      To be fair however, Space Megaforce had a somewhat bad export for Americans as the original Japanese version actually had an extended intro showing us the pilot, along with the cute anime girl, as well as a similar song to Blue Monday by New Order, along with a FAR better ending sequence compared to the US version.

    really, with the japanese exclusives taken into account, the snes has better shmups than genesis, or at least equal. snes most technically impressive shmups have the most action on screen with no slowdown in the most intense moments (nothing touches Rendering Ranger R2's action, and space megaforce, etc) insanely underrated shmup system

  • @Bloodreign1
    @Bloodreign1 8 лет назад +18

    Super R-Type over R-Type 3? That's insanity. :D
    I do like SR-T, but I prefer R3 myself as it's pacing is a little better, checkpoints exist, it's graphically a bit better than Super R-Type, and everything in it is exclusive to it.
    One day I'd like to see you do a list of Japanese shmups for the SFC, MD, and the PCE, stuff like the Twinbees, and the Parodius games, as well as the Cho Anikis really might make for an interesting list. And for the MD, stuff like the Thunder Force games, and Eliminate Down (it's good, but Thunder Force IV devastates it, as well as any other hori on the Genesis, including my beloved Darius II. Fire Shark remains my top vert for the Genesis/MD though).

    • @GameplayandTalk
      @GameplayandTalk  8 лет назад

      Yeah, there are a lot of traits of Super R-Type I enjoy more. Things like the graphical style, music style and quality, etc. The checkpoint system is without a doubt an issue, but I've been playing the game for so long it's not an issue for me.
      I'm planning on eventually getting to a Genesis video, but it's going to be a while. It will be a daunting task.

    This is the best format I have seen to cover a genre quickly and effectively. My only wish is that you could have covered all the Japanese titles also or possibly in a separate video to avoid it being too long? I strongly encourage you to do this again. Nice video. Refreshing to see a list that doesn't have Axelay and Space Megaforce on top. I had the same experiences with each, with Space Megaforce feeling too long and drawn out with special effects that don't really help the game, and with Axelay only being fun for the horizontal parts but not fun enough to deal with the vertical stages.

  • @caiusmadison2996
    @caiusmadison2996 6 лет назад +2

    Axelay and Phalynx are way off on this list, imo, as they are fairly good experiences. Axelay for it's clever use of loadouts as a sort of armor as well as having the best default speed and evasion in shmups on the SNES. Phalanx for the awesome storage of built weapon sets that can be used as bombs to clear the screen, and it also had some of the highest rated music in the genre at the time so dunno about that average comment. Everybody raves about U.N. Squadron, but taking the shmup out of space kills it for me, so not that biga fan though I do agree it's an excellent time killer and plays well. Personally, I agree with Gradius being this high up on the list, but don't know why people prefer R-Type over it so consistently. Find those games to be too long or too unforgiving to casual players so my friends never want to play with me. That's a bummer, and the gameplay isn't as polished as many on this list.

    I respect your opinion, this is a very well done top shmups list on the system. Make more videos like this, please! BUT, I have to say, I've noticed a tendency to say that Super Aleste is overrated in general. Today's fashion is to say that Super Aleste is uncool. You have good reasons but... R-type games are only for the hardcore memorizer and not for frantic-bullet-dodger fans. Also, the slowdown issues in Gradius 3 pretty much ruins the experience, you should recommend the PS2 version.
    All games have its issues, obviously. But Super Aleste in #8 ?? My Compile fanboy heart is broken XD

    • @GameplayandTalk
      @GameplayandTalk  9 лет назад +1

      +DANMAKUMAN VGM Looking back at it I do wish I had flipped a few around. For instance, move Gradius III and Bio Metal up a spot or two, Aero Fighters and FP2K back a spot or two. I do enjoy AF a good bit more than SMF though. I like the more simplistic, straight-forward arcade feel with fast action that AF provides. I feel like I actually have to keep on my feet in that game, where in SMF I can play lazy and get away with it (among other things). It has just never been very engaging for me. But hey, tastes will differ, and I figured out of anything in the video, SMF and Axelay were going to be the most polarizing. Thanks for watching man!

