Strike Gunner is a good one. Altrough it is a original SNES title (and not a arcade port), it's very arcade like. Old school shmups are often intended to be repetetive. It has no slowdown either, and that's not common for such an early and sprite heavy game.
rendering ranger was done by one guy and its the most impressive looking game on the sfc manfred trenz was a genius he never done a game on the snes first try and nailed it unbelievable
i agree Rendering Ranger R2 is the most technically impressive 16 bit game. also a great game, with great gameplay, and 0 slowdown. super underrated music as well. (love the metal tunes on this game) hidden masterpiece!
Awesome video. My favorite 16-bit shmups which I also humbly think are the best so far. Horiz: ThunderForce IV (we all know this already lol) but also, R-Type 3, UN Squadron, Bio Hazard Battle, Macross Scrambled Valkyrie, TFIII, Hellfire, Battle Mania 2, Gleylancer, Steel Empire, Wings of Wor, Gradius 3, Axelay (I've yet to play Rendering R). Vertical: Raiden Project (16-bit Arcade ports), Fire Shark, Musha, Space Megaforce, Grind Stormer, Twinkle Tale, Vapor Trail, Aero Fighters, Elemental Master, I'm sure I'm missing some but these are my favs thus far. Gotta love em. It's nice to own most of them too.
Gradius III's terrible slowdown would be the perfect reason to emulate a 1cc run with the a hacked SAT1 rom. It has no slowdown at all, not even in the hardest difficulty! Pretty darn amazing.
The best deal for R-Type 3 is the Irem licensed repro that was released along with Super R-Type. You can still find them on eBay for around $60.00 or so in the original packaging pre owned.
I love the change in your demeanor when you start talking about how much you spent on MUSHA! I know that feel bro. I don't think I'll probably ever own MUSHA, but I had a similar experience when I bought Soldier Blade for the TG16 a while back. But like you said... "I HAD to." Luckily, SB is also a fantastic game ;) Good vid, keep em coming!
i got truxton which is ok, nice cheat with pausing on bosses with the bomb explosion animation, it continues to deal damage making them autowin gynoug too, hard. empire of stee was a favourite, with gba port. axelay is a great snes one i own
Another great video dude! Blazing Lazers is another awesome 16 bit classic for TG16. I think you'll love it. My wife and I grind on that one all the time. Similar power up setup to MUSHA. We managed to get MUSHA on Virtual Console but badass that you actually got the original. It was worth the Wii U lol!
Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie for super famicom.....only played it on emulation but wouldn't even wanna guess how much it's going for! It's an awesome game, by the way.
Never heard of Rendering Ranger before! In terms of technical prowess there's another shooter of the same kind, Sapphire on the PC Engine CD-ROM with arcade system card. And it's an 8-16 bit system :)
You might think it was crazy spending that kind of money on one game. But you really got yourself an investment that will probably only go up over time. If you ever decided to sell it you will probably get a good bit more than what you payed. Unlike blowing your money on something that only leaves memories you have a permanent tangible asset.
Weird as it is we never really played SHMUPS as a kid, but I am starting to get into it now. I suck something fierce at them but the 16 bit era was so fun with these. Great vid, good guide for beginners like me. BTW, great video quality and you're not the only one who paid $$$$$ for MUSHA
Awesome video!!!. There are so many great Shoot 'Em Ups for the SNES: Axelay, Rendering Ranger 2, Space Megaforce, R-Type 3, Super R-Type, Macross Scrambled Valkyrie, Gradius 3, U.N. Squadron, Bio Metal, Darius Twin, Spriggan Powered, Phalanx, the 3 Parodius games, Pop N' Twin Bee, Super Earth Defense, Firepower 2000, Star Fox 1 and 2, Aero Fighters, Pocky and Rocky 1 and 2, Flying Hero, Super Nova, Dezaemon, Acrobat Mission. Some are Amazing and some are good. There is a lot more, but aren't good games.
very cool presentation! lots of really interesting games here. definitely inspiration for my own space shootemup. will probably have to watch this again to really dig into the details. thanks so much for sharing! (:
SHMUP Master yeah! (: i've been working pretty hard on it. you can find out more here: drewvancamp.com/games/project-revolution/ - playable demo will be available in a week or so for those who sign up here: drewvancamp.com/vip
Fireshark and Rendering Ranger. the 1st really surprised me it looked pretty fun and the 2nd I admit just looked amazing, im a fan of Turrican and Thunderforce how can you lose?
