Now that you know how to get better audio in your videos, are you going to change anything? Or were you already NAILING IT?!?
Are you using raleway for your text?
Yes I sure am!
Dunna Did It just purchased a Rode VideoMic Pro+ boom kit❗️ can’t wait to see how well it works
Awesome!! I hope you love it!
Katie Pratt - I would probably go with Lav mics in that situation.
Very good radio edit, covers all the points well. Very watchable video with a good pace and surprisingly effective use of jump cuts! Sometimes people (including me) overdo the B-roll cover up with irrelevant footage because they are frightened of jump cuts. Excellent work, thank you for sharing.
I was searching for a lot of mic videos, but this one was the most informative. I'm glad it was recommended, thanks!
Thanks a ton for watching!
Man! this is the first video that I watch from you and you got 1 more suscriber.
It's so great how you are getting into the small details that a beginner should know, dropping knowledge bombs here and there.
Thank you so much.
Thanks so much for the support!
thanks for this video! i really liked your explanation of the 3 main methods for using the microphones, and what scenarios you like them for. im currently trying to decide what microphone i will invest in. also a great tip about the external recorder.
Excellent video ! U are very explanatory in detail , loved it .
Thanks, you were very clear and informative.
This is just what i needed! have been looking around on the internet how to get better audio. Amazing video
That’s awesome Maquil! Glad you found it helpful! Feel free to let me know if you have any questions!
im starting to love your channel, hopefully you will constantly create helpful videos, keep it up!
Hey Mizan! Glad you are liking my videos! Every Monday I release a new video so make sure to check back (or subscribe and ring that bell 😉)
Great video. Very informative!
Hi , I need your advice what the best external recorder for me as youtuber (video and podcast) maybe in future I will use external mic . What do you suggest zoom , Sony - PCM-D100, or Tascam I really appreciate.
Straight to the point, accurate and variable with what you say, as well as examples (which never hurts). Great video man, keep it up!
Thanks so much!!
Even though it’s a 5 year old video, this is still stuffed full of great relevant advice.
Great video buddy!
Thanks for your lessons. I have really issues with the sound.
Thank you, very helpful.
Awesome video! I’m curious where you got your shotgun mic stand? I want to make sure I pick up a good one 💜
Great stuff! Thank you :)
Thanks dunna. i liked the way you explained point by point . I clear about what i want for me now:)
Glad it was helpful!
Always top notch videos! Great info and tips 👍
Thanks Jo! I appreciate it!
Really great video... I’ve arrived to all of your suggestion through trial and error... wish I had this video when I started out!
Isn't that how it goes?? haha well I'm glad that you could use my video for confirmation if nothing else 😂😉 Cheers Michael!
Excellent information. Thanks so much!!!
Thanks for watching!
I use a rode wireless go mic setup paired with a lav mic. Like the setup but I think your tip on reducing my camera input volume is going to clean things up quite a bit. Thanks!
I love the wireless go! I’ve been using it a lot lately paired with the deity WLav pro. Hope the gain idea helps you!
Dude! Exactly what I needed to know! I‘ve been searching and you cleared nearly all of my questions. Thx!
I started doing my own videos just recently and I’m struggling with audio. I have some mics at home (my wife sings). I was trying to get that xlr signal into my laptop. But only had the iRig pre for that. Quality is...🤨 It seems like I could start with a lav mic for pretty good audio without spending very much to begin with.
🤘
AGC! "Always Good Content!" Dunna, you Dunna Did It again... Great tutorial. Be well, stay encouraged, and Encouraging!
Thanks again Jacob! Always so positive!!
Thank you for a great video! I'm trying to learn how to make better videos for my work, and tutorials like this are super helpful.
Thanks so much for watching Clara! Let me know if there’s anything you’d like me to cover!
We just finished shooting our new project, "Bad Kill", often using two shotgun mikes mounted on C-stands. We shot with four cameras, with one or two cameras wide enough to have the C-stands and mikes (and sometimes other cameras on tripods) within the frame. Then we made sure to shoot plates of those wide shots without the C-stands in frame so that we can mask them out later in post.