    • @danmakuman

      The Aleste Games are before Gun Nac (Gun Nac in fact is a parody of their own game; Zanac). And that style of gameplay is what defines Compile's shooters from the rest. It's not recycled, it's the company's style.

    • @GameplayandTalk
      @GameplayandTalk  8 лет назад

      lightsouthaha I have finished Gun Nac. It's a neat technical showpiece, but honestly, I wasn't a big fan of it. After doing this video, I came to the realization that--asides from MUSHA--I just don't care for the "Compile Style". That's not to say they are bad games, they just aren't for me.

    • @GameplayandTalk
      @GameplayandTalk  8 лет назад

      lightsouthaha Aero Fighters does have a pretty distinct gameplay style compared to the Compile shooters. It's possible you may just enjoy that style more.. although I hear you, nostalgia/whatever you played first could definitely be a reason as well. That said, I'd much rather play Aero Fighters as well. But believe it or not, I'd much rather play Space Megaforce than Blazing Lazers. I did a playthrough of both that and SMF and I feel the later holds up much better. Both share many of the same problems ("problems" in my eyes anyway) but SMF does have the edge overall in my opinion.

    • @danmakuman
      @danmakuman 8 лет назад

      hahaha Take it easy yo,
      I played a lot of games from Compile, also more shooters from other companies of course. I really like the style... or recycled stuff, (you can call it the way you want) of Compile shooters, and yeah, its formula was used over and over again, but it's cool enough to entertain me. Not the best from them, that's for sure, but it has more content than AeroFighters IMO.

I do see what you mean when the hardcores come out of the woodwork to drop their opinions of your opinions and explain how you're wrong lol. I think I have a much higher appreciation for Strike Gunner than most growing up with a twin brother. It's also a beginner friendly shmup, good soundtrack, good visuals, yeah it's a little slow but the environments never really repeat and it has a decent story if you read the inst manual. My favorite part is the special weapons. You can pick what you want or find a weapon route to trivialize the bosses.
    Stage 1 Comrad Fighter
    Stage 2 Spray Missile
    Stage 3 Autoaim Vulcan
    Stage 4 Sonic Wave
    Stage 5 Atomic Bomb
    Stage 6 Anti Air Mine

Iron Tank being a weird one for me but now I kinda dig it. When you get spoiled by things like Jackal or Firepower 2000 it's hard to look at Iron Tank and see anything of value. Or I'm just developing old man appreciation.

There weren't many schmups at that time that 1, had a base weapon powerup system and the variety of secondary weapons while also allowing same screen co op play. Is it the best shooter? No, but, the benefits of Strike Gunner as far as I'm concerned, it's got both easy and hard settings for expert and beginner players, can play with a friend, on top of figuring out the best weapons for boss quick kills. It's no where near as punishing as R-Type or Gradius. It will always be my #1 from my childhood but I'd also still like to see its other note worthy features mentioned once in a while.

    When it comes to shmups, I would go with Genesis/Mega Drive over SNES any day. That grunge synthesized music that the Genes Mega Drive has was more fitting for a shmup than the rich sound than the SNES has, the Genesis controller is more fitting because of the bigger buttons, it gives the game more of an Arcade feel.

    • @GameplayandTalk
      @GameplayandTalk  8 лет назад

      +D. Will Shmups on the Genesis have a tendency to run faster with less slowdown overall, and they feel snappier too from a control perspective. That's not to say there aren't any sharp shooters on the SNES (on the contrary, there are quite a few), but the Genesis definitely has the edge in this area, as it does with a lot of faster-paced games in general.

      Response time between the two controllers is similar in same game ports. However, the music thing on Genesis, is hit or miss no matter what game genre you are talking about. SNES had a soundcard that nothing was able to match at the time, hence the incredible difference in music on it vs the competition. I agree that some of the music on Genesis nailed it way better, like the story of two Shadowrun games head to head, in which the Genesis wins super hard in the music department. Gradius 3 has a soundtrack that still makes my hair stand to this day on the SNES. It is better than the original soundtrack on the arcade, imho, though it is lacking a few tracks in our North American release.

