- I captured this clip 11 years ago on VHS tape, treasured it, and saved it all these years. Now I have decided to share it with the world. What I especially like about my capture is that it is NOT cut short at the end. I hope you enjoy it.

@@JimmyGinjaNinja Not hating one bit. There are two really easy clues. First, at 2:36, listen to the studio-mixed fade at the end of "free-yeah...". Second, at 2:52 when she's done "singing", she screams "woooh!" and amazingly it doesn't make it through through the stadium speakers. The mic was never live.
I say this all the time- Faith Hill's rendition is the most underrated of all time. People talk about Beyonce, Mariah, Jennifer Hudson, Lady Gaga, etc... in the ongoing debate about the top 10, and they all did fantastic jobs, but Faith Hill is definitely in that top 10 somewhere, if not the top 5

Honestly, one of the best vocals I've ever heard on this song. Every pitch was dead on, her tone was supported and resonant, and phrasing was very lyrical. And can we talk about the way she mixes that high note on "land of the free"? I'm shook... it's so strong but so effortless.

+Bass Mainer Star Sprangled Banner really is a difficult song to sing but it isn't like some of the biggest songs in the world that it seemed impossible to nail it perfectly live. There are singers who can slay this live and anytime that they want. Whitney prerecorded her rendition probably because her voice was too exhausted after days of practicing or simply because she's afraid of screwing up (we all know how damaging it would be when you messed up singing national anthems on occasions like this right 😂)

Faith added a bit at the end which I enjoyed. It's musically, a difficult song to sing, to begin with, and many of today's folks, in their zeal to " make it better" mess it up. Some don't even know the words. Than you for your complement to our nation. We seem to need all the help we can get these days.

the reaction of the little girl at 2:56 is so precious. She is so in awe and looking at Faith in such a loving way. You can tell Faith was her hero.
I like Whitney's versions, but like other comments on here, this is what really touched me. In the end, I have to say that this is the BEST version out there. Everything was perfect, how they had the band and how they cut to Faith Hill's face. Also, I think it is how she slows things down and build it up throughout the song that really gets you, especially the part where she slows down and build up to "and the rockets red glare" - just amazing and beautiful. The whole song had great transitions. I think other singers always shorten certain notes and it doesn't sound as smooth as this. Listening to this feels like you are flying and gliding through the air...if you know what I mean. I just love Faith Hill and she looks so graceful singing it.
+LBlush -- Technically, musically, this IS a good rendition, right up there with Whitney and Jennifer Hudson. But for pure, raw EMOTIONAL CONTENT, I have yet to find one that matches Lilian Garcia's work on the 9/13//01 episode of WWE Smackdown.

Okay, went right to it -- YEP, BETTER THAN WHITNEY, and a tiny step above Lilian's, just based on musical precision. But there was a spark of emotion that was slightly less in LeeAnn's version, just IMO.
Many have sung the song beautifully but the simplicity and clarity of this version makes me like it the best. This is how you should sing the National Anthem. You dont over innovate on it, you respect it.

The e sound in free is very hard to belt without cracking. Your drives have to be open and unmoving to belt but yet you have close your mouth and lessen the space needed for belting when pronouncing the e
Same here. 10/11 years. The free part with that 'and' attachment was a brilliant move that sets it apart actually improving on the song. Makes other renditions sound dull.

As a HUGE whitney houston fan I saw this and always thought next to Whitney's it was the best live version ever. both whitney and Faith "understood the moment", it was not about them, they made it about country, flag, and troops. Example look what Faith has on? Not an oscar gown but a simble outfit, and look at her excitment afterwards its so genuine. Who ever did the arrangment should be credited as well

Thanks so much for sharing this Tom. Anyone who thinks Faith Hill is just a pretty face couldn't be more wrong. Personally I think she is one of the greatest singers of all time because of her voice, range, and effortless transitions. I have always said there is no song written she can't sing, no note she can't reach, and no transition she can't make smoothly. Singing the National Anthem, as only she can, couldn't be a better tribute to her and our great country.
Through the years, this is the one I keep coming back to. Stunning, Faith meant it.

I'm surprised at the haters here - really ??? Faith Hill has an extraordinary voice and she to the best of my knowledge IS singing live. She's a fantastic mother, wife ,singer, and seems to be a really kind woman. While Whitney Houston had an amazing voice for a period of time her recording of the National Anthem was NOT live. She sadly lost her self and destroyed her vocal gifts with her choices. Many have sung this song and have made it their own - remember Cher's version? Lets celebrate all who have done this song with heart and feeling.

No question about it, its amazing and brilliant by Faith Hill and such a great voice but Whitney Houston in my humble opinion, was better and brought the entire Nation together at that particular time in History when the USA UNDER H.W Bush was to get Irak out of Kuwait.
This is my all-time favorite performance of the Star Spangled Banner. Whitney was great, too, but I like this one better. I still get chills listening to it. I love the arrangement too. Its just a personal preference.

Possibly the best version of Star Spangled Banner. So moving, powerful and beautiful.
Whitney and Faith gives the best US national anthem performance EVER in history.
As a total package, this was and still is the best. Great setting and appropriate music. A serious rendition by a beautiful voice, without unnecessary vocal plays. Base drum at 1:50 and shooting fireworks at 1:58 were well timed and the inclusion of signed language was inclusive and meaningful.
I honestly think she is one of the best.

Thank you for posting this... my son was in the signing choir @ the front, and I had forgotten that he did this (all of the kids in the signing choir were amazing, along with Faith Hill!)... my son was killed by a drunk driver 5 years ago, 2 weeks after graduating summa cum laude from Georgia Tech, and it was a delight to see this again... it would be even better in HD!! Thanks again...

You have shared something very special with the world indeed by showing the extended version of this song. The young girl in the Closed Caption box that was doing the sign language for the hearing impaired at the end of the song was so special. It brought tears to my eyes when you see her look at Faith Hill with pride and love for what she had just done. Amazing!

I’m enamoured with Faith - think she’s the most beautiful female on earth; but the honour for greatest definitely goes to Whitney. It’s almost a tie; but Houston’s version is to the NFL’s Big Game what Faith’s was to the SNF intro.
