The real issue of racism is when some of those who belong to the majority race try to brush off your racist experience or not even acknowledge the presence of it because it is not happening to them. Racism is taught behavior. Education alone can change it.

During the Japanese occupation, the Chinese were mercilessly killed by the Japanese soldiers. The Japanese and Chinese were traditional enemies. The Chinese, to escape from the Japanese soldiers, used to hide in the homes of the Tamils and disguised themselves in Indian clothes. The Tamils helped the Chinese families hide in their homes when the Japanese soldiers were killing them. A Chinese family came to hide in my great grandmother's house and a few Japanese soldiers barged in and shot and killed the entire Chinese family right in front of her eyes. My grandmother who was a child also witnessed it. Now they have forgotten their history and have become racist. As a Singaporean, I am utterly disappointed with this CNA forum as it doesn’t deliver the right message, it didn’t dig deeper into the root of this issue. What's the purpose of this forum? To cause a divide among the races? Why Singaporean Chinese who had experienced racism did not participate in this forum? Where are our Eurasian friends? How is this an open conversation?
A personal story of mine. Football is generally played by mostly Singaporean Malays. Being one of the few Singaporean Chinese who likes to play football, I often play with my Malay friends. Whenever I make a mistake on the field, a few of my Malay teammates will say things like "Cina Babi”, "Cina don’t know how to kick a ball." Whenever we play against a Chinese opponent team, my Malay teammates will say "you should join the Chinese team lah"
Even though their words were hurtful, I would take it as a pinch of salt. I understand there will always be a difference between us, language, culture, I need to respect that.
I am a positive person. I know can’t change them but I can improve the situation.
I do believe one must be initiative and effort to create a bond or a friendship with others. So, I thought to myself why not try to create some commonality with them. I put in the effort to learn the Malay language and culture so that I can build up a rapport with the team which did work. At the end of the day, we just have put all the bad experiences behind and we grow as a team together regardless of race. I think everyone needs to have empathy. Empathy is when we put ourselves in another's place - to walk in their shoes and see the world through their eyes, understanding their situation.
Back to the CNA video, I find that some of the participants' experiences are taken out of context. I must say that the Chinese lady was clearly fearful of offending others.
And hating the smell of curry? (I freaking love curry) Is he referring to the 2011 news? If so, it was reported by the Straits Times, that it was a migrant family from China who complained about their Indian family cooking curry. wiki.sg/p/Curry_dispute_(2011) This raised more questions; do we need to relook at our immigration policy? How can we better integrate new citizens or foreigners from different backgrounds and cultures into our Singapore community? The Chinese asking an Indian why the Indian's name is so long. Is the Chinese really racist or is the Chinese asking purely out of curiosity? Why the boy didn’t want to sit beside the Malay man? Was he being bullied by Malays in his school? Did his bad experience hurt him mentally? People need to see the bigger picture, ask deeper questions.
Whoever created the term 'Chinese privilege' is definitely a racist. 'Chinese privilege' does gives people a feeling of anger and hatred towards the Chinese. What about those Singaporean Chinese who have fallen through the cracks of society? Unable to financially support themselves. The older Singaporean Chinese generation is unable to find a job because they are not fluent in English, only know how to speak Mandarin. Where is their privilege? Why is racism on a rising trend in Singapore? Unfairness? What's their fear? We need to ask more questions and discuss further.
We, as a human-being tend to judge for themselves the intended meaning without first seeking the truth. When we finally seek the truth, our sense of believing in justified explanation is skewed from our own emotional reactions. Hence, we need to be more empathetic towards others.
In conclusion, I want to remind fellow Singaporeans who are watching this CNA forum. PLEASE watch this with an open mind and not jump to conclusions. I do agree there are a few bad apples amongst us, but see it as an individual and not the entire community. An individual who needs to be educated and not heavily criticize.
Singapore is where everybody should have equal opportunities, feel kinship and brotherhood with people of different races and religions, and share the same Singapore nationality. We are Singaporeans, we need to be pragmatic, more EMPATHY less "wokeness".

