- 19-year-old Matt Greenshields from Okotoks, Alberta is one of the youngest survivors of the disease in Canada.
Dawna Friesen talks to Greenshields about his fight with COVID-19, when he got sick and how quickly he deteriorated.
Greenshields wanted to go public with his story as a message to young people that they need to pay attention to this illness and not assume you won't get sick.

It's a real eye opener when you find out your not invincible. Take care of yourself and I hope your story reaches more people.
I'll just say how I'm feeling, I'm 17, turning 18 on Monday 😔, I started having diarrhea and a 101°F fever 2 days ago, thinking it was only a stomach bug or something. Then, when my temp went to 102°F I made my mom take me to the ER, which was last night. They drew blood, had me pee in a cup, did x-rays, and a CT scan and they said that my organs, including my lungs, look normal, which I don't have a cough or phlegm or anything. However, while I was there, my temp went to 103° and they gave me tylonal and motrin. They put me on a drip, however, because I was dehydrated and my heart rate was high, and also anxiety meds to lower it. Then they swabbed me and sent me home saying i would get results in 2-3 days. I don't know if I have it yet. The entire process took about 6 and a half hours and I went in at 2:30 AM. I'll come back and update it here when I get the results. I have no underlying conditions, so I'm confident I can survive this if I do have it, but it's still scary to me.
I really hope that you don’t get it! Get better soon!! ✌🏿
Please remember to update us ❤️❤️
Umm...I promised to update so here it is. I came back to the ER yesterday at 11pm because there was blood now in my stool and I was recommended to go back. I just spent nearly 7 hours here getting blood drawn, giving more samples, having another CT scan, and simply waiting for results. I tested negative for everything on their lists, Corona obviously, but it was found that I most likely have Ulcerative Colitis instead. I'm going to be admitted and treated here until I'm better, and since this is a chronic illness, I'll be given a permanent specialist and have to watch for flare ups from now on. It's not necessarily fatal, unless I let it get to that point, but it still a really sucky thing to have and deal with now. Idk if I deserved this in some way, or if the symptoms were a blessing in disguise, but I want people to know not to be afraid and laugh in the face of sickness and to just think positively. The only downside I see to this is that I might be missing my first college class on Monday and I might spend my 18th birthday here as well. 😔 Anyways, thanks for reading if you did, and although unrelated to the video, please get yourself tested at your local hospital, station, or anywhere offering tests if you have any symptoms and just stay in quarantine for the love of God. I know stores are opening, but cases are still rising, and I'd rather have this goddamn virus gone sooner or later rather than allowing this to just sweep our nation that we've been working so hard on to fix. I love you all ♥️
You got this
Mima 471 thanks for the update. i hope u fell better soon
at the end of the day, even if this young man had mono or not, I'm glad he made it through🙏
This reporter should be an actor, so flawless
Im 19 years old and just found out yesterday that me and my boyfriend have coronavirus, its scary especially for me since i have asthma. My boyfriend is on his 10th day of symptoms and I am on my 7th.
Praying for a speedy recovery
denny george thank you soo much I appreciate it❤️
Take care , hope you have a speedy recovery
chhu _ Thank you soo much
Stay hydrated, and make sure you're using your albuterol. That really helped me.
Thanks for sharing your story! All the best on a speedy recovery 👍
i don't understand why there is so much hate in the comments. the bottom line is, no one is immune/untouchable - especially the younger crowd who still don't seem to take seriously. anyone mentioning he had mono - okay, yes underlying issue - but who doesn't have SOME underlying issue (whether known or unknown) these days? or, you could pass it on to someone else who is vulnerable. look at the bigger picture people! stay home and wash your damn hands! i want to be able to see and hug my family at christmas this year. please!
Bottom line is there is no virus, just dumb sheep to blind to see behind the scamdemic ,you're being sold out by Trudeau to gates foundation for mandatory vaccines ,that the worlds health organization claim not to work ,stated back in 2019 in a summit for vaccines .
You can't pass a virus ,doctors for viralogy all over the world already said there's only three that live like that ,
@em745a that's what i said/meant hence why we all need to be careful. i'm sorry if that was unclear. my point was that i hate when people say "well they had some underlying issue" and all i think is who cares? don't we all?
@em745a "underlying issue" is a broad term. it can mean anything from asthma to something like this kid with mono and he didn't even know. i'm only trying to say you don't know what someone does or doesn't have and to be mindful and careful regardless. about 6/10 people i know have something like asthma or are vulnerable. i hate how people say "well it makes sense since they already had some underlying issue." it doesn't matter - we are all at risk.
and why would you ask me that? i never said anything about not caring about people dying. if you're looking to argue just for the sake of arguing i'm not your person.
Sirioslee lol
I'm 16 years old and I tested positive today. I'm scared.
how you doing now?
@@Sizzela I'm still in my room but health wise I feel okay physically. It's been one of the worst times for me mentally but sometimes I go out to get fresh air
@@Lou-nl7el how bad is it? Does it feel like just the "regular flu" like those people say. I'm kind of scared not going to lie, i hear it can be like 10x worse for some and some barely feel anything
@@kmax7521 I'm one of the ones that barely feel anything. I have minor fatigue and headache but they're so weak that I can't even tell if they're symptoms from the virus or just the fact that I'm in a hot room all day and not getting a lot of sleep. I've never had the flu, but this is not nearly as bad as even the common cold based on my own experience so far. If you're my age and have no preexisting conditions then I wouldn't be super afraid (even though you should obviously still take precautions).
@J I got better, thank you :)
I now see this kid everywhere there's a covid 19 commercial
@panfriedd hey it's been 2 months just checking to see I'd you still think its propaganda
@panfriedd ah ok well if I remember I'll come back in another 2 months and ask you again 🙃