Exactly! Rendering Ranger really blew my mind when I first played it a couple months ago. Just an amazing spectacle. It has a few flaws which I mentioned, but no game is perfect. It's well worth picking up a Repro or Flashcart to play it.
The soundtrack for Musha was made by Toshiaki Sakoda a very famous Japanese composer that worked on a ton of MD SFC and Pc engine games and still doing music for games to this day. The Music for Musha was the 1st Heavy Metal Suit done in any game ever. Fully sourced in FM. ruclips.net/video/5eu9iN5GAx4/видео.html
So glad I came across your channel. I have bunches of these rarer Shmups. Used to collect in the late 1990s early 2000s. What's the best site/app to keep track of your collection as well as possibly keeping an eye on the current going price of the games?
Hey, I was at MO Game Con as well! I'm a (very recent) local. The part where you were talking about Strike Gunner's price and you said "I'm gonna buy expensive shmups even if they suck," I thought "well... I wonder if that'd be the case for Earth Defense if it weren't so dirt cheap," only to see that... you did grab Earth Defense! I guess there's always Divine Sealing to test that idea out though. I have a hard time figuring out which one's worse since I don't want to touch either game again. Strange that your copy of Fire Shark defaults to Hard. Mine defaults to Easy and I have to turn it up! I was eyeing those copies of R-Type III and MUSHA at MO Game Con as well but I just didn't have the money. At least MUSHA I have on flash cart, but one of these days...
That is interesting about your copy of Fire Shark defaulting to Easy. That was certainly not the case for me. Maybe different runs of the cart or something. Cool to hear you were at MoCon. I will definitely be back n next year for sure!
could you do a video explaing your strategy to beat a hard shumup? for example, do you play first stage until master it, and only after master stage 1 you proceed to stage 2 and so on? do you record your game play so that you can carefully watch the video searching for enemy parterns, boss paterns etc? do you use joypad or joystick? do you make any modification to you joypad / joystick? do you reset the game when you die, so that you aways play with maximum power ups possible? sorry too long text, and have fun :)
SHMUP Master Never beat it I'm getting closer I'm playing it on my Playstation Portable via emulation. I don't have the space to collect actual consoles as it needs a separate room for that.
Oscar Torres Yeah it's a pretty long game for a NES title. I'm actually playing the game in SHMUP mode. When you beat it, they give you a PW which allows you to play all the SHMUP stages in order from the beginning. I'm going to capture a 1CC run. I'm almost there!
I spent 60 bucks on MUSHA several years back after watching CGRs original review of it, and it was the most expensive cart based game I've bought (at least since the days when I bought carts new). I felt bad even spending that much on it. I've gotten other expensive carts like Megaman X-2 for 3 bucks at the thrift store, but MUSHA turned out to be a worthy investment at 60 bucks. Every time I think I might sell it, it gets even more expensive. And the emulators just can't quite nail it, so it's a hard one to let go of. I think I'll keep it. I still haven't beaten it. I love shmups, but I'm not that great at them.
lightsouthaha I enjoy the game a lot. I've made it to the final stage on normal. I get frustrated then go back to it every few months and get a bit further. It also should be said that I refuse to use continues on any shmup, so I'm talking about a 1 credit completion. Continues won't help much with MUSHA anyways, since starting with nothing on the later levels is almost instant death for me. I have it on virtual console and I've tried it on Fusion. I like playing stuff on the original hardware, which is why I collect. I have huge nostalgia for the Genesis. It was the first machine I bought for myself when I moved out from my parents.
I think I will buy R-type III, that game looks sick, I'm not good at Schmups but I really love them, also I have MUSHA on the Wii virtual console and It's awesome. I know the feel of spending a lot of cash for a game, recently I bought Haunting Ground for around 150bucks, but man I've wanting that game since I saw them on a hidden gems video and the price started to skyrocket from 100usd, now it's like 200usd. Why I did for buying expensive SNES games was I ordered a Super Famicom years ago and I bought the Famicom versions of the games, there are some that are equally expensive like Wild Guns but for the most part are cheaper like Dracula X or MegaMan X3. Also its getting harder to get american games with the labels in good shape. I just found your channel and I really like it, congrats!
