I read Dark Matter last year and really enjoyed it. That short story collection is definitely on my tbr now.😁 One of the ones you described sounds similar to the short story We Can Remember It For You Wholesale by Philip K Dick. It's the story that inspired Total Recall.

Never Let Me Go was made into a superb movie starring Keira Knightly. I am 70 years old and the book is one of my very favorites.

My husband really enjoyed The Test as well and highly recommended I pick it up. We were both so surprised that it made the BooktubeSFF Awards shortlist. I'm definitely going to read that next month. I've seen some of these trippy types of things in short stories, like "Luna 600" by Stephanie Andrea Allen in the collection Black From the Future, or "The Truth of Fact, the Truth of Feeling" and "Anxiety is the Dizziness of Freedom" by Ted Chiang.
I really need to check out the Black From the Future collection- loved your video discussing it! And those two stories in Exhalation are amazing. I actually wanted to mentioned Truth of Fact in this video...but felt like I’ve been talking about Ted Chiang too much lately 😂

I loved The Test and Tell The Machine Good Night! I think Dark Matter was cool, but I was really turned off by how cheesy Jason sounded and generally one-dimensional Daniela is as the "princess in the castle" sort of "reward" for Jason. :/ If it weren't for that, I think I would've loved it a lot more.

As a reseller, I've kept, for my own collection, an onslaught of 60's and 70's Sci Fi and Speculative Fact books/magazines. It's amazing some of the information that is only available on paper. Thank you immensely for sharing.

Such a cool video idea! And great recommendations as well, I loved The Test and Never Let Me Go, and I recommend Dark Matter all the time at the bookstore I work at. If you're ever looking for more Black Mirror type reads you should check out Vigilance, by Robert Jackson Bennett, which is another novella-length dystopian/parable from Tor.
I totally agree with dark matter and never let me go! I haven’t read the rest but added quite a few to my goodreads! They sound interesting. I’ll be reading the test soon for the booktube SFF awards and I’m excited!

Yes!! It's a somewhat dark collection of stories but so good/ thought-provoking!