"This really CAN happen to ANYONE." - Teen Survivor. How scary. Thank you for telling your story.
And yet another sheep to blind to see behind the smoke screen .no virus ,you're being sold out by Trudeau to gates for mandatory vaccines that are proven not to work ,claims world health organization in a summit for vaccine back in 2019
No, statistically at his age is a exception, les that 0,01%. In Sweden average infection rate in 40-50 years and death is 80 years so mathematically speaking is lowest chance possible to have compilations.
Thanks for sharing Matt,it is much needed in helping others, all good health and happiness to you🌅

I’m 18 and I had it
What exactly happened? Was it that bad?
@John s , so are you going to tell us if it was mild or not? did you get all the bad symptoms? Update us man
You should be okay by now and remember to get physically fit. Stay away from junk food also.
I’m 18 and I have it y’all. I feel like my symptoms were a bit mild and all. The first few days I was extremely tired & had a cough, body aches , and I think a little fever . Six days into having it , I lost my taste & smell. My nose and eyes are now burning , which is a bit annoying but Covid is not that bad . I think it depends on your body & all tbh. Just continuously take vitamin C , drink lots of fluids , & rest up.
Hey guys guess who has it your boy this guy I don't feel anything yet my brother is coughing and my mom's sick tested positive a few hours ago the only issue is the anxiety is killing me and I just feel off no cough so I'm really worried but I hope it don't get worse

The hardest part that happend to me was not being able to breath at night i would get up and trying to get some fresh air outside then i would get like coughing attack and it felt so bad i couldn't stop... I feel better now but im still positive for covid 19. My son he is 2 yrs old and now they want to test him as well this monday. Hope he don't get close to what i went through with those symptoms in case he test positive. To be honest i really hope he gets negative but thats too much to ask cause he's been with me all along. Its sad but i try to stay healthy and have vitamins all the time. I hope the world 🌎 get better soon. Last night I just got Covid at 17 years old
I am 25 and I had covid19 like 5 months ago. I felt like it was a weird flu, no runny nose, no sneezing, just sore throat and I didn't cough that much. It was getting worse when I woke up in the morning. I felt weak and tired and my joints hurt for around 4 days then everything disappeared. My throat got a weak extra to recover though. I lost my smell sense for a month. It returned back gradually. I still smell fire sometimes even if there is nothing burning.

Thanks for sharing.big help
@@sisi6776 Hope you feel better now! Sorry for late answer! I just took paracetamol. Avoided aspirin or ibuprofen. Relax and have a good sleep. That's it! Symptoms severity differ from a person to another but the best to do is to stay 2 weeks at home since the symptoms appear.

Mono can be dangerous too. That virus ruined my life.
This was a assignment for me
I got Covid-19 at Barclays Center Brooklyn NY, On Monday March 2th at a WWE Monday Night Raw Show. 17K people in attendance that Night. I am sure many of them die Weeks later, So sad young and old it didn’t matter BE GRATEFUL EVERY DAY.
They only care when it affects them or their family.
This is misleading, the title should be "Teen survives super infection".
This comment section is strictly for those who consider themselves of the current timeframe.
i read in the comments someone said "He had momo a chronic immune disorder" i dont know, does anyone have anything to debate with this? i have nothing to do with this btw just minding my own business and curious to reading opinions.
He said had MONO as well. That in itself is why his symptoms were so bad... if he didn't have MONO then it would probably just be cold like symptoms or none at all.
@em745a What you mean logic? The thought shouldn't stop there. It is true the virus will exacerbate people with existing condition. But, we don't know if the virus remains dormant in healthy people or people who don't show symptoms at all. If anything, we should be cautious because 1) this is a new virus, we can't just brush it off 2) scientists and medical experts are still learning, we all are. 3)Just because your body creates antibodies, doesn't mean you won't get reinfected because coronavirus has many strains. 2nd reinfection might be much worse. Spanish flu did exactly that during the 2nd wave where lots of healthy, young adults died. Last thing is to put on a tinfoil hat and just simplify everything, just because you think it is just a 'flu' when it is not, or that is minor. When there are a lot of unknowns, we all should be cautious considering the virus just entering the 2nd month in North America.
Lmao mono is nothing
@@duniyadr8946 Mono can in some cases cause pneumonia and even hepatitis. Although rare, I feel that covid could escalate the chances of it becoming worse.
@@pain1596 I posted my comment 2 months ago and now more evidences showing the virus eventhough is hard on old people, the younger ones are suffering long term chronic condition or trigger new illness like weakened organs, constant fatigue, etc and also the term long haulers where, though recovered, it persists and lingers around for months. Well, stay tuned!
@@duniyadr8946 ah I see, thanks for the follow up 👍

what a ridiculous story - the kid also had mono. Glad he is ok but does not translate to the general pop - irresponsible reporting.

Zzzzzzzzzzz you can do nothing to convince me that it is dangerous for healthy robust people, this kid was compromised and I'm sure there's underlying behavior that contributed, a kid in college come on people, he probably drinks and doesn't sleep enough, he had a weak immune system.
