    • @harryallenpearce89
      @harryallenpearce89 3 года назад +108

      Exactly
      The correct term is deuterocanonical. Tobit, Judith, Baruch, Wisdom of Solomon, Sirach, 1 & 2 Maccabees have been in the Bible since conception. Only Protestants have the Luther Canon which removed Scripture from the Bible.
      That said, the fact Irenaeus, disciple of Polycarp, disciple of John, disciple of Jesus Christ, is mentioned, and pronounced correctly, I give the film maker a pass on the Apocrypha confusion.

    • @duswil3934
      @duswil3934 3 года назад +49

      @@harryallenpearce89 The term apocrypha was applied to the books by Jerome who died in AD420. He insisted that they were not scripture and did not want to include them in the Vulgate but was overruled. The disputation on these books does not originate with the reformation.

      Dus Wil
      Jerome quoted those writings as Scripture later.
      You left that part out.
      And it was Martin Luther that moved those books to the center and titled the Apocrypha, declaring them to not be Scripture.
      Both Jerome and Luther were referring back to the Council of Jamnia. Not only was the Deuterocanonical books left out, Jesus Christ was also rejected as Messiah, and all NT writings were rejected.
      In Jerome’s defense, he didn’t know that canonization happened AFTER the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, which is why Jerome changed his opinion later, quoting those writings.
      Martin Luther doesn’t have that excuse.

      I mean as a commenter put it, the bible is literally just a bunch of fanfiction and eventually some people decided what was canon and what isn't. The bible is already a mess of plotholes and continuity errors in it of itself, but adding the other books would make it into an ungodly and impossible to understand amalgamation of weird stories. It would be cool to have a complete bible for historical purposes, but seeing how religious people put the bible on such a high pedestal, they probably wouldn't take a complete bible seriously and they'd say that it's blasphemy or something weird like that.

All he wants is for mankind to reach deep understanding of the soul, the universe and the collective experience. The heavens and earth is actually hell. It's not where the true god resides. The true god wants mankind to break it's cycle of life, death, Reincarnation and enter his domain where the greater reality awaits. That's really what Jesus tried to convey judas.

    What most people do not consider is that "The Bible" was translated into the Latin language at a certain time, in a certain place and by a certain people. Not only was it translated, it was cobbled together from many separate items in different languages, from diverse lands and eras. Effectively, "The Bible" was created, by selecting and editing certain scriptures in certain ways. Had some decisions been made differently, we could have ended up with a completely different bible, and some completely different religions as well. But as it is, the creation process of this book was full of opportunities for things to go wrong. The decision to produce a single book may have been a mistake in itself.

Or maybe I just had a crazy dream like John lol. Seriously though, I'm pretty sure I read that stuff.

      Sometimes that kind of memory is given to you by a messenger. That's what your memory sounds like. It's confusing to explain. People are shown things, they know they saw it or heard it or whatever but can't exactly remember how. Dream visions are cool too. You have to be careful about who the messenger is though. The fallen angels did this to me as a child.
      I saw truth through their eyes. It's not meant for humans to understand. I have biblical strength nightmares coming true these days and its not the way I expected at all. Like the giants that would chase me. I was scared sh.. to fall asleep every single night. It's real but I'm not going to be chased like they wanted me to think.

      The Gnostic gospels are a different group of books which were excluded because they were, in fact, the secret property of certain christian groups. They weren't included in the Bible because they weren't common knowledge.

