AHEAD of their time? Nobody has caught up yet
This #1 band of all the Time, I've listened to many bands like Rolling stones, the Beatles, led Zeppelin, Metallica, Queen and many more but non of them in the level of creativity and versatility like SPARKS ....... SPARKS is the greatest band of all time,, not all the people know that but at least all the people who know SPRKS know that.
I wouldn’t call them better than Queen or the Beatles but fucking hell Sparks makes great music
i know it. its a blatant fact to me.
This part of song all regards to Giorgio Moroder
Devo?
My Mum was a Sparks fan from the beginning, she adored them and they are a part of my childhood and now they're a huge part of my life like they were for her. We had this song at her funeral.
Love you always, Mum
Wow. Beautiful.
Thoughts are with you, Sarah. x
Think Mother Earth would be always a big thing 4 your mum...R.I.P....know your feelings....my mum passt away years ago....and never forgotten....hold your head up...
When I wrote my first comment three weeks ago, I had no idea my father would be gone from us a week later. He was the best dad till the end.
John I am so, so sorry to hear that. My thoughts are genuinely with you. I’m sure he was a brilliant person who was well loved and had a good life. ❤️
I'm 53 and never heard of them until today. What a great day!
Enjoy the trip you’re about to take!
me too!!! im 52 today is the first time and im in love!!!
Loved this since I saw it on top of the pops as a kid. These guys are great!!!!
I'm just recently discovering Sparks, and it's changed my life. I want to write more, learn instruments more, simply be more creative. I have a disease like MS and playing the guitar/piano can be incredibly frustrating, but seeing what music can be in Sparks makes me want to keep trying. Thank you.
Do not accept your limitations and keep trying. The outcome does not matter, just the process. You'll get there.
Ultimately you're only limited by your imagination and self-belief - there's a huge array of online recording & instrument/gear programmes that allow you to explore your creative ideas & lots of free advice sites to help you along the way.
All power to you - music is a healing force.
Some ways to get started with out worrying about strings or keys, is to try working with synths and sequencers. MPC Beats is a free program that is good to get started, and two modular synth programs that are lots of fun are VCVRack and Cherry Audio Voltage. The synths are a little obtuse at first look, but there are lots of tutorials on here that can get you started. Best of luck!
@@matthews4211 thanks!
Nice one! Go for it- and go good!
Ron makes me smile. As a child, he was one of my earliest enduring pop memories. One of the stand-outs on TOTP.
The blueprint for every synth duo that came after. Deadpan technology guy and soulful dramatic singer.
Pioneers
Pet shop who?
@@FromeFmAjayD Era sure.
Don't forget the band Suicide as well
The sound is typical for that period, but the video clip is tricky.

