      @Matthew Harrup if y don't use a heatsink it's going to over heat up faster then one with a heat sink which will impact your read and write speeds heavily. ssds work great at the right temp. If u go too high it starts go just not work as efficiently and then the read and writes take a massive hit and decline but eh you do you. Its only like 10 dollars or pounds for a heat sink. Some ppl will always do things against the recommendations but eh whatever.

    I personally left mine off to better expose the heatsink for overall airflow over the whole surface. sealing it wouldn't stop the ssd from heating up, but airflow over the actual heatsink would dissipate it more effectively. If those hole with a cover on was the most efficient way of removing heat, then PC manufacturers would have utilized a low form factor venting solution out the back of every PC case years ago.

  • @HearMeLearn

    For those wondering, Sabrent Heatsink does fit inside of the digital version PS5 but won't allow the PS5 shell to go back on. If you want this to work out you'll need to own the disc version. I have the Sabrent SSD and heatsink but sadly can't put my PS5 shell back on because I own the digital version, and yes I was ok with not using the SSD cover since I own a dust blower that I use to clean out my PC. Luckily I do own 2 extra slimmer heatsinks I bought way before So I'm good unless I end up with a disc version in the future.

    Gamers Nexus did testing and have the side covers off decreased internal temperatures of the PS5. So while it might help against dust, it certainly causes more heat concerns. If you clean it often enough, it should be fine without the side panels.
    Interestingly enough my PS4 Pro actually gets less dust accumulation without the top panel on.

I struggled knowing what heatsink to use with the NVME that would allow me to put the cover back on. After a bit of digging I found that if you buy the Sabrent M.2 NVMe PS5 heatsink (SB-PSHS) this replaces the cover you refer to. I purchased the heatsink with with the Sabrent 1TB NVME drive and it is an excellent kit. If you are interested you can see my video on it on my RUclips channel. That VP also said in the beginning that no additional cooling structure would be needed for M.2 SSDs in the PS5. So they must have underestimated the heat they will produce or the negative pressure cooling doesn't work as they hoped. I wouldn't be surprised if a thermal test showed it's better to leave the metal plate off. But dust is still an issue.

      Another youtuber tested this with it removed it was on average 2 degrees Celsius lower than with it fitted but both well below the max temp by like 20 degrees so fitting it isn't gonna give any benefits except dust control but not fitting it will result in more dust so although it will be 2 degrees lower at first the more dust that accumulates in that bay and all over the drive will result in a lot higher temps, so it be best to fit it. Negative pressure works, but temperature is still 5 - 8 degrees higher than cover off. For lower SSD temps, cover off still measures lower temperatures. If dust affected SSD performance Apple would have put some sort of dust protection on their MacBooks and iMacs but they don't, like 99% of PC's. A PS5 is a medium spec PC, with a fancy controller.

  • @ram-g-man
    @ram-g-man 2 года назад +8

    There should be some testing performed by preferably Gamers Nexus. My personal experience is that a beefier heatsink without the cover performs better than having the cover on. The tiny holes on the sides of the cover aren't optimal in cas your heatsink ribbons are oriented parallel with the M.2 SSD.

    • @OpinionFactChecker

      The size of the heatsink matters not if the airflow isn't directed over it!

  • @Cash0991
    @Cash0991 2 года назад +4

    It's worth noting that Tom's Hardware did temperature tests with heatsink and cover off, heatsink and cover on, NO heatsink and cover off, and finally NO heatsink and cover ON. Performance was BEST with a heatsink installed and the cover OFF. The cover ON with a heatsink installed was 2nd, but in some cases it was almost the same as NO heatsink installed with the cover OFF. If you don't have a drive with a heatsink, putting the cover ON will actually result in a much higher temperature. The worst out of the 4.
    So while they may say it's cooled through negative pressure, the real world results don't seem to back this up.

      Heck, if the cover wasn't required to be reinstalled, I doubt Sony would have included it in the first place. Companies don't just add parts to their designs for the fun of it. If they could save money by not including something and the product still would function properly, they would do it. I'm surprised anyone thought that Sony mustn't have known what they were doing from a temperature control perspective with regards to the cover, and that it should be removed and not reinstalled.

      You always stick a thin piece of aluminum to the top of that cover
      or even use aluminum tape to help transfer heat to the larger metal cover.
      Anything helps. I used to work in electronic manufacturing...Sometimes
      i had to make mods such as getting people in house to cut aluminum
      bars becuase prefab heatsink didnt cool it enough or fit/size didnt fit
      and would simply cost lots of money to get special heatsink made..or
      have the PCB re design..Then that might not fit into the enclousre..ect
      I solved it without increase production cost
      .There's rev changes made during production for many reasons.

      I’m biased on this whole argument! those aren’t air vents… those are screw holes lol. The PS5 air intake would pass over the entire M.2 heatsink with that silly cover off. I bet if someone did testing with a temperature probe, the SSD would run just as cool or cooler with that cover off! Just like they say to keep the side plates on the PS5. But the entire system runs cooler if you pull all the plates off. Sometimes it’s not best to always listen to the recommendation setups.

    The best way to look at it is if you imagine your SSD inside a tube where the air is going from one end to another, cooling the SSD. But if you cut a large hole on the tube around the SSD location you end up having way less efficient cooling since the air won't contact the SSD all around. And as stated in the video, leaving the cover off will also accumulate even more dust inside your system.
