@@Flufux I thought that too, but this actually makes a lot more sense. "That's not Spanish" because the pronunciation wasn't on point actually seems too harsh for Luz.
I have a theory that the previous golden guard was more than just a mentor to him. Darius was a jerk to Hunter before because he seemed like such a pale imitation, but after Hunter stood up to him in Any Sport, Darius started seeing him as the son they never had. That’s why he’s so protective now
@@EliDraconis "Darius was a jerk to Hunter before because he seemed like such a pale imitation..." Imitation or not, it doesn't matter. Hunter is a child and Darius is an adult. Hunter was in an abusive situation with Belos and looked up to Belos, understandably so and Belos encouraged Hunter to act the way he did as the Golden Guard. Nepotism is supposed to improve a person's life, Hunter's life was not good as the Golden Guard and it's not just because of Belos. Darius assuming the worst of Hunter before "Any Sport in A Storm" contributed the problem not the solution. Regardless of the circumstances, it would have cost nothing on Darius' part to be kind to Hunter. Not after it was convenient for Darius to do so.
Belos has to be one of the rawest villains ever aired on Disney. Not just because of how absolutely evil he is, but because of how much he reflects the kind of monsters that actually exist (and existed in the past) in real life.
There is rarely something scarier than a villain who legitamately thinks they are a good person and can internally justify pure evil as a righteous cause.
Absolutely. Another show would have left it at fantasy allegory, but Dana just *actually* made her villain a imperialist dictator, violent religious/cultural oppression and all. There are people better placed than me to talk about it in detail, but I just love how brazen it is. (The combination of fantasy and clear righteous fury has something of Pratchett to it, now that I think of it)
Bravo to TOH for such a realistic reaction from Hunter. A full blown panic attack, right down to feeling choked by his cloak, something he previously sewed up and felt proud of. So good. Also big props for the maturity of Eda in the situation, immediately telling King and Hooty to give them space. It gave me chills to see Luz and Hunter’s mental health being taken so seriously/realistically.
I didn't take it as him feeling choked by it, tho that makes sense and was likely a part of it. I took it as him realizing what it meant to be the Golden Guard and that he couldn't/didn't want to be that anymore. A "get it away from me!" moment. But I'm sure he was feeling suffocated by his emotions, too, leading to him also feeling choked by his clothes.
reminds me of cold shock, like when the water's too cold. happened to me while I was wearing a choker, and I thought that it was the reason I couldn't breathe!
Luz in S1E14: "This mama is ready for trauma!" Everyone who watched this episode: "No you ain't!" On a sidenote: Lots of leaks and spoilers for S3E2 are flying around. Be careful!

the part where luz says “that wasn’t spanish” wasn’t about what king said, rather that king didn’t understand her walkie talkie language and assumed it was spanish, so he responded to it with spanish it took me ages to realise that’s what she meant 😭
I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR AN EXPLANATION FOR AGES BECAUSE MY FIRST LANGUAGE IS SPANISH AND I WAS LIKE, "BUT THAT IS SPANISH WHAT DO YOU MEAN". THANK YOU SO MUCH
(Not spoilers! Just my take) The "bubbling" in his skin was caused by the glyphs he carved into his own arm (elsewhere and elsewhen), his palisman-eating habits are to extend his own life and to take in their magical properties, he even cut his own ears to make them pointy--- like witches ears. He doesnt have a "condition", he's doing this to himself and calling it a "curse" to gain sympathy and to manipulate Hunter and "Hunter's lookalike". He was perfectly normal (physically, at least) before he decided that all witches must be destroyed through any means necessary. This was his own doing.
@@ParchmentScroll its implied through the paintings and such, but we dont get a clear timeline nor a proper explanation. Most of Philip's backstory is left to our interpretation and imagination (so far), and I wanted to point Mosco in the "probably canon" direction. She also was surprised when there were multiple GG masks in the hallway, that there were other Golden Guards... sometimes she needs a push in the right direction 😅
Honestly I’m pretty sure the glyphs and the bubbling were unrelated- everything that happened to him was the consequences of his own actions in eating the palismen.
Several paintings depicted inside Belos' mind hint at details of his past. These include: Philip with another child when he was young. This child's eyes are scribbled out in many portraits, but he resembles Hunter. Philip and his friend mimicking what seems like a mob behind them. Philip's friend carving him a wooden mask that resembles Belos'. The two friends playing in the woods, with Philip wearing his mask. Philip's friend eagerly approaching a witch, while Philip looks afraid in the background. Philip as a young adult, exploring the Boiling Isles. A now bearded Philip looking dismayed at his friend, holding hands with a witch, who appears to be pregnant. Philip carving glyphs onto his arm. Philip's friend finding him in a possessed-like state. Philip's friend hugging him in his possessed-like state. Philip's friend introducing his witch companion, with Philip holding a dagger behind his back. Philip in a duel with his friend. Philip's friend fallen, with Philip's reflection in the dagger beside him. The witch companion of Philip's friend chasing Philip away, with his friend's body lying in the foreground. Philip seems to be hit by a spell. Philip talking to some witches, while hiding his journal behind his back. Philip absorbing essence from a palisman, wearing his cracked childhood mask. Philip donning the first iteration of his Belos mask, signifying his new life as Belos. Belos cutting his ears to change their shape. The fates of the previous Golden Guards.
