I recently posted a video on why the 747-8 is a success despite slow sales. In that video, I briefly mentioned that the 787’s competitor is the a330neo. And then I started getting a whole lot of comments like these - people were insisting the 787’s real competitor was the a350.
It seems like this belief is widely held throughout the RUclips aviation community - a simple search of 787 vs a350 yields a whole lot of videos directly comparing the two. But I am here to set the record straight: The 787 and a350 are not direct competitors. Let me explain...

I've flown the A350 across the pacific and returned on the 777 and I found a striking commonality between them. This video makes sense of it all. The 350 is a massive plane. It looks small from the outside due to its styling but it is massive! Cheers!

Go back to the early 2000's so you'll know how the A350 came to be a competitor to the then brand new B787 on the scene at the time. "Cody" doesn't seem to mention that detail in his presentation. The A350 grew in size in time to drift into 777 territory to what people think about competing types from Boeing and AIRBUS. ORIGINALLY: 787 vs A350-800. Then the scene changed with the A350-900 and the A350-1000 even though the A350-900 was going against the B787-9 for a time until "XWB" titles started appearing with stretches of the A350 series. This column is meant for "Warp's" statement above. I meant to add: the A330 series started competing with B777s when Boeing got cleared to operate under ETOPS and in turn AIRBUS's A340s went bye and better versions of the A330 came into play against the 777 series of aircraft. A330s vs B777s. A350s vs B787s.

Very happy to see this explained! Will be interesting to see how the 777x competes with the A350 once the global crisis has tapered off and we can see true results.

Boeing truly has to learn a thing or two from the Airbus
A330 was first flown in 1994 and was a deeply modified A300 from the 1974 - still when they tried to modify it once more and called it a new plane, everybody thought it was a bad idea. And it was just in 2004. 30 years of basic construction being there and everyone went full boooo.
Meanwhile Boeing modifying it's 1968 737 (that heavily resembles the 1958 707 in many features) for the fourth time in mid-2010s (almost 60 year old "bones") - and everybody seems to like the Max (which I personally hate and won't fly if only not in a desperate need).
And then people be like "why does the max have so much problems?". It's like... bruh. You can't just stretch a 28.6 meters long plane up to 43.8 meters and pretend nothing gonna go wrong

I worked for the first UK airline to order the 787 "the Dreamliner", to replace all their old 767s.
It was really exciting, we got to go in the cabin mockups etc at the Farnborough airshow, it looked great,(& BTW we also got to see the A380 cabin mockup - & the Airbus test pilots did a stunning A360/A380 crossover in front of the entire crowd, as if they were fighter jets!) .... but..... the 787 delivery process was embarrassingly painful. The 1st aircraft were actually delivered YEARS late.
So late that by the time they were actually delivered I'd actually left the company, so the first time I flew on one, was as a full fare paying passenger going on holiday.
I was SO disappointed! It was rubbish. The much vaunted environment was just a gimmick, everything felt plasticky & flimsy. The plane creaked, rattled & squeaked all the time - the old 767s never did that.
I can't compare to a A350 as I have never been on one, but my opinion of the 787 is NOT good.

Very informative. But what it misses is the fact that range now takes priority over the number of seats. I’m a aviation strategy consultant myself and I’ve built plenty business plans / fleet plans for airline customers. And sorry to inform you, but for most of the airlines, the 787 and the A350 are the two options they have to select from for their long term strategy and planning. Large capacity aircraft are going out of fashion (need) for airline consumers, as evident by the fall of A380 and the 777s. As the concept of “thick routes” (point to point) is taking over, the “hub and spoke” model is going out of trend. Airlines want more and more point to point connectivity rather than huge number of seats to a hub airport and then smaller aircraft ops from there. Hence, it eventually boils down to, 1)Ownership cost, 2)yearly maintenance expense and 3)ability to make upto 75%+ PLF on most potentially available routes. So one can choose to ignore these aspects, but it is the reality and airlines are not picking between a 777/777x and A350, but rather between a 787 and A350.

Makes a lot of sense. The era of 4 engines jet is ending anyway. There are almost no routes that will demand a 500 passenger jet that can be profitably operated. They have to retire their 747s, and if they are also retiring their old 777s. They really need to fill the gap for the large jetliners, and it will be better to just replace them all with the same new jet that can fulfill all the roles they need and really bank on the economies of scale.

what I will say seeing as I've flown on both - Eitihad 787, Finnair and Qatar A350 is that the A350 is more comfortable because XTRA WIDE BODY.
787's were designed as a 2-3-2 but nearly every airline fits them out as a 3-3-3 thus meaning a 17 inch seat width as opposed to the 3-3-3 on the A350 XTRA WIDE BODY which has 18 to 18.5 inch seat width in economy.
Thats how I know when people saying they prefer the 787 are probably Americans who have never flown on either and just lying and just making stuff up to defend Boeing

I wasn't the only one who was up in the air about whether these planes were competitors or not.
Thank you for the great explanation.

Personally I have always enjoyed the A350 comfort. I have flown Qatar A350 on multiple round trips between Philly and Doha and always loved the experience. I also experienced Cathay Pacific's A350 between Tokyo and Hong Kong which was also incredible.
My only experience on 787 is between LAX and Tokyo on American which exceeded expectations.
    Great video!

The 787 is one of the best modern planes Boeing has built. Right up there with the 777x!

yeah i always knew a350 was too big for 787, and a330neo was just large enough for 787
the 777 always have been almost as big as a350

The 777 is bigger and wider then the a350 what are you talking about

Very good and informativ Video, cool Graphics.
So the 330neo is the Competitor for the 787?
And how much of the first 350-concept goes eventualy into the evolution from 330 to the 330neo?

A350s are wider and offers the same 3x3x3 seat config. Been flown in both I can say the XWB is roomier, seats are wider and engines is quieter. Can't say the same about japanese carriers as they use a different config for 787s (2x4x2) and nobody can deny this is the proper seat arrangement for the Boeing aircraft. I think both are beautiful and fulfill their purpouse over the average.

everyone thinks that the a350 and 787 are competitors because they look a lot alike

    • @SierraDelta-
      @SierraDelta- 3 года назад

And there very similar in range and and the amount of seats

    • @stoje8405
      @stoje8405 3 года назад +1

@@SierraDelta- nope, A350's seating capacity is much near to the 777 rather than a 787
A359 is about the same as B777-200series and B78X while A35k is about the same as B77W and B777-8
Also the range of the A350 is a bit further than any Boeing aircraft, except 777-200LR
