That's the true purpose of petabyte project

A lot more than that. Shot in 8K because we all have 8K TVs and demand 8K content of a tech show.
This is bananas. And super neat. I would like three of them, please.

Hi
Quinn!
This is a Boner video......... In a good way, IE: it gives me chub. I've got a dell r710 and it's like a whole new world of the hobby. I can see how one would get sucked into this. Actually I have seen it, my friend and his friend are the ones that got me hooked on servers. So far I only have one rack mount 3 game capable desktops and 1 game capable laptop but networking it all is so fun!
Linus records are 8k 60fps
Linus uploads at 4K 30fps
My internet handles 1440p
My display can show 1080p
I watch at 720p
My eyes can see 480p
My brain can handle 360p
I cannot believe this blew up. Just cannot.
i laughed pretty hard at this not going to lie
Fair enough.
Hahahahahaha....
you deserve lots lots lots more of Likes
My other brain can handle 27p
Honestly this is the best video I've seen from Linus in a while. I like when he does this type of video. He's sharing knowledge that a lot of people would never share. It's great to see how others network and solve issues so you yourself get even better, even if you feel confident. There are so many ways to set up a network. The more you know the better obviously. Thanks for sharing guys.
Absolutely. The essence of this video.
And then we have fucking retards in this thread complaining about 'overcomplicating shit' and 'unnecessary complexity'.
Your comment's likes is cursed
@@jamilmariano5557 Seems to be working
What I liked most about the video is getting a glimpse of how the team works together. By showing their work flow he showed how they would have to communicate to get all this done, and that's waaaaay more informative than anything tech related, which you can just read about and know. Interacting with other humans, with opinions and who have bad days, is a lot harder than learning how a server works, and him showing this is very enlightening to anyone struggling to manage a team of content creators...or a team at all really.
Wait a secend , Avatar was shot in 2k , Bladerunner 2049 was shot in 3,4k, Revenant was shot in 6k , Linus shoots in 8k ?
It’s because they are shooting in an 8K capable camera from red, which is one of the few today that can shoot in that resolution.
Why would they shoot in resolutions that even Hollywood filmmakers don’t normally use?
To put it simply, it's for future-proofing the content, you’ll see having 4K footage today will make it watchable for a good couple of years, but having 8K raw files means they can go back in the future and re-render in 8K, meaning the footage will be good for even more time.
Now for Hollywood movies such as you mentioned, today they are shoot mostly in 3k~4K resolutions, in some cases even less like 2.3k, but why would they go low when there is bigger res available?
As the Cinematographer Steve Yedlin says, resolution isn’t everything, cameras from Arri goes up to 6K, which is less than Red although Arri has a better sensor, which generates better footage, that’s why Arri cameras are so popular in Hollywood studios, plus Steve argues that even footage shot in 2.3K can be upscaled to look as good in a 4K Blu-ray master as a movie shot in 4K and mastered in 4K. But of course, you can upscale up to a certain point until the footage starts to look bad.
For reference look Planet Earth from BBC, it was shoot in 720p, which at the time was high end stuff, but since then the display technology improved quite a bit, so they can upscale the footage, but past certain resolution will look like shit, the Planet earth Blu-ray master is up to 1080i, in the next few years will start to look dated.
Compare that to Baraka which was filmed 13 years earlier, it was shot in 65mm film and can be scanned to very high resolutions without losing any quality, that's because film is naturally high res, while digital will be stuck to a certain time frame of the technology.
@@unit1g This is stupid, we would be fine with 480p videos, its just another reason to overcomplicate shit and create unnecessary complexity
@@Spittin_Bars 480p..? Who's "we" in your case..?
@@Spittin_Bars 720p is fine to me
@@Spittin_Bars Maybe you would be. I'm not entirely happy with 2k anymore. I paid a lot for a quality 4k monitor and can really tell when I'm watching a badly done 1080p or worse video on it.
You have to admit Linus and team put a lot of godamn effort into all the channels and they definitely deserve more subs!
lol
Too many people watching reaction videos, makeup tutorials and God knows what other garbage exists on RUclips. Unfortunately that's what passes for entertainment these days.
Travis
I get bored, and cable tv is just reruns. Better to throw money at patreons and youtubers who actually make content you like.
Definitely, especially when a mediocre/below mediocre channel from country can have 7 million subscriber then this should have more than double of that.
Why does Linus need so many servers just to store videos? Just post it on RUclips and delete the dam data. If RUclips went down and you lost your videos so what? There wouldn’t be another site anyway like RUclips where Linus could suddenly thrive to the point he’d need his old videos to repost and no one would wanna watch old videos anyway . And RUclips will probably not go down anytime soon so just ditch the local servers Linus stop trying to pretend your a legitimate large tech company with your “servers”. Datacenters with storage servers actually serve clients your videos are hosted on RUclips so Don’t waste money on servers. Oh wait your sponsored so you pay for nothing

