    Very good radio edit, covers all the points well. Very watchable video with a good pace and surprisingly effective use of jump cuts! Sometimes people (including me) overdo the B-roll cover up with irrelevant footage because they are frightened of jump cuts. Excellent work, thank you for sharing.

But only had the iRig pre for that. Quality is...🤨 It seems like I could start with a lav mic for pretty good audio without spending very much to begin with.

    We just finished shooting our new project, "Bad Kill", often using two shotgun mikes mounted on C-stands. We shot with four cameras, with one or two cameras wide enough to have the C-stands and mikes (and sometimes other cameras on tripods) within the frame. Then we made sure to shoot plates of those wide shots without the C-stands in frame so that we can mask them out later in post.

    Hi from the Netherlands! Thank you for your video about Audio! I am a acoustic guitarplayer and would like to live-stream my playing acousticly. I have the Rode Mic on the Sony a64oo but would like my mic to be nearer my guitar instead of the camera. What do you suggest? It has to be live, both video and audio and with an acoustic nylonstring guitar (where every note has it’s own sound so a great soundquality is important). Love to hear from you!

    I'm reviewing several of your tutorials today, and I just finished setting up a small studio at home pulling together some old parts from various projects over the years, but first time using them for recording sound for DSLR shot videos. I'm using a Shure SM7B as a voice over microphone, XLR connected to a Mackie 1202 mixer. Then connecting the Mackie to the Line in on my PC. Finding that I need to boost gain a fair amount on both the Mackie and the Line in, but I seem to be capturing good voice quality without clipping with this setup. I also have a Zoom H4N that has an XLR connection, I found your positive comment about using an external recorder interesting - especially as I don't know how to sync audio yet LOL. So, off to search for a "how to sync audio with my video" tutorial. Any comments on either of these approaches is appreciated, thanks again for the tremendous amount of information you are providing, appreciate it.

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  5 лет назад +3

      Hey Chuck! Thanks for going through my stuff. If it helps, here’s my tutorial on syncing audio
      ruclips.net/video/-1-3-VtfG48/видео.html
      The SM7B is a great mic but it is notorious for being super quiet. Many people use something called a cloud lifter with it to increase the volume without increasing the noise. Might be something worth checking out! I love my sm7b but I do find I get lots of noise from the preamps because I have to turn them up so loud.

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  3 года назад +1

      Well, although that’s not a field I have any personal experience with. Ideally, you’d have someone with a boom microphone pointing towards the subject just out of frame but depending on how close the camera is you might be able to get away with an on camera shotgun. Your best bet is to attempt to reach out to someone in the industry and see if you can just ask them straight up.

    Ah, very late to this show, recorded Jul 2018, an eternity for camera/audio equipment. But still helpful to this beginner as the boiled-down mic types info and their applications are very relevant IMHO. When I saw the date I questioned watching it so I clicked on your YT home, searched for audio, and was crushed by the avalanche of audio vids. Okay, should have expected that from an audio expert, yet it was overwhelming enough that I trotted back here thinking, hey, 3 yrs isn't that long. 😁My budding studio of equipment now boasts the a7IV with a Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8 APS-C (still remembering your rec for me to start with the Sigma mid-range but that will be my 2nd b/c I want to begin talking head vids). Then I added the Rode VideoMic Go II. Connected it straight into my PC just for fun and it sounded so good, I was tempted to sing! I held off, worried about the neighbors. Wanted the Rode 2-mic wireless LAV, but $600 scared me off so B&H said, how about an on-sale Deity V.LAV (UN-wireless) for $39 and I said, sure, I can get started with that for my LAV setup. It arrived last week. Then B&H kept it up with whispering to me about the Zoom H1n on sale for just $74.99, so it arrived this week. Now that I've seen this video today, I'm amazed to discover that I can just about mirror your 3-yr old system, given my LAV is 12 levels below and my Zoom is 3 levels below what I saw here. So, bottom line-and you thought I would never get to the wrap-up-please accept my appreciation for the work you put into making videos. You have such a library of them for fans like myself that you are making film graduates of us. ⭐x5

    This is a pretty weird idea, maybe, but what about using the built-in mics on a portable recorder? I have a Tascam DR07 MKII, and I stick it on the end of a boom stand-with a little windscreen for looks, haha. It's much better than camera audio, and still pretty portable with no wires or cables. Like a hybrid of the phone-lav option and the standard boom; still has to be synced in post in post, though.
    What do you think of a setup like this for a middle ground option? Also, any way to improve it?

    Hey Dunna, now that this video is 8 months old and tech is always changing, do you have any updated opinion on newer audio gear? Like, do you still use the Sony as your run and gun shotgun mic? Or are you still happy with the lav mic? The external recorder?
    Thanks for making great, easy to understand content!

