I wish I had a non toxic pesticide strawberry!! Have a Beautiful SUMMER 2024. You the Best Jess. Im having triple bypass surgeryin two weeks. Prayers please..♥️
Jess, here in central Illinois we are going to get a double cicada emergence that has not been seen for over 221 years. Embrace those sounds, those beauties arreiate the soil and fertilize the ground. It's a great feat of mother nature.
Wow, thank you so much for talking about small plants. I started some saved tomato seeds and they are very small. I was beginning to worry, but you have given me hope that all is well.
OHHH this strawberries are gorgeous!! You are so ahead of us in weather and your videos make me so excited about our warming weather! (it snowed tonight) :) ❄🍓🇨🇦
If temperature changes is the issue, then water batteries are an easy way to mitigate that. Get large water tubs of any kind - barrels, milk jugs, totes...whatever. Paint them black to absorb heat better, and place them in the greenhouse - under the plant shelves would be great. They'll absorb heat during the day (lessening the heat the plants need to absorb) and give it off at night (lessening the heat loss of the greenhouse). It's a cheap solution, but it absolutely works.
Do the water containers need to be in direct sunlight to absorb heat? I know clear jugs would probably grow a lot of algae but could I use solid white jugs without painting them?
@@debbiep7419 They don't HAVE to be in direct sun. They just warm up faster that way. But they'll help equalize the temperature either way. And yes, any sort of jug would work, even unpainted. Paint just reduces algae and black paint helps with heat absorption. But it's helpful, not required.
@@ArtistCreek I have a small high tunnel I've had tropicals in for 2 years in zone 7b. The first year, I didn't have water batteries in it and I lost several of my plants over winter, even with 2 small heaters. This past year, I added 10 used black pickle barrels full of water, placed against the prevailing-wind side of the tunnel and only lost a single plant that was apparently in a draft. Even when temps went down to 19F, the tunnel stayed above freezing.
I loved when you talked about how the goats struggle with change and being on alert, and then talked about how the cicadas were unnerving because you weren’t used to it 🥰🥰 the sweet nervous systems of all living things
Cicadas make the sound of a hovering alien space ship, or what I imagine such a thing would sound like. Your goats seem a wee bit codependent! 😂 Thanks for sharing.
Oh Jess, all the goat things!😂 I can so relate right now to all of that! Change one little thing and everyone is a mess 😂 we totally get rushed at the gate, I really need to work on that order thing because they all totally know their names and could come when called. Those three goats though following you just made my day! "Momma! Where are you going?!" 😂 So funny!
Those cicadas are loud. Erie. There were supppsed to be alot of the coming out of the ground afyer 17 yrs or something to that effect. My mind struggles to remember info at times. Listen to those babies. So precious ❤
Thats it. Create a smaller, more controlled environment within your larger greenhouse. Control humidity, soil temp and moisture, and ambient temp, all within a smaller tent. Just hang some thick vinyl/ plastic. Roll it down for the early stage, then roll it up out of the way for the rest of the season. Cheaper and easier to manage the climate in the smaller space. You got this. ❤ Edited to add..be sure to put a top on the mini tent. Doesnt have to be tight. Just something to keep in a bit of heat and humidity. Throw some clear platic over the top. OR...have your honey build a mini greenhouse structure inside the larger one, with roll-up sides. You can use it for all kinds of experimental things. 🤗
17:35 Great idea on how you are incorporating the hay indoors with a little bit of the outdoors and that you've taught your goals a system. That's good for me to know, for the future. PS, I got your Beulah coffee sampler, it is delicious. Just the aroma alone wants to make you drink a whole pot of coffee by yourself. ☕♥️ I'm a morning person, and I have to start my day with coffee. The breakfast blend is amazing. I'm a Texan, so I started my day with my cup of coffee, actually, two cups, some brisket and scrambled eggs. (From my won chicken of course)🐔🥚❤. I can't wait to try the rest of the sampler pack. I just have to remember to save some for my husband. Lol. 😉🐐☕❤
Cow paths are formed because they always walk the same path to and from. Such creatures of habit. Our cows would always come in the stantions (5 on the right and 5 on the left) in the same order nightly and on the same side.
