- It’s no secret that the God of the Bible has a dark side. Throughout the Old Testament, God is responsible for a slew of natural disasters: from erasing life on Earth in an apocalyptic to unleashing devastating plagues of biblical proportions. Like it or not, God has a death toll. Has anyone gone through the Bible and counted it?
Combing through the Bible and calculating God’s kill count culminates with a frightening number in the millions. In this video's thumbnail, I am using the figure where the Bible gives precise statistics. The real number, including various estimations, is much higher...
This sometimes violent depiction of God has always fascinated me. It’s so different to the peaceful God of the New Testament. I want to find an explanation for this behaviour - one that’s rooted in the history of this book.

Referring to the Biblical God and narrative:
Idea 1) God is all good, God created all things, like the nature of God all things he created are good.
Idea 2) God created all things, that includes Satan. Satan along with other angels were initially good but then rebelled against God and turned to wickedness. Satan is not all good
Based off of 1 & 2, I can then assume: Since God created Satan, God's creations are faulty and imperfect, and are not all good. Therefore God is also faulty and imperfect.

Something else to consider is, how big is "the world" the writers describe? Remembering that a map of the entire globe was not available at the time, their view of their "world" would be rather small. Thinking about Watership Down when the rabbits get to the down for the first time, they say they can see "the whole world" when certainly it's a relatively small part of England.

Well things like the "global flood" were (if true) actually global, not just the world the writers knew. The facts of the Bible apply even if the writers didn't understand the full extent of them
"Global" at the time, meant the middle east and north africa, not southern europe, central asia or central europe, seriously even saying that is ridiculous. The people at the time did not even have accurate maps and directions to neighboring cities came from word of mouth. Noah's flood which was mentioned in the bible was taken from Mesopotamian folklore, you can see this in the epic of gilgamesh which consists of sumerian tales and legends. The biblical flood was likely real and modern historians suggest it could be linked to a flood around Mesopotamia at around 5,000 bc.

About the boys making fun of Elisha, there’s something important to take into account. Actually a couple of them.
1. Elisha wasn’t being mocked by little children, but by young men of unknown age. Even if we don’t know how old they were, they weren’t kids but young men.
2. The number of these young men is quite important. The number that were mauled by the bears was 42. Not 2 or 3 but 42. The verses also imply that the rest of the young men ran away.
3. The young men were threatening Elisha and telling him to ascend to his master Elijah. Basically, they were mocking him and telling him “hey bald guy, we’re gonna kill you and you’ll see your master!”
They never said they were gonna kill him and neither threatened him, that's an extremely forced interpretation to pretend like god is moral in today's concept of morality.
Second, unknown age young man still might means they might be kids in today's conception of what is a kid (Mary for example was very likely a 14yo when she married Joseph and got magically pregnant, not a kid by the time, definitely a kid that's not supposed to be pregnant in today's measurement of age)

God is more moral than any human could ever dream to be. He is just, He is merciful, He is love. He gave us free will because He loves us, but He can’t ignore our evil actions. In Romans it says that the wages of sin is death. Death is the price for our sins. The good thing is that God doesn’t want us to die because of our sins but instead wants us to live. That’s why He made a covenant with the Israelites and later on sent His son Jesus Christ as the perfect sacrifice for our sins.
However, He won’t force anyone to believe in Him. It comes back to the freedom of choice I mentioned He made us with. We can choose to rebel, to look for explanations to moral, physical, and social issues elsewhere or we can seek Him.
Regardless of how far you get into this comment that I’ve made in response to your comment, I hope you have a blessed day and that you are safe and sound wherever you may be. Remember that Jesus loves you (yeah it probably sounds corny but it’s the truth) and that He wants what’s best for you.
@@luismorel604 I did some research and it states that the young men may have been mocking Elisha due to being a prophet of the Lord. That’s why they told him to go up, they were mocking him and telling him to ascend to heaven like his master Elijah did. Just a little more info I found that was relevant to the discussion at hand. Science and religion don’t have to compete, there was a time when the two went hand in hand. The Big Bang theory was literally theorized by a catholic priest. That’s not to say all religious people are rational, I’m just saying it’s possible to be so.

Pretty much all of his kills are indirect, decieving a weak-minded human into committing murder. If you count that, it goes into the billions and counting.
This is a hard subject for a lot of people to grapple with, esp ones currently going through faith questioning and even deconstruction..thank you so much for this video. You've really helped me see my childhood faith in a completely new light.
Im not religious but I get it. Where I dont agree with most religion is it teaches to see everything in divinity instead of divinity in everything. So that when we see evidence of the nature of god in our surroundings, if it doesnt quite line up with what ones religion dictates as true, one can tend to have an existential crisis. I say if it helps you be a good person and helps bring a sense of order and security in a chaotic world, believe what you want as long as its not predatory.