The problem with Rendering Ranger R2 is it likes to crash between hard screen changes. I have a repro of the game and 4 different ROMs on a flash cart and all of them crash at random times. The only way I can play the game is to have codes from gamefaqs.com sitting next to me and put the code in for whichever stage I was on when the game decided to crash on me.
andyauthor2007 That's weird man. That has never happened to me. My Repro works flawlessly. Although I've had issues with emulation. What model SNES do you have? I have the SNES mini. Maybe that makes a difference?
These videos were ahead of their time. Really enjoying them. I wonder if you are still playing? A lot of new players over the past few years (myself included).
I really appreciate that. Possibly the best compliment anyone has ever paid me in fact. I put a lot of time, effort, blood, sweat and tears into all my videos from 2014-2019. Sadly, RUclips seems to dislike smaller creators, regardless of our quality, and continues to give us less and less options to grow our audience. I basically gave up after my Star Fox video at the end of 2019. RUclips wants you to release a video basically every day in order to stay relevant. It's algorithm favors lots of videos all the time regardless of their quality. So part time RUclipsrs like me who do this for fun (and put excessive amounts of effort into them) seem to get penalized for it. And ya know, I gotta work for a living, for real lol. So while I certainly enjoyed doing these videos, there isn't a huge incentive for me to keep going with it at the level I was. It's nice that a few of them caught on and got me into the 10's of thousands of views, but I don't know if I'll be coming back to this anytime soon sadly.
@@THESHMUPMASTER I've been watching shoot em up videos on RUclips for over a year now and just found your channel. So you are definitely right about the platform not being for the creators anymore. Regardless, I appreciate all the content you did make. Currently watching your thunder force IV video to help on my quest for the 1cc.
Thanks! I very much appreciate it! And yes, I tend to favor the 16-bit gen because SHMUPS were at their peak in terms of popularity at that time. So there are so many good ones to play. As far as favorite non 16-bit SHMUP, I'd have to say my favorite "modern" SHMUP would be an indie game called Hydorah. My favorite pre-16-bit SHMUP would have to be Life Force. Simply because I spent an inordinate amount of time playing it is a kid. I plan on branching out into more than 16-bit SHMUPS soon. In fact, my next video is on an 8-bit one :)
HAH! Strike Gunner doesn't look anymore impressive than D-Force, thought that hit box is probably more forgiving. $40, though? These resellers are some Vultures! And there's my good ol' friend, Earth Defense, the best coaster for your mug ever! LOL! I mostly grew up a SNES player, but the only SHMUPs I knew were Thunder Force and Arrow Flash (and Sol Feace on the CD). Excellent video, I now have some games to track down. And M.U.S.H.A.? I'm eyeballing that one. I can be fiscally irresponsible at times, but this game looks WORTH IT.
Well at least in D-Force you get to fight giant dinosaurs! And yeah, if you have some extra money to burn and can find MUSHA for under $200 (like I did) it MIGHT be worth it... It's a freaking great game! Some really interesting weapon mechanics too...