There was also a picture of Phillip looking at himself in a mirror, clutching his bleeding ear, the same dagger in front of him, also covered in his blood. This shows him mutilating himself to pass as a witch with pointed ears in the Boiling Isles. Yeah, The Owl House is a kids' show.
After the reveal this episode, I just kept thinking back to this line: Luz, S1 E14: "This mama is ready for trauma!" Crikey, that did not age well. I think we were all pretty traumatized, especially poor Hunter. This is the episode that truly changed the course and set the tone of the series.
This episode does so much to sell Belos as a villain. These two kids just randomly appear in his brain and he instantly schemes up a way to use it to his advantage and take out the Palisman Spirits that have probably been bothering him for literal centuries. Add to it that he was waiting the entire months Luz had been in the Demon Realm for the perfect opportunity to rub it in her face just how much she helped him get this far. Top tier Dickishry right there.
The message about how people are hesitant to stop believing someone or something they've been following for years is honestly one of the most relatable messages in the show tbh. I think many of us can relate in one way or another, no matter what topic we're talking about. Also this episode might be one of the best psychological horror episodes I've seen from any show. The rising tension as Hunter's beliefs slowly break away, and then the realization of just how much of a monster Belos, on both Hunter and Luz's parts.
Give it up for Zeno Robinson the voice actor for Hunter man he knocks it out of the park as Hunter especially this episode.. the ending scene of him hyperventilating too damn good
I love the slight Detail thag hunter always calls luz just human till he rescues her with the Plant glyth. Its the first time we hear him using her name
Crikey, what a crazy episode. I hope Hunter gets a hug. Poor boy definitely needs it. Obligatory fake spoiler: Flapjack isn't an ordinary Palisman. He's actually the collective consciousness of every previous Grimmwalker that has come before Hunter. The moment when he becomes a Mega-Grimmwalker and devours Belos was a wild one
You forgot the important part: Vee asked to eat some of Belos' with mayo on the side and Flapjack happily obliged (Magic with mayo tastes good to Vee, that's why she dips some of the Hexes Hold'em cards in mayo)
This broke my heart! I hate that this happened! Now I get a glimpse of what these reactors have to do to avoid spoilers. I'm trying to avoid everything for the next 2 wks. If I get a palisman spoil I will lose it!
@@minmom166 Honestly that's why I just immediately watched the leaked episode. Jacob mentioned about two brothers disappearing from the human world, they were lured away by a witch. It was the episode that Vee was rescued from Jacob by her Mum Camelia with help from her sister Luz.
First of all, Crikey! I was mad at first because Dana Terace refused to pay my psychiatrist bill after this episode, I only realized later that she had SO MUCH WORSE in store
For everyone that’s told her to stop pausing, can you agree this episode is the only time where pausing for background details is acceptable and adds to the experience? Also in terms of minor corrections and bonus details with the background images, Belos didn’t have a pre-existing condition with those blue eyes, nothing else will be mentioned but watch out for when he fights Hooty As for bonus details, there’s several more photos that add small tidbits to how he fit in, the one I remember most is the one where he’s in pain looking in a mirror with his dagger and something floating in the water. The implication is that he cut his ears to resemble witch ears
I can't agree with that because there are so many *other* times when pausing for background details is acceptable and adds to the experience. It's something that needs done more often not less.
Fun fact, the original plan for this episode was to have Hunter cry twice! Once while Belos is telling him he's a grimwalker (which made it in, it's just very subtle) and then he was supposed to sob during his panic attack! Dana loves to traumatize this boy as you shall see
fun fact: in the episode any sport in a storm, hunter mentioned that he was a "half a witch" then in hunting palisman his reveals his name to be Hunter, my connection is, foreshadowing for hallow mind, by putting "half a witch" and Hunter together, I immediately figured out it was foreshadowing Belos's reveal to be a witch hunter, because when you take hunters name and put when he said he was a half witch together you get "Witch Hunter" correct me if I'm wrong
5:55 king thought Luz was speaking Spanish which is why he said in Spanish to speak slower. Luz was commenting on what she said and praising him for what he said.
A bit of a side thing, but back in your S2e7 reaction (Eda’s Requiem), there was a moment midway through when you noticed that the Abomination and Beastkeeping coven’s part of the banner was eroded/burned away. Now that that was pointed out, and you see here that Darius and “Abba-wolf 😂” are working with Raine, I can’t help but think that was a lot more foreshadowing than we initially thought
@@arrash4388 just they way he converted people from not believing in anything to the whole "will of the titan" it's very similar to how Christians converted Native Americans saying "will of god" plus his accent.