Gradius III arcade mode is interesting because I tried it recently and ripped through the first 90% of the game without issue. There are tons of bullets, but man that slowdown just makes it so much easier to deal with. Of course, when I died I was pretty much screwed (Gradius tradition, heh), but I can see this being perfectly doable as long as you don't have to recover in the late game. Space Megaforce also seems uber-challenging on the hardest difficulty, but for irritating reasons--enemies are complete bullet sponges, for instance. Super R-Type does this too on its Hard and Pro modes, but at least your weapons are up to snuff so it's not an issue there. I'll have to put more time into other highest-difficulty levels with these games just to make comparisons.

      I think I have said it in other comments, but honestly I would currently put R-Type III even farther down the list. Super has some objectively odd design choices (no checkpoints), but when you know what to do its level design just flows so well. For me, R-Type III can be a slog in comparison. Love me some Firepower 2K. I need to do a run of that again soon.

    Glad I'm not the only one who couldn't get into Space Megaforce. For an Aleste game, MUSHA blows Space Megaforce completely out of the water, but comparing a SNES shmup to a Genesis shmup is kind of unfair since SNES shmups are like the kiddie pool compared to those on Sega's console.

      @@Vinicius-hs2rf No one was arguing that it's better from a technical point of view. Musha Aleste has better gameplay, better music, a better presentation and a more interesting art direction. It was also very technically impressive for a 1990 Mega Drive game compared to other games released around that time. What Compile managed to accomplish on the SNES where most shmup developers failed is impressive but it isn't without its concessions to keep up its speed.

    I played Gradius 3 and I really like it. The colour pattern is just right and didn't hurt my eye. The gameplay is also really awesome coupled with kickass music. I didn't mind the slowdown like most people here actually. Didn't bother me at all.
    Kinda understand why you rate Super R-Type above R-Type III. R-Type III is smooth and awesome but the music is kinda downgraded from Super R-Type and the bosses are such a bullet sponge it's such a drag. Super R-Type is plagued with slowdowns (since the level design is kinda claustrophobic unlike Gradius, slowdown is really deadly here), cruel checkpoints, and the bosses can melt within seconds with just charged shot, but for some reason, I agree Super R-Type is a bit better than R-Type III. We have a same taste here.

    • @GameplayandTalk
      @GameplayandTalk  2 года назад +2

      Yeah, while Super R-Type has its issues, I just find it to be a much more consistent package than R-Type III. For starters, the levels flow pretty well and the difficulty curve is much smoother overall. It also relies less on rote memorization (compared to R-Type III's Stages 4 and 6) which made learning the levels easier/more enjoyable to me. Like you with Gradius III, I never minded Super R-Type's slowdown. In fact, I think it helps alleviate the fact there basically are no checkpoints on each level and it gives me a lot more time to react to things. The biggest issue is the lack of checkpoints, and that's the biggest hurdle for new players to jump over. If I had to remake this video in 2022, I'd probably put both R-Types lower on the list, but Super R-Type would still be a personal favorite regardless. Anyway, thanks for watching, and I appreciate the constructive comment!

  • @hell-yeah8776
    @hell-yeah8776 2 года назад +1

    Super R-Type above R-Type III? Unironically, I agree with you with this one. From techincal and level design standpoint, R-Type III is superior (minimum slowdown and fair checkpoint), but I always feel that R-Type III is rather too slowpaced for my liking.
    I know it's down to taste in the end but R-Type III feels rather bland compared to Super R-Type according to my impression. A lot of Super R-Type stages are the embodiment of chaos that can increase your adrenaline. So much action packed in Super R-Type opposite to extreme memorization in most of the stages in R-Type III.
    I guess Super R-Type is my kind of fun in a way.

    • @GameplayandTalk
      @GameplayandTalk  2 года назад +1

      Yeah, I totally agree. R-Type III has some moments of greatness (Stage 2 and 3 are solid with constant action), but many of the other stages are slogs requiring hardcore memorization (4 in particular). Super R-Type has a lot going on in general and is just fun. Reminds me a bit of the first R-Type in that way.

