  • Monty Python star John Cleese is working on a stage production of the 1979 comedy film, The Life of Brian. In the film version, a character named Stan explains that he wants to be a woman called Loretta and “have babies”, before being told by Cleese’s character Reg that this was impossible. During a readthrough of the script for the planned stage show actors warned this particular joke could “offend people”, raising doubt as to its inclusion in the final production. John Cleese revealed the concerns with the script amid a growing debate about gender ideology. So should the ‘pregnant man’ joke be scrapped?

It's okay to bring up the subject and your concerns, but after that common sense must prevail. You're putting on a theatre play based on a Monty Python classic. You're going to have to be true to the source material.
The only person making sense on that panel was Freddy Quinn. If you fear offending people, don't do the play. If you're easily offended, don't go to a comedy show.
And that shrill harpy that can't let someone else finish a sentence (good on you Freddy for not letting her get away with it) needs to get her hypocritical views checked.

The joke was ahead of its time and now the joke is upon us. Monty Python made comedy of the fact that a man wanted to be regarded as a woman: Stan becoming Loretta. Stan decalared that he wanted to have babies to which John Cleese character pointed out that it was impossible because he didn't have a womb. This scene was juxtaposed into a movie about a Messiah and the mindless mob that sought to follow him. The trouble now is that men can now have babies! How so? Well, simply be a woman, equipped with womb, and declare that you are a man! In the warped times that are now, this is good enough. The brainwashed or brain-addled amongst us will support any fucked-up idea to appear loving and virtuous. Common sense and logic, not to mention biology, have gone missing. I imagine that the current times will be reflected upon in the same way that we reflect on the Spanish Inquisition. Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!

Do we edit things out of plays about the holocaust? the Cold War? The Troubles? No, we don’t. The Life of Brian was, and is, one of the greatest works of all time. It used humour to show us all out of our own prejudices and assumptions about the world.
And, actually, it’s still in step with human biology. While more would perhaps assimilate with the character Stan now than in the 1970s, the human male remains unable to bear children!
And in fact the characters can be seen to resolve the issue, by granting Stan the right to have babies, even though he doesn’t have a womb, which is nobody’s fault not even the Roman’s.
They don’t show that part of the sketch on the TV, and that is the danger with tv producers trying to whip up a debate.

By all means be aware of being DELIBERATELY offensive, but Christ Almighty, grow a backbone if you can't take a joke in it's context, nowadays too many people are offended by things which have no importance in comparison to bigger problems in the world. As a Christian I have enjoyed a lot Monty Python’s works but found Life of Brian a very hard and at times offensive watch. However, I fully respect its right to exist based on freedom of speech.
The ending of the video nailed it. It’s ironic that a production that is satire against Christian views has “concerns” certain trans groups may be offended by the trans type jokes. But somehow no consideration is taken that from day 1 some Christian’s can take offence to it.

    • @jpdicey789
      @jpdicey789 Год назад +1

Hmm... don't know whether I really understand what you're saying? There is mockery for the right reasons and then there is mockery for the wrong reasons. Life of Brian isn't just satirising religious belief it's satirising absolute certainty with respect to religious belief, especially in the scene with the crowd that keeps stalking Brian lol
I've seen tons of Christians mocking atheists by straw manning their position with the childish 'you believe the Universe was created from nothing by nothing' lol when scientists are still trying to work out with competing theories where the mathematics behind the Universe's formation leads!
They may not even think it would make sense using terms like "before" apparently material energy might be eternal and our societies have likely collectively grown and developed to become morally and ethically more complex over time, that's why I don't think the foundation for morality argument works either.
We've developed both intellectually and socially to be able to empathise and structure our societies with respect to that empathy as a collective benefit generally becomes more beneficial at the individual level with respect to survival.
Even animals have this on a basic level and what I see is religion hijacking that and claiming that it's the central feature, when in some instances it can be argued as a primitive understanding of it. A potential origin isn't the same thing as a standard, which is why it is fallacious to arbitrarilly view homosexuality as immoral for example.
Comparing it to paedophilia, which would be the move of someone like William Lane Craig for example is intellectually dishonest because unlike homosexuality there are actual moral issues to consider such as the child being mentally and emotionally scarred due to physical and emotional immaturity.
And even if the child doesn't subjectively feel scarred they may intern act out what they have learned which could scar someone else. Little girls would be especially at risk because if they sexually matured early (they tend to earlier than boys) then their bodies might still not be developed enough to having kids and they could die since abortion is wrong according to certain popular denominations.
Now I'm not saying that Christianity can't still be believed while viewed through a cultural/historical lense rather than a fundamentalist, literalist one, but a lot of times it doesn't seem to be the case and you can't altogether blame those who might misunderstand.
I also acknowledge that there is difference between belief and knowledge, I could be gnostic or agnostic about a position but I might think there are hints or inferences that suggest it might be true.
But to me that is still entirely different from saying that it absolutely is or isn't. There are some Christian's who argue the whole brain in a vat argument with respect to reality which could apply to them just as much as everyone else!
I think belief can shape aspects of the more abstract nature of reality that is beyond our understanding, I think it is a 2 way process. Is that a belief? Sure, but inferences seem to suggest as much. I also think Life of Brian is just a bit of fun, but I understand why you might be offended and for what it's worth even though a lot of times I've seen religious people argue dishonestly, I respect the fact that you think they should be able to express themselves, as they see fit as in the long run I think it deepens understanding and clarity.