I completely agree understand about seedlings and the heat. I often get comments that my seedlings are lanky and or stunted. However I have no heat mats or grow lights I do the best I can.
I learned that too now I have a small greenhouse inside my larger greenhouse. And use a bucket with a fish tank heater to keep the temp up. No more issues
Jess another idea would be you could use the little greenhouse you had on the inside of the large greenhouse and you could even use a little heater inside the small one to keep temps at a consistent temp. I have one of the 4 tiered greenhouses inside my sewing room I use every spring for my seeding. I have heated mats etc. and it works really really well that way. You might not even have to have a heater inside the small one but I think I would since it's outdoors. Wouldn't take a very big heater just to heat that small of an area either. I hope it works out well for you next spring whatever you decide on.
I’m SOOO NOT looking forward to the cicada emergence here in the Midwest! Can’t figure out if that reverberation is creepy or calming!! 😂😂 and oh, the goat drama! 😆🐐just love their “personalities”!💕
I pray that your house build goes smoothly without severe delays. It's taken us a year to get 45% done with our house build. We have an excellent builder and funding but things happen out of our control. Buckle up and try to enjoy the ride as much as possible but prepare for the bumps and inevitable tears. We've been living off grid in a wall tent (with the NC weather) for a year and half and it's been the hardest thing we've ever done. We don't have running water or electricity yet but I can still water my plants with the tears that come with every delay we have faced!
Your goats amuze me. I've never had a goat that was that panicked by change, and I've had goats from all level of abused first homes to pampered living. Every time we get a new goat, it's like being on my farm breathes new life into them and they become the goat they were always ment to be.
Oh my goodness, those goats ARE dramatic. The goats running after you is hilarious. It’s amazing how loud the cicadas can get. Pretty crazy. Thank you Jess for sharing.❤️
You have always been an inspiration to me. I started watching during covid and the first thing I grew was lettuce in a soil bag. I was an urban garden growing mostly in containers and a few raised beds. I have come a long way since then and you have helped me with your videos so very much. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the world.💛
the goats running after you very much gave the feelings of a toddler when you walk away lol "MOOOMMM!! DON'T GO!!" - Which I think is also a great testament to how well you've been treating them :) They trust you to help them
14:21 the exact same looks I get from my dogs when I leave for work. 🥺🥺🥺 Hang out with 'em a bit and borrow a goat that knows how to goat to show them the ways of free range goating. 🙃
You were talking about cows being a prey animal and how the have a strong flight or fight instinct and it reminded me of Flo and “When cows fly” lol 😆 😂
I read an article about cicadas being really loud this year 🤗 there are two types emerging simultaneously this year, so there are more and much louder! They only emerge every several years, lay eggs and die. Personally, I love the sound. I grew up in the Midwest and that was the sound of summer for me. There are no cicadas in upstate NY and I have missed that sound for the last 50 years 🥲
The goats are hilarious with their drama!! 😂 I am having the same problems but my seedlings are outdoors. With that same fluctuations in temps. So I agree!!
Oh my goodness, the goat drama queens! I think you may have nailed it with the temperature swing hypothesis. Maybe you and Miah could devise some kind of partition to close off part of the greenhouse to make that part easier to maintain more even temps with less supplemental heat. I'm thinking of those heavy clear plastic strip curtains that you see in some stores and warehouses to keep cool areas cool. Maybe overlapping tarps hanging from the rafters, something along those lines.