I am amazed at how much these cartoons are able to get away with through implications. This is maybe my favorite episode of the entire show (im probably biased but i think it's also just objectively very good in its pacing and storytelling) and solidified hunter as my favorite character from the show. i feel so bad for this poor kid. like finding out that your entire life was a lie, you've been following and working for a truly evil person, and that your only "family"/the person you look up to the most is not only absolutely horrible to you (implications of manipulation, physical and emotional abuse) but has also killed "you" multiple times before And will definitely do it again. not to mention the whole like. monstrous existence/not his own person Literally AND HIS NAME? HUNTER IS A TITLE. seeing his reaction was so upsetting, especially his very real panic attack at the end of the episode. really glad they went all in on belos being a villain and didn't redeem him this episode belos and the titan are absolutely like an allegory for a priest and a god
also we've seen at least two or three golden guards here if you pay attention to their outfits there are slight differences (like a jester collar thing) that i think are implying a different guard
Well he wasn't going to kill Hunter in this episode. Just resign him to a fat far worse than death without a second thought (literally). Darkly poetic he was nearly trapped in his subconscious forever
@@kiwiparfaits oh, you're 100%, it's just easy to forget how little he cares for Hunter, not even enough to truly hate him but to see him as something disposable. That look he gives Hunter in Hollow Mind looked more like disgust. When talking about Hunter to the Collector or after Kikimora captures Luz instead, it's not even with disdain, just as an inconvenience. When he told his guards to be on alert for him, he spun a narrative about him being a rebellious runaway teen so no one would ask further questions when he quietly disappeared. And of course, Hunter has a sigil as a failsafe. He was always meant to die before Belos left the human world behind him. There's just so much depravity to all of Belos's actions it never ceases to amaze me.
wow you caught the Belos palace of lies really fast, I didn't even realized that Luz touching the picture was a hint. but I gotta said I think you got the hooded figure wrong *the one with glasses is obviously lilith:* -she was already depicted as a shadow with glasses in Eda's memory so it's a callback -she knew how to fool Hooty, obviously because she is his best friend -she knew how to make potion, she was in the potion track after all and even cursed witches can still use potion magic *the taller one is harder to guess, but I'm thinking steve:* -he was already friend with lilith as seen when he came to her party (and wasn't sent by the emperor, that was Desplora's job) -as a member of the emperor's coven he can do all magic so abom magic is in his reportoire *and the small one is obviously tiny nose:* -she look almost the same as when she was disguise as the author -she is a wild witch that was imprisonned in the conformatorium so it make sens she would fight against Belos
@@IceMetalPunkilith was in the emperor's coven, so she could also do all magic, including bard magic. And we also know that bard magic can be done despite the curse.
@@bjp4869 I figured the implication was that any bard magic she tried would always end up corrupted. Otherwise it seems weird that she keeps talking about having no magic if she could still use short bard spells to her advantage.
Hunter says he read a lot about the mind scape... but as he sees more and more about the truth he doubts his own expertise rather than excepting its, it's a quite sad statement about his self worth
I didn't see it as a statement about his self worth. Rather, it's a statement about confirmation bias and rationalization. The things he saw in Belos's memories can't be true if Belos is a good person worth following. And like King said, no one ever wants to believe they spent their entire life following the wrong person. So rather than dismiss his own beliefs about Belos's goodness, he chooses to dismiss what he saw as being inaccurate, which can only happen if what he knows about mindscapes -- that they're true depictions of events -- is wrong.
6:53 I’m so glad I’m not the only one who made this connection! I rarely see people talk about this when reacting, or in general. Super interesting 7:57 And King explains exactly why people are okay blindly following something. How I love this show
Wee Lass Reacts: "I get that we're human and people make mistakes but we're beyond that" You're right about that. There's something my high school English teacher once told me that still rings true today: "Make a mistake once, it's a mistake. Do the same one twice, it's a choice" And she was right, whether I wanted to hear it or not
6:15 This remind me of the farmers that stop using wild plants and use actual insect repelant because it was easier to use and it was "more" affective. But as a side effect their plants got smaller and less flavored
The collector is actually Eda and Raines child that was created using bard magic when they were younger. The collector then fell into a time pool and ended up in the distant past.
(At 13:48) it's obvious why it's not preserved in there, no leaves, and everything looks wilted. Belos is so heartless… _THIS_ kind of proves he's dead inside.
Ah, ready for some more trauma to start the weekend. By the way, about the "That wasn't Spanish" comment by Luz at the beginning... she meant her own "Echo Delta Alpha", and King seems to have thought that was Spanish, so he responed in kind. He actually pretty much nailed it tho
Woah, that was a really good call on the memories not being real because she couldn't enter them! You caught on super quick! I was also a HP and JKR fan. Man, she really let us down.
