  • The Super Mario Bros. Movie is finally here, but reviews are extremely mixed. While The Mario Movie is praised for its incredible adaptation of the video game franchise, it's also being called a disappointment because it didn't take many risks. Is The Super Mario Bros. Movie as bad as the critics say? Should Nintendo and Illumination not have played it so safe?
After years of anticipation, Nintendo and Illumination's Super Mario Bros. Movie is out into the world. It's a Mushroom Kingdom origin story that tackles Mario in a new way, featuring a bunch of great easter eggs along the way. What did The Super Mario Bros. Movie do well, and not so well?

Need to remember that this is also the FIRST attempt as an animated Nintendo film. This is laying the ground work for any future Mario Movie or the likes. It needed to establish a formula, the world, and the characters. That can be really hard to do in that 90 minute run time. Very similar to the Sonic Movie in that regard, the sequel was quite a lot better because it built off of the groundwork that was built from the first film. I have no doubts that it will have a bigger story in the sequel. I'm excited for this partnership with Illumination & Nintendo, I feel like over the next decade we're going to have a lot of blockbuster animated films coming down the pipeline with Nintendo's IP.

I'm actually a big fan of Mario's character growth in the movie. He just wanted to prove to the world that the Mario Brothers are worth something after being put down over and over. The reason why Mario is upbeat is because he wants change, he wants people to respect the Mario Bros name and by the time the movie is over, his determination, something that people frowned at, resulted in him saving the lives of billions. To be honest, the snappy pacing and fun nature of the movie, along with the outstanding cast of characters is the reason why this movie goes from having a 6/10 story to a 7 or 8/10 story. If there is one thing that I have learned from the Bad Guys movie is that a generic plot can be engaging if the characters in the story are.

Determination also makes a lot of sense as the core virtue of an iconic video game character given that you don’t beat a game by being a badass the whole time.

The beauty of animation is that it can be anything it wants to be. It can be dramatic, or it can be lighthearted. It can be hard-hitting and timely, or it can be carefree and timeless. Personally, I’m really glad The Super Mario Bros. Movie played it safe with the story and characters, simply because this is the start of a new film franchise and the entry point for a new generation of Mario fans, might as well make it straightforward and leave the door open to further explore these characters and this universe gradually. After witnessing things like the Universal Dark Universe, where they tried to establish a future that didn’t end up happening, I find it very refreshing that movies like this can be simple, and get bigger as time goes on.

And Mario and Donkey Kong learning to understand and then appreciate each other based on the fact that they both have to deal with the expectations of their respective fathers and the feeling of not being good enough in their eyes.
This is a deep and relatable problem that exists in our world. Why do most people just don't realize that this part exists ?

It was pure, mindless fun, which is something the entertainment industry needs more of. My only issue with the film was that despite the fact that it was named “The Super Mario Bros. One thing a lot of people don't understand about the critics, like Vailskibum, is that they're not judging the movie for its lack of deep themes, but for the lack of coherence. You can have the simplest of themes, but make it coherent and realistic (this means it needs to be grounded on reality, not that it needs to mimic reality). This movie is fun, yeah, but if NIntendo and Illumination ever release a sequel to it and use the exact same formula, it won't stand. It worked this time because of 3 factors:
      1. Nostaliga
      2. Characters' charisma
      3. Visual style and animation
These 3 factors get old... fast. Yes, right now this movie worked great and those 3 factors were used very well. I liked the film and I'm a fan of the Mario games. But as a professional screenwriter and marketing professional, trust me... it's already walking a dangerous long term path.

The way You explained it just Being a Funtime and Nothing deep is What I agree with The most. However, The Movie's pacing is my Biggest complaint.
For an Hour and a half lengthed Movie, I feel like They could've Slowed down at Some points to Introduce the Characters a little more. It's kinda like They're just there for the Most part. But I still appreciate it, This Movie makes Me feel like a Kid again.

    - So many Classic charcters like Hammer Bros and the Ghost was missing.
    - Bad pacing and really bad dialogue.
    - The made Bowser a Simp instead of just kidnapping The princess omfg that sucked!
    - Platforming elements where not at all like in any of the first 6 Canon games..
