The first B series engine was the Jdm B20A that came in 1985-89 Honda Accords and Jdm 84-87 preludes. It came in 2 versions. The Blacktop version which produced 145 hp (the newer version) and the goldtop version (older version) which produced 160 hp. I have one of each of these engines and even today they are not to be slept on
The B20A/B21A/B18A in the accord, vigor, and accord aero deck, and honda prelude are completely different drom the B16/b18/b20B engines they may be named the same but they are 2 different series of engines... Additionally the B20B/B20Z (modern b20 like the crv and orthia engine) short block is different from the B16/b17 and b18 short blocks because it uses Siamese cylinder wall sleeves as apposed to the individual cylinder walls like in the b16/b17/18!
Not completely different, but you're right not as similar as the newer B16/B17/B18/B20's. I used to have a BA5 1988 Prelude 2.0Si 4WS which here in the states came with a B20A5 motor. The B18A and B20A based motors in those models you listed which came out before the first B16A VTEC motor are very similar to each other, and still share a lot of overall design and dimensions with the later B18A/B18B 90+ Integra motors and the B20B/Z CRV motors. In that B20A Prelude motor for example, the cylinder bore and spacing are the same as the later B16 and B18 motors, the head bolt pattern is almost the same (as i recall the 4 center most holes are the same, but the 4 on the front and back are slightly off), water and oil passages are basically in the same positions etc. and the valve train on the non-VTEC B18/B20 motors is also exactly the same dimensionally. I dropped a 90-93 Integra B18A intake camshaft directly into the B20A5 and it just fit - minding that the 'snout' end where the cam gear bolts on was maybe 5mm longer than on the B20A5 camshaft so the timing belt was hanging off the end of the cam gear by about 5mm, without cutting the snout to match it to the B20A5's camshaft length. Ran just fine that way though. Some of the main reasons those original B18A and B20A motors never gained popularity with the Civic/Integra swap crowd (again just from memory) include that they both had worse oil lubrication issues around the connecting rod races and journals on the crankshaft which would lead to premature bearing failure (compared to the revised B18A/B and B20B/Z at least), the 4 front/back most head bolt holes being just slightly off from the newer B16/B17/B18 VTEC head bolt holes meant higher cost to do just a head swap (the LSVTEC/B20VTEC oil line was still the same process, but you'd need to machine those 4 head bolt holes in the head to be slightly larger to accommodate the slightly different spacing on the older block), and that different spacing also meant custom head gasket. In the case of the Prelude B20A motors, they were cast to lean backwards in the engine bay to clear the Prelude's low hood line, which meant sitting them in a Civic or Integra was also more of a pain due to engine bay space, top to bottom clearance, axle angles etc, and with the B20A Preludes they had hydraulic clutches and cable shifters, vs the Civic and Integra which had cable clutches for the first few B-series chassis, and rod shifters through all of them.

Dumb question: First gen CR-V has the B20B engine. In terms of reliability is it as good as the other B engines? I only see the CR-V having that engine.
I think they only put that engine in the crv as it was larger in displacement. With the longer stroke it make more torque to move the heavy crv. It was never designed to be a performance engine. Because of the longer stroke it cannot rev as high.
So I have one question. I’m 15 and when I’m 18 I want to buy a First car, a Honda with a B series, can all B series be fast and much hp, so the b16 is the legend but can a b18 with V-TEC give the same amount of HP?
Hi mate the b series is not a very powerful engine on its own but for its size is goes very well. If it's in a Civic or integra the light chassis also helps. I wouldn't recommend getting a powerful car as your first as i promise you will do some silly things. A b16 civic would make a great first car.

So what type of B18 could the engine be? B18A1? Or what type ?

thoughts on a b20z?
Good engine will you swap the head to vtec?
Iv a mb6 b18c4 engine with skunk2 stage 1 cams Skunk2 inlet toyosports exhaust manifold head should i get it tuned to really get it proper
Hey mate definitely. Especially with the cams the engine will have more air than before and will be running lean.
Fuck ok hondata is up next so. Thank you
@@JarrodWillemse bought an obd1 p28 socketed. How many horses do you think ill gain i hope it worth it. That ecu wasn't cheap lol