    • @rafexrafexowski4754
      @rafexrafexowski4754 Год назад +5

      When we're talking about the Old Testament apocrypha, we have a bit of a problem. The person in the video is using wrong terminology, the books like Tobit, Judith and 1 and 2 Maccabees were in the Bible since 300 BC, but Luther thought they were made up stories, so protestants don't have them, but both the catholic and orthodox churches treat them like any other books. That's why they are called deuterocanonical books, not apocrypha. The real Old Testament apocrypha like Enoch or Jubilees are just books written by Bible scholars that were never really aiming to be in the Bible, they were just interesting teachings claiming to be written by some important Old Testament character to be more popular. So those were either obviously not trying to be in the Bible or they were gotten rid of by Luther.
      When it comes to New Testament apocrypha, the great majority are already too new to be in the Bible, being fifth-or-more-hand accounts of Jesus's life. Out of these you have those that simply collect tradition of questionable origin (Gospel of Thomas, Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew, Acts of Peter), those that are made up "fanfiction" (Acts of Paul and Thecla, Infancy Gospel of James, Questions of Bartholomew) and those made up by gnostics (Gospel of Philip, Gospel of Mary, Gospel of Judas) that all follow a single theme: a person Jesus knew is told the "actual truth" by him, the apostles don't believe them and so the gnostics are better because all of Jesus's teachings were fake and only that one person was told the truth and only they know it. They are so obviously fake it's absurd. None of those three types of New Testament apocrypha were trustworthy enough to be put in the Bible. And then there are just some letters by early scholars and popes that easily could have been in the Bible but people just decided that they were just written too late. Nothing controversial about them, they just had to draw the line somewhere. So no, no books were excluded because christians didn't like them.

    Welcome to factsverse, today were going to be talking about books that didn't make it into the Bible.
    When you read the Bible you might think you're seeing everything but there are just some books that didn't make the cut.

    I've just stumbled across your channel. I'm not entirely sure how. LOL RUclips is funny that way. But I wanted to thank you. This is exactly the kind of study I wanted to do when I was young, back before I gave up thoughts of the seminary to become a heathen. Reaching both into the original texts instead of our modern (mis)translations, as well as exciting new discoveries back then like the Dead Sea Scrolls and the books we hadn't heard about in mainstream, there was a lot to find fascinating for a teen diving deep enough to question everything about life, faith included, which started my research into all religions, not just Christianity. So this channel is both heart-warming nostalgia and just as intriguing today. Thanks! I wish more scholars would delve deep into these origins. Religion is a lot more interesting than churches give it credit for. LOL

      It might sound strange, but the Wikipedia articles are actually very thorough with the subject -- for example, the page for the Great Schism of 1054 (Catholic-Orthodox) is longer than the one for Hitler.
      Keep in mind that every source you read will be biased in some way. It sounds like you're probably Protestant -- but most of the (reliable) sources for early Christianity are Catholic or Orthodox. Secular history can only get you so far since there's an unbroken tradition of writings passed on from the Apostles to the current Pope and Patriarchs. Those Church Fathers -- Ignatius of Antioch, Clement of Rome, Polycarp, Irenaeus, Chrysostom, Augustine -- are theologians in their own right and (in my opinion) should be at least respected by all denominations. If you've read the New Testament already, I'd recommend starting here if you want to learn about the Early Church (until 120AD):
      List of Church Fathers: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_Fathers
      The Didache (early Christian writing, ~60AD): www.earlychristianwritings.com/didache.html
      Portal for writings of the Church Fathers (Catholic source, some Protestant ones available for sale under the name "ante-Nicene fathers" but it's basically the same): www.newadvent.org/fathers/
      From there, you can Ctrl+F the seven epistles of Ignatius of Antioch (early 2nd century), Clement of Rome's First Epistle (70 or 96AD), Polycarp's Epistle to the Philippians (mid-2nd century), Irenaeus' Adversus Haereses (Against Heresies, 180AD), and Eusebius' Church History (310s AD). Just make sure before you read something to make sure that it's genuine (not apocryphal).
      If you're just looking for Protestant history, here's a TL;DR for all of the Wikipedia pages: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Christianity_major_branches.svg
      There are too many Protestant denominations to list in a RUclips comment, so for each individual history I'd recommend looking up each one independently. Also, I'm sorry to any Restorationists or "Church in the Wilderness Baptists" out there, but your church's founding date is probably in the 19th-20th centuries, not in the 1st. Only the Catholic and Orthodox Churches have that claim. You can't magically not have the Church from the end of the 1st century to whenever your group was founded.

    I see you have done this video on the Protestant Bible, not the earlier canon that the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches have as their core. This canon includes books such as Tobit, Judith, the addition of Bel and the Dragon to Daniel in chapter 14, etc. I just wanted to let everyone know not all of these are truly excluded from the Bible, it all depends on whether you have the Bible with the earlier canon, or the Bible with the canon following Martin Luther and other Protestant leaders removing some books from the official canon, subsequently moving them into a secondary canon called the Apocrypha, and eventually removing them altogether.