Once again, man--AMAZING video!! The quick clips and photos from the MO-COM and the local shops that you visited were really cool. Sounds like hangin' with the boys on that trip to Missouri was a total blast! Oh, and by the way, Westapo is just Gestapo with a 'W'. Don't ask, the name has stuck since freakin' high school. Sagaia- This game is really, really average. Like you said, "bland". I can't believe that it now sells for $30-$40. I remember picking this up from a local mom n pop video rental store that was closing down thanks to Blockbuster back in '99 for $3! I hadn't played it in years until I popped it in again last year just for the hell of it. Meh. But then again I think the Darius series as a whole is kinda meh. Gradius III- Can't go wrong with this one. Tough freakin' game, but that auto-slow down-- now that was a welcome feature...kind of. And yes, it was a SNES launch title. Twin Cobra- I've always wanted this game, but have never played it. I think it looks better than Fire Shark, which leads me to... Fire Shark- Dude! Am I the only one who thinks that this game is average as fuck?! People rave about this game all the time and I just don't get it. Are those bosses at the almost end of the stages? Or are they just big enemies? The music doesn't change to a boss theme. And the music, while catchy (at times), is really average and then repeats on later stages. And the graphics are bland too. It is a tough one, that's for sure. R-Type III- Man, this game looks great! I've never played it and kept eyeing it at one of my local game shops for $89, but someone ended up buying it. I doubt I would've ever paid that for a SNES game anyway, but I would totally buy a repro cart. MUSHA- Ah yeah, probably my favorite game for the Genesis. It's absolutely LUDICROUS that it goes for $200-$300. Hell, I've seen it go for $500+ on Ebay. Glad that you got a copy though, and glad that you like it. I plan on covering it at some point, and I would love to see you give it the treatment that it deserves. With some of your buddy's awesome Metal covers of the soundtrack, of course! Rendering ranger: R2- Oh my god. I want this game right NOW! It looks freakin' amazing! Who made it? I have no issues getting a repro of this. In fact, it'll probably be the next repro that I purchase. Thanks for unveiling this gem! Dude, keep up the fantastic work! I really hope that you continue to consistently release new stuff.
Wow! Thanks for the awesome comment man! And I totally understand your name now! lol Yeah, I dunno, Fire Shark just sat right with me. At first, I thought exactly what you did. I was like, eh, this seems kind of bland and average. But then I played it more and just started having a lot of fun. I enjoy the weapon system and the silly, steam punk type atmosphere the game provides. Frankly, it plays very similar to Twin Cobra, but just more fun and less of a slog IMO. And yeah, I really wanted to highlight Rendering Ranger because it is such an obscure gem. It seems like the only people who have heard of it are super hard core SHMUP/Run N Gun fans. The average retro fan doesn't seem to have heard of it, or if they have, they think it's just a Turrican clone. I talked about the guy who made it in the video, his name is Manfred Trenz. He is responsible for the Turrican series. The story behind Rendering Ranger is both fascinating, and tragic. I am really going to try and get a hold of the guy before I do my video on it because I would LOVE some insight from him about the game. Another thing I should mention about Rendering Ranger. It doesn't emulate well. Both on ZSNES and SNES9X it has major issues, some that make the game unplayable at certain parts. I'm guessing since the game is so obscure, and so technically complex, the emulators just aren't optimized for it. So a Repro is the way to go if you want to be able to play through the entire game without issues.
That game looks pretty interesting, although it's really hard to see much from that footage. You ought to consider capping it straight from the GC if you can :). And I have played through Rendering Ranger probably two dozen times and there are TONS of issues with both ZSNES and SNES9X. Although it does better on 9X. If you play the game on the hard difficulty on ZSNES you can't make it past the first stage because the entire screen goes black and green towards the end. Really bizarre. If you play on normal there are graphical issues on stages 2 and 7. SNES 9X also has some graphical issues here and there and the game has crashed on me several times. So yeah, there are issues with emulation for sure. I plan on covering them in my vid.
SHMUP Master Ah yes, completly forgot that it actually crashed on me a couple of times. Probably didn't notice the graphical problems. The footage isn't mine. If it was, we already had a ROM of the game. And capping it this way is a better proof of legitimacy. Hülsbeck streamed the game a year ago, but he deleted the footage of twitch and I can't find it anywhere else. And they are looking to release the game in some way. www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1103351o
Thanks for pointing me to that. I am always curious to see what Trenz has done. He seems to have these gems that either weren't released, or barely released (like RR). I am going to try and get a hold of him somehow... I'd really like to do an interview with him to get some more insight into his career.
Sagaia is my shit! Gradius III also my shit! My first Shmup I ever bought for the SNES Love Whip Rush! I've yet to beat. Darius Twin, Nice! Though not nice enough for the clerk to think he could get away with putting a higher price on it then what was already tagged. Who the hell thinks to say they were thinking about doing that at the register. R-Type III? Awesome is the best word. (I'm one of the few people who actually loves and consider Super R-type to be easier despite lack of checkpoints). M.U.S.H.A. kicks ass and yes The Guardian Legend is sweet!