Luz was saying the radio talk wasn't Spanish! I did the same thing with JK... destroyed me when I realized how bad of a person she actually was. It still upsets me. Can't wait for you to watch the next few episodes!!
Rowling, Whedon, and most recently (though less famously) the guy who created and maintains the most popular Stable Diffusion repository... it's like people who create amazing things also have a higher incidence of dick-assery for some reason.
I realize I'm coming to this a year after you're past it, but had to drop a comment saying 'Pause it, if you want, that's part of the fun, watching you react to the lore and the hidden stuff' :) You're adorable and so is Hamish.
25:10 My personal theory Belos keeps making them because he's insane and egotistical. He keeps trying the same thing and expecting different results (definition of insanity) and he always thinks this time Hunter won't side with witches and demons.
The history behind this episode is semi-real as well. In 1647, five years after Connecticut made witchcraft a crime punishable by death, Hartford saw the first witch-related execution in colonial America when Alse Young was sent to the gallows. Luz is from Connecticut, and so is Dana. She probably heard about it in school.
When she grabbed Haymish at the start and said, "just in case," I was like, "girl you're gonna need him" lol. And then she put him away and I was like, "MISTAKE!!!" XD
i thought it was weird that they dedicated half an episode to The Collector showing off their Tech Deck collection, but it all comes together in the end
(At 26:04) six potions and three arrows? if I were to guess, I'd have to say the worst case scenario is obvious. He KNOWS which coven heads are going to stab him in the back.
(At 19:24) if you're assuming he left them for dead, then yes. Also, from the looks of the background it, looks like this is taking place on The Knee before it was left and ruins.
3:18 - *“Who could **_that_** be?”* Why, with glasses like that, it could only be… *_Young Lilith!!_* Yaaay, Lulu FTW! 5:36 - *“Wait, it **_wasn't_** Spanish?”* What _King_ said was Spanish, but Luz is referring to what _she_ had said earlier, when she started talking in CB radio jargon, which had prompted King to ask her to speak more slowly.
"Strong emotions materializing." So, the last time Luz was in Willow's mind, Willow's memories reflected on her past life with Amity before their friendship became strained and torn apart because of Amity's parents forcing her to find better people of their caliber. When Amity accidentally set the rest of Willow's photos on fire, it caused a change of Inner Willow's emotions into extreme anger. So, Belos's own strong emotions is eternal hatred towards witches with wild magic. He wanted them to suffer from the "betrayal" his brother did to him when Caleb was romantically inclined with Evelyn. His hatred is what manisfested into the kind of magic for creating the Draining Spell from the beginning. But that's just a theory.
Before watching this episode, we thought the long wait between S2E10 and S2E11 was unbearable; I'd argue the one week wait between this episode and the next one was even worse. YOU CAN'T JUST END AN EPISODE LIKE THAT AND EXPECT US TO BE OKAY DANA! Especially with all of the HEAVY reveals thrown at us this episode. My gosh, so much rapid fire information. But it was revealed so danged well. It's awesome, my favorite episode in this half of the season for sure. Also, regarding your question about Phillip seemingly being a shadow creature even while his brother was alive, I think by that point he was already "cursed", likely from messing around with glyphs and such. I always got the feeling he was trying to scare the Hunter look-alike or maybe the witch or something but instead the Hunter look-alike just hugged him and accepted him, condition and all. The image of the Hunter look-alike happily showing his witch partner was likely Phillip pretending to come over to make amends, but the dagger behind his back shows he was actually there to kill someone, likely the witch. The image of them fighting is probably the Hunter look-alike trying to stop Phillip after he found out and ultimately failing to do so, as shown by the image of his dead body on the floor.
27:41 This is where everything goes to heck 😭 And now when my heart is broken💔 they hit you again woth another twist 🍥 30:26 I never needed to hug a character so much in my life 😢
Aaaaaaaaah this episode is my favorite in the entire series! The amount of fun stuff that happens in this episode is just... aaaah amazing! Hunter is so great in this for sure. And Luz. I love this one so much. I always go back to this one when I want to watch The Owl House.
What a crazy episode, full of backstory, lore and just well bad things overall. When it came out, it once again broke everyone who watched it in mutliple ways, but also confirmed a lot of previous notions/theories. The whole telling a story using the background and paintings was so darn clever, and well done. This is one of my favorite episodes of the backhalf of season 2, purely due to how it was framed and done visual and storytelling wise. Emotion wise is completely different story, but lovely reaction to this episode! You'll be once again blown away when you see when Hunter confronts Belos and actually saves Flapjack during an intense chase scene against the other coven heads, minus Raine, Eberwolf and Dairus in the first episode of the next season.