    Of course this is your opinion, but Axelay and Super Aleste should be much higher, and Super R-Type, while very good, cannot be above R-Type 3 (which has close to no slowdown). In Europe we also got the amazing Parodius, and the pretty good Pop'n Twinbee. As for Japanese exclusives, Macross Scrambled Valkirye is a must-play, probably the best shmup for the sytem. Overall I don't think the SNES is so bad for shmups

    I'd have Super Aleste/Space Megaforce higher up the list - though I agree the levels go on for too long and some graphical tricks are unnecessary (though level 2 is a great use of Mode 7). Glad to see Firepower 2000/ Super Swiv get some love. I'd move it up the list a bit too. The slowdown in Gradius 3 and Super R-Type just puts me off too much which is a shame. I don't mind some slowdown but it gets a bit excessive especially in Gradius.

    I think why a lot of people (myself included) put Axelay much higher is the atmosphere the game creates. In the same way Contra 3 will use set piece moments to make you feel like you're really in a sci-fi action movie, Axelay does that with the top down levels. Seeing the tracer fire spurt up in the city level adds layer of immersion you normally don't see in shooters. I respect something like Raiden for its precision gameplay, but Axelay... excites me more.
    I'm willing to be more forgiving of Space Megaforce's placement, as the game is clearly just an indulgent love letter to those that played Zanac and Blazing Lazers and no one else. It's a Compile thing.. 😛

    • @torgogorgo1888
      @torgogorgo1888 7 лет назад +2

      SMF is my favourite on the SNES and I haven't played Blazing Lazers/Gun Nac. Not a big fan of some the the short levels, but I love the weapon system and it's as smoothe as any SNES shooter I've played.
      Raiden kind of stinks but I don't hate it. The fact that it's multiplayer makes it kind of ok as not many are. Strike Gunner is as well and runs better...but I just found that one to be even less interesting. Just completely bland.
      Also not sure how Super R-Type is that high without a lot of nostalgia influencing the decision, the slowdown is among the worst on the system, ruins a lot of the flow and frankly R Type III just seems to fix everything wrong with Super R-Type.

    • @GameplayandTalk
      @GameplayandTalk  7 лет назад +1

      Slowdown was normal for the time and as such it doesn't phase me much. And to be fair, the slowdown in Gradius III is far worse, yet I still thoroughly enjoy it (I rated it nearly as high). In the case of Super R-Type, if you crank the difficulty up, you will be glad the slowdown is there. Comparing it to R-Type 3, yes, they made improvements in that game (checkpoints, better animation, more attack options), but I also feel they regressed in other areas. The visual style shows less consistency and is less gritty overall (bordering on cartoon-like at points), the sound effects package has taken a hit, and some of the stages are slogs to get through. I also don't find most of the music all that memorable. R-Type 3 is really strong at parts, but at others I find it to be a serious case of style over substance, whereas Super R-Type manages to balance that much better overall.

    I was expecting Axelay to be in a higher position, but I respect your opinion. About Bio Metal soundtrack, the US version has an awful selection of musics indeed, but the japanese soundtrack it's just awesome! It really makes a difference in the gameplay. About Gradius 3, I think its overrated, but I really like the Gradius series in general. Also, I think I consider R-Type 3 better than Super R-Type, but about UN Squadron, I totally agree with it's first position. The game is great, even though I think it is too hard.

    • @GameplayandTalk
      @GameplayandTalk  7 лет назад

      Yeah, U.N. Squadron has an extremely rough difficulty spike on the second to last level. Up to that point I have no problems with it difficulty-wise, but that second to last boss is just a major pain to deal with. If I don't defeat it the first or second time I get to it, I usually just power off the game.

