Another tip to get yourself out of a reading slump : watch one of Hannah's recommendation videos. Her amazing recs and soothing voice will most definitely compel you to read something. This is a tried and tested method which works every time
I'm in such a lengthy reading slump that I'm starting to doubt myself - was I really into reading? What happened? WHY can't I read?! It has been SO long! I love reading, and I want to read! I'm just tired :( I wish to go back to the time when it wasn't so difficult. I hope this helps. Thanks Hannah
Oh my god same...i used to read sooo much but now even if i want to read I'm just not able to, i start a good book but end up ending just one page. Hope this helps🤞
Personally, my lengthy reading slump (lasted a couple of years) was due to being in a terrible place mentally. Most of the time I just couldn't muster up the energy to do any reading; and when I could, I would abandon the book at the first indication of a challenge for the protagonist. I just didn't have the mental energy to work through *any* sorta conflict/challenge, even the fictional ones. But once my mental health improved, I went right back to reading ... Personally, it helped me to give up my obsession with reading for a bit - I just accepted "yeah, I was a bookworm, I no longer am, and that's okay". I started listening to a lot of podcasts to fill my time and cut myself some slack about not reading.
I stopped reading for 6 years. I went from devouring 2 books a week to completely forgetting that reading was a hobby. The break coincided with university entrance exams, the university itself and the job search. Over the years I have been noticing that when my life undergoes important changes it's impossible for me to sit for hours and escape reading. I have come to the conclusion that when there're vital changes that affect my life, my mind feels the need to dedicate its effort and energy to adapt to the situation, because it is instinctive. The insecurity and uncertainty that changes produce, makes me unable to concentrate for hours on something that apparently isn't of vital importance. I don't know if it will be your case, but if it is, rest assured that when life calms down you will read again, because if it's something you like to do, you will find yourself returning to it eventually. There is no need to force it, maybe your attention is just focused in something that requires all your attention.
I used to be such a huge reader, but college and job stress killed it. Last week one of my friends was asking for book recommendations and I started going though a mental list of all the books I used to love. And then I had a stupid idea to write down a list of all the books that had an impact on my life. That was a huge trip down memory lane. I discovered that nearly every book I ever read is a part of me. I might have hated the character, disliked writing style, or straight up discarded books, but they're still a part of me. My personally is a hodge podge of my favorite characters. Now I'm trying to get back into what I love and just looking for some good reads.
okay i just found out abt the controversies surrounding the book. TJ Klune actually used the cultural genocide against indigenous children that occured in the 60s in Canada as his book's inspiration. I watched this video back in late September and picked up “The Starless Sea” per your recommendation and I just finished it last night. It is one of the best books I’ve ever read and I thank you so much for recommending it, I don’t think I’ll find anything as magical again. It changed my perspective on so many things! Happy new year!
A book about books recommendation: the dictionary of lost words by pip williams. A fictional retelling (with historically accurate details) of the making of the Oxford dictionary. It quickly became one of my favorite all time books. You’ve got a look into the English language, classism, feminism, romance, sexism. It was so well done!
Classic Hannah blessing us with her beauty, her voice and her incredible taste in books. Never lose your magic 💖💖💖 You go girl !! Edit : Wow so much likes o_o ! You guys are so sweet thank you so much 💖
Also The Silent Patient! I haven’t read in YEARS but I literally read this book in THREE DAYS - I read 100(ish) pages the first two days and then read 120 pages the third day. I could not put it down. Yes, I do have a lot of free time.
I liked that book, I've heard a lot of people say they saw the ending coming a mile away but I was totally blind sided and I enjoyed it a lot. I think I read it in a day.
Another non-fiction book I can recommend is Know My Name by Chanel Miller. It's written so that even non native english speakers (aka me) can understand it easily while it's also written beautifully and with so much heart. Her story is very hard to read about but also you won't be able to put it down ♡ And a graphic novel that has a lot of depth and character even in its first volume is Saga by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples.
I love how everyone has such different tastes! The Starless Sea took me a month to read and put me in one of the biggest reading slumps of my life!! The only reason I finished it was because I bought it full price and felt guilty dnfing
When I read The Night Circus it actually put me into a reading slump because it was not for me at all. And so Starless Sea was not even on my radar. But after your description of the book, I think I should put it on my TBR
I DNF’d The Night Circus the first time I tried reading it. But I just finished the audiobook and almost DNF’d it again. It got better by the end but I feel like it didn’t really wrap anything up & just left more questions.
