Des, you did a phenomenal job with the video. Answered every question I had. =] Thanks! Looks like a great watch from Suunto!
Glad to help. Thanks!
Nice case design.
The lugs are designed well to drop down immediately to help people with smaller wrist to wear better.
Hi Des! Here from Italy! I was a Suunto user with the Spartan Ultra, a massive sportwatch. Now im using Coros Apex pro so i know and i use yet the Digital Crown. This Suunto Race seems amazing and the price very good. Can’t wait for your (and dc r) final wrap up! I’m afraid of the “early aging” of This amoled watch, don’t you? Thanks, great video!
This is a really great product at a solid price point! Glad to see Suunto being highly competitive
I had to triple confirm the price. Great to see some solid offerings at this price point.
I couldn't handle the lag in the interface and all the function who just seem to function less then on a real garmin. I would any day pay 30% more just to get a solid, durable and more polished product.
@@vpnconsultSame.. I appreciate Suunto's effort here, but especially the UI is so laggy
Wow! That came from out of nowhere! Kudos to Suunto, looks like they're turning the corner and is coming out of the woods! Looking forward to what they have in store to replace the Suunto 5 and 7..
I guess theres gonna be 3 main lines - Peak, Race and Vertical. Or even maybe just the Race (horizontal) and Vertical ;)
Good to see a Sunnto comeback! I would actually give it a try but I am to deep in the Garmin environment!!
Thank you for the comparison and details
Sure thing!
SUUNTO IS BACK ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
Great video Des. Loaded with details. First time viewer and instant subscribe. 👍
Thanks so much!
FINALLY a Suunto watch that is relevant.
Thanks for another great video. Am so glad to see Suunto back in the game!
Very welcome 👍
I love that big step up by suunto. Also great that its made in Finland
It’s made in China. The Vertical is made in Finland.
Thank you. I would like to see a side by side with the Garmin Forerunner 965 as size and price are more similar than the Epix.
Thank you for the review, Des! Do you know if this watch have a nap tracking?
interface looks clean
So excited about this watch..
Hope all is well, Paul!
@@DesFitdefinitely.. especially now we are seeing Suunto up their game.. as a brand I love their sustainability values
Awesome & Thanks :)
👍
finally, watch with amoled, bravo Suunto
Great review.
Thanks!
Thanks, Des. The good thing about Suunto is that they offer 2 years of warranty whereas Garmin offers only 1 year.
Thanks for that great introduction Des. Looks like a win for Suunto. Coming from Coros, I like the scroll wheel. One question about that wheel. I wear my watch on my right arm, and Coros let’s me flip the watch for easier wheel access. Can you flip the watch for left or right handed wear? I can’t do that on my 9 peak pro. Thanks again-look forward to your deep dive.
It doesn't appear to have that customization unfortunately. Thanks again for tuning in!
Hi Des, can you do side by side review between Suunto Race and FR965 ? Great videos always with info ❤ keep it up.
I’ll see what I can do!
Nah , the VErtical is bright enough indoor but the rotational crown is something new . Thumbs up Suunto .
Thank you for the great review des! What would you recommend? Fr 965 or this suunto race? Im stock between this two
Thanks Does
👍
Nice review as always..how are the notifications for apps and messages from the phone..can you see the phone ring on the watch?
Wow! Didn't see that new one coming :O :D
👀
Agreed. Now seriously considering switching from Polar GritX Pro.
I think price point has been achieved as these are made in China and not Finland like the rest of the range. Great review, thank you.
Awesome video Des! I can't wait to try out the race, the screen looks great! The shortcut feature looks useful too, for accessing the flashlight etc 🌟
It’s a pretty big leap for Suunto for sure. Thanks!!
A pleasure! 👊🏼@@DesFit
Thanks Des can you tell me if the listed weight includes the strap or is the watch case only
Everyone is getting into amoled now, Des. One idea would be a Forerunner 965 vs Vantage V3 vs Race comparison as they are all in the same price range!
I'll see what I can do. Thanks John and hope all is well!
I’m very interested in a comparison between these watches. I’ve been using the Garmin ecosystem forever, but the idea of getting a higher build quality at an affordable price is very attractive.
Which tool do you use for the tcx gpx comparison when you compare the watches?
Today I tested a Fitbit together with my Vantage M.
Very helpful all of your presentation, can you give more information about swimming pool widget what rate ?
Can you please give us information about how good the Suunto race is going with vo2max estimation having in mind that the previous Suunto products were way too off.
@DesFit have you bench marked the "save" process for activities (run, cycle, etc)? Approximately how long does the "Save" take to complete? Thank you.
Would you recommend this watch over Garmin Vivoactive 5? I would consider Venu 3 but it is over 500€ where I live and I am looking for sport watch under 450€. As a gym-goer I am mostly interested in recovery, HRV, stress and sleep tracking. I am not very interested in ”smart watch” features
I Just buy new vertikal yesterday.. today release new watch from suunto. Hurmmm. If i know i wait for race.
Have they mentioned about fixing the software to make navigation through widgets more smooth and less laggy?
