Man, the contrast between the driving percussion and the richness of the cello really takes the piece to a whole other level. Fantastic writing and musicianship.
This music has so much movement, texture, and layering - every player masterfully owning their parts. They’re not merely playing the song, but feeling it, translating it into heart-felt expression - the vision is in full fruition!! 🫶🤗💕
Oh my goodness! This music makes my soul dance! I could see some mythical creature running through the woods, giggling and avoiding the humans. This is really beautiful! So expressive!
Hammered dulcimer is definitely up there with the greats. This is a beautiful piece and transports you to other dimensions where stress, anxiety and daily grind doesn't exist. Thank you for creating such a fabulous medication!
Deb'n'Air Wilson Thank you, Deb’n’Air! Wow, thanks for the thoughtful and insightful comment. I’m glad you enjoy the hammered dulcimer. It is one the greatest joys of my life, and it is an honor to share it with you. Please stay in touch, ok? Best, Joshua
+yarkshry Yup! Yes, the cello is part of the arrangement--without it there are holes in the music you want filled. Glad you got to hear the completed version!
This is fabulous! I love the combination of sounds of the percussionist's and the cello... This would be great as a soundtrack in a movie!!! Where are the movie makers!
I love the format of seeing the musicians performing live. This would be a great group to hear in person, but this video presents the next best thing. The combination of instruments is wonderful.
Beautiful, mesmerizing. Dancing among the sunlit trees until the shadows form in the evening breeze. Music has a place within the heart to unite oneself with our Creator.
Joy Lester So glad you enjoyed it, Joy! Thanks for watching and sharing your heart for music. Please, stay connected! :-) JoshuaMessick.com All the best, Joshua
There are few things better than experiencing someone doing music they are passionate about. Hammered dulcimer is a mesmerizing instrument, and it's a joy to both hear and watch it played at this level. Thank you for this.
Jon Skullard Thank you, Jon! Thanks for watching and commenting! :) I fell in love with the hammered dulcimer when I was 4 and it has held me captive ever since.
I haven't heard someone play the hammered dulcimer this well since living in VT with a good friend John Drury. it has been many years. You are truly amazing. Thank you, thank you. Grace
It's funny. The title is Woodland Dance, but I always picture something like a background music for the drifting sands of a desert with people traveling by horseback or something like that when I listen to it.
I think the desert vibe comes from the legatos on the cello. But still every person imagines different things and that's why instrumental music is so cool
I lived in asheville, but I too got a desert image, primarily b/c the dulcimer had the santoor playing style going on, essentially same instrument. Plus the percussion.
This is a rare gem! This piece is well arranged, each instruments melody line are amazing! The sound is pleasing and I like the visual it feels professional!
this is such a dramatically beautiful song....i would love to have an extended version of it, it is so interesting of a composition, so many layers!!! wonderful !
The ATMOSPHERE!!! the atmosphere is so magical and one can imagine so many things by listening to this! I hope you still compose songs because what you do is so different and unique
Thank you, Vasili! What a thoughtful, encouraging comment. I appreciate it. I do still compose! "Orbit" is new: ruclips.net/video/3h6zSZ7XsCw/видео.html I've got some other new stuff in development right now. Please stay connected! I'd love to have you be a regular on this channel. Gratefully yours, Joshua
I find myself coming back to this song at least every other day. I put it into my ambient D&D playlist and every time my players ask what it is or just point it out. Really, really well done, thank you for making this.
Wow! I'm blown away. I play mandolin but experiment with other instruments. I just bought a hammered dulcimer and plan to teach myself. This video is really motivating! Love those bells as well...I may have to get a set of those. It was a privilege listening to this!
Some guy downtown where I live was playing a hammered dulcimer and I had no clue what it was at first so I asked him and then forgot. Couple months later, 2 days ago, I see the same guy and ask him again and remember. First thing I do after is come home and google to find music, then I stumble across your channel and wow. This music is like nothing I've ever heard and I've been in such a need of new music. Sorry this is so long but thank you very much for the new musical experience and taking time to read this 😥 it's beautiful and inspiring me to write again. ~nya
I had never heard a Hammered Dulcimer till I heard this and I absolutely love this instrument and the whole ensemble of the cello and other instruments that were played with it. You should do more fantasy themed music like this.
Thank you!! It's inspiring to have the opportunity to introduce the hammered dulcimer to folks for the first time. Very glad you enjoyed it :-) I just released my 7th album, and there is always new music on the horizon. Please stay in touch, OK? joshuamessick.com/
Susan Cass Glad you enjoyed it, Susan! Thanks for sharing the story about your dad. Music makes for a wonderful time with the family. Thanks for watching and commenting :)
Joshua you have "Delivered" once again! To me, while listening, I imagined a sunrise in the Blue Ridge! Thank you for such a wonderful music adventure while I listened just now!
I would love to hear you make more works for the dulcimer that integrates your fingers like you did with Woodland Dance. It creates a whole new layer of enchantment and resonates with my heart beautifully.
I love this because i clicked it expecting something quick paced but relaxing but was immediately hit with the anxiety of Music that plays during an intense final boss fight with 4 phases and a somber bittersweet epilogue
Thank you, Michael! ;-) This was a fun tune to compose and record. Loved playing with my friends-they’re the best. Once again, thx for participating on this channel. I appreciate you. Best, Joshua
This is incredible! I've heard a lot of dulcimer music, but nothing like this. Adding harp techniques in with the customer hammers added so much to the tone. I love how the cello and the bells were accented, and the drum kept everything moving. Stunning piece. Will definitely be investigating your music more.
Wow, Bethany! Thanks so much! It’s awesome you discovered my music and took the time to reach out. It was a blast to play this tune with James, River & Max - they are amazing. Please, stay connected. Your spins & comments are very appreciated.
THIS SONG HEALS MY SOUL!!!!!!!! thank you @Joshua Messick Hammered Dulcimer (and cello) is hands down my favorite istrument, and you play it so greatly. I'm serious this video has and still helps me thru very difficult times. And I want to thank you for post, sharing and caring.
Just great to see this piece in it's finished form. Awesome playing by all. Max adds a great bit of color and menace! Masterful bit of composing by Joshua.
+Joshua Messick (Hammered Dulcimer) 66 thumbs up and no thumbs down (as of the time I make this comment). That's a pretty nice indication of the quality here Joshua. Great job with the editing. It's a fun video to watch and listen to.
When i hear this, i picture a lone adventurer rushing through a dense forest, leaping over thick brambles and roots to an unknown destination with great urgency. The sun fades swiftly, and the formerly bright atmosphere melds to a hazy blue dusk. He must make it to his destination before the evening envelopes his land, though i'm not sure why. This is the image, story, and feeling I get when i hear this song, and it makes me want to know the story of this person, What is the reason for such urgency so deep into the forest? I love how emotional your music is, i'll always be a strong supporter of your work!
God the moment the cello hits the first time 1:03 , gives me absolute chills. Stunning track sir, followed you on Spotify and subbed here on YT. Please keep up the amazing work you do. ;u; Also the song is so good that I hope you don't mind me using it as a 'theme song' of sorts for a Legend of Zelda character of mine. (no profit, just for fun)
I really needed to hear this song. I am so moved, i cried, i smiled, you all did so great. this song is so pure, raw and genuine. instrumentals are my favorite. Joshua, your the best hammer dulcimer ive ever heard. as stated, amazing. i listened to it over 6times in a row. i am going to totally be a patron, i love what i hear.
I just stumbled across joash today on you tube .the guy is amazing. He is very gifted. I have shared his music already with my friends by eay of phone messages. They loved him. He is a special person. Gods gift to the world. Thank you.
Thank you so much! I'm glad to hear you’re enjoying it-your kind words mean a lot! I just posted a solo version here: ruclips.net/video/DxjlnXkZSPM/видео.htmlfeature=shared

