Arthur C Clarke is my standard recommendation for those new to science fiction. His work, from short stories to novels, defines the genre's best aspects. Isaac Asimov is another name to seek out, any of his science fiction being wonderful.
More contemporary favorites include William Gibson, especially Neuromancer but really all his novels and stories, and Bruce Sterling, who can capture setting with breathtaking realism. They even collaborated on The Difference Engine, which introduced steampunk to a wider audience.
The Female Man by Ursula K Le Guin is superb, anything as by James Tiptree, Jr. (who was actually Dr. Alice B Sheldon), is the best you can get, and the wild, intense, compassionate work of Harlan Ellison in all its many shapes dazzles.

This is such an awesome list of books. What’s funny is that I don’t normally think of myself as a sci fi reader, but I’ve read and enjoyed most of these. Lists like this are so helpful not only for the awesome books but as a reminder that genre is fluid. Kindred, Fifth Season, Fahrenheit 451, and Hitchhiker’s Guide are favorites from these you mentioned. I’ve been recommending Exhalation to everyone since reading it last summer. I need more Ted Chiang in my life!

As amazing as Kindred is, the Parables duet (and you should read them back to back) BLEW MY MIND. It's almost as if Queen Octavia could see the future through a crystal ball or something... when i got back into reading about three years ago THE FIFTH SEASON was probably the first really big sci-fi/fantasy book i picked up and i think i was too overwhelmed by the world and its very unique lingo to fully apprecciate it.. i have yet to re-read it so i can finally continue with the series. therefore i'm not sure i would recommend it to a beginner to the genre 🤔
but thinking about it, the sci-fi books i enjoyed in the past couple of years are all a bit.. weird and different. i guess you just have to find specific sub-genres that work for you and that takes some time and most likely some books you don't like.
the first sci-fi book i fell in love with was AGENTS OF DREAMLAND by caitlín r. kiernan altough that's a very trippy story i'm not sure i would recommend to a sci-fi beginner either 😅 the same with STATION ELEVEN by emily st. john mandel which i adored but for someone going into this dystopia expecting an adventurous adrenaline-filled story would be disappointed. then there's LIGHT FROM OTHER STARS by erika swyler, one of my favourite reads from last year 🧡 and lastly the short story WAITING ON A BRIGHT MOON by j.y. yang.
oh, and i forgot to mention that i added THE UNDEFEATED by una mccormack to my radar shelf on goodreads, because older characters need to be in more stories 😊 thanks for the recommendation!