    • @Maxrodon

@@jpdicey789 Sorry, to re-word what I'm trying to say, is that if they were so worried about offending trans people, why did they stop there and why was that the big issue/concern? Did they ever even consider how offensive the overall material might be to Christians?
So my point was more around the irony of the productions concerns of offending one group without really caring or even considering how other groups may feel.
This is the equivalent of someone making a Satire about Japan and the biggest concern is not about how Japanese people would take it, but rather a scene that makes jokes about fat people.
I as a Christian have found alot of the humour in Life of Brian very clever but at times very offensive, but respect it's right to exist based on free speech despite not liking the content and despite the core of the film being a satire of Christian beliefs.
And I have no issue with people watching it or finding it funny.
I would rather live in a world where that freedom of thought (especially in comedy) was encouraged rather that censored. With censorship the LGBT group and minorities would not have the social support and acceptance they have today.
So they are trying "to do the right thing" with deeply flawed ignorance. A good example is how in WW2 the US felt they were figthing Nazism and fighting Anti-semitism and intolerence. Yet even the army they used had open segregation of blacks and blacks were still heavily discriminated in America. Because of how they viewed blacks as sub-human at the time, that concept of morally evaluating how they treated blacks wasn't obvious to them in the slightest.

    • @jpdicey789
      @jpdicey789 Год назад +1

@@Maxrodon On your first point I would say that I agree that's why I don't think they should be censoring it and I think people's attitudes to it these days are juvenile and childish but I think in this case when it comes to prejudice I can see blame on both sides. I don't really understand why religious people are so concerned about how other people choose to identify (namely public figures who just want to make money by talking about it, which also has dangers if not done responsibly as I'm sure you know) it seems targeted at certain groups because certain other groups have an agenda either political or financial or both.
When it comes to the trivial bullshit like pronouns I'll refer to you however you want is generally my take, but if I dislike you because your unnecessarily pedantic thought process and small petty attitude with relation to it is bringing everyone down I will not feel morally obliged to comply. As for your second question, yes they did and that is why they did it as I have just lengthily explained. It isn't specifically targeted at Christianity in a broader philosophical context, it's targeting ridiculous tribal attitudes and dogmas within it, big distinction.
I would also say that the Japanese and fat people thing is a non-example because fat people and Japanese culture aren't topics that are polarised between each other with respect to how someone views the world to the same degree. Being fat is just poor lifestyle choice, it only becomes immoral with respect to other people and their concern for you and your wellbeing and how you act with respect to that issue.
There aren't any fixed consequences with respect to satirising a culture to the same degree that there would be with respect to satirising what can be viewed as a fixed set of unalterable dogma because if the more beautiful, philosophical aspects of the religion can be separated from the primitive dogma as I've charitably suggested then obviously this analogy doesn't work.
Besides British culture is vastly different from our American counterparts, we tend to acknowledge that certain forms of speech qualify as hate speech and have nothing to do with putting limits on people's freedom, more freedom leads to more emotionally charged snow flakish oversensitivity from my perspective because the crueler the things being said the more over sensitive people get, that's why it's easier for us to laugh at each other and ourselves without getting silly about it, at least that was the case in the past before our culture got even more Americanised lol our culture previously didn't self reflect enough to consider any of this shit we just had a live and let live attitude despite strong opinions.
From my perspective, fat people might have fuck all to do with Japan but what someone's gender is or isn't or whether they're sinning or not more often has far more to do with religious fundamentalists and there is a lot more polarisation with the other than a lot of people want to pretend.
I've never seen large parts of Japanese culture tell a fat person that they're sinning for being overweight lol like I said I don't think either of them should be so focused on in such a pedantic way since in context it isn't even hate speech, but I at least have to acknowledge more reason for understanding one side of the argument over the other.

@@Maxrodon Just like to add that if you do want to argue that gender identity and sex are more closely tied together then the bible says that a man shall not lie with a man as he lies with a woman and calls it an abomination. Now, if that isn't perceived as purely historical with relation to culture at the time it can actually be perceived as a jab at gender identity since it would be prohibiting a man lying as a woman would.

Kate defines the subtle cowardice and tyranny of self-censorship. As a fairly devout Catholic, I find the crucifixion scene sacrilegious and offensive. But I would be the LAST person to presume to edit a film that nobody is forcing me to watch, and I would want to include all the best humor in a stage production. John Cleese taking down the transgender madness is one of the funniest satires in the movie.
And the group-think solution to the little argument, deciding to fight for Stan's right to be a woman even though he can't, is a brilliant take-down of SJW.
In spite of the ending, "Life of Brian" remains one of my favorite flicks, exceeded in humor perhaps only by Python's other masterpiece; "M.P. and the Holy Grail". When Monty Python becomes PC, it stops being Monty Python.

Its not easy to find an article about Gibsons dog that even mentions the original name, virtually every article i could find described the name a "a racial slur" but none would say what the slur was...which i actually think is quite disturbing.
Even in context, writers cannot even write a partially censored version of the word in question.
This is what the rewritting of history looks like.
I actually didn't know the dog in the movie dambusters was called *"N*g*er"* perhaps naively i thought the black Labrador might be called Blackie... (Yet another words thats recently been removed from history).
While, sure, i can say it's not appropriate to call a black Labrador *"Ni**er"* ... I also don't think its appropriate to rewrite history... Or to rewrite a oersons character (fictional or otherwise).
The dog in the movie was based on a real dog in real life events...
Changing the name of the dog is CHANGING the history.

When I first saw this film in 1979 - as a couple of teenagers, myself and a friend nearly collapsed with laughter coming out of the Odeon Clapham Junction - a brilliant film. It did not attack Christianity at all, the whole basis of the film was that three wise men knocked at the WRONG door, Brian's house and then made fun of the mistake. It then takes the piss out of the Roman occupation of Judea, latin teachers, preachers in general, frankly anything and everything, including people with big noses, like me - faarking hilarious.