I know this was made 7 years ago but I just found your channel. Your music is absolutely incredible and I feel like it stirs the gypsy in my soul. Immensely gorgeous and captivating!
This group could put together a killer soundtrack for a fantasty game
Thanks, Dylan! That would be fun to do. I recently appeared on God of War Ragnarök, a fun fantasy game. It was an awesome experience!
I don't know how else to describe this other than Witcher music
Being a proud Welshman with Celtic blood flowing through my veins. I find this style of music captivating. It truly stirs the Celtic spirit within.
Awesome, Shaun! Thank you :-) You can preview the whole album here: www.joshuamessick.com/product/woodland-dance

This would be wonderful music for movies! Very moving the way you put all these elements together.
Beautiful sound. Came for the dulcimer, stayed for all of it. You and your team are fantastic musicians, bravo!

Thanks for watching!
Got the recommendation from a guy whilst playing a game and thoroughly enjoyed this amazing piece
Thank you!!
That cello was a great addition! Definitely feels more whole.
+yarkshry Yup! Yes, the cello is part of the arrangement--without it there are holes in the music you want filled. Glad you got to hear the completed version!
@@JoshuaMessick So are we. Excellent, thanks.
This is fabulous! I love the combination of sounds of the percussionist's and the cello... This would be great as a soundtrack in a movie!!! Where are the movie makers!
I'd be thrilled if this could be used as a movie soundtrack. Thanks for watching and listening!
The bells were a perfect touch to this piece.
Darius Ketchup Glad you enjoyed it! The bells are one of my favorite parts, too ;-) Mr. James Kylen really rocked that part.
The Cello is such magnificent touch, you would not expect it in a such percussive music but I cannot hear anything else fit this good
I love the format of seeing the musicians performing live. This would be a great group to hear in person, but this video presents the next best thing. The combination of instruments is wonderful.

And isn't that the beauty of music? It can transport you wherever your soul and imagination takes you ! ;-)
It reminds me of like a magical misty Viking forest or something
I love it!

Makes me think of the film Dune.
Hypnotic, guilty to press replay ! And you guys seem to enjoy so much playing this, please make more with this kind of band !
Thanks so much!
I see the ocean side...crashing waves, towering palm trees, distant village of villas lights up through the forests more inland from the beaches
Thanks for watching! Very glad you enjoyed it.
This is a rare gem! This piece is well arranged, each instruments melody line are amazing! The sound is pleasing and I like the visual it feels professional!

this is such a dramatically beautiful song....i would love to have an extended version of it, it is so interesting of a composition, so many layers!!! wonderful !
Aww, thank you!!
that was fantastic. I've always had a soft spot for the hammered dulcimer, but with the percussion and cello really make it magical piece of music.
This song, and each performance, is a purely mystical experience.
...I am in complete agreement...one of the best Hammered Dulcimer and Cello yet....then nuances are awesome!....

I just want to close my eyes and listen and shut the world out if only for a few minutes. It's so beautiful to hear. Peace out. ☮️
Thanks!!
I love it. The percussive elements of this fit well with the 'string' sound of the cello. Good mix of instruments. I'd love to hear more.
Thanks for listening! Glad you enjoyed it. Stay in touch!
Music calms my soul in times of social unrest. Sunday, in my house was a day to listen to operas. Thank you, Dad.
