This is so helpful!! It's my first time using SLOG3 on my Sony camera and after reviewing the footages I was so sad. I'm going to try to apply these options and see where it takes me. Thanks a bunch!
Who do I feel like you are my dad? It's so simple, soft, and chill in here. Thank you so much for the advice! Also, your image quality is insane. Hope to have your quality one day!
how does this effect impact the sharpness of the image? I would also assume it is miles ahead of VR Denoise within premiere? VR De noise seems to work for minor noise for me, but I notice a substantial loss of sharpness!
Just downloaded the Neat Video trial... Wow. I don't think I've ever seen a more instantaneous impact from a plugin. You should be getting commission from them Matt!
This is a really important tip for neat video and will dramatically increase the speed of it. I used to avoid using neat video even though the shot needed it because it would slow my computer down to an unbearable crawl. Here's what's happening. For some technical reasons I don't fully understand, Neat video works 100x better on an untouched, uncut, raw clip with no effects applied. You can't even make an in and out point because that slows it all down. What I do is when I find a shot in my timeline that needs noise reduction and instead of applying neat video right away, I make a quick in and out point on my timeline of just that clip and render a high quality pro-res version of just that clip . Make sure your clip is already color corrected/graded before you do this or it defeats the purpose. I know it sounds like a pain but nothing is worse than neat video working slowly. This method is really not that bad at all, the clips render quickly, and even with the extra steps it's significantly faster than straight up applying neat video to clips that have been cut and have effects applied. Next you need to import the clip you just rendered and place it on your timeline. I like to leave my original noisy video clip in the timeline, disable it, and then place the rendered pro res video on the layer above. Now you can apply neat video to it and be blown away at how much faster it works. Anybody who has experienced the dreadful neat video lag knows how painful it is, with this method your neat video clip can literally playback in real time without even pre-rendering. If you're confused just know that the main idea is that neat video works 100x faster on a video with no cuts whatsoever, no effects, no speed ramping, no nothing! So just render out a copy of the clip with effects, color, in and out point baked in so that when you bring it back into premiere, neat video interprets it as a raw untouched clip, because it is.
Agreed I shoot good videos but lacked real knowledge using profile setting I’m familiar with them for sure but not when it comes to over exposing and canceling out noise
you make great content, I like the way you transition between topics and offer some help. Ive been dealing with this issue, i have been color grading and adding luts to compensate. Thanks for the info
Hey Matt!! Maybe a dumb question but I've watched a LOT of SLOG3 videos involving the A7s3 10-bit coloring...what I have seen is many people suggesting that overexposing by that much is no longer necessary. I feel like I know your response based on this video, but just curious your thoughts with a well balanced 0.0 or 0.3 meter outdoors. Thanks!
Hey Mike! The choice is entirely up to you with how much you wanna overexpose but in all my testing and experience I've found that 1.7 to 2 stops over results in the least noise. Keep in mind that SLOG3 is pretty flexible which most likely contributes to people saying you don't have to overexpose as much.
I shot a lot of footage today all 2.0 stops over exposed and it is all so incredibly noisey that it feels almost unuseable. Help! Shooting on the FX3, slog3, raw through the atomos ninja v.
A) If we are using the phantom neutral lut, instead of the slog3 to rec709 by Sony, we are supposed to expose normally +0 , right? And B) first lut, then neat video, then colour grade? Or first lut , then colour grade , then neat video in the effect sequence? Thanks
It’s always better to error on overexposing (as long as you’re not clipping). It doesn’t lose any quality if you have to darken the image in post. Also you want to apply neat video before the color grade - although might be better to disable it while color grading to speed up workflow.
Hi Matt, Any tips for how to best sharpen footage that has neat video applied to it? It can sometimes soften the image to remove noise to the point it may look slightly out of focus. Any advice for how to best sharpen after adding the effect is highly appreciate. Thanks!
Weird question, I cannot see that pop-up box you got detailing the render time. The bar above my clip is red and I am unable to playback the video without it being choppy - so I know it is still rendering. Are you able to help me view how much time is left in the render?