13m54sec 😂😂😂 I cracked up! This is when they really understood “she’s doing it again, noooooooo!” They all picked up the pace and start running after you yelling.❤
Do you happen to still have that plastic greenhouse? If so, you could set it up inside the greenhouse. No concern it will blow away since it will be inside. 😉
I moved our sheep minerals from one side of their shelter to the other and you would have thought I moved them to another country! They ignored me for days🤣
I get it Jess, I have to say even my dogs love routine! We don’t watch much TV but our son will join us every night for Jeopardy! When they hear the TV go on the female dog will run to the staircase with a toy in her mouth for him to throw for her in the first few minutes! At the end of the evening when the TV goes off they jump down from the sofa, run to the door to go out then sit and wait for me to open the kennel door to go to bed! I guess we all can be creatures of habit! I start my seedlings in the house and only move my tomatoes and peppers to the sun porch when temperatures are consistently above 50 at night, otherwise just like the dogs they come in to the house at night! Even plants like consistency! We are all learning 🙃! So interesting our cicadas won’t start singing until the warm weather in end of July and I have to watch the dogs because they will eat the dead ones and then get sick! Gross to find legs sticking to their tongues! 😝 Peace and blessings! 🤗
When more and more people started getting into gardening a few years back, I noticed many potting mixes having much more wood in them. The extra wood in the potting mix was draining the nitrogen out of my seedling stunting them and even killing some. I started sifting the potting mix for when I was up potting my seedling and the plants started doing much better. Just something else to look into.
We had Cicadas here in Southwest Ohio a few years ago. They are so loud it is crazy! I do not like anything flying at me, so I had a few encounters that were uncomfortable. One landed on my shirt and I didn't know until I was back inside. It started screaming and when I realized it had caught a ride on my shoulder, I think I had an out of body experience. 😂😂
A friend of mine mixes epsom salts into her starter mix before she plants seeds in it, they do great. And in defense of the goats you did call them out of the stall and ran away from them and they just want to keep following you 😜 🐐🐐🐐
I grew up on a farm, had Nubian goats and have bottle fed several babies. I trained them, when they were old enough, to drink their milk from a bucket. Allow them to suck on your fingers and slowly lower your hand into the bucket of milk. They will drink the milk. I love all of the livestock and chickens you have. I miss my goats and horses. Thank you for sharing. Blessings.
GOD BLESS YOU TAYLOR. I remember my first (surprise) babyshower and mom's gifts. It still is a fond memory (1976). Daughter. GLORY BE TO GOD HALLELUJAH THANK YOU JESUS 🙏 ❤❤❤❤❤❤.
Have you thought about using hot water pipes on the under side of the shelf? I’ve seen a few bigger green houses that circulate hot water through for the extra heat.
Yes Jess a green house within a green house! I do think that the heat mats make the most difference though. My seedlings are stunned as well. My green house is not built well has lots of gaps and a super high ceiling. I did have my shelf wrapped in extra green house material. The one thing I would say is that it didn't seem to be getting enough light through two barriers. Mind you the person who put in my greenhouse put it in the shade of a large tree and the house 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️. Don't worry it's not just you struggling with seedlings!
It's been 7 years since I started grazing my goats and they definitely were not thrilled with my plan at first. I brought them cut forage to show them what there was to eat and that it was food. I still feed my goats weeds and branches. Taking forage and putting it on their hay shows them it's good if they literally have never eaten a fresh green thing, and they are where it's safe so they aren't distracted by the scary new world. I graze in electric fence and I started out with paddocks really close to their home pen. The first few years we would stay out with them a lot so they would be more comfortable, if they are spooky about something new we still do that sometimes. Over the years I have gradually got them use to grazing further and further away. Just last year the herd finally was willing to cross our open field of pasture to go down to the lower trees, it's about 300' wide, that's literally been years in the making and only happened because I have enough does who I've raised grazing and are a lot braver than the herd matriarch.
