Elvis was still with Anita Wood at the time in Memphis and Priscilla Beaulieu in Germany, he wanted to keep them both. It was peace time in Germany, Elvis never saw combat. His mom passed while he was in the service, he left on leave to be at her bedside when she died. His mother, Gladys Presley was his whole life and Elvis was never really the same after he lost her. That happy boy that always existed was gone, it was very sad. She died at 46. His dependence on prescription drugs started in the service to stay awake in the field.

Yeah this always a great interview. But I want to address something - As for people on here pointing out that Elvis was serving during "Peacetime", this is a common belief, but it's a total myth of History. Elvis was serving during what was known as the "Cold-War era".
It was a time of EXTREME heightened tensions between countries of America/ Russia and allies on both sides..
Not only historians of that era and Cold War historians, but also many that served in the military at that time, have talked about the fact that most Americans were unaware at that time... and many still to this day of just how volatile those times were, and unaware that the soldiers were training / preparing for potential combat outbreak.. or the next World War.
And Elvis himself was aware of this.
One of his commanding officers even talked about it in an interview.
To say it more accurately, Elvis, as well as many other person serving in military of that era, they actually were serving in what was known as - "Cold Peace".
(Cold Peace means while there was no declared war and official combat yet, but our military was on high alert and soldiers were training preparing for combat).
So it wasn't the "peaceful safe time of service" that so many over the years have mistakenly implied.
Anybody can go to Google and start researching this stuff, it's amazing how many today still don't I know this but they should.
And the reason this is so important for people to understand is because Elvis knew the risks, yet he didn't once reach out to his manager or anyone else to say "get me the hell out of here" or ask for a transfer or reassignmemt to a less dangerous region of the world to finish his service.
Elvis was serving near the Fulda Gap --- which at that time was considered one of the most dangerous places in the world for military regiments, as this is where the Russian military was threatening to start World War 3, if battle engagement started.
Remarkably Elvis was documented by those that served with him to have repeatedly asserted himself as "I'm here with you guys whatever happens".
It is one of the very reasons why so many of his Superior officers and many of his fellow soldiers that served with Elvis thought so extremely high of him.
We are all fortunate that the next World War did not break out at that time, but it's important people understand that Elvis historians are not the authorities on this subject of 1959 Cold War. They are not researchers or historians on the Cold War. They are only researched on Elvis primarily, so they have done a relatively bad job of addressing the dangers Elvis was in, serving as a soldier during this time.
He is to be commended and respected for taking his training very serious while he also was aware that there was a real threat of War at that time.
What's interesting is much of what is happening right now with Ukraine and Russia and all of the potential for other allies and countries to get involved... somewhat parallels what was happening during Elvis time of service back then.
Only difference is, unlike back in that era, today in 2022 everyone in the world is aware of the potential for this situation to escalate.
My Hope for all of our military currently serving right now around the world is that the heightened military awareness and threats of War will end up being nothing more than just threats, and will soon give way to peace.

Nancy Sinatra was Frank’s daughter. The reason Elvis looks so down because he had just gotten home and his mama was not there due to early death. Elvis was drafted. It really upset his mom. The Army wanted him to serve his time going to various bases and entertain l. He turned that down. Elvis wanted no special treatment. He wanted to serve like everyone else. The “ little girl” he refers to was Priscilla. She moved to Graceland grounds when she was 16. Elvis’ dad and grandma finished raising her. She completed high school in Memphis. Elvis was away most of the time doing movies in California. The rest is history...Priscilla and Elvis married in 67’ and welcomed their daughter Lisa Marie in 68’. Elvis never married again nor had anymore children. Priscilla is the one who saved Graceland after Elvis died. Priscilla and Elvis were always very close. To this day she will say he was the love of her life.
It was so sad when Elvis had to go to Germany right after his mom died. Elvis never got over the loss. He and his mama were so close. Elvis had a twin Jesse Garron. After that still born delivery, Gladys(mom) was told she couldn’t have anymore children. This made her very over protective of Elvis. Elvis struggled with the fact he lived and Jesse died. Jesse was first and within minutes Elvis was born. Elvis often wondered if he did something in the womb to cause his twin’s life. Elvis suffered a lot in his life, including hard losses of loved ones. Hope this adds to your knowledge.

Elvis hadn't been to bed yet from returning home. Nancy is Frank's daughter, but Elvis did have an affair with Juliet Prowse while making G.I. Blues, and at the time she was Frank's girlfriend. The no big romance he left behind in Germany was Priscilla. I have never heard anyone of any race that knew him say anything bad about him. He called everyone either Sir, or Ma'am. He had his demons like everybody else, but even in a time of primitive social media, he was under a magnifying glass. The thing that amazes me is that his entire career was only 23 years. There is a longer version of this interview. I like watching people discover Elvis. My mom was an Elvis fan, so I have literally been an Elvis fan since before I was born in 1966.

