My husband was the engineer on this album. He came up with the idea of gun shots, everyone had gone for lunch he stayed in the studio. They all came back he played it and everyone loved it.

New Wave before it ever became a term. These guys were pioneers.
Couldn't have put it better. I have thought this for many years. They are definitely one of the first proper 'new wave' groups alongside Roxy Music and others . They were years ahead of their time.
True. Aswell as influencing bands like Blondie, they also influenced a few new romantic bands too.
Not new wave. More odd ball rock that kicks ass
New Wave is barely the tip of the Sparks iceberg
The only thing New Wave about this is the singer's deadpan expression. To me, this is more like an inspiration for Queen.
We all should regard guitarist Ian Hampton a true hero of the people. The man called out Jimmy Savile's behaviour to floor management at the Top of the Pops studio after he witnessed the scumbag exiting the set quietly with a very young female audience member. Obviously Ian wasn't listened to, and for that the BBC should hang it's head in shame for eteternity and a day. Not a lot of people might not know about you and what you did Ian, but i do. And for what you did the country owes you a massive thank you.
Ian Hampton was not in the band when this clip was made, but he is a friend and a total hero. God bless him and Johnny Lydon for originally raising the alarm on Jimmy Savile.
RUDI UK deserved a medal
As long as celeb sexual predators are useful to other people of power and prestige, they will be protected by them...Only when they bring in less revenue or clout do the face the slightest of consequences, if at all...people protected Harvey Weinstein, R Kelly etc. because they profited off them. Savile was valuable to the BBC, the people he abused held no value in their eyes...
@@gozerthegozarian9500 Lets not forget the seniors at Stoke Mandeville and Broadmoor who were aware of what was going on on their premises too. This isn't a problem unique to the BBC

I'm 63 yes old so this record came out when music was so important..the guitar solo in the middle is ICONIC and still gives me the chills 50 yrs on..when it comes to air guitar and air drums you'll find yourself on cloud 9
I'm 28 and only discovered these two fellas like 13ish years ago or so. I can't really convey all that I'd want to about them in a single RUclips comment alone, so I will leave it at this: I'm so glad Sparks has finally gotten the kind of real recent/current mainsream attention they deserve with their new documentary. Legitimate pioneers.
Thank you. I'm 63 and discovered them via CHOM FM in Montreal in 1972. They are totally legit pioneers.
I’m 59 and I remember them when I was 10 years old. However I did not pay attention to them since then. I saw the documentary and now I am a true fan
I'm a lot older and only heard of them because their movie documentary was on my plane. Even then, I thought I assumed it was a mockumentary like Spinal Tap. LOL.
Weird Al did a cover of this song, that's how I found sparks last Dec. I would love to see them perform together. The quirkiness would be off the chart!

Hey am doing the same thing. Wonder if the Documentary is seeable-
When I found out they were doing a documentary film I danced around like a god damn idiot, I am 55 years of age with a very bad heart and my kids were looking at me like they didn't know whether to call an ambulance or the people with padded jackets, so I showed them and If you had seen their faces. I don't care I loved them, they were different and I have always loved artists that push the boundaries in music, Toyah Wilcox and Hazel O'Connor were my idols with OMD coming in with Electricity and then someone introduced me to you guys I was in heaven. so excited to see this
How the hell have I gone my whole life without ever hearing of this band?!? I just watched Weird Al do an instrumental accordion cover of this song and I just had to know more. Then I find that this song is as old as I am... WTAF?!?! O_O I'm hooked! And now, I'm off to explore this intriguing new rabbit hole.
Watch the documentary and you will be blown.

Sparks : the band that inspired Queen. Miss you, Freddie. Gone, 30 years ago. But never forgotten. Thanks, Sparks.
Queen were there first. I think they were both plugged into the same source; a lot of bands were being inspired by each other. Lots of Glam Rock influence. And I see so much of Kate Bush in Russel's performances.
@@wingsandash Yes, perfectly true. The Sparks most obviously inspired Catherine Ringer and Frédéric Chichin from Les Rita Mitsouko.
@@wingsandash Nope, Sparks were there first
@@BrutalDread Both released debut albums in 1971. The Sparks' assemblages changed prior to the debut and over the years. None of the Queen core members are siblings, you can't bring that aspect into the equation. Stop being petty. I love them both to fucking death and thing they inspired each other and were inspired by others, as they should have been.
Sparks have been active since 1966, a whole 4 years before Queen were formed. I think it’s safe to say Queen were inspired by Sparks.

My favorite band in -74 when I was 14, together with Queen of course. Still are
Song is seriously driven by the thumping drums. Brilliant.
Yes. Sadly the drummer Norman "Dinky" Diamond committed suicide about 12 years ago following complaints about his next door neighbours playing deafening music in the early hours of the morning within his earshot. 😞
My first Sparks experience. Heard this on my cassette player aged 9.... through an earpiece. Fantastic in so many ways.... voice, instrumental variety and sound effects. Unsung Geniuses for sure. Great body of work over many many years... and STILL going strong... ( see some of Barrowlands live 2022).