That constant drum of those cicadas reminds me of some sort of alien movie or something. LOL. They haven't started here but they will be. Predicting for us around mid to late may. Not looking forward to it. :) Your goats are so sweet. We had goats for years and yes, they work so much better when routine is happening. Cows too. Amazing to me how curious that goats and any bovine is. Hubs and I were out in our pasture measuring for new fencing today and our steers were all about 5 steps behind us like "whatcha doing?" Was so funny. We had to laugh.
Same same same ... Exact same experience with my seedlings. Also in a new greenhouse in southeast Tennessee. It did not hold heat on the cold nights and gets screaming hot when the sun comes out. Shade cloth has made a big difference but I will definitely have to do something different next year to get them off to a better start.
I follow the Veggie boys. They have a water system that runs under the metal on the tables, that is heated. Then if it gets too cold they will put a plastic sheet on top. I think k they use it when the seedlings are small though🤔 If you do the plastic sheeting around the shelves , you could also add incandescent Christmas lights on the shelves.
Pam here…. What glass is in greenhouse? De the windows have UV coating? Blocking the rays that benefit the ‘greening’ process?? Old vintage windows probably fine..but if were made after certain date. Could be be some UV blocking in the glass??
Might be a silly suggestion, but could you put up some sort of divider down the middle of the greenhouse to make it into 2 mini greenhouses to make a more isolated area?
Maybe if you came across people getting rid of sliding patio doors, or French windows you could section off one of the sides/ends of the greenhouse. If you found enough you could even do three sides. When it gets warm the doors could be open, but in cooler weather it would create smaller spaces to manage temperature. It may even work out to having different temperature controlled zones. Hopefully the plants will take off with careless abandon once they're planted out. Goats that don't want to venture out and explore the world outside, many would say you lucked out with that! God bless.
I did a layer of plastic over the grow shelves in my greenhouse and it does make a definite difference. We still have a month of frosts and I will be transitioning my seedlings out into my greenhouse soon. I will use plastic or have them in clear totes for that extra layer of insulation. I think that’s a good idea for you to try out for sure!
ALWAYS LOVE THE BOTTLE BABY HAPPY TAILS!!!! 🥰
You’re hardening off the goats!
😂😂 literally laughed out loud at this

Haha! I just wonder how those docile, quiet cows feel about the goat chaos! 😂😂 🐐
This video is hysterical! Your goats are like spoiled kindergartners!! I laughed my butt off! Good girl training them to be goats!!👍👍
You walked away from your goats and it reminded of dropping a child off at preschool or children’s church…. Mommy! Don’t leave meeeee! So cute! 🥰

Exactly!! It’s so cute and funny 😂

I laughed so hard watching them follow you with your commentary. I had to watch it a second time. LOL

Love the hosts to me it sounded like they were saying mom, mom, wait for us...lol

The white one was screaming Mommaaa❤
Yes!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Me too
Me too!!!
I heard it right along with you.... they know who Momma is ♥
Same! My daughter and I were laughing so hard at the MOOOOMMMMMMM!
And the goats say "Ma, Ma, Ma, Ma. Why are you leaving us with these cows?" Too cute. 🐐❤
This is by far the funniest video you have posted 😂 so cute

Mind you the person who put in my greenhouse put it in the shade of a large tree and the house 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️. Don't worry it's not just you struggling with seedlings!
They are bawling for you!
Yes! To the heat mats!
I smell the sun on those chamomile plants from here 😍
Last year the weather was so up and down, it would be hot then really cold and shady and that’s how my seedlings looked.
That constant drum of those cicadas reminds me of some sort of alien movie or something. LOL. They haven't started here but they will be. Predicting for us around mid to late may. Not looking forward to it. :)
Your goats are so sweet.
Those poor goats! That is so sad
I had trouble with my plants too. I lost some, but I planted so many.
Look at it this way. The smaller plants will take longer to bear fruit so you will a staggered harvest atleast😅
I agree with you Jess. I start my tomatoes in the house and move them to the greenhouse and they do well.
That's funny, the goats running after you screaming, come back! :)
