- If you’ve never used a splitboard before, it may seem complex. Don’t worry, in this video, Brennan Metzler from the American Association of Snowboard Instructors walks you through how to quickly and easily take a splitboard apart and put it back together again, so you can spend more time riding and less time fiddling with your board.

“Almost looks like a snowboard with a gap in the middle” ..... yes... almost ...
Lot of great info. REI get this guy an ongoing series!
Interesting, I've never heard of a split board. Loved the ASMR, though.
I was today years old when I learned about a splitboard
It looks like fun. Pricey entry point but looks worth it
That joke doesn't work
Your 10 month older
Same
I definitely want to try a spilt board sometime for sure! Also love your spilt-board design!
great, the reason I watched this is to check if this process is too complicated or not. thinking of a splitboard, looks like it’s worth to buy and try it 👍🏻🔥
Really well done, nicely informative, but still clear!
Man this seems insanely complicated for a run. But idk, I guess it’s better than snow showing up to a cool spot.
Splitboards are the cargo zip off pants of snowboarding
Stylish and practical?
Excellent demo. So clear and patient even out in the cold. Thank you bro
Thank you for taking the time to watch!
This is wild. So cool!
Do you need "Special Splitboards boots" for this kind of board? Can you use normal boots?
great video, thanks.
Try this easy 42 step process for doing a single snowboard run.
Looks like a lot of work, but must be worth it for those that enjoy the sport. Thanks for the great demo!
Solid tips!
Rocking the Sparks. Nice
I definitely thought this was a comedy thing...
Very useful and informative clip and a fun production to be a part of!
This dude’s a great teacher.
Can you decend in ski configuration, or is that only for uphill?
Splitboards come a long way - since I tried on in the 90's
That's cool for adventurers and all, but I'm curious if there's split boards just for switching from snowboarding to downhill skiing. I definitely don't want to walk up a mountain, but I would like to choose to ski down one sometimes.
No these are purely for snowboarding. Only skiing up
I wonder how they could have fit Miranda into this video :)
Adding "try splitboarding" to my list of video ideas 😁- Miranda
@@rei hey I'm curious, does the skins effect the wear or remove base wax? Also buying a split board which is the best of the best, I don't care the costs but I want quality
I was unaware of how snowboarders do touring, and now I know!
Do you guys sell a split board that can also be used to ski down the hill as well as boarding back down? Loaded question I'm sure. I'm getting back into telemark skiing but nothing too steep or aggressive.
My fingers got numb just watching this
Can you downhill ski with these? If so I'm all in
And now again in a strong wind :DDDD BTW I wanna change my bindings to Sparks as well :)
What might be the cost of this board plz tell us
Hi REI 🙋🏼
Seems like a lot of work for people who deep down just wanna ski
your not supposed to ski with them its just for climbing
@@isaiahblake8723 I think he was making a joke towards us snowboarders lol as in why does a snowboarder go through all this trouble just to skin a mountain like a skier? It would be easier to just ski. Haha
Shows you the lengths we will go to avoid having to downhill ski.
I wanna ski but not spread my legs open to wide big boi ;)
@@beattrixkiddo2725you would need to do the same kinda work on skis, skins and pivot bindings, but you would also need to better boots than ski boots I think
That’s an insane amount of work for so little of an outcome.
Not if you want to backcountry board and you don't have a helicopter.
Can you ride the skis down?
You could always just snow shoe it and pack the board?
You could but you don't get the efficiency of gliding on any traverses. Really depends on the country you're skiing in
Actually this is very clever!
this looks like a lot of work... should i just take up skiing for backcountry? 😬
So it is for people who like hiking in snow but also would like to end the hike with a little ride?
what are the skins for
Would be great if can put a bit more information how to ski down hills with split boards. Can you ski down with skins on? Sometimes, only a little downhill before another uphill in front so need to a little skiing down.
Skins will slow skiis down on the down hill. Also it's like a cross country ski so possible to go down hill, but heel is not locked down so it will be more difficult.
@@bradandelizabethlogue526 it’s basically a convoluted telemark setup
What pack is that exactly?
can you skii downhill with the board in ski mode?
buy it to get onto the chairlift at alta
Haha perfect. Literally just watched a video on guys hiking up Alta to snowboard down.
