    Arguably one of the hottest topics in the AvGeek community over the past year or two is the Boeing 757. More specifically, whether or not it would be in Boeing’s best interest to relaunch it to compete with the competition (which is getting fierce).
    If it were to happen, chances are pretty good that it would be called the 757-8. Maybe even the 757 MAX.
    Whatever it’s called, this video takes a close look at the design concept I created for an all new 757. If it were to happen (of course).

    • @L33tSkE3t
      @L33tSkE3t 3 года назад +8

      @@ACPilot Not really much at all, definitely not as much as people like to say, the original 737 seated 85 - 130, the newest 737s like the NG & MAX 8/9 can seat up to 200. The Max and NG has a new fuselage, more composite construction, the Max getting new engines, in fact the size of these engines was sort of the issue that caused it's "design issue" not any traits it may have shared with earlier variants of the 737. Because the 737 was always designed to be an easy to run and maintain aircraft, it is built low to the ground so it is easy to work on and easy to load with cargo without utilizing signifiant ground equipment. Due to it being low to the ground and needing to fit new large diameter engines under the wing, the engines had to be placed further forward. This changed its maneuvering characteristics specifically, the way it pitches up and down in low speed. To compensate for its new flight characteristics and prevent stalls, the MCAS or Maneuvering Characteristic Augmentation System was introduced without proper pilot training (only needing to take a 1 hour iPad course to become certified) most pilots not even made fully aware of the systems functionality which led to the crashes.

    The 757 is an outstanding aircraft but building a new 757 from the ground up with some modernization to the design such as a 787 style nose as pointed out, new wings, fuel efficient engines, modern avionics, and new cabin interior would make the 757 a competitive aircraft.

      The 717/MD80/MD90/ DC9 had one flaw that irritated airlines: 3-2 seating. A similar design using the DC8 fuselage cross section with 3-3 seating would have been more popular. DC excessively fine tuned the DC9. They overthought it. Optimized it into a niche market, but was ultimately limited in what they could do when they needed to increase its capacity.

      @@davidhoffman1278 Actually 3-2 seating works in a lot of ways for short haul flights. For one, couples don't have to deal with a 3 person in their row. The 717 is my plane of choice especially in turbulent weather. She slices through clouds with ease.

    • @w8stral
      @w8stral 3 года назад

      @@davidhoffman1278 One main reason: Because of the 717, Delta Airlines is a cash making king. A220 still probably will not be as good as the 717 as like the MD80 it is a 6 seat wide aircraft. True, it is all new and shiny with new engines, so that aspect is better, but that is what should have been done with the 717. All short routes wanted the plane and why you cannot find them on the used market. Main reason 717 was canceled... was built in horrendously toxic/expensive California and Did not have a 737 cockpit... Otherwise, Short range airlines loved it.

    05:29 FYI Chevrons do bring the noise down BUT they also reduce thrust.
    Since 175-200kN turbofans are basically no more in 2019/2020 (although the PW1100G came in close) and there seems to be plenty of room for a GEnx-2B of the 747-8 under each wing you may take thst specific GEnx variant and use the excess thrust to make the 757-8 a "More Electric Aircraft".

    Looks nice, but pretty sure all the tooling for the 757 is long gone (save those bits in common with the 767). A clean-sheet design for the 797 is the way to go....surely a lesson learned from 737 Max debacle.

    Some 757 upgrade specs on my mind:
    FUSELAGE
    ▶ Optimize seating capacity by using a length that is in-between that of a 757-200 and 757-300, so that what is derived is a "757-250" + what makes the latest 737 a "MAX"...enter the "757-25MAX"
    ▶ Composite fuselage/empenage
    WING
    ▶ Sweep angle: 25° to 33° or even 35°
    ▶ Winglets of 737MAX or blended tapered/raked wingtips of the 777/787
    ENGINE
    ▶ Geared turbofan (LEAP-C engines)
    ▶ Carretted 1-piece or 2-piece nacelle
    FLIGHTDECK
    ▶ SV-PFD/ND with terrain database
    ▶ Dual HUGS with IR-EVS integration
    ▶ Three upper LSK or Touch-screen OLEDs
    ▶ One lower LSK or Touch-screen OLED
    ▶ Fly-by-light flight augmentation system
    CABIN
    ▶ Goodbye pneumatic ventilation → hello electric ventilation
    PERFORMANCE
    ▶ 8,000+ nm range
    ▶ 42,000 ft cruise altitude from MTOW
    ▶ Stepless climb to 40,000 ft at MTOW

    More 757s were sold with the Rolls-Royce RB211 engine option (over 60%) than the PW2000 which you didn't mention. American Airlines' initial order (after Eastern had ordered 25) was for 50 and many other airlines including US Airways and Continental followed, with many still in operation today because it is so good and well-suited to thin, long-distance routes. PW-powered 757 operators include Northwest and United. Aircraft brokers claim the R-R variant has a higher resale value and more RR-powered 757s are still in service today than the PW variants, which are generally reckoned to be quieter. It's replacement is likely to be the 797.

    It looks fantastic, I don't know if you mean to say that design would actually fly, but I would like to see the 757 reborn in a similar way. In my younger years I never really noticed the 75, but in recent years I've completely fallen in love with it. And, if nothing else, you've sold me on the idea that the 7_7 number should always just remain a brand. They should re-use it for any plane that's a similar-enough concept, and change the after-dash number for new models and updates. Boeing doesn't need to figure out how to extend the number scheme otherwise; no 2707 or 7207 or 857 or anything like that, it would just be clunky and awkward.