Great video. Looking at some of those prices makes me glad I got some real bargains! R-Type 3 is one of my faves too, and MUSHA of course. Prefer the Saturn version of Darius II and really need to get Fire Shark and RR. Oh yeah, and the PC-Engine port of Twin Cobra I prefer to MD one. Subscribed!
Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it! And yeah, I really need to get a PC-Engine/TG-16... EVERYONE is telling me I need to cover those SHMUPS... So I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get one I think... *sigh*
Wow, I had Rtype 3 in 1994 and only made it to level six once. Unfortunately, I was in student flats and the electricity meter ran out early in the stage. Think I traded it in for about £3 for beer money :(
I've gotta get me a repro of that weirdo Rendering Ranger: R2 game. It looks fucking sick! I'm also a massive advocate for R-Type III. Fucking fantastic game! - Adam
Nice. Ya learn something new every day. I was never big on these types of games but I can always open up to the challenge even though I'd get my @$$ handed to me lmao. Ya know I got a life mystery I need to solve like badly..Its been driving me nuts for about oh 25+ years. I'm trying to put a name to game that I remember you keep flying over this same area until you drop a bomb inside a chute and it closes off. I think there was 2 chute holes you have to do this for in order for you to move onto the next area or stage??? I rented this game. Its faintly in my memory I for a second thought it might have been Twin Cobra but I don't believe it was. I swear to you it was an NES game...pretty sure cause I rented it along with another life mystery game that I couldn't remember the name to that game but I did finally solve that one back in 2007. That life mystery game was called RYGAR for the NES lol but this other game I just can't put a name to it but I swear it was like one of these top over flying games.
You know, it's been years since I've played Twin Cobra on the NES... but that almost sounds like something you have to do in that game... I wonder if anyone on here knows?
Dude, awesome video! I liked hearing your quick impressions on your shmup pickups, so I wouldn’t mind seeing more videos like this in the future, wink wink nudge nudge 😉 I never clicked with Vapor Trail. It’s technically good, and I agree it’s better than Strike Gunner (boring!), but for some reason, it just hasn’t grabbed me. Also, I suck at it. That first stage music, though! I maybe need to give it some more love. Definitely glad I bought it when it was $6 loose. I was also glad to see Earth Defense. I bought that CIB almost 20 years ago, for somewhere around $10. Totally worth it. Such a train wreck of a game, that it’s fun to play just because of how awful it is. I did a review of it a few years ago for the Review A Bad Game Day deal. Also: Fire Shark! One of my favorite Genesis shmups. That game has a near perfect difficulty curve, IMO, and that’s me saying that, always playing on default settings, and having never beat it, after all the years I’ve been playing. But it keeps me coming back, because it’s just so good. I don’t know that I’ll ever own an original R-Type III (nice score!), but CastleMania Games has an “R-Type Returns” preorder up now for a report that is boxed, and has both Super R-Type and R-Type III on a single SNES cart. If I’m not mistaken, it’s licensed as well, so I preordered that. It hurts my heart a bit to hear that you sold your Wii U to buy MUSHA, but I get it. I still love my Wii U, and don’t think the collector in me could justify parting with mine. Something about MUSHA you mentioned was the pod upgrade system: that’s been a staple of most Compile shmups, specifically, the Aleste series, of which MUSHA is a later entry. They kind of copped their own style with Blazing Lazers, with the purple orbs, since they developed that game for Hudson, IIRC. Either way, good stuff. That’s one, along with Gleylancer, Battlemania 2, Eliminate Down, and Grindstormer (or V-V) that I might have to settle for a repro, simply to play on original hardware. That, or using a flash cart.
Thanks for the lengthy comment and for subbing! I really appreciate it man! And yeah, I think I read your review of Earth Defense when I was working on this video because I believe we ended up having a convo about it on Twitter lol. But yeah, a lot of people have told me that this is their favorite video that I've done. I've been planning another one for... well, since I released this one back near the end of 2016! So yeah, I have already started capping footage and I have a stack of SHMUPS that I am ready to cover for another one of these videos (mostly stuff I picked up from MoGameCon 2017). I got so many games in fact that I may have to split it up into two videos. Maybe one specifically for NES SHMUPS and then another for Genesis/SNES/TG-16. We'll see... But thanks for watching! I really appreciate it! The channel is going to be busy this year!
