@Angelo Bronte Water doesn't clean off anything. On the contrary, it tends to amplify odours. Have you ever worn a gym t-shirt that wasn't washed well enough...even if you use deodorant, as soon as you start sweating a bit, the clean sweat activates the old and dried sweat molecules and the shirt starts smelling bad instantly. I thought it was alcohol, and it could be...but unless you cover everything with alcohol, it won't be able to neutralize all odours and it will evaporate soon afterwards. Vinegar on the other hand, even if it doesn't touch and neutralize all the odours...it continues emitting its own smell for a long time, effectively covering less powerful odours. In response to OP, I guess the Darkseekers don't really think a lot about specific odours. Just like dogs and cats, if they smell food or their loved ones, they are attracted to it. But if you cover some meat with vinegar, they probably won't even go near it...they won't think: Oh, this strange smell makes me suspicious :P
If I remember correctly, the reason he doesn’t set his watch alarm to a nice time like 5:25 is because he references the farmers almanac to determine the exact time that the sun is supposed to set, which is different every single day. So he most likely sets the alarm 30 minutes to an hour prior to the actual sunset time.
Fun fact: "I was saving that bacon." was supposed to be a reference to the fact that Neville always saves some human food for Sam, but of course he forgot that Sam was gone, so by then his saving food for Sam had just became a habit.
Usually deers are vigilant towards the end of the hunting season after they learn to fear humans, but they forget quickly. Since he's the only human in NYC I think he could realistically get that close
I buy this. I've definitely gotten within 10 yards of deer with my dog on private land a few times, even with my dog making a scene. -_- Public land, not so much.
"He's using a 4x sight called an ACOG, which isn't a ideal for urban environments where you're room clearing most of the time." Yeah try to tell this to R6S players
Anna (the other survivor) turns up a day earlier before Neville and Sam get into that fight with the alpha and the other canines, they return to his house, collect the blood from the cured darkseeker and go to the colony further north... Keeping the dog safe the whole time...
This will forever be one of my favourite apocalypse films, almost solely for Will Smiths performance, he sells every ounce of fear, anger and sadness and it’s actually impressive
That scene where he's looking for his dog in the dark building is such an intense scene, so well done. Tbh I always really liked this movie. Kind of wished it was longer. Has a great build up then it rushes a towards the end
@@unumwetwetwe Yeah, the alternate ending is much smarter and more in-line with the book, but the infamous "test audiences" didn't like it, so they dumbed it down before widespread release.
The book is pretty different. They know where his house is and taunt him regularly to come out, which he sometimes does to blast them and retreat back inside. He uparmored his home and burned down the next door houses
“If the threat is that severe you wouldn’t be using a low accuracy testing tool” I’m in the navy and we use a Walmart thermometer to check if people have a fever before the board the boat. Those things suck. You’re giving the military too much credit lmao
@Wet Tent The only difference in America is that the military have more better weapons than civilians. America citizens all have the same Health Insurance. No exceptions.
"Where are the 8 million skeletons? The PG13 Gods must've lifted them up." 12 yr old me watching this video just assumed that the Darkseekers ate bones.
In books which is far different to this (main one being that they’re vampires not zombies), before the outbreak the government was enforcing that people should burn any deceased to limit the spread at set locations they set up. A lot of people however didn’t do this and tried to bury their loved ones which often led to them being shot on sight. Those that did get buried or left dead are the infected that now roam at night.
Any virus that could end the dark seekers likely would kill him as well because he isn't immune. On the other end, dark seeker biology might be too different to experiment easily on (as well as the lack of access to viruses/bacteria from level 4 biolabs, whereas he at least has the potential for a cure because of his own immunity.
fun fact: they actually created 3 different endings to the movie. One where Neville throws the grenade through the broken glass, this one, and one where we find out the darkseeker in Neville's lab is the alpha's daughter, and give her back so they leave him alone. This is the only ending where Neville dies.
When I was riding on a ship once like 5 years ago, I swear Will Smith survived and when I saw this video, I was confused as to why he died I thought it was some weird Mandela effect but this cleared it up.
