Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you're here.

I am so glad Ezra loves our Bread. He is literally the sweetest boy and he has blessed me with compliments. Hearing your bread is unforgettable from someone so young is just the ultimate and I tell everyone about him now. Thank you for having us at the Farmers Market I look forward to growing along with the market!
That's So Precious ❤ , n our kids are Ruthlessly Honest 😅 so I can only imagine 😉💭 the way you felt 👼 inside ❤😅 That's 💯 😋 Delicious 😘 ❗
It really did hit in the heart. I was over the moon happy about that. He is my new best friend.@@ItsNanaImHere
I find it so endearing that you are just your real self with us but need to put yourself together to go out in public. I am so glad we aren't considered "public" 🙂
my kids are always asking me what I'm watching on you tube and i always tell them "my best friend, Jess" or if i say that i learned something new they will ask me if "my best friend Jess" taught me that. She truly is my best friend that I've never even met or talked to, lol.
@@MichelleBieber haha -- parasocial relationships
This👆 right here! On one hand was like, um,... What can be more public than RUclips ?! ... And on the other hand I felt like an honored friend that we can just be ourselves with ❤️❤️
Team Dark Roast coffee here. True story that my Native American Grandmother who was born in 1923 could whistle the call of every bird that lived in MS. She was a midwife and herbal healer and healing energy, etc. She lived with us and I'd give anything to go back and be able to record her knowledge and pay more attention to her stories. Thankful for the knowledge I did absorb.
❤
Yes , Me too on goin n Recorded more n document ❤ what an awesome memory you do have n Amazing Grandma you had 😍 I miss mine n my husband's great grandma was full blooded Cherokee n adopted by a Dr in town over as a baby after a Battle over land n scalped 😢

Our Grandmothers never live long enough.
@@ItsNanaImHere "n my husband's great grandma was full blooded Cherokee n adopted by a Dr in town over as a baby after a Battle over land n scalped" ??
@@marypritchett115 I'm nearly 60 and all of my grandparents had died by about the time I was finished college (age 23). One of my high school best friends just lost her grandmother (age 99). How lucky she was to have a grandmother until she was almost 60!
I grew up before modern technology, and we relied on nature to predict the weather. For example, if the maple leaves on the trees are turned backwards, it will rain within 24 hours. If it’s raining, and your chickens are staying outdoors, it will rain all day. My grandpa taught me tons of weather signs, and they are still more reliable than the weather service forecasts.
I bet, yes I hear a Rain Crow or leaves turned n Dooley worm, n Persimmons, n it all falls true ❤ to know more since I was Raised in town , with a Country ❤ Bot Daddy tho 😆😅n 🚫 had a grandpa I got pleasure of knowing 😢 ❗... The Sunday paper had a Segment by a farmer n his stories I ❤ tho, growing up too 😍❗ I'm goin to 👀 him up now, thanks for jogging my brain, 😅❗
Sweet Jess, Every morning 445 AM your Guatamalen coffee is brewing while I feed the animals. When I'm done feeding, and washing up. I pour that lovely Guatamalen coffee in my favorite cow cup, and top it off with my homemade vanilla creamer. Then it's time to listen to the wildlife wake, and stir in rhe woods while sitting out on the front porch.
Life is good!
Hi, I heard this yesterday, Children don't need perfect parents, they need happy ones. I loved it and wanted to share it.❤
When you quoted your friend Michael it made me think of how grateful I am to get the chance to be pregnant again for the ninth time at the age of 40. After trying for a year and feeling like it was hopeless it came as a surprise to all of us. And although I have seven children I am so excited to meet my eighth child. The struggle makes the victory or prize that much more meaningful.
Goat babies are the best ❤ I have Nigerians, and 4 babies so far, with the rest due in a couple months. I've decided I'm not breeding them until they're over a year old, starting this year. I've got 2 bottle babies and one I have to put the mama on the milk stand to feed because they're young first time mamas. It's impossible to be in a bad mood with baby goats to snuggle. So fun to watch and cuddle.