When i heard and saw Suunto headphones few weeks ago, i thought they are releasing soon watch with option to load music on it but they heavent. So not sure what is behind this headphones
How is the Suunto ecosystem? Does it beat Coros? I really like the training plans for Coros. But this watch looks tempting.
Is the back of the watch stainless steel or is it plastic like a Garmin 965? Can you adjust the font size for notifications? In the past with Suunto I have had issues being able to read the notifications because of my old eyes and the font size they use. How about watch faces? In the past they have been very limited in choices? Thanks for the review
Could you do a vertical video with the new update. My understanding is that it's now closer to the race interface
Can you connect it to a Smart Trainer, bike, rower etc?
Hello, which one would you choose for TRAIL running , GARMIN 965 or SUUNTO RACE, taking into account that only Garmin has routable maps?
Does the flashlight shutoff automatically like the Vertical or will it stay ON until the user turns it OFF?
What smart watch do you recommend for fitness training, health status verification and mostly for HRV monitoring? Polar Vantage V3, or Suunto Race, or Garmin Venu 3? Thanks!
Does this watch have onboard storage for mp3 files to play offline, and able to play through its speaker? also does the map display show street names and does it have a jump rope mode?
Regarding coordinates - is WGS 84 an option in both Vertical and Race model?
my garmin 245M is working fine so far but I'm wondering whether should I upgrade to 265 or switch to Suunto race, any advice for those who used Suunto watch before? I'm more towards running not triathlon fyi
This seems to be a real breakthrough ! Hopefully, together with the new Polar V3, it will force Garmin to lower the premium prices that are out of control in the latest years.
Competitors with high level products at affordable prices definetely benefit the consumers' wallets...
Garmin suck because they never add new features on their previous devices u always have to buy the new one contrary to Coros & Suunto it’s a joke lol 😂
@thomasfournier9925 not quite true www.garmin.com/en-US/newsroom/press-release/wearables-health/free-feature-updates-are-available-now-on-select-garmin-smartwatches-and-cycling-computers/
@@DesFit yes maybe but Garmin watches are about 2x expensive compared to Suunto & Coros ;)
They also come with more features
@@DesFit that basically no one uses...at least from my experience...
How does it compare to suunto 9 peak pro? Was looking for suunto 9 peak pro for a while. It is slightly cheaper and i also like it is smaller. I dont care about amoled display. What do you think is better option right now and why?
So happy to see Suunto back in the game. The watch materials are perfect, sapphire and titanium for that price. But still the laggy UI...😢 Also the OS does not seem to be so complex as on Apple watch and Garmin. (Give us Suunto race with Garmin OS for that price and people would buy it immediatelly 😇)
I just got the race, can tell race ui not laggy at all, but the peak and horizontal ui horrible laggy :(
Does suunto ecosystem has a web page to see all my activities on my laptop like garmin connect or polarity flow?
Great video. Is there a left/right hand setting. I.e. the screen flips?
Thanks! But unfortunately not.
Hi, great vid! Is it possible to plan a route on phone/laptop and follow it on the watch while running? Thanks.
This is possible with every other Suunto, so it should be possible for the Race as well.
Is the HR sensor covered by a plastic or a glass lens?
Does it have ECG capability? (even if without FDA approval)
Really curious about the in depth comparison from Suunto Race to F265 ! cuz they got such similar Pricepoint.
I'll see what I can do!
@@DesFit I can't wait to see your in-depth review. Could you please finish that 2-week in-depth review with 2 days? :D
Intrigued that this may be might journey back to Suunto from Garmin. I left Suunto after the Ambit3, which I loved, but when it came time to replace that, Suunto seemed to be stumbling with product and app development. I'm torn between this and the Vertical...as with most folks on here who follow Des, I love a number of outdoor activities including mountaineering, trail running and cycling among others...so should I look more towards the Vertical, or this one? I'm not talking Denali trips (at least not now), just East Coast, 2-3 day types of trips. Might the Race do ok for me?
The Verticais should be superior in mountaineering functions and general built, plus that for 2-3 days trips, it excels in battery life (it also have a Solar option). The screen is highly visible in daylight, so the Race actually has no advantage in front of it for outdoor sports.
I have 9 Peak, so I only talk after seeing some reviews of the two. I will be going for a Vertical after my Peak.
Do You think it's a good watch for Triathlon?
Hello, how is the heart rate and GPS accuracy?
Great video. Will you review Polar Vantage V3? I am #teampolar
Hi @DesFit, which smartwatch/sportwatch would you recommend in terms of HR accuracy? Everything but apple/garmin :D
The Pixel Watch or Pixel Watch 2, other than Garmin and Apple
@@DesFit Many thanks! Just bought the Pixel Watch 2, looking forward for your complete review ;)
Can you pair Suunto chest Belt with race? I have Still Suunto spartan and using spartan navigation on bike tube, dont want to lose HR info
You can pair with external bluetooth HR sensors
how nicely does Suunto play with iOS and Garmin bike-computers/peripherals?