As someone who died while crossing the street I can confirm heaven is chock full of Ron Maels.
You deserve industrial amounts of beer, because of your comment and your username!! :)
Going shalalalala..nearly went shah shah a go go there; same year!
I went to hell and got Rick Astley
@@nathanaelsmith3553 Think you were Rick rolled🤣
Glorious
This is from 1979. That will never fail to amaze me
Same year as Japan's Quiet Life and two years after Donna Summer's I Feel Love.
Georgio was a busy man.
They essentially invented synthpop-new-wave-disco.
Wow!
That is amazing!
In the documentary, they said it was recorded in 1978, but it took a year to get a label to sign the record and released it in 1979. No. 1 Band of all time...at least IMHO :)
Oh yes ... Luv them ... inspired me to create a few original songs on YT ... thanks guys.
My mother passed away at 12:20 am this morning. Had decided not to attend the Hollywood Bowl tonight due to her illness, and now I have an absolute NEED to experience “The Number One Song In Heaven” live and alive, surrounded by Sparks fans. My mother would agree with this, has supported my love of music my entire life.
I want this and every other Sparks song played at my passing. It is the way.
I'm sorry for your loss
I'm with you. I lost my mother last year. We deal with grief however we can, and sometimes only music speaks to us, saying more than words ever can. I hope the music and not being alone helped.🙏
one of the most underrated bands ever , miles ahead of their time.
Not underrated by those with ears that actually work. Still musical icons to this day.
really underrated, not boomer comments like the ears that work
A-B-S-O-L-U-T-E-L-Y- ! Without Sparks and Roxy there’d not been a lot of the bands who also changed the face of music in the early 80’s.
Not underrated
Not underrated at all - very highly rated by everyone who knows their music and still going strong and innovating 50 years on
Ron's sense of humour was way above normal thinking people. Even nowadays he's laughing at the rest of the world. Long live Ron 🤴
AND he looks like a million bucks in this period !
He looks so cool 🤩
Let’s all stop for a moment and gather here together to appreciate the genius madness of The Sparks.
With Ron's song writing and keyboard skills, and Russell's unique singing voice . What a team . Absolutely magnificent performers.
They played in Sydney last week for the first time in 22 years.
They moved the crowd and there was a tear or two in my eyes.
They are very special.
the side eye that Ron throws at the camera is EPIC! I love this song and this video! They are ALWAYS about 5 steps of ahead of the rest of the music industry.
Ahead of their time, Sparks are still going strong and just as brilliant, left all the others standing. Well done guys🎉🎉
Saw them in Belfast on 11/04/22 and it was one of the greatest gigs I've ever been to in my life.
Better come to Glasgow
@@shadfaquir4873 they were there a few weeks ago!
@@KarlHamilton jeez never knew
@@shadfaquir4873 they'll be back on another 20 years 🤣
@@KarlHamilton NOT Funny 😀
Still that magical chemical fusion of a divine voice and magical instruments. They will never change.Let the Sparks swing.
Even at the age of 62, that intro is still stunning.
Hi john
Probably my fave band. I have a happy memory of them on TOTP in the 70s, my father come into the room, looked at them, clearly disgusted and said 'Son, the older one looks like he should be old enough to know better' and marched out. Brilliant!
Some of my best laughs are revisiting 1970s "TOTP" performances and remembering the comments members of my family made :)
Where iI lived in Ireland anyone who looked remotely technicolor was seen as "one of them" thankfully I had liberal parents and grew up bohemien always respectful of race and creed 😎👍 .....
My main goal as a keyboardist is to be able to stand perfectly still and look at the camera with a sexy straight face like "this song is fuckin wild, but I'm chill" while my hands go crazy
I grow up early 70's with Sparks. My two older brothers lost the interest after the both '74 Albums. Not Me. Since today.
I own every Album on 💿.
No 1 Song in Heaven, next week 45 Years Celebration. 🎉
Thanks brilliant German Producer Giorgio Moroder who brang Sparks back to the Charts.
(as a Swiss, sorry for my poor English)
Sparks - my heart pounding since 1971 ❤❤❤
Ron and Russell Mael are musical geniuses.
Is there any one in their 50's who remembers him looking creepy on TOTP and still thinking, bloody good music!!
Absolutely! But I never thought I'd get to work with them - on their video for this song!
@@merseymasala you serious mate?
@@johnm2631 Yes. I produced this video and La Dolce Vita.
@@merseymasala What a great job. Well done! 😊