My thornless blackberries are now on their second year and the clusters of buds are forming at every old leaf node! Hundreds of them! OMG, I can taste that blackberry cobbler already. 💚
I’m 60 and now watch my infant grandson 3 days a week. I reflect back to a crazy time of my life when my boys were little and my grandma came over to visit and I felt like I needed to get my younger son down for bed so I could visit with her. She gave me some of the best wisdom I have received in my life. She said, “Honey, go tuck him in and kiss him. It won’t be long before he won’t want you to do that.” Age and wisdom. Appreciate the moment.
Yes , Those Words ring so True, fast my grandson is 7 👎 want kisses like when younger but yesterday in back seat with him n his arm around my shoulders n patting my arm as he 👀 out window 🌞 after we had dinner together 😉💭 Priceless❤👑😅❗... Papa had Dr few towns over , n These moments make Memories😍💯❗

My traditions follow the moon cycle when we plant we still have ceremonies for each season .. ex harvest .. green corn /bean /strawberry /maple syrup we honor each season and harvest with a full day of giving thanks 😊(ceremony)
I dehydrate extra micro greens then powder them in a spice grinder. The green powder can be added to soups, smoothies, etc. for added nutrition.
😮❤🎉
Flash preserve. Long term storage. Smart
Routine is comforting, even on the hectic mornings. I love how you share the homesteading journey with us while doing your daily chores. Plus, the new coffee sampler box sounds amazing! Thanks for sharing your day with us!
Noticing those small characteristics of all my animals, like how your toasty is your milking buddy, is one of my favorite things about raising animals. Every animal of the farm has their own personality and it makes it fun.
My oldest daughter is a teacher just like her father, which proved my belief at birth that she’s a daddy’s girl. 😂 My middle daughter is searching for a home to buy now with her new husband and I giggle cause they all look like homes with a country old fashioned feel, plus garden spaces. It’s a beautiful thing watching your babies grow up and take on attributes you’ve taught over the years with your actions. Enjoy the adventures! 😊
Love your Roots and Refuge mug! And barn kitty Toast! Seeing and hearing your goatie girls! Starting my morning with you!
I hope to make it back down to see you guys again eventually. Probably after you mercantile and coffee shop are up and running, when it's farmers market season. So much to look forward to! Love from Columbus, Ohio 💜
I'm starting my morning with Jess & the farm too! I dream of visiting someday also. I am anticipating waking my kids for school & have a renewed calmness to remember these mornings. Bless all that are here! Grant City, MO
For my parent's 25th wedding anniversary, one of my cousins gave them a live Tom Turkey.
That bird dressed out at over 50 lb! We cut him in half and had 1/2 for Thanksgiving and 1/2 for Christmas. Both times, he fed 26 people!
When we visited my Nana's ranch and ride the mini bike if you honked the horn the big old turkey would chase us down! great childhood memories.
The coffee mug 😍
Just thinking about your kids decades from now with the memory of the blackberries close to their castle being magically so much easier to pick then normal blackberries. Having no idea mom made that happen until they randomly watch this episode and hear you planning their memories.
Freeze drying micro greens is a fantastic way to preserve them. So is dehydrating them. You can add them to smoothies and recipes to give a good nutritional boost.
I cant wait to see some sourdough content on Farmers Table!! I just got my first starter from my sister in law this past weekend so this is a new journey for me even though I've been homesteading for almost 15 yrs.
I also wanted to say that I love it when you show us whats sprouting and waking up on the farm in springtime. I live in Ohio and so when I see what's waking up on your farm I'm reminded of all the things that will be coming to life for us here in just a couple short weeks. I'm SO excited to start a new season!!
I love Whit's little tail going back and forth when he's eating his bottle.
I can vouch for the decaf coffee. It’s so good. I think it’s the best decaf that I’ve had. They are super nice to work with and let me customize my subscription amount. ❤
I recently read Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder. They had a July 4th frost. Almonzo's dad seriously seemed to sense a frost was coming. He read the sky and knew. They got up early and doused the fields with water. Read it and be inspired by farmers of old.
How funny...I was literally JUST reading about watering before a frost in an effort to save your plants!
Wonderful video, Jess. It looks right you milking goats again. Our granddaughter has a miniature nubian farm. We are so proud of her. Thanks for bringing us along in your day.
