Lucretia is all around great Marty's intricacy Dave's vocals and riffing (hate me but they work insanely well in this sort of 'crazy' setting) Ellefson providing a stable foundation for others to build on, without the bass it sounds tinny as !@#$ and doesn't work Menza's unrelenting rhythm Definitely one of the top 3 when considering a favorite song
@@wadu6239We're not alone! I've listened to that solo over and over so many times. I think I remember him mentioning this one as his favorite before though... I go back and forth honestly but my first favorite solo on that album was this and for a long time. Then I got pulled into Dragons Kiss.. I should say obsessed!
Lucretia is special. In the "shit hitting the fan" part, before the minor arpeggio, there is the "falling down the stairs" section. Gets me every time.
Maaaaan this is my favorite solo ever, I've been trying to play it for YEARS, and was never satisfied with myself, I had kind of lost hope... But thanks to that video I decided to give it another spin, and for some reason I was able to play it well-ish in a day. Thanks Rudy!
Favorite solo: the intro solo to Selenium Forest by Plini, it was one of the first prog acts I got into when I was learning guitar at 14, the solo itself taught me everything about phrasing, feel, and technique, it's influenced the way I write leads now
Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms. Everything about that song and the guitar that talks back is amazing and captivating at all times. Especially the live version from the On The Night cd.
what I really like about you is the fact, that the youtube thing is just the tip of the iceberg. It is your profound knowledge and your intuition of the music you love.
rust in peace was the album that got me totally hooked into music and it is stil my favirote album to this day. When i started playing at around 7 i was huge on metallica, but then i discovered rust in peace and it just completely grabbed me and hooked me into becoming a better musician and guitarist. i am 15 now and that album never gets old
King Diamond's 1987 album Abigail is a concept album. The last song, Black Horsemen, is the climax (that's the word you were trying to think of btw) of the story that was told throughout the album. The end solo of Black Horsemen is probably my favorite of all-time, perfectly performed by Michael Denner. It has so much feel and emotion and musically sums up the whole story to me.
Nostalgia for a time or place you've never experienced is right in the nose, excellent point. This discussion-style format was really enjoyable. Often with music, there's a lot of impressions and emotions. I appreciate that you can put these things into words.
Brother, I clicked this video so surprised. I recognized you from occasionally seeing your shorts. I had no idea you were so well versed in guitar, let alone sharing love in Megadeth (and my favorite song). Much love.
Every casette had a favorite side that we loved one song and tried to hit to the right track by rolling it with a pencil or pinky finger... Marty Friedman solos are exceptionally written for sure. Seeing him live was one of my good teen memories. Thanks for bringing back the memories of casette struggle & great times.
Lucretia is also my favorite solo, as Rust in Peace is my favorite metal album. I am a die hard Rust in Peace fan, the only album that still ressonates deeply with me since my teenager years in early 2000. I almost cried many times listening to the bending part in third part of the solo. The melody in beginning of the solo is one of the most beautiful lines I heard in a guitar solo. I totally share the feeling that the last section of the solo is a farewel, like a sleeve swinging while dropping in the air, with some artificial harmonics that only Marty can do. The solo has its own storytelling. I can't put into words...
The transition solo by Dave at the start is one of his absolute best, imo. I feel like a lot of that album gets forgotten, but I think it's some of the toughest and fastest material Megadeth has to offer. Dave's vocals hit the perfect level of raspiness too. Weird jazzy thrashy speed metal
Hangar 18 and the dualling solo's is cool too! I still got my shoebox of a few tapes and recorded tapes ... BOOMER! When this stuff was new I collected the 45 singles with free game pieces and backpatch and Holy Wars picture disc and the clear vinyl with the game board and imported cassette singles!
Rudy - "I don't listen to metal" - Ayoub: This is my favourite guitar solo. The solo: Metal. Rudy: But wait, there is more. Nice video! Different approach, I like!
I think Lucretia was written for the solo and not the other way around. Bradley Hall said that was his fav as well. A key (no pun intended) to Marty's solos is he changes the keys the solo is in which he makes work since the individual licks are over just power chords that don't have a lot of tonality to clash with the licks. It's like he is expanding on the basic root 5th chords he is playing over and making an arpeggio building over it and into some type of more grand chord voicing. It doesn't matter if it's in the same key as long as it takes you by surprise and sounds good in relation to what's played before and after it. I saw them on the RIP tour - it was the Clash of the Titans with Anthrax and Slayer. Marty's from space. I have documents. My favorite I think is Analog Kid by Rush. If you have not heard it, it will probably surprise you. Why? I don't know, its just takes me beyond Andromeda.