I was today years old when I heard this and Edgar Wright's trailer for "The Sparks Brothers" led me here and I'm SO glad it did! This is amazing!
That's why I just showed up. They are amazing!! I can't believe I never heard of them before!
In additon to the Wright documentary, there is a new Leos Carax film starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard that is a musical and is entirely comprised of Sparks songs. I believe that one comes out two months after the documentary. It's titled, "Annette." I've been anticipating that one for a couple years now; was originally supposed to release toward the end of 2020.
Seriously how have I not heard of this band?
“Don’t let it get ya don’t let it get ya eaten by the monster of love!” Now go watch Valley Girl. ⚡️ ⚡️ Sparks
I just found out about them today and better for it.
Number 1 all over heaven but peaked at 14 in the UK. It really deserved better - this song is a corker in my book!
One of the most original and fantastic music tracks of all time. I feel very privileged to share the same era of Sparks
Wow! this could perfectly be one of those amazing new wave bands from Sheffield in 1984. Totally ahead of their time!! Thank you Steve Lamacq!!
Sparks were years ahead with their music.
Thanks guys.
This song is so heavenly beautiful
I never tire of hearing it
The synths are just so magical.
CRIMINALLY under-rated then and now.......
I'd long forgotten about this song. Genius.
They're your favorite band's favorite band
I'm still listening......
When this was released, I found it deeply thrilling to see people unashamedly playing synths. This was the future! Wooh! And here in 2023... it's still a thrill.
If a band can stand against the test of time and there music it is SPARKS gauranteed amazing band
I’m Italian, never heard of them before, but NOW i’m THE BIGGEST FAN! ❤️💫✨ Totally Genius!
appena visto il trailer del documentario di Edgar Wright, che bomba, non li conoscevo!
@@SalvatoreCastellana cosa ci siamo persi per anni!!! Meravigliosi, unici ❤️✨
You might also enjoy The Tubes and Electric Six.
Gotta love Goirgio Moroder's production work on this
he was the producer
+Tacos Varios That's totally a Moroder bassline.
Thank You for bringing that to my attention. Thank You Coast To Coast / Art Bell. This is beautiful.
yeS!!
It's magnificent. 👍
The most unique band of all time. Innovators. Period .
You can't be the "most" unique because it's an absolute not a relative term. It means one of a kind. You're either one of a kind or you're not. You can't be more or less one of a kind. That would be like someone being more 6ft tall than another person who is 6ft tall.
@@VelvetMetrolink There are quite a few bands that are one of a kind in their genre but Sparks defy all genres
this song was result of collaboration between Giorgio Moroder and Sparks (as well as 'Tallent Is An Asset')
In 1981 our band had a Moog synth and it was brilliant. Loved Beat the Clock too. Brilliant and quirky.
This is beyond genius, in fact its beyond being beyond genius, I think...
Played this as a DJ in the 70's, loved it then but even more today. Few understood Sparks, their loss.
I am 48. For 47 fucking years Sparks was not in my life and today I have found them. Did my life have meaning before today?
Wow.... This is the No 1 Song ever!! Absolute legends.
i discovered this song a few months ago and.... wow... it's climbing into my list of all-time favorite songs with a bullet.
I interviewed these on my radio show on Rock FM in the North West in the 1990's. This is a great song & should be played 'LOUD'.
Hi Rob,What a great gig.Is it true that Ron Mael comes across as one of the nicest guys you could ever hope to meet?
Russel however I would imagine would be an interviewers dream.
jonkheere1 They were both more or less the same. I think Russell was just playing apart in video's & on TV. I must have the interview some where on Reel to Reel.
Thanks for the insight Rob,The reason I asked the question about Ron was from hearing from various sources that he was very approachable.
However as the Brothers were "Showbiz people,it may be down to the fact that it was part of their act.
However I wonder how many of today's youngsters know what a reel to reel is?
Being of a certain vintage,It brought back a lot of memories. Thanks mate and may I wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas.
jonkheere1 I agree!
Playing loud right now!!
Sparks ahead of their time again !
+Keith Bate I'd say they've always been smart choosing producers to work with.
In the times of Ultravox and Erasure this would have been a huge hit
I get very emotional how wonderful they are. I love them. This tune upsets me for some reason. They’re brilliant.
What you said there is the exact same thing i feel about Buggles Video Killed the Radio Star!!
I love the way Russell dances in and out of rhythm in this video and his vocals are sublime, but my heart belongs to Ron.
Liked their music since the 70's.
Ron’s got it all going on
i’m actually a fan of Franz Ferdinand, and came across Sparks from the FFS collaboration. I (or my parents) weren’t actually alive when this song was released, but I really enjoy this song and will listen to more of Sparks’ music, even though this isn’t what i’d normally go for. I do like really A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip so I’ve came back to this and starting my way through a very big collection!!
I love this track. Brings back memories of secondary school, playing it constantly after I had bought the album. I just love Sparks.
Sparks meets Goirgio, and one of their best albums is made.
Their music and sound are as fresh now as then I've aged 40 years they haven't love them
Had the LP in 1979. Missed this heavenly song for years. Could not remember name of group or title. Spent days browsing synth pop from late 70s. No success. Then I one day listened to Diana Ross. The synth was most likely made by same person. Moroder from the border region of Austria / Italy. Knowing this much it still took me a day to browse all his contributions to other artist. Finally I succeeded. Happy. This song stands out. Strangely not famous. Maybe like wine. Gets better with time.
Sparks is one of those bands that has a strong fan base, and are known to and being a source of inspiration to other bands and musicians. But of some reason I can't understand not well known, or not known at all to common people. Except for their fans, many since the early seventies.
"Those Mysteries"🤔, as another Sparks song is called.
(About a small kid asking his dad all kind of things, but his dad answers "Go ask your mom, or just go away". "I don't even know what I don't even know" Russell sings. Clever line 😁.)
The most iconic Synth band of all time.
Ron is so under rated as a Producer/Keyboardist/Programmer. When you consider where they've been and where music followed, he's as influential to electronic music as Giorgio Moroder any day! Plus he's the funny/quite one. Ringo & George in one!
Ringo and George in one, oh, I adore that! How very true.
Well it was Moroder who produced this :-)
Ron wrote all of the songs
Er, I think you need to know that it was Giorgio Moroder who produced this. That's why it sounds like it does - it's his trademark sound.
@@Stig10001 yep, I always find amazing tunes and find out moroder produced them
"If you should die before you awake"?
Such happy lyrics.
Every song from this point on owes these guys a credit.
We would go to Six flags Magic Mountain in California to see sparks perform on the regular. Ron & Russel Mael are Genius!!! Great time to be a kid!!!
I'm glad I discovered Sparks. It inspired me to get back into my synth music
Sparks are one of the most amazing bands out there
Been going since the 70s. Awsome. Show me another band like them. You çant.
I forgot this even existed. Brilliant to come across this again.
Way ahead of their time..... just a genius band!!!
I remember watching these guys on Top of the pops with my late brother when i was a kid. They still sound as good today as they did back then....Happy days....
Bless you losing your brother.
Was your brother able to confirm this?
Sparks=JOY!
Turns out this song was on top of the charts for a very long time in heaven
I have all their albums. 2nd favourite group to pink Floyd. Their music and Russell's singing has been great. Watching when do I get to sing my way. Quality. Long live sparks. Underrated but all there concerts are packed even now. Speaks for it's self. Brilliant.
This track along with Are "Friends"" Electric? got me into electronic music.... Happy days

