- Good science fiction always makes us think. And great science fiction entertains the hell out of us while doing so. So here are the five best sci-fi books of recent times that I enjoyed.

I stumbled upon a gem of a sci fi trilogy at my local book store recently. Remembrance of Earth's Past by Chinese author Cixin Liu. I had no prior knowledge of the author or his masterpiece prior to buying it that day on a whim. After cruising through the first book, The Three Body Problem in a matter of days I immediately went back to the bookstore and bought the other two books in the series.
Cixin Lius' take on first contact with another intelligent species is refreshing in it's pragmatism and embrace of "hard" science fiction, while stretching it to it's limits. He explores what the long game of survival as a species might look like, and the ever changing and evolving challenges that come with that struggle. I found myself thinking about the books and it's characters long after I had finished the series, which for me is always a sign I'll read through it again eventually. :D
I loved the Three Body Problem!
Is the third book good? I've read the first 2.

Annihilation is a near-physical experience. The two follow-ups couldn‘t even come close to the power of this novel. I also highly enjoyed Borne, which has equally intense moments.

"Ancillary Justice" by Ann Leckie is amazing. Also the other two novels from the Imperial Radch series, "Ancillary Sword" and "Ancillary Mercy" are both at the same level. Tks for the recommendation.

Six Wakes seems quite similar to Gemini Man
I'm a big fantasy guy that wants to get into more scifi, but most synopsis online sound super boring. These books are what I've been looking for, murder mystery in space, yes please.
I just ordered Sleeping Giants, the first book of The Themis Files. The comparison to Crichton was enough to sell me.

My only real issue with Ready Player one is the world its set in. VR requires reasonable high tech and investment, so to have this take off in a poverty stricken ghetto makes no sense. The world has many poverty stricken ghettos around the world today and if we look at the ghetto’s I am familiar with in Bombay, there were few people playing any form of computer game. People were lucky if they had power.
If the world was more like Brave New World it would make more sense. A high tech world which simply had no need for large number of people, so working out how to entertainment them would be a major issue.
A much better “in a computer game story” is sword art on line, where the real world is more realistic although the method you enter the VR world more of a stretch.
My best novels from the 90’s are; The Time Ships by Baxter, Stephen, The Worthing Saga by Card Orson Scott, Their Masters War by Farren Mick and A Bridge of Years by Wilson Robert Charles
Annihilation is a rewrite of roadside picnic more or less. Try Blindsight, Mote in Gods Eye, Reap the whirlwind, Newtons Wake, Little Brother, Anathem (anything by Neal Stephenson) Pushing Ice, Rendezvous with Rama, Lord of Light, Gateway, A Canticle for Leibowitz, Spin, Dune, Foundation, Caves for Steel etc. Hyperion.

How did you leave out Thrawn? Arguably one of the greatest novels/trilogies ever written. Ascendency trilogy over the 2018 thrawn teilogy

Anything from Daniel Suarez. Excellent researched near futur sci fi. Most recent "Change Agent" and my most favorit is Daemon and Freedom. There is a great Google Talk from the Author on youtube.

Isn't anybody gonna talk about how one of the books is wrong? Instead of Ready Player one, he has All our Wrong Todays.
And it took 2 years for someone to notice it. We only noticed it after wrapping up the shooting day. :)

About six wakes, actually blockchain could help on how to access data, avoid corruption and addition on fresh memories to the "new bodies" and avoid all of them waking up together... ha!

Six Wakes can not primarily be about clones if they are digital backups. Then they are AI. You can not make a «Back-up» of a naturally born human. You can clone and keep cloning. Or you can possibly make a digital approximation and put it in a cloned body, but then itˋs an AI.
Ready Player One is awful imo. Literally just filled with references to every pop culture franchise, so that people can see their favourites being referenced and then they instantly think the book is amazing. If you want a good virtual reality scifi novel, then read Snow Crash.

Love science-fiction? I have just read a new novel from a
new writer called Mark Hall. The book is called The Epsilon Syndrome. It's a
sci-fi thriller that’s a mash-up of Minority Report and Altered Carbon. It is
set in the future, where the FBI utilise DNA so their agents can alter their appearance
to look like crime-lords, allowing them to go undercover easier and break the
criminal syndicates from the inside. It's fast-paced, packed with conspiracy, with
fabulous dialogue, futuristic scenes, with geeky well-thought out technology
and has a wicked twist at the end. I recommend it and you can check out more on

Neuroscience...unlikely to lose your accent if the language is learned after the brain reorganizes in adolescence. Accents are not a function of time but biological timing. 50 years with a second language and still an accent as an adult...5 years with a second language as a child...speaks as a native.

Seriously? you liked the Themis files? I really do not understand how come people praise it so much. It is a teenager book at best! I'd definitively recommend it to young people to get started in the genre. But for someone deep into SciFi, it is an extremely shallow book... I was very disappointed with it. I noted "Six Wakes" and "Anihilation" to check them out though, sound very interesting!
I enjoy reading deep sci-fi as well as nice stories that are easier to digest.

I'm a little over halfway through the audio version of "Six Wakes". First, authors should never self-narrate. (Isaac Asimov reading his stuff - Oi!) Mur Lafferty performs adequately, but it could have been better with a pro. Second, it's a decent enough story, but the central premise that places the characters together is ridiculous
~ 4:50 - "Spiritual SciFi like never before" ? Not even _Solaris_ or _Roadside Picnic_ ( _Stalker_ )?
Solaris is my favorite book ever that I re-read every year. I'd have never categorized it as spiritual science fiction.

BTW, thanks for recommending Neuvel - I just got the first in the series, read a bit and then got the rest. Unusual (although not unprecedented) format, perfectly executed. I think I will like it.

For less "video game" treatment of virtual worlds see Iain M. Banks and Greg Egan; for more "gamelike", _True Names_ by Vernor Vinge.
I have a hard time reading Egan's books. Maybe I'm not mature enough yet.

To be honest, his "post/trans human" novels, such as _Permutation City_ or _Diaspora_ are my least favorite. But his short fiction is superb, and I quite liked _Distress..._

Check out the POST-HUMAN series by David Simpson. Based on trans humanism. Very good series, ( based on 1-4, I haven’t read book 5 yet).
