I love this guy. He sounds like my Jazz Theory professor in College. It was frustrating at first listening to him but it wasn't until later that I realized he was the only one telling us the truth. Yes, I got a bachelor's degree in Jazz Guitar. I'm fine, though. I teach little kids music and it's been a real blessing for me, plus it pays fine. I have no complaints.
They put Al in the jazz section in the music store I use to go to. He’s not a jazz musician nor is he a flamenco guitar player!! Flamenco guitarist are rare!!
I agree with the metronomic time comments. I recently listened to an Art Tatum version of Tiger Rag. Then by coincidence I found on youtube a classical musician playing a transcription of what Art Tatum played . The classical musician played all the right notes, but rhythmically what he played didn't have the same "bounce" as the Art Tatum version. He probably practiced it like he did with his classical pieces- with a metronome running in the background.
Funny story, Jimmy. I started classical lessons at eleven years old. I was standing outside the downtown building where my teacher's studio was located, my guitarcase in hand, waiting for my mother to pick me up, when an older guy looking kind of rundown came up to me and asked if I had any white horse. I remember looking up at him and asking what he was talking about. He explained "heroin". At thirteen or so I had little experience with the white horse. I replied, "No, I don't have any drugs". He replied, "Good, 'cause if you ever do it, I'm gonna come back and kick you in the balls!" A musician's glamorous life....

The answer is: He phrases like a smooth jazz trumpet player who only knows the pentatonic scale and plays chromatic tones around it, and tries to act like he is academic and plays complicated stuff at the same time. He have tried too fool anyone for decades with his facial expressions that he is advanced. The real cats reveal him apart anyday!
I remember Al once being quoted that if he chose to start a rock band it would be the biggest thing ever . Wow , must have a hellacious time finding a hat . He did have the press on his side for quite a while . Almost broke a rib laughing. Woke the house up .
