- Among the annals of national anthems as a prelude to sporting events, few have topped the one delivered by Whitney Houston before Super Bowl XXV in 1991 in Tampa, Florida. A woman, her incredible voice, and the bare minimum of extraneous notes. Her rendition came at a particularly patriotic time, just after the onset of the Persian Gulf War, and was released as a single. It was re-released after the September 11th terrorist attacks. Houston donated all proceeds to charity. She ranks among the best of all-time because of the circumstances and ... that voice..

@C 1922 This song was written as it is for a reason. People want to sing along to it. Whitney didnt add anything over the top extra. She didnt make it into an r&b or make it into a vocal show off. She didnt try to change the melody and it was a very smart move. No wonder it is the only version which made the charts and is not only mostly viewed on youtube and is by far considered the best version of the anthem. Thats go show what people want! artists sing to the people and have to think about the people and not about how well they can do the runs and how can I change it up so I can show of my vocals and use the most watched tv broadcast to their advantage.

But what we heard was still done in one take and doesn’t take away from the fact it’s still the best version in the history of the super bowl.

I watch the Star Spangled Banner right before 4 AM on Pix 11 NY right before the morning news and there was a female named Sheridan Gates with long red/brown hair singing it this morning and she did that freeeEEEEEE like Whitney did. I live in eastern PA and we get Philly and NY stations on our cable TV. I had this on VHS tape that was recorded by my late grandfather, my late mom's father who passed in Dec 2000 at his home from colon cancer. His wife passed Jan 2006 from melanoma in the hospice unit at the hospital, they got a Panasonic VCR around 1990 and I now have it. Not sure where the tape is. My mom passed June 14, 2022 in the hospital because her lungs were bad.

I was in a Sports Bar in SoCal to watch this game and I will never forget the effect her song had on the many many people who were there! We all cried like babies!

The under 30 crowd was not around when the REAL singers were singing, so their basis of comparison is pretty poor.
Mcbrion1951 just because somebody is under 30 does not mean that we were not around for real singers. Luciano Pavarotti is one of the greatest singers of all time and i was around for him and Josh Groban Who has the best male Voice of the 21st century sang the song just as well as Whitney even though she did a phenomenal job. Just because you are older doesn't mean you no more about music either.

I should have qualified that the people under 30 have not yet discovered music from the forties and fifties. and you're right just because somebody is older doesn't mean they know more about music. however, in my case I was a singer in a band so I do know more about music, although I appreciate and honor that you were absolutely correct that age is no indicator of having more knowledge. I think we can see that in the way our older leaders how are running the country! And most of them are around my age. So you're absolutely right and I shouldn't have generalized. So if you tell me, Stapleton’s version is only 2nd best after hers. The iconic and successful of Whitney’s version beat any other version. After 9/11, I heard this as an eight year old and her voice was so strong and powerful it made me feel like our country was going to be ok. Every time I listen to her sing this it makes me cry tears of hope and love for my country. There will never be another like her. RIP Whitney.