whew, what an episode! definitely the turning point for the rest of the season, or better yet the series as a whole. as usual you continue to impress with your deduction skills, from theorizing almost immediately that the first mindscape is his 'hall of lies' to not trusting kid belos! hunter being a grimwalker... yeah. to go back and watch his firm belief in belos and his ways slowly dissipate as they enter each new memory pains me. the child has been through so much pain and suffering for nothing. he's been lied to, manipulated and hurt by this man- the only person he thought to be left of his family. what hits me the hardest during belos' reveal of being a witch hunter is the fact that he named hunter... HUNTER. the very thing he and hunter look-alike were. as if he was nothing more than a tool to further his messed up agenda. someone give the poor boy a soft blanket, hot cocoa and nothing but love and patience. he needs to rest. don't imagine what would've happened if raine, darius and abbawolf (lol) didn't send eda the potion, of what would've become of hunter and luz. it was a real close call that could've ended in disaster. as for luz... oh boy. the girl wanted nothing more than to help a fellow human. her innate need to be kind and trusting truly stabbed her in the back this time. this mama definitely was not ready for trauma. also, in s1 ep 17 luz tells eda "you can't reason with crazy" whilst in this episode, belos says the exact line back to her. damage 100 when she's already going through it. with regard to your question to belos' condition in the background paintings... it's believed that he was in the boiling isles for a while prior to killing hunter look-alike. he did something to himself he shouldn't have involving magic and since he's been dealing with that... goop. eugh. that's all i can say really. thank you so much for the video, getting more and more hyped the closer you get to the season finale!
As someone who also gave The Witch the benefit of a few too many doubts before June of 2020, I feel this, and am glad to hear that you're on the right side. I see the reactors watching HP in the year of someone's Lord 2022 like 👀
In the picture where "original hunter" holds hands with the witch, some people believe the witch actually looks pregnant (and I agree with that theory). Other than that you basically found everything. The Golden Guards in Belos' memories wear different clothes to show they're not the same. The lore unfolds a lot in this episode and you can make a lot of connections from there. You can link that with the story told in Yesterday's Lie that you may want to rewatch: "two brothers were lured into a realm of evil by a real witch, never to be seen again". Check Gravesfield's emblem and the picture in the book. Remember, it was Flapjack who chose Hunter. Anyway, that's what makes Belos one of the most evil (maybe *the* most evil? that's open to debate) vilain in Disney cartoons. He's not evil by nature like some other shows, he is by choice, as his brother's story shows that it was possible to make different choices. He also committed murder multiple times by choice, you could even say planification. It makes him basically a cold blood serial killer. You can even see in this episode he literately leaves witches freezing to death! Don't forget he also started a cult in which a lot of wild witches got petrified (season 1) and that the grimwalkers could be considered necromancy (necromancy is forbidden in Disney cartoons but well, it really looks like it...). In Elsewhere Elsewhen you could see that he just doesn't give a sh** about witches' lives.
You're almost to the point where Belos reveals his plan to invade Earth to steal all its sweet potatoes, triggering Luz's intense craving for them. Crikey, I can't believe I told you that!
Amazing to see you Mosco. It’s been a long rough day, and even if the episode wasn’t the happiest, seeing you on my recommended is just what I needed. Every time you post a video is an absolute joy. You really brightened my day. Thank you.
I love how Darius goes "wait, that's my angry blond kid!" He's already a better father figure than belos could ever be. But Darius mentioned that the previous golden guard was his mentor, he was probably a good friend to him, (or possibly a parental figure, depending on the age difference) so Darius had to know something was up. Idk if he knew the full extent of the grimwalker thing, but he definitely noticed that the new golden guard looks and sounds *exactly* like the previous one. Maybe that's part of the reason why Darius was initially cold towards Hunter, being a copy of a friend who was killed by Belos probably brought back painful memories. And that also may be part of the reason why Darius was willing to rebel in the first place.
My fav episode of the series. They managed to put so much into one episode and it’s got a lovely mood and cool aesthetic throughout. A serious gut punch and great voice acting. Luz and Hunter’s dynamic is also very sweet
Darius just exhales 'tired, overworked but protective dad'-energies and I am all here for it^^ Also poor Hunter needs all the hugs, running around on his own. He can't even sow!
It wasn't a language Luz used on the walkie. It was CB jargon. When talking on the CB radio or walkie talkies there terms they use that stand for other things like 10-4 means OK. What's you 20 means what's your location.
So this is the story that the memory paintings tell, plus info we know from 2x10: Philip and his brother lived in puritan Connecticut during the time of the witch trials. Philip’s older brother was a wood carver and made a version of the mask that Philip wears as Belos. While the adults went on witch hunts, the two boys played a witch hunting game together, though in one memory Philip is wearing his wooden deer mask and the brother is wearing a witch hat. Then one day when they’re teenagers/young adults the brothers encounter someone practicing real fire magic in the woods. The older brother looks intrigued while Philip looks scared. Soon Philip has made it to the Boiling Isles, presumably looking for his brother. He finds him holding hands with someone-almost certainly a witch, since the two brothers are the only known humans in the demon realm at that time-who appears to be pregnant! Philip is angry about this. Philip, who by now has been cursed, confronts his brother, but his brother isn’t scared of him and embraces him. He introduces Philip to someone, presumably the pregnant witch from earlier, and Philip is holding a jagged knife behind his back. They fight and the brother dies. Philip flees from a witch aiming a spell at him. Over the years Philip develops his Belos persona, and even cuts his own ears into points using the same jagged knife!

