the Vatican never really banned the show, event if they wanted to... the church doesn't have the power to over impose decisions. but it's definitely true that John Paul II was so scared of a scandal that he begged Madonna to avoid provocations during her concert and even invited her to meet privately in an extreme effort to persuade her to quit the italian leg of the tour, to which Madonna famously replied "if the Pope wants to see me he can buy a ticket like anybody else and come to my show". in the end the controversy affected so much ticket sales that a second show in Rome had only sold 3.000 tickets before being cancelled.
But there were religious groups making the propaganda anti BAT and they were quite effectives to the Rome shows boycott