SHMUP Master nice! I didn’t even look at the date, it just popped up in my feed, hehe. I scratched 3 more NES shmups off my list last night, so they’ll be in my next pickups video. Always fun to see when folks get closer to collection goals.
Worth noting that Gradius 3 now has two patches that help with the slowdown, one that converts it over to fastrom and one that uses the SA-1 expansion chip. The fastrom one still uses stock hardware, but still manages to drastically reduce slowdown, although the section with a billion bubbles flying around still slows down quite a bit. I haven't personally had a chance to check out the SA-1 version, but from what I hear it completely gets rid of slowdown. All it took was tripling the CPU clock speed...! Also if you want to really piss off SNES diehards, just say Super Metroid sucks ass and Mario is for children lol
Is Whip Rush really that expensive? I also bought the Japanese version complete in box for about $12 a couple of months ago (from a Japanese online store). Good to know that was a really good deal! The label on the cartridge needed some paper glue, but mêh. A lot of Japanese carts seem to have that problem. Ordered a Musha repro a couple of weeks ago for $25 with box and manual, because bloody hell that game is expensive... It still needs to arrive though. Very informative video! Definitely adding Rendering Ranger to my list. Well, a repro that is :-)
I don't know why but I don't like horizontal shooters and love vertical ones. Can't figure out why it matters. Will you be playing any arcade games through MAME?
pinfarmer I'm the opposite actually. Although I enjoy both. I just prefer horizontal for some reason. And I'm not sure about MAME. I try to stick to original hardware only. But you never know!
You should do a SHMUP Master video of Fire Shark! One of my favourites for the Mega drive :) And after that one you could do a video about Thunderforce II ;)
Yeah Fire Shark is now on my short list to cover. Although I got 3 or 4 games to go through first. Thunder Force 2 though... Meh. It's average at best IMO. At least compared to 3-5. I may consider it down the road but I'm not super interested in covering it in all honesty.
Darius Twin is NOT a port of Darius 2. Nothing at all to do with D2 or sagaia completely different, Darius twin is its own game entirely. Still cool vid, some nice pick ups ya got
An earlier version of Rendering Ranger, called Targa, was actually released for free, as a ROM. www.retrocollect.com/News/unreleased-super-nintendo-prototype-targa-rom-released-online.html I like the game. Really cool setpieces and good music at times, but sadly very unforgiving at times. Like that tiny tunnel you have to fly through.
Yeah I was aware of this version. I believe Manfred Trenz released it himself. It would be curious to see the differences... May be another thing I can explore when I do a full video on the game. And yes, there are some parts that are incredibly difficult. Although I have found that playing the game on normal is a lot more fun and forgiving. The tunnel stage though... Ugh...
It's really gratifying seeing young kids playing and enjoying retro games, I know I couldn't get enough of Hyperstone Heist as a kid. Right now I'm seriously tempted to hop across the Pond to visit Grumpy Bob's, looks like a real treasure trove.
@@THESHMUPMASTER , I am a huge schmups fan. Space manbow and Aleste 2 are among my favorites on MSX 2. You should check them on RUclips. Great channel you have, thank you!!
yeah i hate slow sampling rate genesis voice effetcs. one good game with higher rate voice sample is robocop vs terminator and testing 1 2 .....seega from comix zone intro lol
Strike Gunner is a good one. Altrough it is a original SNES title (and not a arcade port), it's very arcade like. Old school shmups are often intended to be repetetive. It has no slowdown either, and that's not common for such an early and sprite heavy game.
Rendering Ranger R2 the best looking 16bit home console shmup imo, it looks even better than Thunderforce 4.

O_O
Thank you for introducing me to Rendering Ranger. Game looks incredible.
Thanks for making a video on a subject that’s very dear to my heart. I have very fond memories of so many of these games
i agree Rendering Ranger R2 is the most technically impressive 16 bit game. also a great game, with great gameplay, and 0 slowdown. super underrated music as well.
This was definitely my fav episode of yours so far. Loved it!!!
Thanks!
"I HAD to." Luckily, SB is also a fantastic game ;)
Good vid, keep em coming!