Is b18cr is a vtec?
Is it good compare to b18c vtec?
I’m not an expert on that engine I would suggest to google it sorry.
Somsone needs to make aftermarket type R heads
I think there is billet heads.
What would the best bang for buck b series in that 160 to 180 hp range. All the names and numbers are confusing
You will need to get a vtec b series engine to make that hp at the wheels unless you are happy to turbo D series or b18b. Turbo option might be cheaper than buying a vtec b series engine.
My pr3-2 head has green paint by the dizzy, what's that mean?
The green paint means it’s an itr head.
My homie got one just sitting that his uncle built and we are about to try to restore it
What car are you going to put it in?
You missed the b20a5 and b21a1 found in the 3rd gen orelude
Ohh really I’ve never heard of them. Thanks for the extra info!
Im trying to make more power from my b20b, don’t know where to start tbh
How much more power? If you want heaps more than just go turbo if you want abit then look at a vtec head conversion.
How much should I be paying for a b18b1 w transmission ?
In australia they go for 500-1500$
Bought a eg hatch with a b18c1 gsr motor swap
Nice such a great little engine
So I have one question. I’m 15 and when I’m 18 I want to buy a First car, a Honda with a B series, can all B series be fast and much hp, so the b16 is the legend but can a b18 with V-TEC give the same amount of HP?
Hi mate the b series is not a very powerful engine on its own but for its size is goes very well. If it's in a Civic or integra the light chassis also helps. I wouldn't recommend getting a powerful car as your first as i promise you will do some silly things. A b16 civic would make a great first car.
sadly the B series wasn't design to position like the K series. It'll put better power down to the ground.
Yeh the b series isn’t as tall and sits further back for weight distribution. Also don’t need engineering here in Australia.
Okay I got a b16a2 and I’m trying to see what I can do to it I’m surly trying to push 200-250hp any ideas on how I can push that much obviously without motor swapping
Hey mate the easiest way to make that will be with a turbo. Na that power is going to be hard to achieve unless you go b20.
Why are you changing your intake box to a whale intake pipe? Are there any improvements in power or else?
Whale penis intake has a larger volume and pipe diameter. It helps to remove a torque dip in the middle of the rev range some other intakes have.
@Jarrod Willemse thanks for the respond. I'm gonna buy the intake this weekend.
B16 with turbo I have
Noioceeee how much hp?
I have a b20 in my integra (first car) can anyone give me any tips on how to take proper care of her ? Please 🥺
Just keep up the servicing they are pretty bulletproof proof not much goes wrong.
you forgot the EG ballade and EK ballade
What is a ballade? I never heard of them. I will have to google now.
B16b was in the civic type R. Not integra type R witch integra R was the first ever type R created in the US. !!!!
Yes correct.
How many miles are too much for a b series engine?
All depends on how they were serviced and driven. A good engine can do 500,00kms
@@JarrodWillemse okey thx
Anyone here can still me if PR3-3 head is b16 or 18?
Think it’s b16. The number indicates the type of cylinder port. Different models had different castings.
Forgot b16a4
What did the A4 come in?
@@JarrodWillemse 96-00 ek4 SI-RII jdm version, serious engines pushing 174bhp
I hope you get to see this comment . I’ve googled and RUclipsd this question I have . So about 1-3 years ago I saw an integra and I asked the shop if they were selling it . He said that it was a lady’s but that she never came back to get the car. When I looked at the engine stamp all it had was “B18 “ . No letter nor number after the “B18” . So what type of B18 could the engine be? B18A1? Or what type ?
Thanks for reaching out. Unfortunately I don’t know off the top of my head it’s probably going to be a google question sorry.
H22a1 orrrr B?
K series haha
Hey mate, I’ve just been scammed by a website called JJH engines in the USA. I was buying a b16b and it ended up being a fraudulent site. I was wondering if you have any recommendations in Australia that I could get one built or buy one stock with a lsd gear box. Cheers Dino
Hey mate that's really sad to hear. In australia there are few places that stock JDM engines and they overcharge. Usually i buy off marketplace and go and inspect it myself. You can hire a truck to pick it up if you have a small car. In America i heard JDM california is good.
@@JarrodWillemse thanks mate. Yeh I will just have to buy a local one, I have started to look on market place. I’ll msg you on Instagram as I just wanted to ask you a few more things about the gearbox side of things. Cheers.
Aerodeck came with a20 not b-series
I think Japanese got the b series