Smart!
Just found your channel. Super helpful. Thanks Dunna!
Thank you so much! Let me know if there’s ever anything you want me to cover!
Great videos in general, subscribed ❤️
Thanks so much Marlon! I really appreciate it!
Great video ... About audio. Definitely taking the leap of faith and getting a lire camera + external audio setup
Thanks so much!
Lots of congrats for the great quality content you are posting. I admire your consistency on your videos even that the views are not the ones you deserve. I believe you are going to "explode" really soon on your stats. Keep up the good work you have a new sub from Greece.
Wow Emilio! Thank you so much for the kind words! Hopefully that explosion I’ll happen someday, but if not... I’m just happy making videos! Thanks for the support and if you know anyone who might like my videos, feel free to share them! Cheers!
Dunna Did It I will sure do!!!
Very informative video thanks
Great info, thanks!!
Thanks for watching!
Great video!! How would you suggest that I get the best audio when playing drums live?? Should I use a Zoom mic and sync my cameras to that?
Great video! You are providing me with a lot of useful videos!!
Thanks so much!
great video and just what i needed
Awesome!!
Great video. I use the blink 500 pro b it’s been a learning experience but overall pleased wondering if a boom mic creates a issue in synchronizing the external audio with the video in post... have you ever had that issue? Also where would you point the boom if it’s you interviewing or talking with another person?
Great, answered all my questions
Nice!
Your videos are dope and helpful. I subbed
Thanks so much!!
It is possible to take a interview in a pub and somehow to remove/reduce the background music over the voice? Using camera settings or maybe a special microphone? Talking about RUclips copyrights issues even if the intention is not of using the background music
Loved the intro!
Holy moly! That overhead mic is NOISY!!!!
Dunna! Great vid, thank you for the tips, the lav mic plugged into my phone with the Rhode app may be something I give a try!
Thanks John! It’s definitely worth a try, I’ve filmed a few videos with it and it’s one of my fav setups now!
Dunna Did It only prob I just found out, no rode app for Android 😮
Oh no! I’m sure there are a bunch more audio recording apps. I know zoom used to make one too!
Very nicely done 👏
Niiiiiice. Now I know they’re different microphones I can uses in different situations
You got it my man!
Do you have a video or tips on processing the voice over track in FCP? I'm using the GO2 and have to do a lot work in Audacity to compress/limit the level to get enough volume to use in FCP. I wish I could do it in FCP but Audacity seems to do a better job. thanks 🙏
Hey Dunna, hope you see this comment. I'm looking to start my filmmaking and RUclips journey and I've invested in a boom mic but looking into the audio recorder. It was recommended by someone to get the Zoom H5, I know this vid is a few years old but wondering if you still consider the Zoom H4N Pro you're using here to be a go to, or the H5 is the better one to get? Thanks for this vid, is really helps beginners like myself who are now stepping into a world where sound is key
Hi from the Netherlands! Thank you for your video about Audio! I am a acoustic guitarplayer and would like to live-stream my playing acousticly. I have the Rode Mic on the Sony a64oo but would like my mic to be nearer my guitar instead of the camera. What do you suggest? It has to be live, both video and audio and with an acoustic nylonstring guitar (where every note has it’s own sound so a great soundquality is important). Love to hear from you!
This video is my saver. I am on Sony a6000 . And I wasn't able to find the mic. Also I was amazed when you shot the sequence in the last part that said shot on Sony a6000. I mean how so crisp. Are u on sigma 30mm f1.4 ??? ... Amazed mann
Mohd Arman - the main (closer) shot is on the Sony a6500 with the sigma 30mm f1.4 and the wide shot is on the Sony a6000 with the sigma 16mm f1.4. Thanks for the kind words!
Super informative video!!! I am currently still building my audio setup and am looking at getting the audio technica AT875R. So I was wondering, what are you using to hold your boom mic and zoom h4n? Thanks! :)
Thanks! I’m glad it helped you out! Audio Technica is a great brand!