When it comes to iOS everything works just like on Android. There are no missing features. Regarding your second question, 🤷♂️ idk.
can u reverse it so crown is on other side like an apple watch or coros watch? im left handed and cant reach crown the way it is currently set up
Currently it doesn't have that option
How about the crown, do you accidently Press or scroll it during an activity? This was my biggest problem with Coros Vertical 2 and Apex 2 Pro when i used to use them
Nope, no accidental presses or scrolls (an issue for me as well on COROS watches). The button press is much stiffer on the Race.
@@DesFit thanks for the reply. Sounds good about the crown. I just bought the Vertical Solar 1 month ago, and feeling abit in doubt if i want to up/downgrade to the Race🤔
Does this watch need me to pay for Training Peak subscription in order to get all recovery data? How does recovery features compare to Polar otherwise?
No need for any additional subscription to get recovery data
not gonna lie for 449€ looks great.
what about the lifespan of amoled display?
Strava live segments?
What happened on brand Finland?? I see china brand near taiwan (garmin) rip finland brand😅
No wireless charging?
Looks best compared to all ... bad HR sensor = bad metrics = bad sports watch. No way to go around this, whats the point of HRV and sleep and recovery or body battery when the HR is wrong all the time. Its plain bad and no matter how beautiful it is at this point is worth as much as 0 dollars.
idk about this amoled in sports watches trend... looks good, but do u really care about looks or efficiency?
They are better screens and are good enough for most use cases in the sports world.
Having said that, I really dig the MIP screen of my watch, I like how it behaves in the sun and that it doesn’t glare in my face if I don’t want it to.
Forerunner 965 x suunto Racer ? 🤔
Is this a downgrade or upgrade from a 9 Peak? Disappointed with the huge bezel and tiny screen on my 9 Peak and was going to buy the Vertical but this looks good.
I’d consider this their top tier, the only advantage with the Vertical being battery life
@@DesFit Thanks for the reply. I think I'll purchase the Race.
Well, now I got to return the 9 Peak Pro Titanium
Hate those lugs lol
One question, if you had to choose between the Suunto Rece and Garmin Forerunner 965 for which of the 2 would you go
What kind of features are you looking for?
@@DesFit I'm looking for a 10 mile running clock every day. something like that nothing more
@@DesFit For you, which one will be better of the two? I want your point of view, you who are an expert in that
The reason I’m asking what kind of features * you are * looking for is everyone has different needs, for instance, I don’t run 10 miles every day. I tend to bike more. That said, the 965 may suit you better.
@@DesFit Thanks
Is it needed to go for the titanium model over the steel model?
Comes down to weight and finish preference
@@DesFit thanks fot the answer. I was worrief about scratches and rust. If that is not an issue i will save the money. Thx
does someone else have the problem of the screen not waking up/ showing the time in do not disturb mode? and not being able to turn off notification sound?
Will vertical take HRV reading ?
Eventually with a software update
Hi Des, can you please tell me if by making race in China, does it matter;I go have my doubts..
Thanks anyway..
Likely just the renewable energy part. Other than that I'm not sure there's any meaningful difference.
Anyone know if you can pair multiple cycling power meters to this?
You can´t pair more than one in any suunto. They should improve it.
@@fjlf1223 agreed 💯
I’ve been thinking about getting a Garmin 255. Do you think it’s worth the extra money for this Suunto ?
My friend, this model works Spotify?
no
The vertical was so laggy between widgets I can’t believe they have carried it over to the Race.
I had to stop watching as soon as I saw the first lag. Imagine having that on your wrist all day.
So laggy in 2023 with these simple OS
I believe to get these kind of battery metrics, they have to under-clock the processors quite considerably - hence the lag.
I am using vertical since its released, never noticed this "laggy" thing untill people start complaining few weeks back. And even after that its not a big deal. Watch is still doing its job very well, i am not expecting that it will fly
@@AR-hq5dp Every Suunto I’ve ever owned, including my current Vertical, has had a ‘laggy’ interface. But so does most of the competition to varying degrees - except for Apple Watch however its battery life speaks for itself.
olá, funciona bem para mim que pratico vela?
This or the Polar Vantage V3?
Same question for me. Think I'll end up with Vantage V3
@@meggerud Me too.
awesome software and display but i still like my Suunto Ambassador...the design is way better..they should have stuck to the physical form of the old model...
I hope this finally forces Garmin to give the forerunners the metal treatment.
The 965 has a titanium bezel
But cheap Gorilla glass.
Who doesnt preffer amoled display, what question is that? :))) It's about battery live for pixel display, double battery life, that's all.
you can listen to music without your phone?
There is no music storage on the Suunto Race, but you still have music controls for a hands free experience.
it's not necessary for anything, because when you run, you prefer not to take your phone with you. which is a pity because it is the prettiest of sports smartwatches, at a normal price.
Hi Des, when full review?
They have a software update coming out soon so was waiting until that came out to publish final review
Tomorrow 😁
So this is how a circular Ultra would look like. Nah, i still prefer the squared off look.
❤
İt looks like there is a lag between swipes.
Does it still count arm movement as steps??
Nearly all watches do
