Yes, this was absolutely 100% the Comic book store's fault for not checking before putting it up for sale. Moreso especially when it's a Key Book. I bought this beautiful Incredible Hulk #180 last month on Ebay (easily a 9.0), it came in the mail, I opened it and discovered that the Marvel Value Stamp had been cut out. I reread the auction description and nowhere did it mention that the Marvel Value Stamp was cut out. I got Ebay involved, showed them pictures. The Seller was mad and told me that I got a great deal and he would be be willing to give me a partial refund. EBay refunded all of my money and I sent him the book back.

Imagine how long it would take to do a proper inspection of every book in a comic shop. Do a page count, make sure there’s no writing or cutouts, check for trimming and restoration. I’m sure if you contacted them they’d make it right. I bought a book from a reputable Whatnot seller that had been trimmed. He did the right thing and gave me a refund and apologized.

It's the shop's fault for not checking one of their key books. It's your fault for not asking to see it in the shop, and it's your fault for not taking it back or at least calling the shop immediately upon learning of the problem.

  • @glennborchardt3533

I love how everyone is saying it's just the shops fault. It's also the buyers fault. I assume by looking at all the comments no one checks out anything they purchase? That's pretty foolish. If it was a dollar book I'd care less but a key issue I look at the cover, back cover, staples, check all the pages e.t.c. You both screwed up.

  • @ilovedisneyandcomics612

That sucks. I bet they bought it in a collection and did a quick check on it. I had that almost happen to me. I had been wanting a Disney book from WW2 time frame where Donald is carrying a flag on the cover. A shop near me had bought a collection of 40s-50s Disney comics and it was in there. It had a detached cover and they had $100 on it. I asked them if I could look it over. They got it down and opened it up. The first thing I noticed is it wasn’t even a Disney comic on the inside. I think it was a Dennis the Menace or something. They were so embarrassed and upset that they didn’t catch it. I got lucky because I was going to drop the $100 on it. Red Sonja is her favorite character, right?

  • @ShaneLars

I had same thing almost happen. But, it was the first Kang appearance, I opened and looked At it and it was the cover on a Thor annual 1 comic. The shop owner apologized and said it was new inventory. Lesson learned, always check the comic.

I am sure they/he checked his book. If he did not, then he shouldn't be in the business of owning anything, let alone a comic book shop. Put them on blast. Honest people spend hard earned money on this hobby. That is what Yelp is for. You have an honest, compliant.

This one is sellers fault 100%. As a business its your responsibility to make sure the product you are selling is correct. You can't pass on that burden to the buyer. Imagine having to open your cereal box to make sure its actually Lucky Charms and not Cheerios? Sounds silly right? Same with having to verify the interior of the key book you just purchased from a legitimate comic book shop is indeed the right book.

It's hard not to trust the Comic Shop, but if it's an older book that looks rough and it's a key (even minor keys) you look thru the book to make sure it's complete and the cover is at least attached. It's a tough one to call who's at fault, but if it's $50 or more, check your books. Just like when you buy vintage games, open it to make sure it's not a bootleg. That's the world we live in. Lesson learned. Sorry, that happened to you. I hope it doesn't happen again. As far as tape pulls, people should use Label Dot stickers. they don't pull the plastic, and don't catch the book when you pull it out of the bag or when you try to put it back into the bag. Nice channel, hope you have a good one.

That's totally on you for not checking what your purchasing. Especially if they are asking $50 or more for the book. I personally would have checked the value of the book first online, then checked every inch of that book to see if it was worth what they were asking before negotiating a price if i were really interested in the book. Plus your story is kinda vague for people passing judgement immediately on the shop. A lot of details seem left out of the story. I would have more questions before passing judgment on the shop...just saying

In my view, the comic shop bears more accountability. Sure, it's a good idea to check a $50 book, if for no other reason than to check out the back cover to make sure it's not half gone...but you shouldn't have had to. Who would intuitively think "ooh, I better check to make sure the inside comic matches the cover"?