LEGIT you're so right :( he represents a LOT of people in history..... and modern day society....
Absolutely. Another show would have left it at fantasy allegory, but Dana just *actually* made her villain a imperialist dictator, violent religious/cultural oppression and all. There are people better placed than me to talk about it in detail, but I just love how brazen it is.
(The combination of fantasy and clear righteous fury has something of Pratchett to it, now that I think of it)
@Mia Nadeau it's more terrifying when you realize there are people in the presence like belos and some of them are world leaders.
@Mia Nadeau Hell, there are people walking around right NOW just like Belos. Their hatred just isn't focused on "witches"...

YES
FINALLY
SO MANY PEOPLE DIDNT TALK ABOUT THAT, I FELT LIKE THE ONLY ONE WHO NOTICED
the part where luz says “that wasn’t spanish” wasn’t about what king said, rather that king didn’t understand her walkie talkie language and assumed it was spanish, so he responded to it with spanish
it took me ages to realise that’s what she meant 😭
Yeah it's a lot easier to interpret if you know a bit of Spanish (so you know King was speaking it), otherwise the wording is ambiguous.
As, so that's what that was all about.
Makes a lot more sense than her judging his pronunciation so harshly.
Yea she was basically telling him I wasn’t talking in Spanish lol
I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR AN EXPLANATION FOR AGES BECAUSE MY FIRST LANGUAGE IS SPANISH AND I WAS LIKE, "BUT THAT IS SPANISH WHAT DO YOU MEAN". THANK YOU SO MUCH
(Not spoilers! Just my take)
The "bubbling" in his skin was caused by the glyphs he carved into his own arm (elsewhere and elsewhen), his palisman-eating habits are to extend his own life and to take in their magical properties, he even cut his own ears to make them pointy--- like witches ears.
I'm pretty sure that's canon - it's very heavily hinted at - but it's not confirmed.
@@Missed_V I never looked at the paintings myself just what was pointed out by others about the history of Philip and not-Humter
Honestly I’m pretty sure the glyphs and the bubbling were unrelated- everything that happened to him was the consequences of his own actions in eating the palismen.
Seems about right to me
BTW, I love your profile picture. I like Varian
Several paintings depicted inside Belos' mind hint at details of his past. These include:
Philip with another child when he was young.
Always cool to see someone reacting to this crazy episode🤣
I'm the first reply on a tomotasauce comment :D
Agreed 🤣
There was also a picture of Phillip looking at himself in a mirror, clutching his bleeding ear, the same dagger in front of him, also covered in his blood.
This shows him mutilating himself to pass as a witch with pointed ears in the Boiling Isles.
Yeah, The Owl House is a kids' show.
After the reveal this episode, I just kept thinking back to this line:
Luz, S1 E14: "This mama is ready for trauma!"
Crikey, that did not age well. I think we were all pretty traumatized, especially poor Hunter. This is the episode that truly changed the course and set the tone of the series.
So true. She wasn't ready for all this trauma. And remember how excited she was at the prospect of joining a Coven back in 'Convention'.
oh crikey she was not
@@alexkoder1982 Oh, Lord, you're right. That just makes it extra heartbreaking.
Give it up for Zeno Robinson the voice actor for Hunter man he knocks it out of the park as Hunter especially this episode.. the ending scene of him hyperventilating too damn good
Zeno has always been a top-tier voice actor
I love the slight Detail thag hunter always calls luz just human till he rescues her with the Plant glyth. Its the first time we hear him using her name
Crikey, what a crazy episode. I hope Hunter gets a hug. Poor boy definitely needs it.
Obligatory fake spoiler: Flapjack isn't an ordinary Palisman. He's actually the collective consciousness of every previous Grimmwalker that has come before Hunter. The moment when he becomes a Mega-Grimmwalker and devours Belos was a wild one
You can’t say it’s fake, that defeats the purpose. The purpose is to make it difficult to tell what’s fake and what isn’t
@@BelBelle468 that's why I always say it's fake even when I give out real spoilers. The whole point is to muddy the waters

You forgot the important part: Vee asked to eat some of Belos' with mayo on the side and Flapjack happily obliged (Magic with mayo tastes good to Vee, that's why she dips some of the Hexes Hold'em cards in mayo)
Be extra wary of spoilers! The most recent episode leaked 2-weeks early and the info is spreading very quickly.

Jacob mentioned about two brothers disappearing from the human world, they were lured away by a witch. It was the episode that Vee was rescued from Jacob by her Mum Camelia with help from her sister Luz.
Man, this episode is so great every time I see it. But I didn’t notice Darius’s reaction to Hooty describing Hunter before- that’s cute at least
“It’s just gonna be another goofy episode with silly jokes for the kids!”
