Groundbreaking, timeless, American Life is definitely one of Madonna's best and most underrated albums!
One of the prime examples of why Madonna is the most daring popstar of all time, she wasn't afraid to release such risky artistic statements even at the peaks of her career.

And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.
Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?
Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.
Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?
But he spake of the temple of his body.
When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.
Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.
But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.«

Banned 20 years ago, I think it was one of the best things that happened here to Madonnas original video: if they are afraid of you, they try to silence you. M must have done something right - not to mention the pure artistry that's behind all that runway-presentation, but the whole idea, the whole story, the message... and still, 20 years later, M still doesn't hold back. What a brave woman! And then, just out of protest, coming up with the most boring video of all time in front of flags... She's a genious!
The only people they are trying to silence today are Republicans, but we won’t be silenced and yes, I like Madonna, I just saw her in concert.

That's a really great music video and reminder of how terrible war is. Huge respect to Madonna to speak her mouth as loud as possible and using her fame and global audience to be heard. "American Life" turned 20 a couple of days ago and I think that's a really underrated album. The most political of her but she wanted to talk about this and she did it. Thanks for director's cut M!
It was her artistic, deep personal artistic reviling of her true self. It didn´t sold well, people did not want to think, just entertainment.

Listened to it on a loop for a whole year in 2021 and I completely agree- most underrated but has the most gems on it - and in later albums she’s referenced several parts in it. I think it meant a lot to her at the time but people missed the point

This song really holds up 20 years later. Still my favourite album of hers, underrated but slowly gaining appreciation. The video is a feast for the eyes. Always pushing boundaries and challenging us all to question, think & discuss. A true artist, yet they still say she doesn't write her own music, is finished or too old, has nothing to offer. She will be lauded, sadly it won't be until she is no longer here. The single most important artist of the last 40 years.

I've waited 20 years to see this video as intended. 20 years have passed, and it's still as brilliant, and incendiary as it ever was. While everyone else zigs, Madonna zags. Two steps ahead then, and now. American Life is an incredible artistic statement. I hope everyone sees it, and finally gives her all the flowers.

As a younger fan of Madonna I've watched this video only unofficial ways and this is my favorite from her entire videography. Not only the message still important and everything presented here VERY and sadly present in our daily routine, the video itself it is so well done. I even cried that now I can finally appreciate this the way it deserves! And let's not forget that there is another version with a double of George Bush in the end that catch the granade! What a MASTERPIECE!

I repeat. That Madonna made this brutally honest video 20 years ago shows just how visionary and courageous this woman is. We are talking about an artist and not just a commercial product designed to enlarge numbers and please everyone, omitting any socially relevant messages that may be controversial. I thank Madonna for releasing this video because its message is still relevant to this day (unfortunately) and for this reason it could not continue to be censored.
I have to strongly and respectfully disagree with you. During this time, The Dixie Chicks were getting boycotted due to a comment they made about then President Bush, who was pushing for the war in Iraq. Madonna feared getting Dixie Chicke'd and she chose to censor herself. Madonna was afraid to go agains the Military Industrial Complex. To her credit though, she did support Wesley Clark during the primaries in 03 and 04. Unfortunately, another puppet, John Kerry won the nomination. I do agree with what you said as far as Madonna being an actual artist, not just someone who can sing.

She made a own life a piece of art renewing from time to time. That's why she also worked on and with her body as a piece of art... really unique in music history. This video was needed in 2003. I'm surprised this version still censors the George W. Bush lookalike catching the grenade. I was always somewhat disappointed in Madonna for pulling this video instead of using her stardom to put pressure on music channels to play it. I think it hurt her a bit because she'd already pissed off one group by making it and then disappointed some of her fans for not standing by it, when she was known for standing by her controversial work. I think her career jumped the shark a bit at that moment and never fully recovered.

This is a masterpiece in it's truly form, Madonna has pushed so many boundaries over the years, and American Life, both music video and the album , was no exception. Just the fact of she's addressing the hypocrisy of the American society and releasing such a controversial statement in a form of a music video, no matter the cost, makes her an unique and true artist. Not so many artists takes this risks right and no matter all the bad consequences involved. Just Madonna, the one and only Queen of Pop

Saw this video aimlessly browsing and couldn't pass it up. The original cut of American Life is such a gem. People do not even understand.
She planned this so meticulously. In her casting call, she asked for men and women who are like models with good bodies, and she said she needed one man with long hair that was willing to have it shaved in the video. All of this is on purpose. I’m so impressed by it.