I LOVED Daisy Jones and the Six! I read the physical copy and then listened to the audio book right after I finished reading it😂 it did put me into a bit of a reading slump just because that story felt so real and I wanted more. So I waited to read anything until I could get my hands on another Taylor Jenkins Reid book, which was Evelyn Hugo, and it had the same effect on me😂
I'm surprised that you didn't have short story collections as a category. Great to get out of a reading slump for the same reasons as poetry but, more accessible.
I've been in a two-year reading slump. I'm pretty sure Shadow of the Wind was somewhat responsible for the slump, but I love the way you talk about the books you love! The aliebn graphic novel is one of my favourites though, so cute and precious.
This video couldn’t have come at a more perfect time! 🙏🏻. But also just watching bookish videos helps me a lot to want to read more and get out of that slump
I LOVE Daisy Jones!! I want to watch the show where they play the songs... I read about it at the end of the book but I don't really watch TV so I have no idea if that happened yet or when it will happen..
I have literally just been searching "Books to get you out of a reading slump" and this video is perfect! Hannah has done it again and given us a brilliant video!
I loved that you made a fantasy category cause I’ve been looking for fantasy books recommendation but not many people like the type of books that I like so it’s really hard to find new books to read also I hope you can help me find more good fantasy, Adventure well mostly book with action and not about romance so I’m begging that you could help me
Loved this video and recommendations! The Shadow of the Wind is literally one of my favorite books ever!! If you like that book, then I highly suggest checking out "A Trip to the Stars" by Nicholas Christopher. I randomly got this when I bought one of those "Date With a Book" items and was shocked I fell in love with it as much as I did considering I had no idea what title I'd be getting.
I'm already reading a slump of that I'm starting many doubt of myself - It was really into incredible. What was happened there? I'm specially loved the character! He is a social worker! I love reading and It was continue! I'm enjoying this. (I think I am a part of this and I am deeply addicted to this) I miss it very much. Thanks Hannah......
Reading slumps are very common. An excellent way to get out of it is to read a wonderful book. It can be a natural mood enhancer. All The Light You Cannot See is a book that always boosts me out of my reading slumps.
I've heard so much about The House at the Cerulean Sea but never actually considered reading it until I've heard you speak about it. You really have a gift for this, I literally always leave your videos with my TBR so much longer than before.
The book that gets me out of a reading slump is a) a good first sentence or paragraph b) a likable, smart main character c) accessible, easy to understand d) lots of dialogue and e) minimal descriptions of the terrain. I know. Just give me a good mystery!! When I’m not in a slump I enjoy some magical realism or sci-fi.
Hey ..great channel !! Hope you are well . I need some suggestion . I bought few hard cover books but they were a bit pricy so then I started buying ebooks on Amazon and read it on my iPad using the kindle app but I noticed that I end up watching RUclips or Netflix when I use iPad . Now I order not get distracted I am thinking of purchasing kindle . Can you or anyone suggest what’s the best option, price and quality wise . Kindle ( which model ) or what ever other devices that are good and not so expensive . Thanks 🙏
I'm a huge fan. I've been in a reading slump for about a month now, but I'm off to the book store now that I have watched this. Thank you, Hannah. I admire you a lot and I rarely miss your videos.
I usually read 2-3 books and always fall into a slump for a few weeks. I did finally start listening to the audiobook for The Great Alone this week and am really enjoying it. I crochet 99% of the time so I’m grateful for audiobooks 😊
This video came at the perfect time. My depressive episode that I’m currently in is killing me and causing a major reading slump and I’m so anxious bc my first semester of college starts in 6 days. Some of these books are sitting on my shelves so I’m totally going to pick them up❤️❤️
I can also leave you my email if you would like to chat!!! Although even if you do want to, but are unable to, I get it too!!! Depression often makes people withdraw socially (in addition to everything feeling like it takes so much energy to do).
Im trying to get out of a very long reading slump cuz I’m taking AP Lit this year and then going to college for creative writing so this is much appreciated lol
Your message in the beginning of the video came at the perfect time for me, because I feel like I’ve forced myself to read so much lately that I’m enjoying it less - so I’m now realizing that I probably should take a short break or just slow down a bit.
I love graphic novels they help with my anxiety at night. The Anne of Green gables graphic novel is so cute. I love the Persepolis movie but I weirdly have yet to read the book. I did read “Embroideries” by the same author and it was so good!
