Megatron did resort to killing Optimus Prime as a last resort after most of the Energon he hoped to use to conquer Cybertron was destroyed by the Vok planet buster. After that and the threat of the Maximals coming from the present day Cybertron to arrest him, he switched gears to killing the early humans to change the outcome of the war.
Killing Optimus Prime was in Megatron's words "The ultimate risk." He knew the dangers, which is why after he found the Ark the first time he blasted the tunnel shut. It was a last resort, however, the fact that he would even attempt it showed Megatron would go to any lengths to achieve his goal, risking the existence of himself and his entire race. If he and the Predacons couldn't rule Cybertron, then nobody would.

Megatron did say he was unwilling to follow the plan set in the Golden Disc when he entered the Ark, hence blasting the tunnel to Ark shut after he first found it. When attempting to kill Optimus Prime, Megatron asserted that Cybertron was his to rule. Gathering up Energon and conquering the planet himself would give him a much better chance of ensuring he ruled the planet than if he rewrote history.
It is very likely that Megatron didn't care if the Predacons successfully conquered Cybertron if he weren't in charge.

Good thing he didn't share that with Terrasaur listening. The needle-nose would probably find a way to screw things up.

What’s more hilarious is that Megatron’s ending in the Transmetals fighting game actually acknowledges this, stating that Unicron did, in fact, devour Cybertron.

Yup... megatron in beast wars is clearly the most dumbest predacon there is... alongside with quickstrike, waspinator, and tarantulas... they're all fools... but the maximals are still brave except for rattrap... he's just afraid of the end of the world... but some of the maximals are just aggressive... like tigatron and dinobot... they only get aggressive when rattrap keeps on yapping... or when waspinator just learns new moves to destroy the maximals thanks to the spark of starscream...
I just love that Quickstrike wants to kick maximal keister so badly that he's cool with Meg's plan to wipe out all the Maximals, except that HE is a maximal protoform, so that'd include him as well. Whoops.
The only time Scorponok has outsmarted Megatron😂

Strangely, i would've expected waspinator to be the one to bring up rhe flaw in Megatron's plan.
Yeah, I think it would have just been hard to have him explain everything in that voice of his!