That gizmo is a Neewer friction arm. They are sooooo awesome! They come in a couple different sizes and I have a handful of them cause they’re just so handy. Here’s a link if u wanna check it out! geni.us/dunnafrictionarm
I'm reviewing several of your tutorials today, and I just finished setting up a small studio at home pulling together some old parts from various projects over the years, but first time using them for recording sound for DSLR shot videos. I'm using a Shure SM7B as a voice over microphone, XLR connected to a Mackie 1202 mixer. Then connecting the Mackie to the Line in on my PC. Finding that I need to boost gain a fair amount on both the Mackie and the Line in, but I seem to be capturing good voice quality without clipping with this setup. I also have a Zoom H4N that has an XLR connection, I found your positive comment about using an external recorder interesting - especially as I don't know how to sync audio yet LOL. So, off to search for a "how to sync audio with my video" tutorial. Any comments on either of these approaches is appreciated, thanks again for the tremendous amount of information you are providing, appreciate it.
Hey Chuck! Thanks for going through my stuff. If it helps, here’s my tutorial on syncing audio
ruclips.net/video/-1-3-VtfG48/видео.html
The SM7B is a great mic but it is notorious for being super quiet. Many people use something called a cloud lifter with it to increase the volume without increasing the noise. Might be something worth checking out! I love my sm7b but I do find I get lots of noise from the preamps because I have to turn them up so loud.
Very interesting.
Tips for a sub $100 external recorder using plug in microphones (lab, boom/shotgun) rather than the build in microphones?
Useful information. My question which I am having problems in getting answers to is what Audio set ups to use while filming adult XXX material. It’s not exactly something that is readily talked about on You Tube, but something I need answered to.
Well, although that’s not a field I have any personal experience with. Ideally, you’d have someone with a boom microphone pointing towards the subject just out of frame but depending on how close the camera is you might be able to get away with an on camera shotgun. Your best bet is to attempt to reach out to someone in the industry and see if you can just ask them straight up.
Ah, very late to this show, recorded Jul 2018, an eternity for camera/audio equipment. But still helpful to this beginner as the boiled-down mic types info and their applications are very relevant IMHO. When I saw the date I questioned watching it so I clicked on your YT home, searched for audio, and was crushed by the avalanche of audio vids. Okay, should have expected that from an audio expert, yet it was overwhelming enough that I trotted back here thinking, hey, 3 yrs isn't that long. 😁My budding studio of equipment now boasts the a7IV with a Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8 APS-C (still remembering your rec for me to start with the Sigma mid-range but that will be my 2nd b/c I want to begin talking head vids). Then I added the Rode VideoMic Go II. Connected it straight into my PC just for fun and it sounded so good, I was tempted to sing! I held off, worried about the neighbors. Wanted the Rode 2-mic wireless LAV, but $600 scared me off so B&H said, how about an on-sale Deity V.LAV (UN-wireless) for $39 and I said, sure, I can get started with that for my LAV setup. It arrived last week. Then B&H kept it up with whispering to me about the Zoom H1n on sale for just $74.99, so it arrived this week. Now that I've seen this video today, I'm amazed to discover that I can just about mirror your 3-yr old system, given my LAV is 12 levels below and my Zoom is 3 levels below what I saw here. So, bottom line-and you thought I would never get to the wrap-up-please accept my appreciation for the work you put into making videos. You have such a library of them for fans like myself that you are making film graduates of us. ⭐x5
This is a pretty weird idea, maybe, but what about using the built-in mics on a portable recorder? I have a Tascam DR07 MKII, and I stick it on the end of a boom stand-with a little windscreen for looks, haha. It's much better than camera audio, and still pretty portable with no wires or cables. Like a hybrid of the phone-lav option and the standard boom; still has to be synced in post in post, though.
What do you think of a setup like this for a middle ground option? Also, any way to improve it?
Hey Dunna, now that this video is 8 months old and tech is always changing, do you have any updated opinion on newer audio gear? Like, do you still use the Sony as your run and gun shotgun mic? Or are you still happy with the lav mic? The external recorder?
Thanks for making great, easy to understand content!