Hannah - I don't mind adverts in the middle of a video but you must limit them to no more than 15 seconds a time. Adverts last longer than 30 seconds are a crime.
how did you know i needed this video???? I just came across a heartbreaking spoiler for Crooked kingdom and cannot bring myself to read it and hence in a reading slump since a week. just started listening to sadie and hopefully I can fall in love with another book AND bring myself to read Crooked kingdom as well. your videos are therapeutic from your voice alone tysm for posting
I saw you mention your Fredrik Backman books in another video, and I urge you to read them! I really love them, especially “Mormor hilser og sier unnskyld” (My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry). I think I read it for the first time when I was about 10 or eleven, and it’s still one of my favourite books. It’s about Elsa, a really smart 7-year old, and her crazy grandmother. After her grandmother pass away from cancer, (this is not a spoiler, don’t worry), Elsa is left a bunch of letters that she has to deliver to people in her grandmothers life. Her grandmother lived a really different life than most women did at the time. She worked a lot, and wasn’t that good of a mother. This lead to her having really complicated relationships with some people (for example Britt-Marie), while some of her other relationships were just amazingly wholesome. The two of them also had a kinda fantacy world together, which makes the book really interesting and beautiful. The only thing is that all the character names will probably be really weird for you as you’re not Scandinavian. (Ex. Alf, Elsa, Britt-Marie, Ove, Kent…). But other than that I think - and hope, you’ll like them.
You have to read the other books by Zafon! After I’ve finished the graveyard of the forbidden books series I went through a reading slump because it was just amazing!! You won’t regret it!
i think a big reason the starless sea pulled me out of my reading slump is because of the characters themselves, and their deep connection to stories and some specific stories, so it really made me think of and appreciate those books that i have deep connections to, so if anything it inspired me to reread a bunch of books that impacted me deeply
Rereading some of my favorite books has definitely helped me in the past so that is a great piece of advise. Also - I've never heard of The Weight of Feathers and I am very intrigued! ;)
Another great book about books is "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society". The movie was meh, but the book--ESPECIALLY the audiobook--was fantastic! As an epistolary novel, having a different reader for each letter-writer really added to the experience.
a book that had the same effect on me as The Starless Sea had on you was House of Leaves. it’s definitely not for everyone and can be confusing as well but woww i read it and came out of my YEARS long reading slump. its amazing what a book can do tbh
What helped me getting me out of my reading slump this summer was reading extraordinary real life survival stories. I just can't stop reading whenever I get to one of these books because its so fascinating. For example "Jungle" by Yossi Ghinsberg, he survivad in the amazonas all by himself in extreme conditions and there are some very mysterious happenings in the story aswell that still to this date has not been solved. I read one other about two female journalist getting lost in the Kalahari desert and survived on their wits all by themselves (but its not in english) My next read probably is gonna be one about a man that got lost for a long time at sea on his fishing boat.
Been in a reading slump for 6 years lol But I’m trying to get back to that. It was always my favorite hobby. Thank you. I will update this comment when I’m done reading any of these books.
Buzzing to see Sarah Kay on your list. Her spoken word version of "B" (If I should have a daughter) is the most beautiful poem I've ever heard and I immediately bought a copy of No Matter The Wreakage, after hearing it. She has a beautiful way with words.
Hey! Love your videos so much!! I am right now feeeling loads of anxiety and stress and your videos help so much! Best self care and you posted exactly when I needed your videos! Also I have been long in a reading slump, so thank you 💗.
there's just something magical about hannah and her voice that SHE MAKES ME READ EVERY BOOK SHE RECOMMENDS.

I'm slowly getting out of a reading slump but these recommendations are perfect. Thank you Hannah 😘😘😘😘😘
the House in the Cerulean Sea really is the most heart-warming book that gives you all the fuzzy feels 🥺🥺

okay i just found out abt the controversies surrounding the book. TJ Klune actually used the cultural genocide against indigenous children that occured in the 60s in Canada as his book's inspiration.
The book still is a great read but i thought that people should know more about the issue that still continues to affect indigenous people.
YOU NEED to read bear otter and the kid by TJ Klune (same author as Cerulean sea) the whole series is amazing
That doesn’t make it controversial. He based it off discrimination and genocide, that’s not a bad or controversial thing?

