our dog who liked to throw them in the air, was frightened. I threw a rock and it rolled over. I put rocks on it and it and left. When I showed it to my husband it was gone. It was a hognose snake that acts like a cobra and if that doesn’t work it plays possum. Outsmarted by a snake.
I might be a little biased being from VT…but Bag Balm is such great stuff for skin around the farm (animal & human alike!). I love that you show all of these realties in your videos, and am loving that you have goats again! Gosh I miss having goats!💞
My beagle got bit by a copper head.she was overweight and the vet was always telling me she had to lose weight. Not at that vet visit. He said if she was two pounds lighter ( would have been 41 pounds) the bite would have killed her. She was really sick though. My chubby girl showed him.
Oh my, I use party cups to start my seeds, calling hubby right now!!!😁😁😁
I haven't watched your videos since either the coffee shop opened and or you bought the store and started working on it. I have just been very busy and haven't had much time to watch your videos, but I missed the calmness vibes from your videos. It's also so cool to see all the more progress y'all have gotten done on the farm. I remember when y'all were talking about the milk room and now it's so cool to see it finished!
Thank you for taking us along even on your "personality - drained" days. It is your vids that help this introvert fill up her personality. 😅
Also, other have said, but thank you for rhe amazing camera shots. Some days i wonder and think - that is a while lot of extra walking she did!
Ps your kitty camera bombs are the cutest! ❤
I was in suspense. I thought did the goat get bit 😅 I love the mindless garden tasks. I started the most seeds I ever have this year. I also put more planning in the garden. I'm so excited we're almost past the frost!
I love you and Miah's humorous conversations ♥️ ❤️ 😊
Seeing the amount of soil you use makes me smile and feel better about how much I use for seed starting. This year, I am using my saved big yogurt containers. I'm putting papers in the bottom of certain ones, like my cabbage (I'm in South Dakota and am currently going through a cold snap. They are all tucked in under my grow lights). I wanted the soil to the top of the container to allow the plants to get as much light as possible. This is the largest garden I've personally ever grown, and this is the thinnest our budget has been for gardening (ER bills). I am so grateful to have the seed bank I do have. If I didn't, I wouldn't have been able to afford to plant more than one variety of each plant and have soil to seed start.
This should be our last cold snap for the year (it's a high of 25 today). And I can't wait to get my hands in the dirt outside
Love your channel ❤ I've been binge watching this last week. I've never been so early on a video 🎉
I up potted my tomatoes today too!!
I’ve until this year I haven’t had more then small container garden, growing in pots mostly. My previous home was surrounded in beautiful trees, but zero sun. In 2021, I was planning to have a community plant sale and started 100s of tomatoes and peppers in my little house shelf grow shelter I made with Amazon lights and painters tarp. It was early February… then came the snowpocalypse, and here in central Texas we had rolling blackouts. My house was 19° inside! They all died and I got so discouraged. Well, since then I’ve purchased an acre of off grid property and me and my 15 year old son have been making it happen!! I remember your encouraging words about killing plants and just went for it this year!!! Yay tomatoes!!! 🍅
I use party cups too for plants I am going to sell. I just bought 500 of them. I use a soldering iron for making holes, but the drill looks like a great idea!
So happy just seeing you and the farm. Remember to rest when you can. I hope that snake is not a momma watching a nest which is why she is in protection mode, Your awesome. Love you. Thinking about making a road trip to one of your market days. Be well