I originally saw the grenade version and like 6 years later I saw him give the daughter back and i thought I misremembered it thx for making me not feel insane
Easy answer: get to Alaska asap, you get months of daylight at a time to prepare for your long night, plus it's got an incredibly low population density..... Which means less darkseekers in the area making it significantly safer than an area like New York city
Sam’s death had me in tears so Neville probably decided to blow himself up and not get in the thing just to end it all. Like you said his will to survive must’ve been all gone and the only thing pushing him was getting the other two and the cure out of danger.
There's a really cool alt ending in some versions where instead of him killing himself he shows the alpha male that his mate is ok,he then gives her back and they leave him alive after giving him a roar of thanks. They make it to the camp and whatever happened happened.
@@Jaysmaug that's the ending I saw when watching the movie in full. I had seen this video's ending when I was a kid and so I was so confused and thought I had somehow imagined an ending even though I hadn't watched the full movie
@@sleepy_moJo_ yeah i guess thats the only reason mabye to collect samples but if that was true why was there already a horde THAT HAD REACHED the edge of manhattan already where everybody was escaping in large enough numbers to down a helicopter
That was ground zero. That was his site. So in that area, he can study the darkseekers in their first level easily as that was the first ever virus hit city.
GOF6666 i mean this is the same military that is still holding mass evacuations at night rather than placing the city on lockdown even tho im sure they knew the darkseekers only come out at night. They also evacuated a VERY high ranking officials family via the same route as the general public so safe to say they are either very poorly prepared in the movie or were way too confident in their ability to contain it
Still bums me out that they made him a “legend” because he successfully created a cure. In the book he was legend because he had become the monster. Vampires inherited the world and he was just this evil force murdering them and their children for no reason. And he finally comes to understand this as they publicly execute him. It’s a very dark, non-hollywood ending so I guess I get it, but the original text is sompowerful
I don’t really get behind the book’s ending since the vampires would be smart enough to know why he was afraid and was killing them as a misunderstanding. They had a female one go and talk with him, why couldn’t she have explained what was going on to him beforehand?
@@yurikagarinstan674 the movie completely inverted the entire point of the book. Neville spent his days going from place to place, killing any of these creatures he found sleeping in beds and other dark places. He experimented on them so he could find the most efficient methods of killing them. He became a literal Bogeyman to them, even though he thought he was doing good and helping to bring the world back to normal. He was so preoccupied with getting rid of the “monsters” that he didn’t realize (until the end of the story) that he was the monster in a new world that had moved on without him. He’d assured by the end that the new “normal” people would always remember him and the fear he instilled in them, hence the title of the book. It was a lot more impactful and interesting than just some virologist who found a way to bring the old ways (which caused the apocalypse to begin with) back. It was a metaphor on conservatism, and how those who refuse to change see everyone else as enemies that needed to be destroyed. In the book, the vampires had intelligence, enhanced abilities, and some memories of their old lives. They weren’t just mindless monsters. There was no chance for a cure, and the vampires themselves led meaningful lives, and it was Neville who was the true threat to a new “humanity.”
I'm very glad the movie distanced itself from the book's ending. The old ending was inconsistent with how the Darkseekers acted throughout the story and overly didactic with the tired cliche of 'but the hero was the "real monster" all along!!1!'. It felt like the author was preaching to the reader and relying too heavily on a moralistic message rather than a satisfying resolution.
I have the DVD of this movie and it came with a second ending where he takes the blood, undoes the healing process on the darkseeker and opens the door to give her back to the alpha. When the darkseekers see that he is returning her, they dont attack. Then the 3 survivors go to the camp.
@@KillerQueen-gx4vb Made you cry? The book was awesome, it was actually very scary and intense. But I remember the ending different *Spoiler* he got caught and publicly executed in front of the new civilization.
Fito it’s been a few years since I read the book but didn’t someone felt pity for him and gave him a pill to kill himself? Maybe he didn’t take it I really can’t remember but it’s been one of my favorite books of all time.
Content Corrector they had nowhere else to go. They either die in their homes, or die in the streets. That’s the sad reality. They couldn’t ship patients upstate quick enough and had no containment space left in hospitals. It sucked, but it’s not always going to roses.