It's justified in the sense that in the Old Testament when God judged a people the immortal souls of the children were saved due to being killed.
The immortal souls of children go directly to heaven when they die because they have yet to reach an age of understanding.
Look at this from God's perspective...
God considers the immortal soul to be more important than our mortal existence and if the children were left alive when God judged a people in the Old Testament instead of being killed when the rest of their people were judged then they would live beyond the age of understanding and become aware of their sins and then be guilty of sin and be condemned for it.

God is still called Judge in the new testament, and executor. He killed Herod and Ananias and Sapphira in Acts in the new testament. God is unchanging, all-knowing. There's no learning for him since he knows the end from the beginning. That means whatever he is, he's always been. And whatever he was, he still is.
God in the Old testament is still revealed as love who never takes pleasure in the death of the wicked (his own words) yet strong and power enough to execute swift judgement. He spared Nineveh and turned from the evil he planned to do to them when they repented. He was grieved at his heart before the flood because of mankind. And throughout the old testament he works toward setting up the cross where he himself would be crucified in the Son.
He doesn't usually offer an explanation for the deaths in the bible and he doesn't have to. Life is his, we were given it from God. Death is God taking back what it is his.

@@CallMePseudonymous I suppose any thing in authority uses an element of fear to bring obedience. In government we usually fear prosecution if we break the law. Children usually would fear punishment from their parents if they disobey. One would fear being fire by his boss if he was a slacker and broke company policy.
Consequences of choice are in every element of authority. If fear is the only thing keeping you in line though, that is abuse of power. I don't find the God of the bible that way. Many people in the world continue on seemingly without consequences of their choices. I would say God is very patient and restraint when it comes to anger and power. God didn't even kill the first murderer Cain, but warned him before sinned to turn back. God didn't kill anyone till the flood, and used Noah to preach 120 years to the people while the ark was preparing until the flood came.
The Canaanites were exterminated, but the exception Rahab a harlot who decided to put her trust in God and help Israel. You can view the severity of God's wrath which is more terrifying than man's wrath, but you can also view the intensity of his compassion and mercy and love, in both old and new testaments.

Seeing as you are not a religious person I greatly admire your respect and restraint at passing judgement on the Christian world view, it would be easy to do so hearing statistics like these. As a protestant and a Christian that views aspects of the bible more metaphorically than literally, I have my own views on this Theological 'issue' if anyone outside of the faith is interested. In regards to the example you gave of the bears, I would personally (though I know others perhaps wouldn't) attribute that to a bear attack that has been interpreted as divine intervention. I think that's fair to say but I know some more orthodox people might take issue with this as it shows the bible has some inaccuracies that can be accredited to humans. But let's get to the meat of the matter! Why is there such a difference between the new testament god and the old testament god? You touched on this point slightly but I thought I'd throw a key Theological point in the ring. The new testament is about the new covenant between man and god, e.g. the new relationship that was created. Jesus's purpose (in the eyes of Christians) was to reconcile the relationship between God and man, which had been destroyed after the original sin (Adam and eve). In the old testament the many rules that exist and strictly adhered to were meant to be the Jews way of apologising to God for their inherent sinfulness (simplified). The new covenant (created by Jesus's life, death and resurrection) is meant to repair this damaged relationship so that we mere mortals can ask for God's forgiveness and recieve it as long as we believe in him and the trinity. That's why God no longer needs to punish or judge anyone until the 2nd coming, because the new covenant exists and mans 'debt' so to speak is paid. I hope this makes sense to people and demonstrates the nuance of the Christian faith moving from the old testament to the new. Whether you disagree or not I write this comment to inform, not to convert, not to judge, and certainly not to recieve hate. You and I are all entitled to our beliefs. Peace and love. Hope this was interesting to all.

I'm loving your videos so much!! As an atheist person who grew up in a very religious Jewish household it's so fun watching your content from an historical point of view and not religious. Most of the stories you mention I've learnt in my childhood so it's entertaining hearing your way of telling them. Plus, I genuinely enjoy hearing you speak Hebrew here and there and the way you pronounce the words (I'm fluent in hebrew) and your voice is one of the most soothing voices I've heard in my life.
Your life sounds strangely similar to me, I never was able to learn Hebrew but and I was atheist up until a couple months ago, I’m 100% God is real in some form, we are connected to Jesus Christ. And divine timing is so so so real.