-Belos while absolutely traumatizing Luz and Hunter
First of all, Crikey!
I was mad at first because Dana Terace refused to pay
my psychiatrist bill after this episode, I only realized later that she had SO MUCH WORSE in store
I was actually so surprised earlier in the season how quickly you caught on that Hunter also has Pink eyes. I'm like "she knowwwwwwsss"
For everyone that’s told her to stop pausing, can you agree this episode is the only time where pausing for background details is acceptable and adds to the experience?
Also in terms of minor corrections and bonus details with the background images, Belos didn’t have a pre-existing condition with those blue eyes, nothing else will be mentioned but watch out for when he fights Hooty
As for bonus details, there’s several more photos that add small tidbits to how he fit in, the one I remember most is the one where he’s in pain looking in a mirror with his dagger and something floating in the water. The implication is that he cut his ears to resemble witch ears
I always enjoy it, because it gives her time to react and comment on impactful scene's without risking missing things following said scene.
I can't agree with that because there are so many *other* times when pausing for background details is acceptable and adds to the experience. It's something that needs done more often not less.
nobody told her to stop, she stopped herself because she didnt want to have to edit long vids
Fun fact, the original plan for this episode was to have Hunter cry twice! Once while Belos is telling him he's a grimwalker (which made it in, it's just very subtle) and then he was supposed to sob during his panic attack! Dana loves to traumatize this boy as you shall see
Man, I love fun fact haha, such joy! hoho!
*dies*
Oh also Luz was going to cry by the end as well too!
fun fact: in the episode any sport in a storm, hunter mentioned that he was a "half a witch" then in hunting palisman his reveals his name to be Hunter, my connection is, foreshadowing for hallow mind, by putting "half a witch" and Hunter together, I immediately figured out it was foreshadowing Belos's reveal to be a witch hunter, because when you take hunters name and put when he said he was a half witch together you get "Witch Hunter"
correct me if I'm wrong
Can't wait for the episode where Hunter makes himself a bunch of grimwalker brothers and sisters and forms his own grudgeby team
27:29
Moscow: How would you feel in that moment.
Me: You'd wanna get your hands on the nearest sharp object.

I love how throughout the series it shows hints that belos was a puritan from the 1600's.
Can you name the examples please? I'm using my last braincell writing this and I can't remember the hints, but would love to know. Thanks!
HUNTER IS A TITLE. seeing his reaction was so upsetting, especially his very real panic attack at the end of the episode.
really glad they went all in on belos being a villain and didn't redeem him this episode
belos and the titan are absolutely like an allegory for a priest and a god
also we've seen at least two or three golden guards here if you pay attention to their outfits there are slight differences (like a jester collar thing) that i think are implying a different guard
Well he wasn't going to kill Hunter in this episode. Just resign him to a fat far worse than death without a second thought (literally). Darkly poetic he was nearly trapped in his subconscious forever
@@thecheck968 fair but after this episode i doubt he'd hesitate to kill hunter that's moreso what i meant
It's a good thing the next episode is the most chill, slice of life episode. King even gets to play catch.
wow you caught the Belos palace of lies really fast, I didn't even realized that Luz touching the picture was a hint.
but I gotta said I think you got the hooded figure wrong
*the one with glasses is obviously lilith:*
-she was already depicted as a shadow with glasses in Eda's memory so it's a callback
-she knew how to fool Hooty, obviously because she is his best friend
-she knew how to make potion, she was in the potion track after all and even cursed witches can still use potion magic
*the taller one is harder to guess, but I'm thinking steve:*
-he was already friend with lilith as seen when he came to her party (and wasn't sent by the emperor, that was Desplora's job)
-as a member of the emperor's coven he can do all magic so abom magic is in his reportoire
*and the small one is obviously tiny nose:*
-she look almost the same as when she was disguise as the author
-she is a wild witch that was imprisonned in the conformatorium so it make sens she would fight against Belos
It can't be Lilith. The figure did bard magic by playing the recorder/clarinet/whatever.
@@IceMetalPunkilith was in the emperor's coven, so she could also do all magic, including bard magic. And we also know that bard magic can be done despite the curse.
@@bjp4869 No, it can't. When Eda tried to do bard magic, the curse made it corrupt everything it touched, remember?
@@IceMetalPunk only when she did it for a longer time, the first few seconds nothing happened, and this was only a few seconds long.
Super interesting
7:57 And King explains exactly why people are okay blindly following something. How I love this show

This episode is insane, it's probably my favourite.
Did you realize? The city that Belos destroyed it's the same one in ruins at the Knee.

This remind me of the farmers that stop using wild plants and use actual insect repelant because it was easier to use and it was "more" affective.

25:10 My personal theory Belos keeps making them because he's insane and egotistical. He keeps trying the same thing and expecting different results (definition of insanity) and he always thinks this time Hunter won't side with witches and demons.