I just learned about making sprouts in a jar. I’m going to rely on these in the winter months for fresh greens I won’t have to buy at the store.
Jess, I use a large sheet pan to form my sourdough loaves. Then the mess is contained to something I can take to the sink and quickly wash 😉❤️ Enjoying my coffee with you is always a good morning!
I also hate a mess on my counter, so with bread I either make it on one of those flexible plastic cutting boards or I use the press-n-seal saran wrap and put it on the counters. This way when I'm done I can peel it back with all the flour etc. I know its wasteful but its worth it for my adhd brain.
I love your coffee mug! super cute! I love how you say hi to the animals and they talk back to you🤣 I talk to my chickens like they are sisters lol
I’ve recently discovered you ❤ and today I separated my tomato seedlings 🌱 I planted them the way I learned how to from one of your previous vids. I have 32 tomato plants now 😅
I grew up on a 108 acre dairy farm, the cats always waited by their bowl to be filled from the strip cup
My mom and daddy were homesteaders back in the 70’s and 80’s … way before it was cool. Those were the good old days growing up on a small farm. We always had chickens and turkeys and pigs and a huge garden and rabbits to sell for meat. We had 2 HUGE turkey Toms that lived in our front yard and literally everybody was petrified of them. The UPS driver wouldn’t even come near the gate. LOL. It was hilarious because those Toms were the sweetest pets. 😂
I ordered ❣️❣️❣️
You remind me to come back to my roots. I pray I get to fulfill my dream of having a lovely genuine community over at my channel the way we do here🌿 thank you for the inspiration to edit the video and let go of the itch to make it perfectly aesthetic (as much as I know how) these are my favorite videos just real and raw. God bless🫶🏼

@fatimasroots I subscribed to you....I'm Misty
❤❤❤ Thanks for being you and for all you do Jess. I love hanging out with you. Thanks for having me, and God bless YOU until next time.😊
The coffee is amazing! The Guatemalan dark roast has been our favorite and we drink it every morning.
Jess, I grew up milking goats with my mom. It was where we spent the most time together and it was often just the two of us doing the chores. Those are some of my favorite memories with her. We showed goats also and it wasn’t unusual for the two of us to load up the trailer and head to a show a couple counties away. Those are the memories I hold close in my heart. In the moment it may seem like farm chores but years later they are so much more.
"Flirting with the soup pot" ...that rooster better watch out! 🐓 🥘
😂 I like that, "flirting with the soup pot"
I hit up Lowe’s every so many days for the clearance plants. If they get the slightest frost or dried out damage… boom.. half off. These days the staff where I’m at never water the plants so I get my plant fix by getting a ton of plants half off just to bring home to water and give a little trim and they are good as new. It’s like a natural high dumpster divers get lol.
I do the same thing!
Little Whit’s tail wagging while getting the bottle 😍 oh my goodness he’s a cute little thing. I need to place another coffee order, but I think I’ve convinced myself to take the drive to the market next week and buy it there! Can’t wait!!!
I just told my husband tonight that I can't wait to be able to go outside and forage in the garden and yard for a salad. Things are just starting to turn green and I have lettuce that just came up.
Congratulations on your 1 month anniversary with the goats!!🎉
Having unusual moments/days within the tapestry of our routines is what keeps it all from looking or feeling the same. And these are the ones we maybe cherish the most because, regardless of how we felt at the time, these memories are stamped as "unusual" in our minds. Yes, routine can be very good for our mental health, but also routine is what keeps us going when we don't really want to get out of bed - and usually we feel better for it. I love the idea of a snacking garden - especially one you won't have to replant every year! LOL Thank you for sharing this video today.
The mason jar method of growing micro greens is nice. You can do just one jar at a time or multiple.
This coffee is amazing! We were shocked as my husband and I have drank the same coffee for many years. This was so much better it was a pop of good morning! I am excited to try more!
I’m so glad you think so!
I'm in zone 8A and have been checking the 10-day forecast daily, too! Thursday-Saturday lows in the 30s 😬 I'm so ready to plant my starts!
We love starting every morning with Beulah Coffee!!
