    Hey guys! Sorry for failing to upload last week; my recording software hasn't been working on my laptop, and Krita has been super laggy as well, so it took me a while to figure it all out. I will try to upload an extra video during this next week to make up for the missed upload! Let me know if you have any other questions about painting skin tones and I can make a Part 2 to this!

    Nice! When I paint skin, I like to put yellow over the forehead, red on the cheeks, and blue on the chin. I then put it on about 10% opacity. It adds more tones and makes things slightly more realistic

      This sounds more intuitive. I've been advised to use blue across the forehead to reflect the sky. I suppose that depends on lighting in the environment though. This is a very helpful tip, thank you!

      @malinnlisl1677 6 лет назад +34

      Thanks for that tip, I´ll defnitley try it out. I tend to be a bit scared when it comes to coloring so I don´t get much depth in my drawings but I think this tip will make it stand out more. I especially struggle with skin tones that are either really light or really dark, I just can´t get the right contrast.

    Thank you so much for uploading this! You explain things so nicely (is that even word? 😂)! Usually I do a lot of cell shading in my art works and the few "realistic" portraits I've done so far were in black and white, so I struggle a lot with skin tones. I want to be able to paint semi-realistically too, not just in my usual cartoony/ comic kind of style, so this tutorial is perfect for some future studies!

    Gr8 video. It was helpful to know your technique. Do you think it would be useful to paint different skin tones in separate layers, so that you can adjust their color at the end? You could use a fill layer that's filled with single color, then add a transparency mask to it and paint into that mask. That way you have better control to change color of all layers at the end.

  • @randahadi2425
    @randahadi2425 6 лет назад

    First of all thank you for this video!!!! I would appreciate it if you did another video regarding color. I've learned a lot from just this one video but I still feel like I need more help with skin tones. For some reason whenever I add the skin color and then do the hair color the skin tone becomes desaturated which means I have to change the color of the hair and so on. I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong? Or how can I fix this?

  • @cowboyfunkk

  • @torchakay8559
    @torchakay8559 6 лет назад +1

    This is great but another thing, that I personally do, is make paler skin tones less saturated, as they are typically have less melanin, therefore giving them less color in general. And then the darker the skin tone, I make it more saturated (unless the undertones are blue).

    I like to paint in gray scale to "get the colors right" and then drop the target colors on top of that.

    i did everything you did up to 2:16 where you started painting the skintone but mine didn't show the color as clearly as yours did. It was as if the transparency was very low. Please help me.

    great tutorial, really spot on theory as well! I always like to think of skin colour as operating on a spectrum of 'brown to creme/whisper' vs 'red to yellow' (much as you described it) as I find it gives the most realistic and nuanced skin tones -- I believe I read somewhere it is meant to be scientifically accurate to the real world, though I can't remember where I read it -- thought your point about sticking to the redder tones when working lighter was really interesting and will have to test that for myself! :D
    Also the thing you spoke about adding warmth to highlights and coolness to shadows is referred to as 'analogous shading' (though you probably already knew that) and is supposed to reflect how light works under sunlight in the real world, because as you mentioned the sun is warm in it's hue (and just generally warm) which is probably why it yields a very appealing result when used in art; it really bothers me when art tutorials only mention monochromatic shading especially when you can see that the artist makes use of warm and cold in their shading...
    I find that for cool lighting it gives a really nice result if you flip the script and make highlights cold and shadows warm :D
    Anyways great video, bit of a long comment; brevity was never my strong suit.
    Stay Awesome! :D