Your post is big and my reply is short, but I think I understand your point. I have been working with behaviour scientists for 6 years and we cannot produce an answer for why people act "racist". It is mostly from ignorance et cetera. But to be the person to claim something you have the burden of proof. Media is talking about racism as it is an exact science. The "true" cause is most likely way more complex.

My man, listen to the girl at 4:46 . There is no harm in accepting that a "privilege" naturally stems over time, whats more important is that we have to uproot it.
Privileges exist everywhere. In USA Europe you have white privilege, in Middle east you have Muslim privilege, etc. Simply admitting that a privilege exists doesn't make you a racist, but rather it shows us a mirror, a reflection of our society.

Agreed. I was also one of those chinese boys who got bullied using racist terms by minorities in the soccer CCA during my secondary school days. Minorities form the majority for that sport.
Majorities DO face racism, but nobody is acknowledging it.
Yet now only minorities are complaining about racism. And what about the caucasians? You don't see them present here or complaining.

In an English school, you find only multi-racial children studying from all walks of life. My China mother being uneducated spoke to me in Hokkien. Hence, today i have realised only well-educated Chinese speak Mandarin in fact the whole of Communist China is the only highly educated country in the world. Even, a Queen's scholar is not educated unless he is highly educated in the superior language Mandarin. My China mother had made a blundering mistake sending me to an English school. I hope young Singaporeans are above the nonsense that is currently triggering a massive retrogression in the western world. Young people in SG have no clue how good they have it. You have three major ethnic groups who all value hard work, achievement, peace, family and coexistence. If you feel oppressed in SG in 2021, please realize that millions of people outside SG would give every penny they have to be "oppressed" in SG. Before moving back to Taiwan, I lived in Los Angeles. People shooting other random people for no reason was normal. Attacks by blacks against Asians were so numerous that the news stopped reporting on them because it was so ridiculous and frequent. Don't let SG turn into a land of "oppression" where people manufacture grievances and victimhood as a tool to divide society.

Minorities in Asian countries gets horribly discriminated for their race and religion. Singapore has racial harmony and the disharmony in Singapore is due to the disparity in wealth and opportunities. Singapore's minorities are well represented in Government and have done well in the private sector.
Traditional careers in Politics, law and banking have minorities in high positions. The minority races have done well compare to their peers in their home countries. Wealth and poverty exist amongst all races and most prevalent amongst the seniors and elderly .

@@Oreo-vh7rk If you think racism in Singapore barely exists, then you've been blessed with an environment where you meet saints on almost a day to day basis, or you're just ignorant. People who are malay, indian, an immigrant from Philippines has experienced our own fair share of racism, some microaggression, some are flat out blatant biasness and mistreatment towards us, which is inclusive of being targeted because we belong to a specific ethnic group which is a minority here. I legit faced blatant discrimination and attempted bullying from my schoolmates back in high school due to being filipino. It made me aware of the fact that, even though i'm accepted here as a resident of the country and been given respect by them to some extent, I will never truly stand as equals to individuals who are full of pride, arrogance and racists. That doesn't mean all of Singapore are racist, but the truth is that racism is real, alive and prevalent in Singapore today. Just don't ignore it.

Singapur merged as The State of Malaysia in 1963. However after political disagreement and RACIAL disputes. Malayssian gouvernment unanimously voted to kick Singapur out of the unión.
I wonder who was the main caused of those RACIAL problems. But if it was Singapur (wich probably was) i really doubt that they have changed so much since then. Specially now that they have power, money and influence.

I actually agreed with you. But commenting about the curry smell does not mean that Indians are smelly. I am not bother with the spice smell on the Indians. When I was young, I thought that the Indians use spice as some sort of cologne or perfume. Hahaha! I guess that I really like that smell! One thing to note through, I worked with young children. When my Indian co-worker bought curry for lunch, she would notice some kids would sneeze like crazy because of the curry (Not a good sign during a pandemic!), so she would have her lunch outside to make it easier for the children. Thankfully, my coworker understands that some Indian spices do irritate other people's nostrils so she understands why certain people reacts so negatively towards the curry smell