The passage about Elisha is misunderstood tho, to begin with Elisha was not old he was still young and able to defend himself and "boys" here is a mistranslation, the original hebrew in this occurrance should translate as young men, lads, on top of that the palestinian bear is quite small and the passage doesn't really tell us that the bears killed the lads, we just assume it cause we usually think of the large european and american bear, but it's more plausible that the bears in this case being small and having to do with 42 opponents only harassed them and scared them away, it's probably supposed to be somewhat comical in tone showing the enemies of a prophet threatening him with violence but ending up being scared away by the power of god.

I'm almost certain that is what this commenter meant by "Every human is fated to die." - Literal fate has nothing to do with it. Along with this, believing in resurrection shouldn't change someone's view on whether god has "technically" killed everyone who's died. If someone undoes the effects of an action they took then that doesn't mean that the action never took place.

Not religious, but my favorite interpretation of why old testament god was a monster in comparison to the new testament is because he, as a divine being, could not fathom what it meant - what it felt - to exist as human.
So incarnating into Jesus on earth, he learned that his own rules were unfair and he set humanity up to fail.
Jesus's sacrifice in allowing sin to be forgiven was God's apology; making amends for the past.

I questioned my friends on why murder was alright depending on the perpetrator. I’m especially annoyed by the death of the first born Egyptian sons which wouldn’t have been necessary at all if God didn’t purposely harden the Pharaoh’s heart.
I like to preface this question by asking if they thought king Herod was indeed evil. They always reply yes, because he killed innocent people. Then I hit them with the God question and suddenly it’s not the same. It makes me wonder about people’s morals. Are they only concerned about the death of innocent people because it was carried out by someone they aren’t supposed to like? Why is it okay for God to gamble with the devil over Job’s devotion? Are we simply trivial playthings to this God for exalting himself? And I never really get answers to these questions. Not from Christians at least.
That is because God is the giver of all life, so he can take away anybody's life at anytime and he is still righteous. He does not allow others to take away other's lives because their lives do not belong to them, they belong to God. and in the old testament, alot of pagan nations including the Egyptians were nephilim blood, so God had wanted to eradicate them from surfacing on land as a population, this is why he arranged Exodus (kill the Egyptian armies in the red sea, because nephilims only die by drowning/decapitation of head), then he arranged killing the giant nephilims in Canaan when the Israelites took over the land, Pharaoh was allowed to be raised as ruler and have his heart hardened because he was a dishonorable vessel(doomed to perish from birth), the rest are all significance of salvation of the gospel, such that wrath fell upon those that do not have the lamb's blood aka the Egyptian, the hebrews believe in God so they put the lamb's blood on their door, if they didn't they too would have their first born killed. it simply means all are sinners without the blood of Jesus aka deserving of wrath. Also the amount of years of slavery in Egyptian and the sins of Canaanites are calculated and accumulated to bring about that level of wrath on them, that's around 400 years, it is a long time before they are destroyed. it is always about eradicating the nephilims and human permitting deaths through bad decision making and sins. Sin always leads to death, once disorder is created on the land, it has to be paid with wrath or a sacrifice, so the old testament times were actually showing how sin is evil and its appropriate punishment. Now after Jesus is resurrected, the physical death penalties are no longer needed because Jesus has fulfilled the law(he never sinned), so in essence people do not have to be killed physically for sin now, for it is about spiritual death now, thus the change in a wrathful image of God to a merciful one, but it is because Jesus face the wrath in person already, so he can give himself to people legally in mercy as he is the perfect sacrifice

The Bible never put us on equal footing with God. We're told to fear and love God, precisely because of his power over life and death. You're implying that a person, full of sin, biases and blemishes, can be judged to the same extent as the creator of all things. You're also applying your conception of death to God, when someone dies, to us, it's a heartbreaking thing because to us, their existence just ended. To God, killing someone is basically just moving him from one plane of existence to another, which he has full control over, why should he feel guilty or uncertain?

When one looks at old-testament God, and then looks at the classical Greek Pantheon, you can see how similar they are in temperament. They are not ‘All-loving’ gods which ‘Cherish’ Humankind, they are the masters, and something to be feared. They depict a deity in its truest sense, an explanation for the world and all its evils, and it only makes sense that the Lord is to be feared.

