  • Suunto has just announced their newest watch, the Suunto Race. Here's everything you need to know about it!
Buy the Suunto Race: amzn.to/3RLSlpP (link helps support the channel, thanks!!!)
This watch essentially takes the existing Suunto Vertical endurance-sports focused watch that was released this past spring, and gives it an AMOLED display. Alongside that, it gets an updated user interface and a number of new software features (which will also be ported back to a number of other existing Suunto watches). Oh - and for arguably the first time in recent memory, Suunto has absolutely slaughtered the competition on price here. The base unit is priced at just $449, including a sapphire crystal display and stainless steel case.
So, here’s what’s on the Suunto Race:
    - New 1.43” AMOLED touch screen, 466x466px at 1,000 nits
    - GPS battery life time starting at 40hrs in multiband/dual-frequency (and up to 120 hours in ‘Tour’ mode).
    - Standby/smartwatch battery life of 12 days in gesture-based display mode, or 7 days in always-on display mode
    - Adds digital crown
    - Adds new nightly HRV tracking, as well as HRV trending features
    - Adds Suunto Coach integration with aforementioned HRV tracking (will give guidance inclusive of HRV changes)
    - Adds workout planner to the watch itself (plus mobile app and TrainingPeaks)
    - Adds Training widget/watch face with TSB/CTLHRV
    - Adds new daily companion, new daily widgets, new mini widgets
    - Adds sleep stages shown on-watch
    - Adds ability to do multiple alarms (e.g. wake-up alarms)
    - Adds ‘Find my Phone’ functionality
    - Adds ‘Stand-up’ reminder
    - Adds ‘Progress’ running race estimates & HR run threshold
    - Adds new sport mode…umm…Rope Skipping
    - Adds customization of the widgets
    - Adds do-not-disturb mode
    - Improved music control touch controls (for controlling phone music
    - First Suunto watch using fully in-house algorithms, transitioned away from FirstBeat algorithms
    - Retains existing snorkeling depth gauge features, with existing 100m
    - 22mm industry standard strap (silicon strap included in the box)
    - Retains/has military durability specifications
    - Two model options: Titanium ($449/EUR) or Stainless steel ($549/EUR)
    - Sapphire crystal display on both models
    - Weight comes in at a claimed 69g for titanium, and 84g for stainless steel

This is crazy man. Forever & a day ago I loved the Suunto 7 for look/design/feel/screen, but it was a piece of sh*t for battery life and heart rate accuracy - this (bc connects to chest strap) fixes all that and adds all the latest expected features, and honestly might bump the ever-present Garmin from my wrist! Absolutely insane. Can't wait to get my hands on one.

I currently use the Fenix 7 Sapphire Solar and I do love the very extended battery life on the non-amoled display, and the high number of data fields available directly on the main screen, but if I were to buy a new watch today I would definitely be looking at this new Suunto if nothing else because of the sapphire glass. 1. Suddenly no claims regarding sustainability.

I would suggest that people be advised that Suunto is taking orders for the Race titanium and collecting payment and is not shipping watches yet and is not saying what the holdup is. Zero communication from Suunto. Not a good situation. Also, they won’t let you cancel your order even though it hasn’t shipped and they won’t tell you when it will ship. And good luck getting through to customer service.

Has Suunto sorted its App / web site ecosystem. One of the reasons I left Suunto was its mishandled migration of App system. They closed a good, if slightly tired looking web site, to a new system which lost far too many features. It's good to see Suunto catching up, though, I don't like its three button interface. Polar's flow app / web site is probably worth the extra cost.

Hardware & price wise this new Suunto looks amazing. I just wonder if it's too late for many of us long time gps watch users? Even though $150 is a massive price delta, I know I wouldn't switch from Garmin at this point. I have over a decade of data on Garmin's platform. I like Connect. The features are amazing, and I'm just use to it. It's sorta like Apple's ecosystem lock-in. I'm here & I'm not moving. But I think Suunto's new direction will def. appeal to brand NEW customers looking for their 1st endurance/sport watch.

Yeah I can see how using a 3rd party platform gives you the freedom to move around. I just don't use Strava cause I was one of those old school DailyMile users. When that platform vanished I lost data. So I'm 1st party now. Also, I'm just WAY more privacy/security conscious now, so Strava is a big no for Me. @@peakproofuk

Looks like a great watch! I wish it was made in Finland like their other watches. I’m getting tired of everything being made in China.

Looks like a solid piece of kit. I am currently the proud owner of a Suunto Spartan Ultra, a tracker that works well and I love it but it doesn’t read v02 max. And it requires a separate chest strap for heart rate monitoring. Maybe it’s time to upgrade?

Did you have a chance to check accuracy on mermaiding, freediving depth wise? Does the watch have an option to automatically start and stop the timer once underwater? Does it have recommended recovery interval timer before next dive?
I understand it shows depth to 10m, what happens with the depth meter after being deeper than 10m? Is it OK to dive deeper with it? Do you think this Amoled display will last shorter than Vertical display, supposedly Amoled has shorter life span (4-5years) than LED and burns out quicker. What do you think?
    Thanks

I would like to know if they added a countdown before repetitions in the intervals mode. It's now possibile to set the distance of repetions to OPEN? Thank you very much

Let's hope the other hardware improvement here is the charging connector. It is an absolute pile of junk on the Vertical, and £45 for a replacement!
So is the choice now between Vertical and Race the option for solar (Vertical Titanium Solar) and longer battery life vs. AMOLED (Race) ?

How is the altitude measuring on these new watches? It used to be terrible in the past and for trailrunning that is a bit of a showstopper.
And can you use music streaming services? Because Garmin Coros and Suunto all look a lot a like these days.