    Hindsight is a funny thing. So is revisiting games as time goes on. For those that have watched this already, after playing through some of the games on the list, I would re-order the top seven or so. I have finally finished R-Type III (not something I ever thought I would be able to do), and while I am enjoying it more as I complete it repeatedly (I've finished it four times now and have gotten halfway through the Advanced Mode loop), I would kick it back a couple of spots due to the irritation and frustration that comes along with learning it. Most people won't have patience for this and the ranking needs to reflect that. I got a lot of flack for Super R-Type, but its levels are much more open, and while it has brutal checkpoints, it has varying difficulty levels and is much easier to learn overall. I also find its sounds, music and visual style so much more appealing, akin to R-Type II the arcade game that it was somewhat based on. With that, Super R-Type and UN Squadron remain in their current spots in my eyes after giving them repeated playthroughs recently (and Super R-Type in particular is going to get its own new Let's Play on this channel). I gave a little too much credit to Aero Fighters originally and I think I would personally bump that back a few spots too. It's still good, but Gradius III should have been in Spot #3, then BioMetal and Firepower 2000 in the spots after that. They are simply more interesting games than Aero Fighters, which again is still fun, but kind of limited in scope in comparison. Maybe I'd place R-Type III after that thanks to it making the player feel like they are banging their head against a brick wall.
    And yeah. Sorry to everyone else--Space Megaforce is still boring as hell.

    If Parodious had gotten a North American release, where would you put it on this hypothetical list of 20? Where would you wedge it in if you could?

      I'd probably put it pretty high up. Top 5? Top 8? I'm not quite sure. I do enjoy the game but don't enjoy it as much as traditional Gradius games.

    Bio Metal's American soundtrack is baffling to me on multiple levels. The most obvious one is "what does the music of Euro House act 2 Unlimited have to do with space battles", but the most headscratchy one of all is why in gods name they would've put tunes like that in the version released in a country that has had a very shaky and unfavourable history with electronic music as a whole until the last decade, give or take.
    In my own opinion, as a fan of electronic music- and especially electronic music from around that period of time- the converions aren't too badly done, nothing spectacular or mind blowing but god knows they could've been worse. And, hell, it's not like stuff like that CAN'T work in a shooter- Viewpoint (the original Arcade version specifically), R-Type Leo, and every DoDonPachi game passed the first two prove that pretty nicely- but the fact that it's recogniseable as something that existed in pop culture first, with no direct ties to what it was being used for, that make it stick out like a sore thumb. It was a license seemingly for licenses' sake. Crue Ball had a similar deal going on, but at the very least E.A. tried to form some sort of connection between the originally independant work Twisted Flipper and the 11th hour license from Motley Crue- it didn't really work in the grand scheme of things, but the minimal effort was there. On the other hand, Activision seemed to be coasting on the idea the game wouldn't sell unless they attatched music by a well-known group to it, damned if it fit. In this case, the one-two punch of music in a style that was massively unpopular in America at the time, and by a group who's only known presence in America outside of the far smaller rave scene would've been as "the guys what done did the Hockey music".

      +DeconTheed92 I can't comment on the state of the dance music scene at the time, but I agree that the choice of music was (and still is) baffling. The funny thing is, I don't mind it at parts of the game--it even fits at certain moments. It's weird. But yeah, it was definitely one of those cases of licensing just for the sake of licensing. Ugh.

    I have every game in the top 10 except Aero Fighters. I knew I should have picked that game up when it was $100. At the time I just couldn't bring myself to pay that much for a game. For god sake now Chrono Trigger goes for more then that.

      Yeah, I've kicked myself on more than a few occasions because of how much prices have risen.. Aero Fighters being a prime example. Ugh.

    I disagree with a lot of stuff actually. I know it’s one man’s opinion, but I feel like you’ve been overly harsh with some games while almost completely ignoring flaws in your favorites.

      I find the flaws in my favorites tolerable, and my perceived flaws in other games not so tolerable. Sorry.

      It’s fine. Your video format was meant to quickly showcase each game with an overview of your opinion right?
      I get worked up over nothing sometimes...

      Yeah, that was mostly the point--sometimes opinions can be taken out of context or misconstrued as fact. Everyone is going to have their preferences, generally mine veer towards what made the top of the list. It's all good though, I appreciate the comment either way!