  • @comicblove
    @comicblove 3 месяца назад +1

It's mainly the shops fault, he had to known what he was selling to place a price on it. Whne buying and got discount price, didn't you's both mention the condition if it's fully intact etc? If you had of checked at the time then you'd know if he was trying to scam you if they didn't you let open it or he'd discover he didn't check it either.
Go back and mention it to see what they say, then we'll know what kinda shop they are on how they handle this.

I always check raw books priced over $20 before buying. Those Bronze and Silver age in particular have a good chance of missing/torn pages, clipped coupons, pen writing inside, etc.
And if you say the dealer should check his inventory before selling. I agree. Though most dealers buy collections with possibly thousands of books. They might miss something while checking over hundreds of books a day... or they don't have time to check everything. The way I see it, me as a buyer need to do my own due diligence and check what I'm buying. The old saying goes "Buyer beware!"
If the dealer refuse to do that... I would rather walk away than spend money on incomplete books... which are probably worthless. And a lot of dealers are reluctant to take the book back after you went home and discovered the damage. They would have no idea if the book got switched out... or maybe you caused the damage after the fact.
The best is to go over the book with the dealer watching so you have that peace of mind of no surprises when you look at the book at home. In a good way... this prevents me from going over board at the LCS or conventions by buying too many books in one day. There is only so many books I want to look through in a period of time.

I believe the comic shop didn’t know they probably buy collections all the time from people walking into the shop. There has been many times I’ve been in a comic shop and random people just come in with a handful of random comics that they want to sell to the comic shop. And I don’t spend a lot of time in my local lcs so I know this probably happens more often than I think. Because every time I go to the lcs the guy has more random long boxes than they had last time. he hasn’t made it to sort through yet. So I believe the shop had no clue that it was just the cover of the comic and the guts were a different comic. If they are getting so many comics coming in to the shop they just don’t have time to go through them all. To check if all the pages at there. I have bought comics that the center fold was there but detatched or the back cover was missing and didn’t know. it is my fault for just assuming it’s all good and complete you know. If your a comic collector and buy a lot of comics you certainly understand that you will buy comics faster than you will read or go through them so it goes for the same for the comic shop. I wouldn’t pass the blame on the lcs or even the person that sold it they might not of even knew it was different you could probably go back to the same shop and see if the other issues of Conan are there in the same lot the original owner might of just had A few Conan comics and they were all detached while they were reading them all and they got mixed up when they put them up then later on someone just stuck them in a bag and board and sold it to the shop with out even looking at it. That could be a possibility of what happened we don’t really know but back then people sort of treated comic books differently than we do today it was just a disposable media form people would pick up at the grocery store fast station magazine and comics were everywhere back then it was like reading a newspaper while taking a shit it gave you something to look at. And people didn’t treat comics as well as we all do today. Like we all got our cell phones today for entertainment and all people had back then had Were magazines and comics you know. It’s just different times.

Definitely both of you and the comic book stores fault. I always pull the book out of the bag at the counter if the book is over $10 and go through it page by page checking for hole punches, cigarette burn holds, cuts, dog ears, what print is it, etc.. Now maybe the Comic store owner bought that in a large bulk buy and missed that comic but it is a Major Key and he shouldve checked it..
Either way take this as a lesson learned and move on from it. I doubt the store will admit it now that you left the store with it.

Your daughter's favorite marvel character is Red Sonja.
It's the shops fault. I bought a book from a new shop in my area. A few months later I got around to reading it and the back of the book was completely missing. Paid $20.00 for it and was really upset. The shop didn't fix the situation either.

Always Always Always have them open the book so you can check it. At the very least it should have been marked as a detached cover. Hope the store makes it right.

This is comic collecting 101 always open the bag and check the comic before you buy it. Were you in that big of a hurry that day? Overall it’s the stores fault and you should go back and just tear them a new one …but come on do your part.

The shop’s fault for sure. They had to know when they bagged the comic that it was loose, and they had to check it
