Here's the thing... IF modern players are so much better than the 90s plumbers, the increase in international competition should be offset by the increase in NBA talent.

That’s just bad logic. If you’re at the top improvements are marginal. So with other countries only recently investing in the sport to a similar degree as the US the level of improvement would be much greater. Now in Europe you can make a great living as a basketball player, back then you couldn’t, so with this you are getting much more attention from young athletes that see Basketball as a way to be a pro instead of trying to be a soccer player for example. More interest means more quality talent coming to the game. In the US the improvement comes from, training, diet, gear, recovery, etc… This means they have made marginal gains (at a pro level marginal improvement makes a big difference) but still improved. So ultimately two things can be true. The current USA players are better players than their predecessors, maybe just by a little bit but that’s all you need, while other countries have made massive leaps forward compared to their past teams.

It's quite as simple as looking at how many NBA players played in 92 and what teams they were on. Look at the individual awards.
Yall really hate Lebron that much? There's 3x as many NBA players , 4x as many international mvps, and 3 dpoy ALL international.
But yeah let's ignore ALL those facts and just go with the 92' dream team met even competition and they just blew everybody out

@@emilem12 So, you`re saying team USA `24 is better than `92 because they are playing better competition overall? So, by your logic, if team USA `24 had Joker+Luka+SGA+Giannis+Wemby on their team right now, they WOULDN`T be the best ever because they weren`t playing better competition? As that is what team USA `92 was, the best players IN THE WORLD. How does that sound sane to you?

HOWEVER, 2 of the most unathletic players in NBA history are CURRENTLY dominating the league (Joker and Luka). Now, it's basketball has gotten better worldwide... However, that does not matter IN RELATION (google it) to USA Basketball. In simple terms, if the countries outside of the U.S. have become "better at basketball", THEN the U.S. has also become better as well relative to other countries. You compare how teams play vs the competition they actually play. In 1992 the closest any of the competition got to the Dream Team was 32 points. In order for this years team to be even considered as good as the 1992 team they would need to dominate just as much. Only winning by 4 points and 1 point clearly shows they aren’t as dominant. The guy they are guarding, outside of AD, would just shoot 3s over them and then dribble around them when they close. The old NBA was so bad at shooting that they had to move the 3 point line in and let the "hall of famers" shoot girl 3s. LOL What, are we amazed now that guys could hit 15 footers, even scrubs can consistent hit 15 foot jump shots. This propaganda that nobody knew that the 3 point shot was worth more is so stupid. @@user-tp4ii6hs3lYou're clearly too young to know coaches simply did not permit players to shoot a lot of 3's and if you were a young kid shooting off the dribble 3's the coach would bench you even if you'd hit a couple of them.
The idea was simply that the easiest shots are closest to the basket. The idea of it having 'more value' to them simply didnt outweigh the value of people trying to shoot 3's with handchecking(obviously making shooting contested 3's way harder because a 'rip through' would simply be a turnover over having a very skilled big man shoot paint shots or great slasher or midrange shooters taking close shots which by the way, all of them are way more contested in a congested paint with barely any spacing.
If what you were saying was true, the 50's wouldnt already have multiple players who consistently shot from 3 even deep 3 area's like Jerry West, Gael Goodrich, Pistol Pete Maravich even though there was no 3 point line.
It also doesnt explain why players who were great 3 point shooters in the 80's and 90's like Kerr, Bird, BJ Armstrong, Danny Ainge, Tim Hardaway and a long list of others who didnt shoot more than three 3's tops even though they consistently shot around 40%.
Hell Sharif Rahim and Mark Price were one of the two known players who actually shot off the dribble 3's on a somewhat high volume for their prime with about 6 a game, because they had revolutionaire coaches who allowed them.
Don't forget, even Curry didnt take more than 5 threes his first 4 years of his career and first attempted more than 8 in 2015 as the best 3 point shooter of all time let alone the rest of the league. Do realize that even the WORST 3 point shooting team in the league right now, attempts more 3's than that Warriors squad not even 10 years later.
Thats how long it took for people to realize its value. Around the Warriors and Houston Rockets era and I doubt that pre-2014, players just 'couldnt shoot'.

