used to be all photos but now starting to take video too, on the basis that whilst the light isn't always good enough for my 180--600 to do photography, getting the shutter speeds for video is much easier so I can shoot more, stills in the day, video when light starts to drop. Actually uploaded a video from my z8 on to my channel the other day of Herons.
I am definitely capturing more videos along with still images. 4K/120fps video is one of the reasons I went with the Z8. I am still working on smoothly tracking birds in flight with the camera on a tripod. More hints on the mechanics of panning and tracking would be appreciated.
Hi Matt, Have shot wildlife for many years. About 5 yrs ago I got a mirrorless (Canon) and started introducing video into my shoots. It adds a whole new element to the art for sure. I live on V.I. also and believe I have seen you 'out there' - can't wait until March and the herring run starts, sort of the official beginning of my shooting year! lol.
After having the Z9 for 2 1/2 years now, I'm finally branching out with video. So good timing on this presentation, thanks Matt !!. Being born and raised in Victoria, I don't remember Island View Beach being that rocky, all sand when I was a kid !!
@@ericsmith9777 yes! Good timing eh, happy to hear it. Interesting to hear about island view. Lots of rocks with patches of sand depending on where you are. Still a nice spot for sunrise and sunset
@markmalasics3413 What specifically are you asking? @MattShannonPhoto describes the rationale for 4k video going into DX mode for more zoom without sacrificing image quality.
Another excellent video Matt, some great footage of the Shorties as well. I unfortunately haven't been able to get over to see the Owls this month. My Z9 has been at Nikon repair for 3 weeks and I haven't got it back yet. I bumped the camera and the Mode dial on the top of the camera it cracked and came off. I just got the invoice for the repair and believe it or not they charged me $1375 to replace the dial. I heard that Nikon is well known for over charging but I didn't think they would be that bad. Enough of my wining and I really appreciate all your efforts producing such interesting and informative videos. Thanks and I am looking forward to trying the video settings and tips. Have a great week and great shooting.
Auto focus continual is great for moving bird and such ,however when a bird such has a robin on a branch I tend to change back to standard. This allows the auto focus to stabling on the bird or deer it helps I think with the cameras rendition. That is not hunting it’s a pain to remember and won’t suite every one but in a hide it’s not a bad idea to use it this way.
Great video, I have the z9 but I’m having trouble getting it to record 4k @ 120 fps. I’m using a similar card to yours and have the settings but still it won’t seem to record in slo mo? It’ll do H.265 @ 2160p 30 fps and 60 fps but won’t seem to do 120fps. I’m obviously new to video so I’m sure I’m doing something wrong! Thanks for your time in advance if you have any help!
Thanks for watching and for your kind words! It sounds like you’re recording in 120fps, but the playback might be defaulting to 24fps, which could make it look like regular speed. To achieve the slow-motion effect, you'll need to slow it down during post-processing in your video editing software. Also, make sure your recording settings are properly configured for 4K 120fps. Double-check that the frame rate is set to 120fps in the menu and that your card supports the data rate required for this setting. If you’ve already done that, it’s likely just a playback or editing adjustment. Let me know if this helps or if you have more questions!
Thank you and yes, I touched on sound in the video around the 16:28 mark. I record both ambient and directional when I remember my batteries 😄. I have a stereo mic and a shotgun mic, both made by RODE. I've added links below: 🔗 Directional Camera Mic: geni.us/qfQ7 🔗 Ambient Mic for wildlife: geni.us/cwEv 🔗 Wireless mic for vlog: geni.us/GjbuP
On the off note question how do you determine what price of a photo you take ? Be it Canvas print metal print , paper print . Size wise and may I include i build my own frames at times . Size wise 16x20 24x36 12x24 11x16 . Just as general sizes range wise ?
Matt you always cover things other YT photographers don’t. Great video. How do you handle the difference in exposure between stills and video. I have a tendency to blow out my exposure when switching to video.
Hi matt, what settings do you have for g6 and g7 in the custom menu settings, ive looked at countless websites and i cant find any advice for wildlife and bird videography
Great, information-filled video Matt!! Loved that little clip referencing what you call your hat in "the great white north". LOL! I think that first came to light for me way back with Bob and Doug McKenzie(Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas) circa 1980. Love your teaching style and your images are amazing! I have just begun trying to shoot some wildlife stuff. I shoot with a Fujifilm X-T3 but right now don't have a long lens. But, that does make me work at getting as close as I can and/or sitting still for a while. My longest modern lens is the XF90mm f2(135mm FF). I do have an vintage Promaster 70-210mm and a Canon FD135mm f3.5 that I've tried in my backyard a few times with birds. It's ok, but lots of purple fringing. That long glass is so expensive! Anyway, thanks for the great info, have a rockin' weekend!
Hi Matt, great video again 😃......why don't you use an eyecup for the Z9. I have one for my z8 and its working fine, keeping the light out of your viewfinder
@@olavhofman1181 it’s funny you should mention that. I took that part out of this video cause I felt it was getting a little long but I have used eyecups many times. My eye cups always rip off my camera cause of how much I pull my camera in and out of my camera bag. Even the rubber O ring my Z9 came with wiggled off which was a huge bummer. I guess eyecups and Matt Shannon were not made to be together 😆
I think my only frustration with flipping back n forth with video and stills (Z9) is that vr sport and standard vr doesn't operate independently between video and stills. I've found that when Im handholding, standard VR is more stable in video but I use VR sport for stills. So when switching between the two, I have to take an extra step to switch the vr mode. Not the end of the world but a little bothersome kink
man I hope they don't put tariffs on video content :) Good video ! Can you set up the ninjaV to display everything seen on the LCD while doing stills too ? I know it's an expansive add, but vision and age, it could help me out if it could - I expect I wouldn't have touch screen on it. Just getting ready to add a z8 to the D700 and D750 I still use all the time.
Hi Matt will going to try my luck on that too one day and trust me will not prove you wrong my friend will try hard our aesthetics and our creativity and will give a best and outfit effort to extract photo out of this bro 👊
Great video Matt I have a question and I ask this question to all content creators interested in photographing nature and animals but I always do not get an answer or sometimes I get a very normal answer My question is can I benefit financially from photographing nature and animals because the problem is that many of these types of photos are sold for one dollar and so on What do you do? Do you do it just for fun and to create content? Do you sell them? Do you print them and give them to people for free? I really want to know that because it will help me start photographing nature and animals because I love it but at the same time I am hesitant
Why is it that nearly every photographer on YT insists on looking like a slob that can't afford a razor, has to wear their hat backwards, completely over-acts and none of them can give the same advice or instructions?

Ahh yes. Good old Island View. Have you tried Sidney or Portland Island? They got a lot of wildlife on those.
Excellent video and sublime photos. Greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪.
