It's a lot easier to get the Tier 1 and 2 jets fully equipped after five or six missions, however, you can also rack up "cash" competing in the Challenges. Tier 3 jets take a while due to the high cost of the planes and upgrades, but if you knock the missions out for the preceding jet you should be good to go for the next one.