Definitely some updates to this one that I need to do soon. The biggest one is the deity v-mic d3 Pro. Which is my new favorite on camera mic. I also use it as my shotgun when I do my at home videos. geni.us/dunnad3pro
I’m working on upgrading my lav situation but this one still works great. And as long as I don’t need xlr, I really like the Roland r-07 for my external recorder now geni.us/dunnar07
Hope that helps!
I love this video! Question: would it be a good idea to record the same scene on a lav mic and a boom mic and see which sounds better in post? Or would the signals interfere with each other? Filming more narrative style versus being stationary in one place!
Absolutely! You can even mix and match if needed!
Can you make a video of how to set up an external recorder with a shotgun mic?
Audio honestly is my first priority. You can always fix bad vis, it's much harder to fix bad audio. Taking it a step further, sound design (working on some right now on a show i'm working on) is probably one of my favourite layers to apply to an edit. The two really go hand in hand, a nice cut combined with perfect sound design removes any need to flashy transition.
It's ALLLLL IN THE MIXXXXX (TWIX)
:)
okay back to work.
I will admit, for me (disclaimer I’ve been an audio engineer for 10 years) fixing audio is wayyyyy easier!! But I definitely get and agree with the point you were making!
Go eat your Twix bar!! I mean get to work!
Great video as always mate.
Thanks brother!
really helpful. i am suffering from how to choose a right tools for audio by now
I'm glad to hear it was helpful!
Hey Dunna, just subscribed. Any plan on doing a video how you actually post process your audio? Thanks
It’s definitely on my list!
That’s was a great summary of set up. I use a wireless go and lav. I still get some hiss even after adjusting my Fuji x audio settings. I’m considering getting an external recorder to reduce this hiss as suggested. It seems you still have some hiss using one though so I’m thinking maybe some hiss is normal and Fuji is fine. Thoughts?
Insufficient data. But hiss can be caused by many things including auto gain. Switch to manual.
Which mic has better low frequency pickup to make my voice deeper, the senheizer mkh 416 or the rode ntg3? I’m planning on using it about 2 feet from my mouth as a boom mic for my RUclips videos (in my controlled studio).
Is a shotgun mic better sounding trouth a external recorder like a zoom or directly in cam?
Are the Preamps better than the in the cam?
That will be awesome.
What about the so called dynamic mics? The desktop podcast mics. Is it true that they improve the sound of your voice?
Oh man, I was totally out of touch with how good the inexpensive Lavs have become. I've been renting Sennheisers for the last couple years when I need lavs on shoots, but I think I might just invest in a couple cheap ones for the lower-budget stuff.
This is a great resource video for the folks that are just getting into the scene. It'll be nice to have something from a local person to share when people ask me questions.
Side note, I'd be really interested to see you do a video about simple acoustic treatment techniques. Might be another cool resource for new folks.
Thanks for the kind words James!
Yeah if you know how to use it, inexpensive mics can be quite effective! The more expensive ones are often better, but sometimes the cost isn’t worth it! I know I don’t have a ton of money to throw around all the time!
I really appreciate any sharing that you do when people are asking you about this stuff and I’ll definitely consider doing something on acoustic treatment!
The Nikon D3400 has no audio jack for an external microphone. I wish there is a microphone that could also connect thru the hot shoe
thank u bro u helped me a lot :)
My pleasure!!
Hey. What boom stand are you using for the mic?
Any suggestions for an affordable boom pole and mic extension so I can get the mic as close to my head as possible? I'm going to give the boom pole setup a try with my Rode Video micro just to see how I like it.
I use this tall light stand with a long extension rather than a boom pole. geni.us/dunnaboomstand
It does the trick and doubles as a boom light stand when I need it to.
when you record your audio for video, what sample rate do you record at?
Use my cell Samsung to record my video. With clip on and moving several feet further back will wire show.? Also need a longer wire. Is there an inexpensive quality clip on with no wire?
Why not use the H4N directly? Would it pick up too much of the room?