I love how you described this. The idea of the sh*t hitting the fan is very well said. I feel like Nuno really did this perfectly with that solo from Rise
Ev’ry time the great Mozart was ask’d what was his favourite composition (out of 942 works from Klavier Sonatas to Concerti to Operas, 1762-1791) he always responded with the same answer : ‘my favourite work is always the one I am currently working on…’ LoL
Lucretia is also my favorite solo, what I like is that at the beginning of it, it has an Egyptian sound, which I love, and it has all slow, fast and very emotional parts, for me it is the perfect solo, even better than Tornado of Souls.
As much as I loved Friedman and Poland growing up I think the first solo that made me want to shred was Vital Remains - Dechristianize. I always struggled with speed (even Kirk solos kicked my ass) but this one was slow enough with just enough shred to make me play it over and over again until it worked. Now I’m learning new solos all the damn time and somehow a Glen Benton project made me do it, life is weird.
That final lick from tornado of souls that I just will never be able to play no matter how slow I practice it, and pretty sure it just came out accidentally as it makes zero sense when you analyse it, but sounds super dope when you listen to it. Most people covering it don't play it 100% or change it to something else. Yeah, tornado.
I almost forgot that You CAN play the guitar, lol My favorite would be Libra - Intervals, solo played by Plini. I love his style, his "storytelling". I was still a beginner ish guitarist when i heard it for the first time, and i just wanted to learn it. So... without any musical knowledge i just learned the solo 😂then i took a guitar lessons, so i could learn the basics. It was hilarious because i was learning the basic guitar chords, while being able to play something like that. And for this day, this is my favorite guitar solo.
For all the metal solos I love, if you were to ask me my favorite guitar solo my mind immediately goes to the solo on Kid Charlemagne by Steely Dan. Larry Carlton is just ridiculous. I think that guitar solo may be the most perfect example of phrasing ever and it encapsulates everything you discussed in this video.
That's the Megadeth solo that screams martie Friedman the Most.... Btw for me it probably would be right now : stabwound( necrophagist) , Sakura( within Destruction Jason Richardsons guest solo) , pagan( vitalism), tightrope( August Burns Red jasons guest solo) and Winter madness ( wintersun ) in no order
oooooohh boy did not expect the wintersun name drop.....the solo for death and the healing, or time takes it for me but winter madness is probably my favorite overall song by them
Perfect analogy with 💩hitting the fan 😂. My faorite solo is "second heartbeat" by avenged sevenfold. It reminds me of a racing game i used to play at chucke cheese as a kid. One of those 2 player racing simulators. You can choose the race track and the one that sounds like the solo was called "monterey bay" and you race alongside a beach with that beautiful music playing. And also the solo is great. Very melodic slow build up and then the 💩 splatters all over the fan at the end. If anyone is interested look up the solo guitar cover by Martin Roning or Swarmer. They both play it perfectly
How interesting and atmospheric this video is. You reminded me that this solo is on of the very first things - alongside with Tornado inter. riff and Poison ending - that made me fall into Rust In Peace and Megadeth
I know this probably doesn't count as a "guitar solo," but it kind of fits that definition. If I were asked what my favorite guitar solo is, I would say "Chris Christodoulou - The Rain Formerly Known as Purple", especially how it sounds from 5:16 till end, although the whole track have incredible energy.
Your analysis breaks down the sound to be very jazzy. Much of what you dissect about tension building and release is comparable to a lot of great jazz soloists
I wouldn’t be able to answer this even for just solos. There are so many good ones. From Megadeth in particular especially when Marty was around my favourites are from Symphony of Destruction, Lucretia, Killing Road, and Victory.
Mike Oldfield had a lot of great guitar solo's. Listen to Heavens open. Corny song... Extreme shirt guitar solo but with so much intention... Mike Oldfield is the only guitarist I know who can make a guitar cry!!!!😢
My favorite Solo is Buckethead- Soothsayer. Last year I had a period of 6 months where I did not play the guitar because I could not get rid of my tendonitis. Whenever I listened to this solo, I would ask myself if I would ever be able to play again and thought to myself that I definetly learn this solo one day. Now I am playing again for 6 months but I did not even try to learn the solo because its still just way too hard lol. :D