I have 2 points.
1. . The term "Murder/Murderer" is only applicable to created beings. If I kill a fellow human being here on earth, I am a murderer.
God is the creator of all humans. So He has complete rights to do what he wants to do with his creation. Period.
And when God chooses to end someone's life on earth, he is not killing them. He is the one who decides how long a person should live. He is merely changing their location from earth to where he is.
2. To a non-christian like you, death may seem like the worst thing that could possibly happen to a human. We Christians know that that is not the case. Eternal life in hell because of our own sins is the ultimate worst thing that could happen to us. Who causes us to sin? The devil. Who gave us a gift of forgiveness? God. Why do many humans choose to reject that gift? Because they listen to the devil.
So, saying that the devil has physically killed lesser people in the bible, than the number of people whose lives on earth ended because God decided, is a non-sequitur.
The devil because of his evil manipulations has sent zillions of people to hell (which is 100 times worse than death). Meanwhile, God died on the cross to pay our punishment so that we could be free from sin and live with him in heaven (even though we did not deserve it.)

This is your first video I watch and I really like it, even tho I do look at the subject in question from a more religious point of view, being Christian myself, I do think that the historical context helps understand some parts of the bible, and at the end of the day, I’d much rather have one god with a giant death count, than 10+ that have that + other really bad things

When analysing text it helps to know as much as you can about the context. Who is/are the author/s? What was their purpose in writing it down? What information did they have access to? What genre/style is it? What do we know about the culture/s they came from? How did they change over time? What differing views did people hold about the subject? Has it been censored/edited? What is lost in translation? What cultural biases are colouring our own interpretation of the text?
To me, asking these questions of the Hebrew bible results in more engaging, enlightening, and fascinating answers than any face value reading of the text.
Was the flood ever meant to be taken literally?
I really think that most of the stories in the bible are just meant to be symbolic and weren't really meant to be taken literally. But people took it too seriously and now you have Christians that refuse to believe in dinosaurs or evolution, even though these are well documented phenomenon that can be backed up by empirical evidence. Science is not a conspiracy theory, it's just a way of documenting reality as objectively as we humanely can.
Here's my perspective as an atheist: you can still believe in god if you want, but it doesn't mean that you need to ignore science. There are still a lot of ways that these two entities can co-exist. For example, the universe is amazingly fine-tuned. If some physical constants were just a little bit different, life as we know it probably wouldn't be able to exist. One way to explain this, if you'd like, is that the universe was intelligently designed. Maybe god didn't create us directly, but he wrote the physical laws that would eventually lead to our creation.
Another idea: we still don't know where life came from. It seems kind of weird that a bunch of inanimate matter just fused together in the right way to create a cell. Perhaps the earth was "seeded" intentionally.
Of course, to accept any of these ideas, Christians would need to accept that the bible isn't perfect and that it isn't meant to be taken literally, which seems unlikely. But this would be a great way to reconcile religion with science, if that's what you want. Science is such an important thing in our daily lives, it just seems silly that so many people are against it.

There wasnt some kind of unexplainable change. God did not just start being described as Father or mercy or loving in the New Testament. Read psalms for example. Jesus himself talked alot about hell and punishment. To act as if there was some major change is simply pointing to the reader not paying attention. There is a new covenant in the new testament. Which means the relationship with God and man is very different to how it was before. But there is no unexplainable change in God's character.

Additional fun fact: despite what many modern Christians want to believe, Jesus was an Apocalyptic Jew and believed the entire Old Testament. It was the basis for all he supposedly did, and he specifically references it plenty, insisting that he did NOT come to replace the old law, but to fulfill it.

@@rexo14569 Not only is that wrong, as Jesus references some of those old rules and claims that he does not mean to replace the old covenant- but you’ve ignored the belief part. The Old Testament details the story of Eden, Noah’s Flood, Exodus, and all that- which Jesus believed in. Most modern Christians know full well that these stories are inviable nonsense, but ignore that their prophet believed them in the most literal way.

Angels aren't benevolent, _they're weapons of war._
They are the messengers of God, the instrument that operates to his orders.
He, a being that is described as omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient, chooses to not only not engage with us directly, but send more of his creations to interact with his kind.
Angels throughout history, were described as being seen only as tools of intervention at the best of times, and impending annihilation at worst.
They are the blaring sirens warning of an incoming bomber squadron, the screaming alarms foretelling the very forces of nature have turned against us, and are on their way.
But Angels are different than just mere warning systems.
Because warning systems don't originate from the flood, nor from the hurricane nor bombing raid.
No, Angels are merely a "heads up".
A "judgement will be upon you soon, repent".
They are the carriers of terror tactics hither to unseen in our world bar the worst distillations of societal control.
It is every time that i hear about or read the brutal reality of this being, of God, i am reminded of this.
That God is often described as a benevolent and just god, one that weighs your actions, against a pre-established norm, and either rewards or punishes you for them.
But beyond the veil of kindness and compassion, lies the same nigh-omnipotent being that sends his generals out before the main force, not with a compromise, not with an ultimatum or any semblance of choice, but with a simple 'This is what is about to happen to you.