I am currently starting recording videos for RUclips and trying to figure out my set up. I am planning on using a Rode NGT boom mic on a boom pole just like you. However I am confused with the set up. I have seen some people use a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and then connect the mic to it. But, is this what people call the preamp? Or is the Scarlett 2i2 a recorder in an of itself. I was thinking of buying a rodeo H1N and connecting a boom mic to it like yourself however some people have suggested I use a Scarlett and connect the mic to it, My question then is, do I need to connect the mic to the Scarlett and then the Scarlett to the mic recorder such as an H1N or how would the set up be?
hi dunna
i was just checking that which audio will be better for my youtube channel
actually about my kids.i am taking on them.will u please suggest which one will be better for them. thanku ,superb video.
Probably an on camera shotgun. Take a look at the deity D3 geni.us/deityvmicd3
Hi! Im shooting video lessons and I use lavs for the dialogue. What can I use for Live Music sequences? I would like to capture the guitar and vocals together if possible. I appreciate any help.
Thanks for the great upload! Content was top notch. :)
Can you please make a follow-up video on this one and show us how to sync external audio to the video? I mean, there will be different takes and then the lenth of the audio file will not necessarily match with the video file, some times you just leave the audio on and record another take.... All this mess of number of different files to sync scares the crap out of me. And what if on one single recording (audio and video) you have different takes of multiple scenes and then you choose take one OK for scene 1 and take 3 OK for scene/shot 2. How do you match it all up?
Sorry for the long question.... But like they say, "the stupidest question is the one you DON'T ask." ;)
Thanks so much Guarav!
I can definitely make a video on syncing in post! It’s super easy, but you’re right about the potential for it to be confusing. Being organized while you shoot is key! Hit record on audio close to the same time as when you do on video EVERY TIME and you’ll be ok! Keep an eye out for that video!
I appreciate this video but th H4N has really good mics on it to start with and I would like to know how it compares too. (also because it is what I have right now) I would love someone to do a video about all the capacity that the H4N has because I think it is very under utilized). I did not know about half its features when I got it.
H4N is definitely a cool piece of tech. I find it's not super user friendly though.
Awesome video buddy!
Thank you so much!
It's more important 🙌
04/06/2020 Thank you for this video.
Thanks for watching!
hello sir , I want to make videos like you but i m not sure about how to record voice ?
-Same time when record video or voice over then sync ??
-If i record voice over its complicated to sync with face cam video , Voice over good for Tutorial video
So tell me how to record?????
What setting should be done for ASMR audio from Zoom H2N ...please help me by replying...I am completely new in this field .I will be thankful for your suggestion . waiting for the reply
I found this video very useful. Thanks! But how about recording outdoors where interviews do happen more than often!
Lav mic outdoors is probably the “easiest” but ideally I’d still like to have a mic on a boom with a wind cover
yeah! amen brothaman. thanks!
😁😁👍
Thanks, that is a great video!
I am planning online dance courses. I am shooting in a studio, where there is quite some echo.
I need to talk while I move to explain the movement. Any inexpensive suggestions to begin with?
Many thanks!!!
For that application, I would probably go with some kind of lav or headset mic 😁
@@dunnadidit Thanks for the answer! To be more specific, the movement can be really fast, and includes rolling on the floor, jumping, falling, swinging, turning, rolling, etc. So I can't imagine any lav or headset that would actually stay on me or wouldn't seriously restrict the movement... I also need to avoid a good recording of the floor bangs.. Maybe I can hang something from the ceiling. (What?) Or should I try a shotgun mic placed somewhere out of the video frame better? Thank you very much for any thought or suggestion!!
Great video! 😄
Thanks dude!
Is it possible for you to create a video on how to "post process audio" to make sound better considering different pitches? There are not many videos and considering you have a audio background I think your tips will be helpful.
Specifically I am interested to understand what channel EQ / compressor and other similar effects are and how to use them effectively.
i go with the LAV,,but the thing is you have to sync and you said is a bit of a pain,,,like you video mate,,very informative,,
Yeah people don’t seem to like syncing! I don’t mind it! But I’ve also been working with audio for 10 years so maybe it’s just that I’m used to that kind of thing!
Great video! super helpful.