Hi Matt, when i add neat video then my film wont export through media encoder i have to dismantle neat video then it renders out to export, any fixes on this?
My s-log 3 footage was properly exposed between +1.7 and +2.0 but was still noisy at 2.8 aperture. The image was cleaned up after stopping down to 3.5f aperture.
Hey Matt! Out of curiosity -- are you saying in your video to apply Neat Video after ALL Steps are complete? They generally state to do so before any lumetri effects are applied due to the constraint is causes by doing it after... Are you seeing different results?
Great video thank you for the help. Question is there a way to batch apply the same preset to multiple clips with neat video? Or do you have to apply the box to every clip?
Can your LUTs also be applied to S cinnetone? I know S cinnetone supposed to be already good with bo grading but sometimes I would like to see if can grade it more .
I played around with neatvideo settings and found that every time i try to use the box to set the noise reduction for anything thats above 5, the footage gets really muddy, like i cranked the noise reduction waay up. is there something i’m missing?
Try setting the quality to high and seeing if that helps. Otherwise you can also tweak the luminance slider in the settings which will reduce the noise reduction a bit.
If you're using a newer Sony camera like the a7siii or a7iv etc that can hit really high ISOs then I would keep shooting SLOG3 for simplicity's sake. Otherwise you could switch to S-Cinetone if you wanted.
@@whoismatt in my specific use case where dark areas make up most of the video (testing flashlight beams), S-Log 3 has not yielded good results with the A7IV. At ISO 3200 it produces significantly more noise than other picture profiles (or no profile). The highlights are also much less bright than in the other picture profiles which is not a good thing when trying to show the light as realistically as possible. I realize that my use case is very niche though. I even went as far as comparing the footage with neat video and S-Log 3 had several times more noise. I am not sure if I am doing anything wrong, but for very low light footage, S-Log 3 might not be very suitable.
I'm using an A7iv, and I just recently started using it. So far it's fantastic for most of what I do, and a fair step above when I had before. I do a lot of action shooting at firearms ranges, and lighting conditions can vary between bright daylight with clear skies to overcast nights when we do low light work. I don't think there is any good solution for scenarios where we're using night vision equipment other than adapting a night vision monocular, but it would be cool to be able to get clearer video when we have some ambient lighting. I'll try playing around with some settings, and see if I can work in some additional light when we want to take video, as well as play around with the picture profiles for the more extreme use cases.
@@Wolf_1775 In low light, I had the best results noise wise with PP02, but the highlights were also much dimmer. I actually prefer shooting in no profile at the moment because it has a good balance of noise and brightness. S-Cinetone is worth a look, too, but I am not good at grading it yet. I don't understand why you keep saying overexposed is "properly" exposed? Proper according to who or what? Certainly not according to Sony, and certainly not according to any technically correct workflow. If you actually "properly" expose (middle grey at 41%) and properly transform to your delivery gamut/gamma (likely REC709 2.4) with a CST or ACES or a technical LUT instead of randomly twiddling curves by eye, you don't need to go through these gyrations.

@@rsmith02 Why just do it the way Sony engineers designed it to work and use proper CSTs with one click when you can dick around with time-consuming, difficult to monitor hacks from random internet goofs.
I am getting banding in the sky.
If so reduce level of noise suppression , like turn off spatial and only use temporal denoise, etc
Nice moves :)
honest opinion... the "better" version is still grainny in my opinion. Try comparing it with just no PP, (PP0)
Me simple. Me see post u. Me thumbs up 👍
That footage look like 4 stop under expose, It hurts my eye, And when you tried to fix it, you just made things worse 💔.
Must be something wrong with this camera if light meeter shows 0ev and u r totally underexposed
This is how sony designed slog3 to work 🤷♂️
For a camera that has only 12mp, it's extremely noisy.
well this doesnt help at all because even with a nice well exposed content, i still have noise.
Slog is kind of a waste of time if you’re shooting specifically for web delivery. Just my opinion.
Why does it take you four minutes to get to the point
Premiere is just ok at this. Resolve gives WAY better results. Topaz Video Enhance AI also gives good quick results after grading is done.