Listening to this again after many years, at the time I just thought it rather weird, but on reflection, it's a remarkable, complex and accomplished song, tight playing and oddball time signatures, it's actually bordering on prog rock.
I had a neighbour who looked like the singer yrs yrs ago I used to call him sparks lol
I had a similar reaction, it’s one of rocks great overlooked masterpieces
I liked sparks since the 70s but never really listened to the lyrics😅but after watching the Netflix doc I had a right laugh they were hilarious but as a 12yr old didn't appreciate them🤣
You got there in the end, it's an incredible piece of work, it also never ages. Not one bit. Utterly glorious.

I was 17 ,1974 ,when this was a hit . Incredible song . Russ being 'mr cool' . Ron ? Straight faced . Great image
Sparks: original and unique music-making - genius.
I heard this on a new Apple iPad Air commercial recently and was thrilled to hear one of my all time favorite songs. Imagine my shock to see that it originally came out 48! years ago. It sounds like a song that could have been released just a couple of years ago. I was also pleasantly surprised a few years ago to learn that Ron and Russell Mael grew up in Culver City, California, where I grew up. I always thought they were British. The things ya learn on the internet! How did I get old enough to have a favorite song that was written 48 years ago? 😳
Truly the beginning of New Wave, a genre that integrated keyboards and guitars and vocals and sound effects in new and innovative ways and added hard right angles and unpredictable turns to pop music.
Nah it sounds more like an offspring of The Doors (Ray Manzarek’s keyboard is quite similar)
The Doors + Rush
I heard elements of cabaret in Queen and glam of Bowie in this.
Just listened to this again after many years, I my opinion Freddy and queen must have listened to this extensively before coming up with bohemian rhapsody. ..
Just putting it out there
Disagreed. Ron Mael in a 90s interview actually specified Get In The Swing as the track which Bo Rhap ripped off. But when I finally heard that song I thought the claim was ridiculous: it does have several different styles and a colossal Cecil B DeMille-scale production, but the main tune (for all the flash the song's structure is very conventional) is on the level of a crappy advertising jingle you'd hear on local radio.
Rubbish
As I have said before sparks are and always be a band on a style of their own. Nobody has been able to duplicate them. Like ELO. You can not reproduce their music. They have a style of their own. Nearly 50 years in the business. Keep going sparks love them.
@@JMoruzzi Maybe listening deeper you can tell similarities - of course not the main tune but changes is tempo and mood, I can see where they are coming from but probably not enough to create a court case but doesnt every band or singer/writer pick ideas from those before?....its a no brainer.
Brian May was actually offered a place in Sparks when he was in hospital during this period but he turned them down cos he didn't want to leave Queen.
unforgettable piece of genius.
Music from my teens that stayed with me, brilliant ❤

Ummm, what have I just heard? This is just incredible.
Glad you think so. They're also label mates with Sabrina Carpenter and The Last Dinner Party - the latter have done a cover of this song as well, go take a listen.
do read the lyrics to this . . . thought I knew the song well (I'm 50) but really had no idea just how clever, witty and funny the really song is.
ALWAYS look at the lyrics, when there is a Sparks song!! There are so many witty things and so easy to miss them.
Almost all lyrics can be found at allsparks.com/discography
If you don't know which album the song is from it's a little bit of hell, because you click at an album to have the songs.
Of course you can find the lyrics elsewhere, most songs, but I have noticed there can be minor, but very annoying, errors.
I was a young girl living in England when this came out. I was head over heels when I heard it. A lot of air play on Top of the Pops, I bought the 45 record. He was quite hot, LOL

It was very theatrical.
It was around my 9th birthday when this was a big hit in UK. It was the first time in my life that I had to stop whatever I was doing and turn the radio on when it was time for the weekly chart rundown.
Saw them in hard rock cafe los angeles 1984. Magic
Zoo time is she and you time
The mammals are your favourite type, and you want her tonight
Heartbeat, increasing heartbeat
You hear the thunder of stampeding rhinos, elephants and tacky tigers
This town ain't big enough for both of us
And it ain't me who's gonna leave
Flying, domestic flying
And when the stewardess is near do not show any fear
Heartbeat, increasing heartbeat
You are a khaki-coloured bombardier, it's Hiroshima that you're nearing
This town ain't big enough for both of us
And it ain't me who's gonna leave
Daily, except for Sunday
You dawdle in to the cafe where you meet her each day
Heartbeat, increasing heartbeat
As twenty cannibals have hold of you, they need their protein just like you do
This town ain't big enough for both of us
And it ain't me who's gonna leave
Shower, another shower
You've got to look your best for her and be clean everywhere
Heartbeat, increasing heartbeat
The rain is pouring on the foreign town, the bullets cannot cut you down
This town ain't big enough for both of us
And it ain't me who's gonna leave
Census, the latest census
There'll be more girls who live in town though not enough to go round
Heartbeat, increasing heartbeat
You know that: This town isn't big enough, not big enough for both of us
This town isn't big enough, not big enough for both of us
And I ain't gonna leave
