      Time code is kind of old school and no longer necessary with modern editing suites (i.e. Davinci Resolve). With modern NL editing it's possible (if not desirable) to sync video using the audio. I've produced a great number of videos ever since 1995 and in those days time code was a necessity. Overall a great video Matt, and as a new Z8 owner I appreciate the over view of the video configuration menu. Keep up the great work young man!

      Hi Matt.Enjoyed your video.I just purchased a new Z8 3 days ago.I am interested in shooting slow motion wildlife videos in 4K.I have followed your suggested setting in the menu.Can you please tell me if using your settings will result in a slow motion video on play back?Or will I need a video editor to do so?

    I have to say Matt, compared to other folks on RUclips who seem to think they need to be loud and showy, you are an absolute delight to listen to and watch. Your voice and approach is calm, natural and well paced. So many times I have given up on those other videos, but in your case I watched to the very end. I am a Z8 user and like you, more of a photographer than a videographer, but wanting to learn and explore more of the video capabilities of my camera. Although I am very comfortable with my photo settings, I have been struggling a bit with which settings to apply in video mode, particularly the focus and tracking modes. This was extremely helpful and I look forward to seeing more of your videos in that regard. Thank you!

    My husband and I both have Z8's that we purchased within the past 6 mths. We have been trying to learn all we can about still wildlife photography and until now have been quite intimidated with even trying to learn how to make videos. This video is so awesome and easy to follow and understand that we are going to watch it again and set our cameras up the way you describe. Whatever is good enough for you is certainly worth trying! We absolutely love your channel, your videos, your storytelling and images! Thank you so much!

    Well done Matt! I know a little about video and how it works. I just don’t have the experience with video editing and have not made to time to dig into video production. I, like yourself, consider myself a photographer. Video opens a lot more opportunity for expression of what we love to do. Appreciate your sharing of video knowhow. You’ve inspired me to dig into a bit more! Thanks!!!❤

I’m glad to hear the video inspired you to explore it more! Let me know if you have any questions along the way. Happy creating!

    Great video Matt, I have been waiting for this one. I have been wanting to do some videos with my Z9 and my Z6ii and this is really going to help me. I took a ton of notes and I will be rewatching with my cameras in hand. Now all I have to do is learn how to do some basic editing.

Short-eared owls are such beautiful subjects-I'm hoping to get over to the mainland too, perhaps I will see you there! And 3 in Nanaimo? That’s fantastic news! I wonder if there are some at Cowichan Bay too...?

      @@MattShannonPhoto I have heard that there is Shorties at Cowichan Bay and also at Panama Flats in Victoria. There was also a rumor that there was one at the Englishman River as well. A couple of friends in Victoria have posted images from Panama Flats. Another friend was at Brunswick Point on Wednesday and said there was a few Owls there but the tide was a way out and the Owls stayed out near the water, he ran into another photographer that told him there was also Owls at Boundary Bay.

      Thank you! These videos are challenging for me to make. It’s easy to get lost in all the decisions required to make video look good. With photography, you can focus on specific topics like 'night photography,' 'long exposure,' or 'macro,' and build from there. Video, on the other hand, has a lot of technical and creative choices to make just to hit record and get quality results. Thanks for watching!

    I think there are a lot of us who have bought Z9 or comparable camera and suddenly realise it's video potential. I think you have found a bit of a hole in the market as a very few photographers prepared to share their successes and mistakes, while they are venturing. into Video.
    At the moment I suspect you are encountering most of the questions we are asking most days in the field, so just share that with us. But I think we all need some elementary post processing help and help knowing what to shoot to make a good storyline wildlife presents good pictures but making a story is difficult. Some basic equipment advice might be useful too
    Many thanks,

    I use many of the same settings except that I shoot video in log. This allows for a better dynamic range when you do colour grading. It does seems awful at the time of shooting but when you need to push it, the results are better than flat profile. Also using some good quality LUTs make a big difference when shooting in log. Nikon's own free LUTs don't work nicely to me so I purchased a custom one and is great.

    To me, the narration track frequently peaks throughout the video, almost like the mic was overloaded or the gain was too high; feels more like a recording issue than post-production. I’m not saying that’s the case, just how it sounds to me. Fantastic content! Just sharing my thoughts. Thanks! and again, fantastic info you put out.

  • @mzlenses
    @mzlenses 2 месяца назад +6

    I’m assuming you don’t use an ND filter on your Nikon when filming since you have to switch between video and photo, and you control the exposure with the aperture, but keeping the shutter speed at 1/250 for 120fps. Is that correct? I’m always wondering about that, since I don’t want to use ND filters for my photos, but it’d be fine for videos (and using the same camera for both). Thanks for the video, very informative!

    • @MattShannonPhoto
      @MattShannonPhoto  2 месяца назад +3

      @@mzlenses you are correct! I should have mentioned that. I’ll sometimes drop my ISO down below 64 to allow my aperture to remain open for a nice shallow dof. Great question thank you.