Wonderful & informative visit today! Thanks for sharing! Blessings to all 🤗🇨🇦
“It’s a lot and it’s relentless.” 1:20 Truer words were never spoken.🤣 But it’s worth it in the end.
Lol, I also go to the garden center when I'm under the weather. Our local nursery also has beautiful things made by local artists, so I spend a good amount of time just walking around. But I'm saving all my coins for the growing season. I picked up some violas, and it makes me so happy looking at some color on my patio while everything else is slowly waking up. I just love spring 🌸
I can't tell you how much I didn't know I needed the profound perspective on parenting you gave at the beginning. Mom of 5, ages 9 down to 1. I've found myself more flustered in this season and struggling to obey the "holy pause" before unleashing mean mom on my kids. Thank you for that. Bless you. ❤
Toast is so precious. What a blessed life you have.
Aww, it pulls at my heart to hear the little buckling crying to be fed💙💙💙
Sample bags are the best way to discover which coffees you like best.
I planted my tomatoes too early and it got cold so I was worried I'd killed them. I was so happy to discover a couple days ago, my lucid gem sprouted. ❤️
I love using hemp mats for my microgreens!!!!! So easy!!
We save our lettuce and spinach containers and use them to grow microgreens. With a 2" layer of soil it's the perfect height to get the greens growing (roll up/lift up lid when seeds germinate). I find it a perfect size for keeping a few meals of greens and I usually pot up a few extra plants for the spring garden (tatsoi grows well in our northern region until mid summer 🌱)
I agree thornless blackberry bushes are worth it, not matter what is growing to forage. Not having to deal with thorns and splinters is my vote. Hope your warm weather makes it up here. We have been hovering around 0 again after a warm stretch. Spring can be such a tease up here.
My Tom Turkey is the sheriff of the farm! If my roosters fight or get to hard on a hen, he breaks it up. Love how the berry area is coming together.
I did some dehydrated sourdough mother and ground up to powder store in sealed jar to have for future use also.
Thank you for all you share my wife and I watch you all the time even the older videos you made, it's are second year being in are house we bought, we are doing raised garden beds and in ground gardening . Just want to thank you for sharing, we love you, don't change a thing, God bless you and your family.
I’ve been loving my Beulah! I’m expecting 2 more bags any day now!
When you come to Coeur d’ Alene for the homestead conference try Thomas hammer. It’s a local coffee chain that roasts their own coffee and has good coffee.
Doma Coffee in Post Falls, ID too!
@@jenc368 yes they are really good too.
I just ordered! Thank you so much! I’ve been wanting some but wasn’t sure what to choose. The variety pack helps! I pray many blessings over you and your family.
Enjoying my dark roast coffee while watching you, I can totally relate to your sourdough situation 😂 I did great over the pandemic when
I had more quiet time, now life is busy and time gets away from me. I’ve learned to embrace “less than perfect” bread 💕 Cheers
You're getting some of that Florida weather , Pennsylvania is cold here, I love hearing those goats talking , so sweet.
About microgreens: have you grown pea shoots?? They can replace half or all the lettuce in a salad, they can certainly replace lettuce on a sandwich! They're easy, they're large, and super tasty! Just for something that's more substantial rather than like a fancy lil garnish.
I dislike messing up counters as well, bought a silicone mat for the counter. It is amazing. Just pick up and easy clean.
Here for the one liners!!
" Flirting with the soup pot." 🤣🤣 ' bout lost my coffe on that one!
He should be name " and dumplings"
I grow micro greens for the restaurant I work at. I also use the terra fibre mats (from a Canadian company). If you need any tips on growing, I could help. Speckling pea is definitely the easiest and most cost effective. Using the mats, does limit micro greens options. At least for me, as in house grower.
I love these videos Jess. Thanks for sharing.
Love the sample pack idea and dark roast. Ordering soon!
As I watched your video and you were talking about ADHD and routine a light went off in my head, lol. I was diagnosed ADD as an adult. I had never made the connection with my need for my routines not to be interrupted and the ADD. Like you said it takes me some time, about 2 weeks, to set a routine, but when I get there I'm like clock work. I tend to get snippy 😉 when life gets in the way and changes things. 😂
Just ordered the sample pack! It will be drank in my home office in my EMBER bluetooth mug at a comfy 139 degree temp my husband bought me for Christmas 2023.