I was like a 2nd tech guy that a lot of the teachers would say we’re more helpful that the main tech support and I would run around the halls teacher to teacher helping them with technology problems. One day I found my mom uses Google Drive and she downloads the files whenever she needs to use them and never opens it again after she downloaded it because she never knew that they were saved. She had 30+ copies of every file saved no joke!

Stabilization was good with that gimble... But autofocus and brightness were lacking
Can we get more details on the transcoding, syncing, etc.? I'm particularly interested in what you use for the syncing
DoctorX17 in a previous video he talks about Beyond Compare
He's using Peer Sync
Autofocus and brightness would be the phone's fault not the gimble
Yeah the footage would've been better if they used the Note 8. That phone alongside the Pixel 2 have the best video stabilization of any phone right now.
The auto transcoding is just a built in feature of Media Encoder. I have no use for it myself, but you can tell it to watch a folder and auto transcode that with whatever settings whenever a file is put in there. I personally want to know about that syncing software too though. That is exactly the sort od setup I have wanted to build at my house for a while to make sure our stuff is safe, but without the concern of putting it in someone else's hands.
They spend thousands of dollars to invest in a petabite to archive footage so they don’t have to download the video and have a lower quality. The dedication Linus Media Group has to there production quality deserves so much more respect

You son of a bitch stole my comment
Yep
I can't help but think all of this is just an excuse so Linus can create an over-complicated networking and server setup.
That isn't even a particularly complicated server and network setup. If they really wanted to do that they would build a high availability cluster for the hot data so they could sustain a full server failure without impacting work in any way.
you clearly dont have a clue of what's required to run a media company
IMO the video quality is average. I see little point in shooting using a RED camera in order to upload to RUclips... and the server set-up is sensible with redundancy built in.
Theres nothing complicated about this setup, hes actually kept it quite simple.....
Piers H The thing is, when you shoot on a shitty camera, you have shitty footage. When you shoot at 8K 60FPS you have more control in post production environments with more resolution to work with.
You also have anazing footage when RUclips launches new features or changes the way it handles video compression.

That workflow can be improved and automated a bit more with some simple scripts and maybe a central program...The shared drives can be a little crazy too. Too much manual operations and steps is where you can have wrong files accidentally deleted.
+20 security points by blurring Linus' hands while he's typing a password. -100 Security point by using the built-in Administrator account. -500 points for not using AD.
Exactly my Thinking...
And with AD you can use DFS-R and for the mistakenly Delted Files you got a Backup + Shadow Copies.
Lol. I can hear/see the cringy culture shock as it emotionally sinks in you're working with HUNDREDS of Terabytes and maxing out a 10 Gbps card on occasion. Great Video Linus and team. I never realized how intense your production workflow really is. I still don't really grasp the concept of your workflow but that's okay. You're on a whole different level as far as a video production house.
How does Canada classify your company? Like a Hollywood production house?
Lastly, thank you for shooting on an iPhone and Android device. The video wasn't as solid as your R3D footage videos but it still came out really good.
Its all about time management. You want your staff and the machines they use to be as productive as possible. Imagine having to go around and manually insert/connect the Red camera mags into each of their PC's just to get the footage onto them. You don't do that, you download the footage onto a server that they can then all access... but you want to have fast connections between the workstations and the server too.
Then when you encode, you dont want your staff machines sitting there encoding while the editor then takes a break because they can't do anything, so you off load it onto another server for that...
Then there is back-ups...
I think they actually get treated like a movie produktion company. But thats more of a insurance thing i believe.
They buy servers by making videos about how they buy servers - SOLVE THE PARADOX

Pros: Zoom in, Render down (less noise), more Tracking Points, more Options overall
Cons: more storage space, longer encoding
Here is why ruclips.net/video/-W6JfiC-QBk/видео.html
and in 3 years from now all their videos are still usable. that means you basicly can get so much more content out of the stuff they film