I was young back then
God yeah.
I am totally synthed out with this beauty! Sounds better than ever. Thank you Sparks.
As a 61 year old Englishman from Peckham in S.E.London i vividly remember goin to see SPARKS play a gig in South London at the fairfield hall in Croydon in deepest South London in 1973...i was 11 years old and my older bruv Baz (Barry) was 14 and we saw them on a sunday night in the middle of summer...what an absolute BLINDIN gig that was cos they made it big in England first cos of their chart hit "this town ain't big" etc...we went on our own and it was a PROPER rock crowd there to see rhem eg=certain "herbal cigarettes" we were offered to drag on and then pass on to the next person (and me being the idiot i was and still am...hahahaha) had a few drags on it and passed it on but Baz POLITELY declined the offer so thank god they did "this town etc" at the start of their set so i got to see it but don't remember much else of the night and Baz being the "top geezer" bruv. that he was helped me home after the gig hahaha...the 2 bruvs in the band and the others in sparks were BRILLIANT that night (what i saw of them as i explained earlier) and i THINK they're STILL gigging NOW! if so,please go and see them they're EXCELLENT! peace and luv to ya,all the best from Piers A.K.A. So many people loved Sparks and still do to this day. Great tunes. I always loved Ron. Great guys.
God how i love you- since the 80s
FFS brought me here. This band is incredible!
+Jamie Daly Well... FFS!
Jamie Daly FFS means Franz Ferdinand Sparks. Sparks are in that band.
how can anyone not possibly like ron and russ here??
Sparks are the shit (and I mean that in the best way possible) been a fan since 74 and here I am in 2021 and they are still bringing out great music. I do prefer the longer version of this song, but hey ho, this will do.
if you're wondering why you're hearing this song, you may be closer to here than you think you'd be, you may be closer to here than you care to be, it's the number one song in heaven.
What a band, what a song. Talent, talent and more talent.
I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Alan Partridge, Alpha Papa:-) enjoyed it.
saw it last night , insidiously clever
A truly great band.
A good beat's a good beat.

He's your dad?
I remember as a child hearing this on s TV show....my god it made me sit up and pay attention...incredible
One of the most innovative groups ever!
This one is a gem, some credit has to go to Mr Giogio Moroder for his contribution!
I remember buying this 7 inch single in the summer of 1979, absolutely loved it, played it all the time on my record player! I was fifteen years old. 💞
Snap! 😁 Happy days 💓

There were two art rock bands I absolutely adored in this era - Split Enz (Neil Finn's first band) and Sparks - and as far as I know there were mooted double bills of the two bands playing together but I don't know if it ever happened. Would love to see the Finn brothers team up with the Mael brothers, That would be epic, and there's till time!
Won't happen unless they're all recruited into Fleetwood Mac.

Superb electronica. Just goes round and round your head and breaks up in millions of ways.
So damn good!!! Glad I got to see them live, in Cleveland, back in the day. Dressed up as bride and groom!! The crowd went wild!!

I BLOODY LOVE SPARKS!!! Woohoo xxx
I seem to find myself playing this song every day because it puts me in a good mood.
Soon I will be able to hear it without needing to play it and then I will be always happy forever
Ron is full of sheer joy @ 1:49 , he should calm himself after that outburst of glee! 💗
I worked in commercial radio from 1972 to 1990 and remember Sparks back in 1975. I was working at this tiny station in the Barre-Montpelier market and played a few of their songs. My boss didn't like their sound, but I convinced him it was the new thing. He never said another word about them. Their sound was way ahead of it's time.
Love this Album the Best!!
Sparks was my first ever concert - 1975 Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. I was 14! 🤩
This album was my first introduction to Sparks, and it's ace. It was a collaboration with fellow legend Giorgio Moroder - a match made in heaven (ho ho!).
Ron and Russell are just about to tour the UK....Gents we await your genius with eager anticipation with the first show in Oxford on 17/05/23
Should be a brilliant experience...
Never heard of till last week. They played this song on and I thought its catchy. Seem ahead of its time for the time it came out.