ShmupShmupPewPew Thanks! And yeah man, it was a painful realization but worth it in the end 😆
i got truxton which is ok, nice cheat with pausing on bosses with the bomb explosion animation, it continues to deal damage making them autowin
gynoug too, hard. empire of stee was a favourite, with gba port. axelay is a great snes one i own
Another great video dude!
Haha thanks man! I've heard of it.. and I have a Turbo Duo headed my way before long :)
Michael Knight That's a great way of looking at it actually 😁
Weird as it is we never really played SHMUPS as a kid, but I am starting to get into it now. I suck something fierce at them but the 16 bit era was so fun with these. Great vid, good guide for beginners like me.
BTW, great video quality and you're not the only one who paid $$$$$ for MUSHA
Haha thanks man! Glad to hear I'm not the only insane one :P
Just found your channel and subscribed. Love your videos. Like you, I’m addicted to Shmups and I love the 8 and 16 bit era as well!!
Thanks so much! I appreciate it!
Nice pickups, cool calm and collected presentation. Love it, keep it up!
Thanks! I was wondering how people would react to me completely off the cuff. From the sounds of it so far, people seem to dig it!
You'll love Spriggan for PCE/TG-16.
Wow! That game looks incredible! Ugh.. I REALLY need to get a TG-16.... Just so damn expensive...
very cool presentation! lots of really interesting games here. definitely inspiration for my own space shootemup. will probably have to watch this again to really dig into the details. thanks so much for sharing! (:
Thanks man! I really appreciate it! And be sure and let me know about your game :)
SHMUP Master yeah! (: i've been working pretty hard on it. you can find out more here: drewvancamp.com/games/project-revolution/ - playable demo will be available in a week or so for those who sign up here: drewvancamp.com/vip
Just signed up. Looking forward to giving is a shot! :D
Of course Brasel would like a place called "Grumpy Bob's" :P Good choices on 16bit SHMUPs!!
Thanks man! The video isn't even live yet and you're already commenting! Woo hoo!
you do great work man, really good pick ups. you got me jealous and you now have me hunting for 2 new ones, thanks!
Thanks! And which two if you don't mind me asking?
Fireshark and Rendering Ranger. the 1st really surprised me it looked pretty fun and the 2nd I admit just looked amazing, im a fan of Turrican and Thunderforce how can you lose?
Exactly! Rendering Ranger really blew my mind when I first played it a couple months ago. Just an amazing spectacle. It has a few flaws which I mentioned, but no game is perfect. It's well worth picking up a Repro or Flashcart to play it.
I really enjoy your videos. Keep up the great work!
Thanks! I plan on it :)
MUSHA! My favorite. I'm very happy for you.
Thanks for pointing that out. That is awesome!
Guardian Legend is one of my favorite games of all time.
Kamaryu Kaiser Ditto! I'll be doing a video on it at some point...
Awesome!
Have you played Hydorah?
My Fire Shark defaults to easy as well.
could you do a video explaing your strategy to beat a hard shumup? for example, do you play first stage until master it, and only after master stage 1 you proceed to stage 2 and so on? do you record your game play so that you can carefully watch the video searching for enemy parterns, boss paterns etc? do you use joypad or joystick? do you make any modification to you joypad / joystick? do you reset the game when you die, so that you aways play with maximum power ups possible? sorry too long text, and have fun :)
sergio trajano Oh man, so many questions! And wow... what a great idea! I may actually take you up on that... 😆
I like The Gaurdian legend as well one of my favorite games on the nes. Very hard looking forward to seeing you cover it.
Oscar Torres Thanks man! I'm working on it now in fact 😁
Renovation made some great shmups
That intro is super cool man 😎
wow, 3000+ for rendering ranger! insaaaaane!
Damn, R2 look crazy good. The megadrive cough a lung with it
great clip as always!!
Rendering Ranger looks beautiful
Hey great video, I love shmups and especially the 16 bit generation.
Another Great Video!

Great video! Cool to hear opinions of some games I haven't played. I'm interested in Vapor Trail. 2p co-op and great music!
Yeah it's a fun game, especially in 2 player mode. Like I said, I had never even heard of it until I found it at the con. Happy that I did!