The darkseekers bother me because they’re not just zombies, or animal like. They can actually rig up traps, train animals, and just generally solve problems. I like my threats to be numerous, slow, shambling, and stupid. Kinda like Detroit Lions fans.
They are actually easily dealt with though and just as easily avoided. They cannot tolerate light, and even when you're under a forest canopy, 20% or more of the normal UV amount is still reaching you. They are literally confined to cities and unable to leave under pain of death.
I really do wish that the film made reflected the book, the dark seekers are incredibly smart and they talk. Communicates with Robert every night, yelling his name at night to prevent him from sleeping. The dog is definitely a crucial part of the story but not like the film. The ending absolutely abysmal, the book ending is extraordinary. Please read it. Will Smith did play Robert very well and his character qualities in trying to determine to study them and his slow decent into madness.
I don’t really get behind the book’s ending since the vampires would be smart enough to know why he was afraid and was killing them as a misunderstanding. They had a female one go and talk with him, why couldn’t she have explained what was going on to him?
@@KW-de9sc You see the vampires seen Robert as the monster and they were both afraid of each other, however the vampires would talk around fires about Robert in how he would hunt them so this is why Robert is a legend. She did explain what was going to happen to him and get ripped apart by them but something happened between them during her undercover entry of his home, she fell in love with him or felt sympathy for him, perhaps both. She wasn't a normal vampire as she could feel and thus give him a tablet to take his own life before they ripped him apart, so he wouldn't be alive during his torturous death. Brilliant ending in my opinion.
And by transmitting his SOS at night, he’s more likely to reach other survivors. Broadcasting at night, when everyone is in their shelters is better than doing it when everyone is out during the day.
@@Skibiddybaby272 I didn't say transmit at sun down, which would vary by time zone. I said transmit at night. 11pm in NY is 10pm Central, 9pm Mountain, 8pm Pacific. (The same goes for Canada's time zones which he would also be broadcasting over). All those times are after sundown so almost all survivors would be indoors by that time, all over the US/Canada. AND radio frequencies travel much much further at night than during the day due to skywave propagation. Even a powerful AM transmitter can only cover 100-200 miles during the day. At night, triple that. And if he knows what he's doing he can transmit thousands of miles based on frequency and MHz he uses/has available. And given that he's transmitting in a city, with massive Line-of-sight/obstacle/magnetic interference, he needs every advantage he can get to get his signal out.

Something that really adds to the movie is that in the scene where we see how Nevilles family died right as the helicopter takes off his daughter hands puppy sam to Neville saying "sam protect daddy" which just makes sams death hit harder because not only was sam the only thing keeping him sane but also that sam died doing exactly what Nevilles daughter asked sam to do God this movie is so underrated
6:07 - Okay, the watch beeping at 5;23pm could make perfect sense. I'll explain: First, some facts: - He's in NYC - The movie is set in 2012 - The grass is tall and brown, a hint that it's late summer or early autumn - He's wearing a leather jacket and not heavily sweating. I.e., it's not hot, and it's not super cold. - Lions typically give birth to young in May/June. The cubs shown are quite small, but walking well... they appear to be roughly 3 months old. - When he turns to look at the sun, it's about 15° above the horizon, more or less (seen at 6:12 in the video), consistent with about an hour before sunset. - His watch actually says 5;22 when we see it, not 5;23 as the narrator says (I'm using semicolons so RUclips won't convert to video timestamps) Now, some reasonable speculations: - Dr. Neville is a smart guy. He understands that the time the sun actually sets varies widely throughout the year, especially in the more northern latitudes. - It makes sense that he would have located a sunrise/sunset calendar, or has simply noted the times the sun sets from surviving for 3 years. (EDIT: Indeed, as @elteescat notes below, "At the beginning of the movie we see him consult a Farmer's Almanac then set his watch. I always thought he was checking the sunset time. Then, when his alarm beeps and he turns to look at the sun, it reaffirms the idea.") - He knows the Darkseekers come out at night (mostly), but they seem to tolerate SOME light okay. Finally, some less reasonable (but still logical) speculation: - His drop-dead "cutoff" for being outside is probably