He is considered an important and influential composer and his music categorized as Impressionist or Atonal. But the trend inside "educated" music circles in Europe at his time was exactly to innovate and move beyond Classic and Romantic styles. He certainly went through the basics at Scola Cantorum, the religious counterpart of the liberal Conservatoire de Paris. Some of his compositions developed following traditional rules can hardly be regarded as pop or vulgar, but good examples of the pre-classic and classic like music.