Quick question @Dunna Did It: If you're doing multiple takes and you have audio from a mic going into the H4n, do you
A: have some way of triggering the H4n to record, or
B: manually press record on the H4n before pressing record on the camera each time, or
C: just leave the H4n recording the whole time, then split up the audio later in post (which sounds quite difficult)
?
I will manually start and stop the h4n each time I hit record on the camera. It’s kind of a pain when you’re a solo creator, but it saves time later because every video file has an audio file to go with it.
@@dunnadidit Sweet, thanks for the quick reply. If I ever find a solution to trigger both at once I'll let you know!
Sounds great!!
Good videos man haha 👏
Thanks dude!! Lol 😂 😉
im new to all this, what bout connecting the lav mic into the external audio recorder?is that possible? thaanks
Sure is! As long as it has the right input connections!
Do you postprocess your audio in your video editor or in a DAW? Do you use any thirdparty plug-in for your audio?
Unfortunately I do it in my video editor. Which, as a person who makes his living in a DAW, can be a bit frustrating. But for what I do, it still seems like the best way for now. And yes, if premiere let’s me (some freezing issues) I usually use some fabfilter plugins and izotope to clean things up.
Dunna - I am putting together a studio - what stands and parts do you recommend we mount an apurture c300 and a rode NTG3 ? I'm very new and I don't see anyone post about stands often (I guess because people think they're boring?). Please let me know and thanks!!
I would suggest a c-stand for the 300d for sure.
The one I use: geni.us/Iaj8LBC
And for a boom for the mic, I use this one: geni.us/dW94R
*these are affiliate links... just so you know 😁
@@dunnadidit Thanks Dunna! I'm picking these up!!
My pleasure!
I think you are the right man I was looking for.
I have rode NtG 2 mice and Sony a7 camera.
I lost my zoom h recorder.
The sound straight from mice to camera is not good. And I can’t afford new zoom recorder.
Is there anything I can do to get quality sound using NtG mice and Sony a7 ?
Thank you.
Loved your videos.
And Subscribed too.
Hey! You’re going to need something like the saramonic pax1 that acts as a preamp before your preamp. That being said, it’s almost as expensive as the zoom! Might be worth doing an amazon search for camera preamp and seeing what you find. You’ll either need to find one with phantom power or use a battery in your mic :)
Thank you so much
That help a lot
My pleasure!
I am considering buying a rode ntg2 for my films...I already have the h4n pro but heard that combining it with the ntg2 is not good for the audio quality..is that right?
I found the ntg2 a bit noisy with the h4n. Not sure if it was specifically that combo or just that I had a noisy copy of the microphone.
Thanks to this video I became a subscriber.
Thanks for the support!!
Hey Dunna, I'm a DJ I have a few Shure mics (sm58, handheld, etc) and a lav Sennheiser kit. Just started by buying a 6500 and 16mm sigma lens for wedding videos of my productions, might start explaining in videos what's going on. What should I use? The lav? Should I get a shotgun mic? Thanks for all your videos they really help out!
Also what settings are best for filming on the a6500? I will also edit in PP.
Hey! I would probably go with the lav if you can from what I understand of your project.
As far as settings. Film in 4k 100mbps 24fps and keep your shutter speed at 1/50s. Use iso and aperture to dial in exposure and you should be good!
@@dunnadidit thank you!
My pleasure!!
What type of mic setup would you recommend to record a small group?
Ideally, something stereo to record a group. You could use one of the zoom recorders’ built in mics or look at some of the stereo mic options out there.
I would like to hear the Sony Shotgun Mic processed properly. It sounds like it needs either a deesser, low pass filter, eq, compression or all of above.
Yeah, typically I do process them well(I’m an audio engineer and music producer by career) but I figured for this video it made sense to show them dry. I always compress it and pull back the high end cause it’s a super bright and tinny mic. I think part of the problem with that mic is the auto leveling though. It makes it sound even more harsh than it might be otherwise. But even processed, the rode still sounds better. And I now have a couple rode video mic pros and they sound significantly better straight in than the sony does.