Hi Isabella, I am sending you so much love! 🦋✨ be gentle with yourself wherever you can. // I'm wishing you the best in your first semester! :3
I can also leave you my email if you would like to chat!!! Although even if you do want to, but are unable to, I get it too!!! Depression often makes people withdraw socially (in addition to everything feeling like it takes so much energy to do).
Perhaps do the backstory and what the Cerulean Sea is based off of, I bet you would not have recommended it. At least I hope not.
Im trying to get out of a very long reading slump cuz I’m taking AP Lit this year and then going to college for creative writing so this is much appreciated lol
* aggressively adds every book to Amazon wishlist *
Your message in the beginning of the video came at the perfect time for me, because I feel like I’ve forced myself to read so much lately that I’m enjoying it less - so I’m now realizing that I probably should take a short break or just slow down a bit.
OMGKFODHSJKS I SWEAR I SAW THIS A LIL BIT AGO ON MY RECOMMENDATIONS AND IDK WHY I DIDNT CLICK ON EARLIER BECAUSE I LOVVVVEEE YOUR VIDS 🎉💜
But other than that I think - and hope, you’ll like them.
i love how this glass company targets booktubers as if they thought we bookworms destroy our eyes, i'm kinda offended lol
Currently having the worst reading slump of my life. So i am here 😁
You have to read the other books by Zafon!
I’m slowly getting out of my six month reading slump and Persepolis helped! I’m also reading Heartstopper vol.1 and The Picture of Dorian Gray
Such a great video 👍🏻informative video
Rereading some of my favorite books has definitely helped me in the past so that is a great piece of advise. Also - I've never heard of The Weight of Feathers and I am very intrigued! ;)
Another great book about books is "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society". The movie was meh, but the book--ESPECIALLY the audiobook--was fantastic! As an epistolary novel, having a different reader for each letter-writer really added to the experience.
I loved The Starless Sea! Another book I always go back to to bust a slump is The History of Love, by Nicole Krauss.
Try Rare Gems by D.A. Murray Available on Amazon!
a book that had the same effect on me as The Starless Sea had on you was House of Leaves. it’s definitely not for everyone and can be confusing as well but woww i read it and came out of my YEARS long reading slump. its amazing what a book can do tbh
Just added this to my list!
Im for sure gonna buy the Starless Sea and Daisy Jones & the six😋
Shadow and Bone got me out of a slump I didn't even know I was in. I'm so addicted to reading again! Just bought The Starless Sea too :)
This might be a weird compliment but your look reminds me of a librarian living in a cottage in the woods
that's an amazing compliment and tbh the ultimate life goal
I need this as I am currently in my worst reading slump yet. Thank you Hannah! 😊
It's so cool that you're Iranian-American (cause I am too :))
i agree with the first tip! sometimes we need a break and do other things for a while 🥺💗 thank u for this and the recs, hannah! 🥰
Are the lights and the polka dot dress just a happy coincidence?
Hannah u know perfect timing..
I hv been in a reading slump for a longg time and this video is gonna help me soo much
💛💛💛 I hope it does!
@@AClockworkReader omggg u replied 🥺
i loved the house in the cerulean sea until i found out the idea behind the plot from the author.....aggravating is an understatement
girl where are you I miss you
Thank you for recommending spanish authors and books!!! Love from Spain!
Been in a reading slump for 6 years lol
But I’m trying to get back to that. It was always my favorite hobby.
Thank you. I will update this comment when I’m done reading any of these books.
The way you describe the books makes me fall in love with them , way before i even read them❤❤
☺️💕
@@AClockworkReader I second that! I was in love with The Night Circus before I even read it!
They have a huge frame selection...yes those frames are huge. Lol
In the dream house was such a well written heartbreaking book, definitely helped me out of a slump
Hannah is SO magical and I already feel like I'm already out of my reading slumber ;)))
How do you always post the exact videos I need?! Thank you sm ly
I'm just getting out of a slump myself, I started rereading my all time favorite series and it's been helping. Such an underrated gem.
Buzzing to see Sarah Kay on your list. Her spoken word version of "B" (If I should have a daughter) is the most beautiful poem I've ever heard and I immediately bought a copy of No Matter The Wreakage, after hearing it. She has a beautiful way with words.
Shadow of the wind is my least favourite book of all time. It will ruin your slump further.
Hey! Love your videos so much!! I am right now feeeling loads of anxiety and stress and your videos help so much! Best self care and you posted exactly when I needed your videos! Also I have been long in a reading slump, so thank you 💗.
