I always thought of Carly as one of the very best vocalists to ever appear on American Idol. Definitely an outstanding. professional voice. I remember this particular performance after all these years. She should be at the top of the very best female vocalists ever.
She deserves more recognition 💜

Carly's voice is absolutely beautiful!!! How did she not win American Idol??? I think she is one of the best singers ever, and I'd love to hear more from her.

I loved it in 2008 and couldn't stop singing it afterwards! I renewed its magic again in 2023 - the most dire, frightening, and hate-filled year of my life! Ms. Rae Smithson performance helped me pull pathos, hope and inspiration from a Beetle's song that I never even knew! I am belting in awe of America and I am a blackbird. My accent still beguiles me but I'm learning to fly! And YOU Ms. Smithson... good on you for standing up for yourself at the end...Thank you lady for singing!🎉

I thought this was her best performance on Idol. I hope she has a CD soon - I'd like to hear some bluesy stuff from her - she has the right tone to her voice for that sort of music .
This is the best arragement I have ever heard of this song. The strings are so beautiful and Carly had one of the best vocal performances in AI history.
This was the girl-hating season, so I'm not surprised that even the best vocalists that were female got the shaft.

I actually prefer this version to the Beatles version. I'm not sure why - but I do. I think it was beautiful, and this has been one of my favorite Idol performances of all time.
I agree Jan. The funny thing is that Daniel Archuleta said that he couldn't stop listening to her rendition of this when they were all on Larry King Live.
So the season runner up recognized how magnificent she sounded singing this.

Whoever thinks this is better than the original is on something....this is NOT a song you belt. this is a song you feel and connect with....does she even know what she is singing about? (fyi, it was written about the 1960's civil rights movement)

Not at all, it's a singing contest after all...but just for your info. all the season she mention she recived her visa to u.s , and last season she got kicked 'cos her greencard was expired in the middle of the auditions ... this had a great influence on her voting. that's why she didn't won- and I'm a big fan of Carly , but everyone knew she had little chance to win

American Idol was a launching point for her. But I do have to agree that It would have been great if she didn't sound so much like Amy Lee. But she has awesome vocals thats for sure.. :)

Beautiful. She should have been sitting and wearing something black and feathery. Her voice tightened during higher notes- needs to stay open.

@Axellelieftina I didn't say that she can't help her voice. but it is very strange in how she tries really hard to sound like her. And I wasn't saying anything about her voice, its how she portrays herself in her songs. They are very much a copy with different words on them. She has amazing talent or she wouldn't be where she is today. I just wish she was more her and not what the band she is in is trying to be.
Wow I couldn't believe it when she got voted off! I really thought that she would've been at least in the top 3. I mean Shyesa or whatever can't sing as half as good as Carly. I wanted Caly to win. But she got voted off early. Sge's got great vocals.

I usually agreed with Simon for the most part, but he clearly was on crack when evaluating this performance. How was the song choice "indulgent?" Her explanation for choosing the song was the perfect riposte to his lame remark. Regardless, she did a lovely job with the song: emotionally connected; controlled but relaxed.

its not that shes a bad singer shes actaully very great but for her type of voice this is not the song for herd. IMO this song requires a much softer voice.
The only real problem i have with this song is that they used a piano instead of a guitar. Pual Mccartneys guitar work was earth shattering for my music world but by changing it, they kind of runed the song