Jane H commenting ….. I think the reality hit home when he was back in Memphis, that his beloved mother was no longer there. As they had been very close, that must have been incredibly hard on him, still being a young man. He probably just needed to be on his own & have a good cry, but instead he was surrounded by people & had to do interviews. In Germany, he could have perhaps not had to face that she was gone forever, but once home again, that would probably have hit him like a sledgehammer. He is obviously very tired, having only got home hours before. Elvis was a shy person & never enjoyed being interviewed, from all that I have read, but he knew that was part of the job. He went on to make 31 movies over the next 8 years & was paid a million dollars for every movie, making him the highest paid actor in Hollywood. But he was very frustrated & bored, because he had wanted to be a serious actor, & they said he had the talent to do that, but the Colonel, his manager, said people wanted to see him dance & sing, & so that is what he was made to do. In 1968, when his movie contract was finally up, Elvis made a comeback into what he loved most, live performances.

Elvis was not traumatized. He was tired and exhausted from the whirlwind traveling back to the States from Germany, getting back to Graceland and settling back in, still probably grieving over memories of his Mom for whom he had bought Graceland in the first place, also probably finalizing details of his soon-to-be guest appearance of Frank Sinatra's "Welcome Back, Elvis" TV show, plus his soon-to-be re-acclimation to Hollywood for his first movie after his Army stint which, ironically, was called "G.I. Blues" about a soldier in the Army stationed (you guessed it!) in Germany! Lol! In spite of all that, he was extraordinarily gracious to these reporters in giving such a candid interview.

I was in the Navy during the Vietnam era, and as a woman I was stateside. But what I think Elvis was trying to express is that when you've been in the military for a few years, they regiment you. They tell you when to wake up, when to eat, when to sleep. You hate it at first, and then you get used to it. Then you go home, and for a few months you're disoriented, because no one is telling you what to do! He wasn't traumatized, he was very shy. Yeah I agree with you, Elvis seemed traumatized from the training, I can empathized with him in that matter too, and also due to the family tragedy by the passing of his mother while in the service.

When you say he looks like he didn't want to talk it's because his mother died aged 46 just after his badic training. So he came home and she wasn't there, whereas she'd be hugging him. He said being made to go in the army killed his mother.
The first inyerview you mentioned he wasn't around 40 .. he died when he was only 42 yrs old.x

The Hell you say,, lol,,, Elvis was 21 in 1956 when he had his first national number 1 hit, lmao Sinatra in the 20s??? lol.. no he had HIS first hit in the mid 40s. dang y'all youngsters have no concept of the time frame of history, I heard another "reactor the other night say he thought there was still slavery in the 1960s. And no, he wasn't traumatized by his army experience,, what you see here is just a cool collected Elvis, He was ALWAYS careful when answering the press's questions.

IF He did of course We wouldn't know! I do WISH YOU WOULD INTERACT WITH YOUR "AUDIENCE" LIKE JUST A "HEART" OR SOMETHING..... THAT MAKES A BIG IMPRESSION TO ACKNOWLEDGE THOSE THAT SUPPORT YOU.... I am saying that in a caring way!!!!! I have a channel and I respond to everyone I haven't uploaded in over a year as I lost interest but I made sure I responded to most .... Your so kind humble sweet I just think ( not telling you what to do ) but just some advice is all ...... Great Reaction

@@bwana-ma-coo-bah425 On December 20, 1957, while spending the Christmas holidays at Graceland, his newly purchased Tennessee mansion, rock-and-roll star Elvis Presley receives his draft notice for the United States Army. -- YOU must of watched some BS documentary because HE WAS... Drafted ..... It wasn't for a stunt to get teenage girls to fall in love with him LOLLL ... DO YOUR RESEARCH ---- ELVIS WANTED TO SERVE HE LOVED HIS COUNTRY SO SHUT UP ----------------- just 11 days after his 18th birthday, he had fulfilled his patriotic responsibility and filed his draft card on January 19, 1953. He subsequently went for a pre-induction physical on January 4, 1957, to determine his status.
Despite his status as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Presley gladly put aside that crown and dutifully marched to pick up his induction notice on December 20, 1957.

Frank Sinatra was bashing rock music hard in the press and it pissed Elvis off. Elvis said he shouldn’t have said it because just like when Frank started rock was a new trend. (Little did they know) Frank had a TV show and when he saw Ed Sullivan’s ratings shoot up for having Elvis on he changed his tune quick to get Elvis on . . . Which makes Frank a total hypocrite and Elvis the man !!!

A couple of the gs happened to Elvis while he was in the army. He lost his mother and was never the same after as they were extremely close..and while he was in the army they gave him amphetamines to help him stay awake. This was the beginning of his addiction. For me I am no less of a fan. He had demons yet he still always gave his all for the music that he loved and for his fans. He will forever be the king.

No,he was not in the field. There was no war going on . He just did his military service you can say in the field, but doing military exercises. In one of the documentaries ,one of his friends told that ,he used to go to a café and the owner let him use the phone,to phone home . He longed so much for his home ,he was devastated after the call . He was in a foreign country ,who had customs he was not used to,and the good was different ,the language and everything . Although ,it was called west germany at the time ,so there were a lot of americans and they had some american influences.