      Definitely some updates to this one that I need to do soon. The biggest one is the deity v-mic d3 Pro. Which is my new favorite on camera mic. I also use it as my shotgun when I do my at home videos. geni.us/dunnad3pro
      I’m working on upgrading my lav situation but this one still works great. And as long as I don’t need xlr, I really like the Roland r-07 for my external recorder now geni.us/dunnar07
      Hope that helps!

    Audio honestly is my first priority. You can always fix bad vis, it's much harder to fix bad audio. Taking it a step further, sound design (working on some right now on a show i'm working on) is probably one of my favourite layers to apply to an edit. The two really go hand in hand, a nice cut combined with perfect sound design removes any need to flashy transition.
    It's ALLLLL IN THE MIXXXXX (TWIX)
    :)
    okay back to work.

I’m considering getting an external recorder to reduce this hiss as suggested. It seems you still have some hiss using one though so I’m thinking maybe some hiss is normal and Fuji is fine. Thoughts?

      Insufficient data. But hiss can be caused by many things including auto gain. Switch to manual.

    Oh man, I was totally out of touch with how good the inexpensive Lavs have become. I've been renting Sennheisers for the last couple years when I need lavs on shoots, but I think I might just invest in a couple cheap ones for the lower-budget stuff.
    This is a great resource video for the folks that are just getting into the scene. It'll be nice to have something from a local person to share when people ask me questions.
    Side note, I'd be really interested to see you do a video about simple acoustic treatment techniques. Might be another cool resource for new folks.

      Yeah if you know how to use it, inexpensive mics can be quite effective! The more expensive ones are often better, but sometimes the cost isn’t worth it! I know I don’t have a ton of money to throw around all the time!
      I really appreciate any sharing that you do when people are asking you about this stuff and I’ll definitely consider doing something on acoustic treatment!

    I am currently starting recording videos for RUclips and trying to figure out my set up. I am planning on using a Rode NGT boom mic on a boom pole just like you. However I am confused with the set up. I have seen some people use a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and then connect the mic to it. But, is this what people call the preamp? Or is the Scarlett 2i2 a recorder in an of itself. I was thinking of buying a rodeo H1N and connecting a boom mic to it like yourself however some people have suggested I use a Scarlett and connect the mic to it, My question then is, do I need to connect the mic to the Scarlett and then the Scarlett to the mic recorder such as an H1N or how would the set up be?

    Thanks for the great upload! Content was top notch. :)
    Can you please make a follow-up video on this one and show us how to sync external audio to the video? I mean, there will be different takes and then the lenth of the audio file will not necessarily match with the video file, some times you just leave the audio on and record another take.... All this mess of number of different files to sync scares the crap out of me. And what if on one single recording (audio and video) you have different takes of multiple scenes and then you choose take one OK for scene 1 and take 3 OK for scene/shot 2. How do you match it all up?
    Sorry for the long question.... But like they say, "the stupidest question is the one you DON'T ask." ;)

      Thanks so much Guarav!
      I can definitely make a video on syncing in post! It’s super easy, but you’re right about the potential for it to be confusing. Being organized while you shoot is key! Hit record on audio close to the same time as when you do on video EVERY TIME and you’ll be ok! Keep an eye out for that video!

    Quick question @Dunna Did It: If you're doing multiple takes and you have audio from a mic going into the H4n, do you
    A: have some way of triggering the H4n to record, or
    B: manually press record on the H4n before pressing record on the camera each time, or
    C: just leave the H4n recording the whole time, then split up the audio later in post (which sounds quite difficult)
    ?

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  3 года назад +2

      I will manually start and stop the h4n each time I hit record on the camera. It’s kind of a pain when you’re a solo creator, but it saves time later because every video file has an audio file to go with it.

      Hey! You’re going to need something like the saramonic pax1 that acts as a preamp before your preamp. That being said, it’s almost as expensive as the zoom! Might be worth doing an amazon search for camera preamp and seeing what you find. You’ll either need to find one with phantom power or use a battery in your mic :)

    I would like to hear the Sony Shotgun Mic processed properly. It sounds like it needs either a deesser, low pass filter, eq, compression or all of above.

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  5 лет назад +1

      Yeah, typically I do process them well(I’m an audio engineer and music producer by career) but I figured for this video it made sense to show them dry. I always compress it and pull back the high end cause it’s a super bright and tinny mic. I think part of the problem with that mic is the auto leveling though. It makes it sound even more harsh than it might be otherwise. But even processed, the rode still sounds better. And I now have a couple rode video mic pros and they sound significantly better straight in than the sony does.
