- Nintendo and Illumination's The Super Mario Bros. Movie was the #1 highest grossing movie of 2023 for a while now, but Barbie has officially taken the throne at the domestic box office. How did Barbie end up beating Mario, though? Does the showdown between these two movies mean much in the grand scheme of things?

Good thing the Mario Movie is coming back for another run in theaters on the 27th, so their's a chance it'll catch back up. Either way though, it's still nearly the highest grossing animated movie of all time, and I'm proud of that.

Most people don’t even care about Charles. Only die hard fans really care. Even then why would I want to watch a movie where Charles gets barely any lines and instead im constantly hearing a non-Mario VA the whole time? I’d rather play some quality Mario games than watch the movie

2023 will be remembered as the strangest year of cinema in history.
Between the strikes, the delays of finished films, the box office failures, the decent films that didn’t get what they deserved, *cough cough* Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and most importantly, BarbenHeimer.
This year had huge releases that all flopped, that’s all this year will be remembered for when it comes to films ultimately.

she just proved the mario movie wasn't anything special after all and that recent ratings have been based on nothing but bogus trends. In other words, it's not how good the movie is, it's what people want to see at the time.
Me and my friend who never agree on anything both decided that mario did not deserve to be up in top 20 grossing. However, in hindsight perhaps it wouldn't hurt to remember these figures aren't being adjusted for inflation.
To be fair, the Mario Movie already has a huge box office for an animated movie. Animated movies rarely make over a billion, and the Mario Movie only got there because it managed to connect to every generation of Mario fans. The Barbie movie is a live action PG 13 movie, which a lot of block busters are, so it did kind of had an advantage(they are both very good adaptations though).

No, it doesn't have to be a competition.
I can't really say it really is a showdown since this is the only channel I know of who makes it a big deal out of it.
I'm more inclined for Super Mario Bros The Movie vs Sonic The Hedgehog Movie since both are video game movie adaptions.
Also, can we just appreciate that we are getting some descent to good movies this summer of 2023?

You realize Barbie has more mass appeal right? It's got 30 more years of nostalgia and it was cheaper than video games so more kids would have played with Barbies than mario
I kind of felt the same, where the Little Mermaid reboot a few weeks ago WAS actually beating Oppenheimer by both box office and audience score, luckily Oppenheimer did eventually made more money than The Little Mermaid reboot at the box office. I’m still waiting for the audience score to change their mind though.

One things for sure, the "criticisms" that both movies received only made them even more successful.
Barbie's success was marketing and general perceptions, Mario was the literal iconography alone for the most part, I suppose it was also taken more seriously in a sense if that makes sense.

I said this once @valiskibum this will never change the fact that Mario made a billion dollars in a month and became not Just the highest grossing movie in Nintendo history but it makes it the highest achieving animated movie ever so in conclusion I will say it again this does not diminish the Mario movies glory (even through the Barbie movie was surprisingly good for what it was)