Good video Ma'am! And so true about the weather forecasting of old vs current weather technology - such as the old wives tale for up here that says "whatever the weather is on Good Friday, it shall be for the next 40 days"....so it shall be unsettled based on Fridays weather. The hoar frost predictions is another good one and if march comes in like a lion, it shall go out like a lamb - both of these work for up here. I do wonder if they work elsewhere.
Love my thornless blackberry . It grows on the porch railing so you can snack off the deck but I have got 10kg in a year off one plant (22 lbs) I have many 2 litee icecream tubs in the freezer waiting to be made into jam this winter ( it's autumn here in new zealand)
It travelled half the length of the country with us as a cutting in the car door 15 years ago. I give away cuttings when ever I can.😊
Hi Jess, I’m catching up after being away with family. I don’t remember who it was, but another experienced gardener shared that it is not recommended to plant raspberries close to other berries. Especially thornless as there could be cross pollination that causes thorns on other berries. Happy gardening 🪴🫐🍓🍇
I absolutely love bearded irises! They are such a great part of my childhood. I finally live in a place that I can grow them and have ordered 200 seeds. Wish me luck. ♥️
I love micro greens on everything.
Great Uncle Bill said if his dairy cows laid down it might rain❤
Hi Jess! Love all your content I've been following for years. I just used the bootstrap trays and hemp mats. They work great! I agree with you that they produce a lot.
awe man!!!! I ordered the sample pack the moment I saw the post on FB. This is what I get for not waiting.
oooh and now a dark roast? Those are my favorite! You're killin' me Jess!!!
So excited to watch this now as you just posted!
Just placed an order for the Eclipse coffee because I'm one of those dark roast gals. Also a t-shirt for good measure! Appreciate you and all you share with us.
Awwww Jess, it’s not hoarding if it’s plants ❤ it’s a garden 😊
Hey…great video! Question - where do you get the collars you are using on the goats? I need some similar to those but don’t know where to find them! Thanks! Appreciate you and your channel. It always makes me happy to watch and hear your words of wisdom!😊
Just ordered the sample pack! Thank you for offering it so I have a chance to decide what I like!
My Maddy fell over and said “But I already had my birthday!” She’s STARSTRUCK right now. 😍🤣
Thank you for mentioning your coffee! I just ordered 2 samplers for Mother's Day presents. 1 ground for mom, 1 whole bean for my daughter who is expecting. I'll keep it in the freezer for a couple months until she can drink it again. I dont drink coffee at all, but I trust your coffee taste buds 😊. Have a blessed day ❤❤❤❤
Oh what a sweet idea for Mother’s Day!
Heading over to check out your tea!😊

I usually watch on TV so I don't get to comment. I just want to say thank you for inspiring and encouraging me to step into what I love and grow with it.
Thank you for sharing what you do ❤️ it brings me so much joy.
Wow, 80s. We have been consistently in the 40s and low 50s here in South PA and it's been raining for two days.
Ohh yay for dark dark roast coffee! Thank you ma'am for that! 😁 By the way, I love the Guatemala Dark Roast and my husband enjoys it, he just loves darker the better roast coffee. I'll enjoy a variety. I feel like I taste the love and care in small batch roasted or craft coffee. The freshness of a recent roasting and the love put in convince me it tastes better. If you read this, tell Daniel, I for one, taste his love and prayers he puts in to his work there.
Also, our planting is after Mother's Day. We follow that and the 10 day but I the 10 day says you're fine and you're 15 days away from Mother's Day....trust me, we are waiting. It's biten us before. Lol lesson learned.
Yahoo! Got my coffee ordered.
So excited about that sample pack!! We ordered it before the video was even over!🎉😊🎉❤
I absolutely love the name for your dark roast coffee ☕️❤
I relate to not wanting a floured countertop. I put down parchment paper and dump out the dough onto that and then have very little mess left
Good morning Jess. Enjoyed the vlog.