the moment the sun disappears below the horizon. This is the end of official daylight and the beginning of civil twilight. Even though it's still pretty easy to see during civil twilight, there is no direct sunlight, so he'd probably consider it unacceptably risky. - He'd want to maximize his useful time outside, so giving himself a 1 hour warning before official sunset to get home would make sense. - He's probably not bothered with Daylight Saving Time (DST) since civilization is gone and using it serves no purpose otherwise. Given the above, I posit that his alarm went off exactly one hour before official sunset on *September 4th, 2012* (which occurred in NYC at 7;22pm, or critically, 6;22pm if we ignore DST). Further, the historical average high/low temperature in NYC on September 4th is 80°F/66°F, respectively, so his attire would also make sense for the season. Notes: - There is an alternative scenario where it could be October 10th if he was in fact on DST - the sun did set at 6;22pm (DST) on that date. Also, the weather is still reasonable at 67°/53° historically on that date, so it all fits. Actually, I liked this date first because I remembered his radio broadcasts referring to "noon", making DST calculations mandatory. However, I when I re-listened, I realized he doesn't refer to noon at all. Instead he says "I will be at the South Street Seaport at mid-day, when the sun is highest in the sky". This changed my mind about him using DST. - This whole exercise almost came crashing down on me because there was NO date (at least in 2012) that the sun set at exactly 6;23pm as the narrator says. It was either 6;22 or 6;24. I abandoned it until I went back to re-watch and noticed his watch actually said 6;22! :) - Yes, it's entirely possible he set is watch to beep forty-five minutes before sunset, or an hour and fifteen minutes before sunset, but an hour seems an obvious and rational choice. I really don't think it would be 2 hours, because the sun doesn't appear high enough to me. However... - My theory could be proven/disproven by someone smarter than me, or by a NYC local by figuring out his exact location and using the buildings, landmarks, and other contextual clues to calculate the exact azimuth and elevation of the sun to determine the precise date, time, and how long before sunset it actually was. Of course, for this to work, we'd have to assume that either the movie was shot exactly on the date and time in question, or the CGI folks are gods and paid extraordinary attention to detail. - This video was uploaded on September 4th, 2020, exactly 8 years after my theorized date. The coincidence is too cool NOT to be true! Yes, I know this comment is super long. Sorry if you died of old age from reading it. It was a fun exercise for me, though :)
I assumed it was an hour until sunset personally, it doesn't need to be completely dark for them to start coming out as long as they aren't exposed to the sun
They aren't zombies. They're mutants. And technically they're closer to vampires than zombies. Plus in the 1954 original I am legend they literally were vampires
The books title “I am legend” makes much more sense in the book. The vampires looked like people. The ones who were infected while living are capable of thought and form a new society. The main character killed a ton of them and the vampires looked at him like he looked at them, a scary legend.
@@eradict I believe it was due to something that caused them to cognitively be unable to recognize people (humans) and remember their old life. So essentially they all just woke up as a new species with a hyper aggressive other species attacking them (humans).
In modern stuff it kind of blends in modern stuff. Generally people call zombies everything that eat flesh (including rabies vampire*) and can spread infection by bite and vampire - everything feeding on blood. *kind of don't worry, rabies kills human in a week so no rabies invasion possible
this was a good movie. - Good main character. Really showed us how he survived so long. Erasing his scent, setting up multiple alarms based on a morning book, fortified base, locks the dvd store so he knows whether someone has broken in or not. He is also a genius, not just someone who has a ton of weapons. - Showed us what isolation can do to a person. He was desperate. Talking to manequins. Made me even think that it was he who put Fred there and not the darkseekers. Even after he met people he was still super awkward because he hadn't been talking to people for 3 years. - scary monsters with intelligence. Made the traps and set dogs to chase him. Also liked the restriction that they couldn't go out at sunlight. Made it more suspensefull.
@@NerdExplains It's appreciated! It's stuff like this that brings your content above other similar videos. Anybody could just say, "I have an idea what could have happened" but your stuff always has tons of context and interesting info!