Winter is coming that’s means less backpacking which means less Miranda 😭😭😭
I'll be around! I've got some big plans for winter content 😉- Miranda
Why this instead of snow shoes ?
Are skins reusable or is it a one time use kind of thing ?
Hey there! The lifespan of skins may vary based on how well they were maintained and cared for. For some basic information to get you started, feel free to check out our "How to Choose Climbing Skins" article here: bit.ly/32TbWhJ
why don't you use spesh grids for skins?
I’ve only seen one of these ever on the mountain lol
@@jameskatz3747 get out of here with your facts and logic, this is the comment section strictly for lols
What’s the main reason for split boards?
Great question, Steve! They are a boon for backcountry adventures. Splitboards allow for floatation in powder snow when ascending up a mountain (when you attach climbing skins to them. The skins provide uphill traction). Additionally splitboards weigh less than a snowboard and provide a fun way to glide back down the mountain you've hiked up.
@@rei My splitboard is heavier than the same model of regular snowboard.
@@rei Splitboard weighs more than a regular snowboard
The main reason for splitboards is to venture into the backcountry. Areas in the mountains where you are not able to reach via chairlifts.
I think the main reason, for me, is so you can skin up a mountain when you are not a skier. That’s why I am looking into them now, I don’t like hiking up with the boots alone, you sink in the snow and is so much more work. Some times pretty painful. I have seen people putting snowshoes over the boots to hike up and carry the board on their backs. Then you have to strap those snowshoes in the backpack somehow to snowboard down.
Thanks, it just confirmed I'll never get one.
So wait, it's not possible to ski with this as an option?
Seems like a lot
So, essentially skies.
What is the purpose of the skins?
Great question! Ski skins (or climbing skins) are used to provide traction when climbing and help prevent backsliding.
What a faff! Also, if a clip is iced up and not secured properly? Accident waiting to happen. Bonkers!
F all that
I snowboard now for 20years
Dont buy splitboard if you not live in location with lot of unacesible bc locations ! Waste of money.
Splitboard is crapy snowboard ( too heavy and hard ), its only usable in powder !
Splitboard is also very crapy when it comes to the skiing attributes.
If you want to board in bc get a snowshoes. Fits in the backpack, cost nothing. When you walk uphill you are faster than the splitboarders and you can reach higher slopes/rocks etc. )
If you want to unacesible bc get a ski with CC bidnings/boots or heli. ( hard to say for me, but its true )
I was wondering why anyone doing this sort of boarding wouldn't just have snow shoes.
Things this complex always have performance, time, and reliability compromises. I'm sure those little clips never ice up or break.
Oh boy... Another contraption that'll cause me to have to wait ANOTHER 5 minutes for my friends that snowboard.
I can already walked up the hill before setting up lol
I can now split board.
Isn't it great? 😃
I imagine you can't quite ski on it for real. It'd be cool if you could both
Yeah, would rather jist carry the board up mountain...
It seems fun but a little annoying to go outside in the cold weather
Snowy adventures might not be everyone's favorite, but you won't know until you try! Maybe you'll find a new outdoor passion. 😉 Thanks for watching and commenting! 🏂
Show more detail on how to remove, adjust, and attach the boots.
You glossed over it and didn't show a closeup at all
|Super! :)
I came here after seeing Lewis' story.
🙌🙌
...or you can just use a pair of skis? lol save yourself some trouble. (just a thought)
Much easier to just carry a pair of snowshoes on my pack
i agree 😂 and way cheaper
Thanks but I'll just ride the lift. See ya at the top!
I just use verts then throw them in my pack… don’t need all the equipment and far cheaper
This is one of the reasons SAR is so busy these days.
I thought this let u board or ski, not walk up a mountain
Noooooooooooooo the skins touched the snow;)
I want.
Granolerblading
Wow. Way too much work. This seems silly to me.
Split boards are expensive…just to let you guys know. 😂
Wow, it’s worse than I thought it was..
or you just ski
Too much paraphernalia to mess with.
why
Why would you want to put it back together just to have your feet tied together? Why restrict freedom of movement? Snowboarders discovering why skiing is a superior sport.
What freedom of movement? You have two long planks attached to your feet. That's maybe a few degrees of freedom at best. And no torsional flex control, either...