13:21 you laugh but that was actually a part of Hunter’s trauma response as a result of his PTSD from living with Belos
Wait I never realized that-
FOR REAL THATS WHAT IM SAYINGG ❕❕❕❕
The history behind this episode is semi-real as well. In 1647, five years after Connecticut made witchcraft a crime punishable by death, Hartford saw the first witch-related execution in colonial America when Alse Young was sent to the gallows.
Luz is from Connecticut, and so is Dana. She probably heard about it in school.
When she grabbed Haymish at the start and said, "just in case," I was like, "girl you're gonna need him" lol.
And then she put him away and I was like, "MISTAKE!!!" XD
15:07 well this was foreshadowing at its finest

(At 26:04) six potions and three arrows? if I were to guess, I'd have to say the worst case scenario is obvious. He KNOWS which coven heads are going to stab him in the back.
(At 19:24) if you're assuming he left them for dead, then yes. Also, from the looks of the background it, looks like this is taking place on The Knee before it was left and ruins.

A GAME THEORY

Eda summarized this episode perfectly in a single line. "How in the world did you- no, we don't have time for that."
Man what a happy cheerful and totally none trauma filled kids show. so happy nothing ever bad happening ever....EVER😃
King did speak Spanish. Luz was saying that SHE hadn't been speaking Spanish, like King assumed when he asked her (in Spanish) to speak slower 😂
Surprised no one has mentioned that his name was also a give away. Philip Wittebane. Witch-Bane.
Thank you for this! I've been so bummed about s3 e2 being leaked this reaction was just what I needed :)
whew, what an episode! definitely the turning point for the rest of the season, or better yet the series as a whole. as usual you continue to impress with your deduction skills, from theorizing almost immediately that the first mindscape is his 'hall of lies' to not trusting kid belos!
hunter being a grimwalker... yeah. to go back and watch his firm belief in belos and his ways slowly dissipate as they enter each new memory pains me. the child has been through so much pain and suffering for nothing. he's been lied to, manipulated and hurt by this man- the only person he thought to be left of his family. what hits me the hardest during belos' reveal of being a witch hunter is the fact that he named hunter... HUNTER. the very thing he and hunter look-alike were. as if he was nothing more than a tool to further his messed up agenda. someone give the poor boy a soft blanket, hot cocoa and nothing but love and patience. he needs to rest.
don't imagine what would've happened if raine, darius and abbawolf (lol) didn't send eda the potion, of what would've become of hunter and luz. it was a real close call that could've ended in disaster.
as for luz... oh boy. the girl wanted nothing more than to help a fellow human. her innate need to be kind and trusting truly stabbed her in the back this time. this mama definitely was not ready for trauma. also, in s1 ep 17 luz tells eda "you can't reason with crazy" whilst in this episode, belos says the exact line back to her. damage 100 when she's already going through it.
with regard to your question to belos' condition in the background paintings... it's believed that he was in the boiling isles for a while prior to killing hunter look-alike. he did something to himself he shouldn't have involving magic and since he's been dealing with that... goop. eugh. that's all i can say really.
thank you so much for the video, getting more and more hyped the closer you get to the season finale!
"Oh no Eda's Jacket!!
Hunter to, but Eda's Jacket!"
You're almost to the point where Belos reveals his plan to invade Earth to steal all its sweet potatoes, triggering Luz's intense craving for them. Crikey, I can't believe I told you that!
“Baby Belos” is probably the funniest thing I’ve heard today.
Amazing to see you Mosco. It’s been a long rough day, and even if the episode wasn’t the happiest, seeing you on my recommended is just what I needed. Every time you post a video is an absolute joy. You really brightened my day. Thank you.
I love how Darius goes "wait, that's my angry blond kid!"
He's already a better father figure than belos could ever be.
Welcome to the real Owl house mate, where every character needs a decade or two worth of therapy
“Can’t reason with crazy.” Well that’s a callback I didn’t expect. Luz said the same thing in Wing It Like Witches to Eda.
My fav episode of the series. They managed to put so much into one episode and it’s got a lovely mood and cool aesthetic throughout. A serious gut punch and great voice acting.
Luz and Hunter’s dynamic is also very sweet
Darius just exhales 'tired, overworked but protective dad'-energies and I am all here for it^^
Also poor Hunter needs all the hugs, running around on his own. He can't even sow!
Mosco: 😡 “That better not been foreshadowing…! For Flapjack!”
28:05 she's in sync with luz here lol
It wasn't a language Luz used on the walkie. It was CB jargon. When talking on the CB radio or walkie talkies there terms they use that stand for other things like 10-4 means OK. What's you 20 means what's your location.
One of my favs
Raine is a SMOOTH Operator. The flower used to deliver the Mindscape Potion are Pink Tulips, which represent a "perfect lover".
So this is the story that the memory paintings tell, plus info we know from 2x10:
Philip and his brother lived in puritan Connecticut during the time of the witch trials.