Getting that close to a dear is very possible, to effectively bow hunt you need to, and with a small game rifle like the ar-15 you need to be precise to get a clean kill. Also deer traps are rare if you can even find one, and are rarely effective.
3:57 Too be fair, most corpses/bones would be in mass graves of the early stages of the pandemic, clustered in battlefields of the middles stages and inside buildings (darkseekers) from the later stages where Will Smith and other -rappers- survivors fought and killed them. Also continuously calling out the lack of a dedicated safe room is quite hilarious. Building a safe room of steel and concrete by yourself with no heavy machinery or experience in construction is the epitome of "easier said than done".
Am I the only one who saw the alternate ending of this movie where the dark seeker leader realized that Neville was trying to cure them and then wasn’t hostile to them
Little known facts but the zombie he took was actually one of the first dark seekers, along with the one who burned his face in the sun. He had multiple subjects but this time he took "the queen" instead of a random grunt which caused the backlash. I had the dvd since it came out and love the easter eggs. With that context, the part with the darkseeker desperately breaking glass makes more sense.
It's all about location, in this case Liberty Island that for one is island with short distance to all central location in NY. It has freaking fortress and is relatively small so it would be easy place to totally clear out and manage. Fortress that statue stands on is pretty much impossible to breach for dark seekers as long as some door are reinforced/blocked properly. As long as the couple other buildings on the island are cleared out and boarded up, there would be no places for dark seekers to hide. Though I think there would barely be any people there as it's not residential island and there's not much food. It will also solve many smell and sound problems, you will have almost unlimited options to land on NY and dark seekers can't locate him by smell to his actual home. Due to thick stone walls you could probably arrange an rave inside the fort and it wouldn't be heard outside. There's also plenty of space on the island to set up something like greenhouse for example. And because it's so close to land, you could even use boat without motor to get there. It's literally the ideal place for zombie apocalypse. It's big enough to do whatever you want, but it's also compact and has only few buildings. As far as I know there's also raised stone wall and fence that surrounds whole island, if you can get enough razor wire you could make even landing in the island extremely hard. And in case dark seekers invade the island, he could just stay on top of the fort walls and shoot them. Or just stay inside, they wouldn't get in :D If he employs those uv lamps on top of the walls it would be an massacre.
"well that's fucking terrifying, i would have blasted that dude right there..." was the funniest fucking thing ive heard in a long time that i subscribed right then lol

For me, a strange part about this movie is that there weren't any stray dogs or cats for Robert to adopt. Maybe the reason why there weren't any is because the darkseekers either ate them or turned them into darkseeker dogs, but there were plenty of deer and even the lions (You actually see the lion family in the alternate ending, fun fact) Or maybe lots of the pet dogs like Sam couldn't survive on their own, without their owner.
i know this is a year, but this is probably because domesticated animals can’t really live on their own. wild animals have always been in the wild and have a slightly better survival instinct . as for stray cats , they probably got ate 💀 i mean personally i dont think stray cats would be able to live on their own in an apocalypse.
@@mxfeneI believe domesticated cats would have a better chance at survival concerning their natural and exceptional talent of hunting even at a complete indoor lifestyle from birth are still capable of solitary survival. Maybe he has some close run-ins with Darkseekers, maybe he takes in some survivors, starts a relationship, leaves Manhattan, etc.

As a hunter I’ve seen deer pick out my group from over 300 meters away visually. Perhaps they don’t recognize him as a predator, but his body language would totally reveal he was a threat and put them on edge. It is possible to get this close to a deer, it’s just really hard. Practically impossible when there are any more than a handful.