But '24 USA has actually only had 1 quality, dominant win despite ridiculous talent advantage over every team they face. I have been arguing all along that if we had a time machine, and this '24 team faced the '92 Dream Team, the Dream Team would wipe the floor with today's players. First, who would guard Michael Jordan on today's team? Nobody. You would have to have to double team him. Even if you put Lebron on him, you would still have to double MJ. He was just that damn good. And who would you double off of? Larry Bird? Magic? Shit, you don't want to leave anyone on the starting 5 open for a shot, cuz they can all knock down jumpers.
Dream Team is taller/bigger than today's USA men's team. They clearly have a height advantage with Robinson, Ewing, Malone, Barkley, Magic, Bird, etc. They had a basketball IQ advantage, as MJ, Pippen, Magic, Bird, and Stockton combined have a greater level of b-ball IQ than the entire today's Olympic roster combined. Do you even want to compare the number of NBA championship rings the original Dream Team had? MJ - 6, Pippen -6, Magic - 5, Bird - 3. I'll just end there. I don't even want to bring up # of MVP awards in comparison.
The Dream Team played better defense. MJ and Pippen were defensive monsters. Ewing, Robinson, Barkley, and Malone...no big guy wants to be defended by any of those dudes. Barkley and Malone would be dishing out elbows to your ribs all day long. The Dream Team would simply out rebound this year's team. Cuz they work hard, they box out, they understand that rebounds wins rings or in this case, gold.
The Dream Team's bench is just amazing. Once the first team comes out, you gotta deal with: Stockton, Malone, Pippen, Ewing, and Drexler. C'mon man, that's like an All Star starting roster, right there. Off the bench!

In 1992 players around the world just started going to the NBA. Prior to the 1990s players from many European countries weren't allowed to do it and also the NBA didn't want foreigners. That doesn't mean international players in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s weren't as good as today, it just means that back then the rest of the world had their best players playing in their own countries. The reason why they didn't play in the NBA had nothing to do with their skill level.
I know it is hard to believe, but back then countries had their players play in their national leagues and countries had almost only their own players play in their national leagues. That was true for the American national league (NBA), that was true for most national leagues around the world. Taking foreign players into your league (or allowing your citizens to play in national leagues of foreign countries) wasn't a common practice. The world began to change in the early 1990s and countries started to allow players to leave and to accept foreigners into their national leagues en mass.

My working theory is that not everybody in the media raving about current players over older ones actually believe what they’re saying. They’re not trying to convince “the old heads” of anything. It’s all just business marketing. You want to sell the product that’s currently on shelves. That’s it. You want to get people who are just getting into basketball to buy tickets, season passes, merchandise, etc. You do that by keeping the rhetoric focussed on the current roster. If anything, the pushback just drives more engagement with the product. Newer fans can not only look at the current product but go digging into NBA archives to look at older games. Maybe it even increases the value of vintage merch by driving up interest.

Maybe substitute people off the bench for other stars but have a core nucleus of a team that knows how to play together. Now it’s just too political. 2) In 88 college basketball players loss to The Soviet Union 82 to 76 and that’s when and why the dream team was formed.
    3) Remember best European PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL players in the world who played with and against each other all the time. The game was based on 1980 and 90’s Physicality so the European PROFESSIONAL had a advantage over young college players. And that changed when the us was allowed to let NBA players play in the Olympics ( remember we had to petition to get our best to play against their best) 43 points a game avg. win by the NBA best.

Which is still better than current Olympic team. But if Larry bird would be on his prime, and the 11th player was not a college kid, then it would probably won by much more. Like 20+ points on average. They won by 44 on 92, with an injured Bird and college kid. Not to mention Barkley was the top scorer. MJ was not by any means playing at 100% all games. He was not challenged, if he was I can only imagine the average to increase past 50 ppg.

    Love the breakdown.
In terms of international performance, it’s crazy to me these pundits calling the 2024 team better is absurd.
One of the monumental factors when playing internationally is mental fortitude, like the times the US has met the Soviets/ Russian hockey teams that on average was better teams.
Talent doesn’t matter if you can’t play as a team and most of the guys on the roster probably thinks themselves better than any coach out there.
The Euro Football Cup comes to mind where the “best” team has lost the finals plenty of times because it’s a team game and chemistry and teamwork wins championships. Not talent.
The Dream Team is by far the best team whereas talent on the rosters will always be up for debate.