Nice vid, awesome channel! Seems like you definitely favor the 16-bit generation, but what is your favorite non 16-bit shmup?
In fact, my next video is on an 8-bit one :)
as a mac owner it saddens me that I miss out on so many good shmups (like hydorah) that are on the pc
awesome video. I need r-type 3 now!
And I totally understand your name now! lol
Yeah, I dunno, Fire Shark just sat right with me.
Sick video mate
Sagaia is my shit!
Gradius III also my shit! My first Shmup I ever bought for the SNES
Love Whip Rush!
Great video bro I really enjoyed it just like your like video just awesome mate
*sigh*
Great video! :)
- Adam
Yes, Tony kept telling me how much you enjoyed R-Type 3. I won't lie, it had a major influence on my decision to get it :)
I liked hearing your quick impressions on your shmup pickups, so I wouldn’t mind seeing more videos like this in the future, wink wink nudge nudge 😉
I never clicked with Vapor Trail.
Great video. Subscribed!
thanks for sharing
Oh shit I have strike gunner I had no idea it was worth anything
Is Whip Rush really that expensive? I also bought the Japanese version complete in box for about $12 a couple of months ago (from a Japanese online store).
Good to know that was a really good deal! The label on the cartridge needed some paper glue, but mêh. A lot of Japanese carts seem to have that problem.
Ordered a Musha repro a couple of weeks ago for $25 with box and manual, because bloody hell that game is expensive... It still needs to arrive though.
Very informative video! Definitely adding Rendering Ranger to my list. Well, a repro that is :-)
Yeah I'm going by eBay prices which are high. $12 for Whip Rush CiB is a steal IMO. Good find :)
true nostalgic
I don't know why but I don't like horizontal shooters and love vertical ones. Can't figure out why it matters.
Will you be playing any arcade games through MAME?
pinfarmer I'm the opposite actually. Although I enjoy both. I just prefer horizontal for some reason.
And I'm not sure about MAME. I try to stick to original hardware only. But you never know!
maybe its what was played most during the formative years. I just had blazing lasers and super star soldier.
Where’s ThunderForceIV(Lightening Force)??
really nice lookin video
Great video, when a new video coming ?
Thanks! And at some point this fall..
Amazing vid!
You should do a SHMUP Master video of Fire Shark! One of my favourites for the Mega drive :)
And after that one you could do a video about Thunderforce II ;)
Yeah Fire Shark is now on my short list to cover. Although I got 3 or 4 games to go through first.
Thunder Force 2 though... Meh. It's average at best IMO. At least compared to 3-5. I may consider it down the road but I'm not super interested in covering it in all honesty.
I found a Rendering Ranger copy on eBay for about $50.
But I don't have a Super Nintendo...
Yeah, there are plenty of Repro carts. It wasn't an original, that's for sure! lol
This is hilarious. So disappointed with Strike Gunner. XD
Sagaia is a great game.
Darius Twin is NOT a port of Darius 2. Nothing at all to do with D2 or sagaia completely different, Darius twin is its own game entirely. Still cool vid, some nice pick ups ya got
Are you a fan of “Last Resort” for Neo Geo?
An earlier version of Rendering Ranger, called Targa, was actually released for free, as a ROM.
www.retrocollect.com/News/unreleased-super-nintendo-prototype-targa-rom-released-online.html
I like the game.
Ugh...
Pretty sure only the main characters sprite was changed. It definitely not the original version with the handdrawn graphics.
It's really gratifying seeing young kids playing and enjoying retro games, I know I couldn't get enough of Hyperstone Heist as a kid.
Right now I'm seriously tempted to hop across the Pond to visit Grumpy Bob's, looks like a real treasure trove.
Man, just found ya channel, siiiiik?!!:"$#@!!!
yeah but the wiiu dont have musha on it
soooo it was a good choice lol
Its on the Wii VC shop, actually
MCHellshit i play it on my everdrive 😉
I hate that term SHMUP those games were called shooters back in the day or Shooting game in Japan.
Yeah, I agree. But now days we need a way to differentiate them somehow. So SHMUP it is! :P
Dude... Thunderforce IV ???
Oh, I covered that thoroughly in 2 other videos 😉
@@THESHMUPMASTER Allright... Nice 👍