Oh yeah, nukes, which launch tonnes of dust and other stuff into the air creating clouds which would mean the darkseekers would not be as badly harmed by sunlight. No, the better method is fire bombs. You still need to eradicate the population centres cos they're a lost cause and darkseekers will be leaking out of them like crazy once whatever the hell they eat runs out (seemingly consisting of animals and foraged food, so the only reason for them to stay in urban areas is to avoid the sun, but considering that the east coast has a juicy population density it could be possible for darkseekers to spend whole nights walking or running between towns to get more foraging space, encountering humans and killing or infecting them as they do so), but not in a way that blots out the sun for an extended period of time over a large area afterwards. Firebombing, while less cost-effective, is more effective overall for wiping out a population centre than anything short of an overdone nuke (*chuckles in 250 megatonne Soviet flex*) if done properly, which it should be if the military does it. A nuke destroys a chunk of a city and gives everyone else cancer, firebombs kill everything by draining the air of oxygen for minutes at a time, with the amount of time people can survive without oxygen being decreased by the terror and even if they use methods to deal with the oxygen deprivation to survive longer they've also got fire to worry about and no way in hell are you getting out of a city in 3 minutes. On top of this, you destroy most food sources, forcing a far smaller number of darkseekers out but with you now knowing they're out, so use firebombs to destroy all nearby forestation to reduce protection from sunlight and make them visible when you shoot them for attempting to leave.
I like the alternate ending where the female 'zombie' is the leader's girlfriend and when he gives the leader the girlfriend back they all were able to travel to the survivor camp.

If the Darkseekers were a bit smarter, they would be suspicious about the only house entrance in Manhattan with a strong vinegar smell.
Vinegar evaporates soon after...but I'm not sure that's vinegar anyway. Could be any sort of acidic substance...
@@Albanez39 but i think vinegar evaporates and gets rid of smells with it, or at least that's what all moms say anyway lol
He used ammonia in the movie

They had a female one go and talk with him, why couldn’t she have explained what was going on to him beforehand?
i disagree, i thought the ending where the vampire sees the female one is just so weird and him being a legend because he made a cure was way better
I'll never forget reading that book. Very good
I'm very glad the movie distanced itself from the book's ending.

God this movie is so underrated
6:07 - Okay, the watch beeping at 5;23pm could make perfect sense. I'll explain:
First, some facts:
- He's in NYC
- The movie is set in 2012
- The grass is tall and brown, a hint that it's late summer or early autumn
- He's wearing a leather jacket and not heavily sweating.
- His watch actually says 5;22 when we see it, not 5;23 as the narrator says (I'm using semicolons so RUclips won't convert to video timestamps)
Now, some reasonable speculations:
- Dr.
Then, when his alarm beeps and he turns to look at the sun, it reaffirms the idea.")
- He knows the Darkseekers come out at night (mostly), but they seem to tolerate SOME light okay.
Finally, some less reasonable (but still logical) speculation:
- His drop-dead "cutoff" for being outside is probably the moment the sun disappears below the horizon.
Notes:
- There is an alternative scenario where it could be October 10th if he was in fact on DST - the sun did set at 6;22pm (DST) on that date.
- Yes, it's entirely possible he set is watch to beep forty-five minutes before sunset, or an hour and fifteen minutes before sunset, but an hour seems an obvious and rational choice.

Little known facts but the zombie he took was actually one of the first dark seekers, along with the one who burned his face in the sun.

For me, a strange part about this movie is that there weren't any stray dogs or cats for Robert to adopt. Maybe the reason why there weren't any is because the darkseekers either ate them or turned them into darkseeker dogs, but there were plenty of deer and even the lions (You actually see the lion family in the alternate ending, fun fact)
Or maybe lots of the pet dogs like Sam couldn't survive on their own, without their owner.
i know this is a year, but this is probably because domesticated animals can’t really live on their own. wild animals have always been in the wild and have a slightly better survival instinct . as for stray cats , they probably got ate 💀 i mean personally i dont think stray cats would be able to live on their own in an apocalypse.
@@mxfene very interesting point. Thank you for the response.
@@mxfene stray cats are still in touch with their instincts so they might be able to survive
@@mxfeneI believe domesticated cats would have a better chance at survival concerning their natural and exceptional talent of hunting even at a complete indoor lifestyle from birth are still capable of solitary survival. Millitary Families being evacuated has always been an interesting concept to me. It's very likely that a lot of those Soldiers in the Flashback had family in New York City. Imagine being activated in an Emergency like this and being told to abandon your family. YEA BOI NUKE DAT SHIT
@@jimothyworldbuilding3664 um they will all be dead by the blast so there might not be any darkseekers to witness the darkness