I think one minute shorter.... 1336. Dang!
Nope, 13:36!
I watch below video counter, it's still 13:36 and not 13:37. Video editor by Linus missed the fun with 13:37 by one minute, did he NOT see it?
Do you not understand that there is a difference between 13:37 and 13:36? Haha Jesus!
If you did not know, the video length displayed in the recommendations/up next/autoplay is usually one second longer than the video length that is displayed WHILE you watch the video.
Many people crying over 'you only 1080p' are the same people who will never understand the basics of downscaling quality from raw footage. If you are working with textures for a game, you'll understand real quick why a 8000x8000 image downscale to 1024x1024 is a million times better than doing it from a 3000x3000 image. Same applies to video footage, a video that has 4k, downscaled on RUclips by their encoders, will be much better than uploading the same footage in 1080p directly and then has to be re-encoded by RUclips.
I don't know about a million times. Maybe 1.15 times better.
It's barely noticable, if at all.
Gay Gay yeah even 15% is a wild overestimate. Maybe possible on only the most extreme edge cases.
Where the big difference is isn't actually straight down-scaling, its that you can stabilize, reframe ect on the fly during editing if you shoot over resolution and a little wider on the lens. It also gives tools more information to work with in order to perform seemless changes, like rotoscoping without distorting edges. You can also adjust exposure or colors a bit in post without loosing information in the final output by using a wider dynamic range than the final uploaded video. This makes a big difference to real production workflows that can effect viewership.. frankly the tiny advantage in video quality from direct down-scaling does not... especially once its been re-rendered by youtube.
It doesn't drastically help, there is a barley noticeable difference
Linus I'd enjoy learning more about servers and related things. Purposes, uses, all that kind of thing. Basic home type stuff too. I've been out of the tech game for around 20 years and would love to get caught back up.

i have like 2-5 mbps -_-
I mean a 7200rpm HDD can achieve sequential read/write speeds somewhere around 200MB/s, for an SSD that's actually kinda crap.
there is a difference in transferring from a hdd to another hdd inside ur computer and transfering it via ethernet cable to another computers driver etc. different cables thus different speeds.
when I copy videos from my iphone I get get 4MB/s
yeah and they have a 10Gb/s network, which is pretty much a requirement for the kind of work they're doing. this didn't even come close to saturating the connection
13:11 Activate windows? xD
It'll be on a VM. Linus has already addressed this, that the risks for him and his business are so high that he wouldn't even risk buying a "grey market" key to activate something they use. Everything has a full price, bought from Microsoft product key except for I think one thing which he literally needed but couldn't get a legit key for. They'll have an unused product key marked for covering this machine in case of an audit.

Being a Final Cut Pro Editor,i have something similar.. except its a cluster of Mac minis specd out on cpu and ram.. so I can use compressor to transcode footage.
1:48 i thought those were rifles for a second, leaning against the desk
That'd be impossible since he lives in Canada.
@@sbdnsngdsnsns31312 you can own guns in Canada
wait those aren't SMGs?
@Linus Maybe try using TotalCommander instead of "Windows Explorer"
Servers need to be served by a server
Serverception
I mean, it's only 1 racks worth. There will be a lot more networking kit on site and off site storage. You could get redundant vm's (on prem, Colo or cloud) but then you need to risk analysis any downtime of the servers to see how much you're willing to spend on that solution
Hell yeah, great setup! Who in your organization designed the network and wrote the scripts for the watercooled server to auto start the transcodes. I love how you use automation to increase your peoples workflow rather than replace them. Keep up the good work.
Wait, the techlinked background isn't green screen?
Random Deslime No they build a lot of sets. For something that is seen often, using a real set looks better than a green screen, and makes the process simpler.
13:00 Has a server that costs more than my whole house
Still doesn't buy a Windows licence
Love it.
Statikk Shiv who cares lol
Statikk Shiv Windows Server licensing is stupid. Microsoft change the way it works like every other year. One note though is it when Microsoft do business audits, as long as you can prove you have a license, Windows doesn’t have to be activated, saving the hassles if you end up reinstalling windows multiple times in a month
Me, dumbass
Its not a server license though. its an editing pc.
Not exactly, depends if the PC is registered into an Active Directory, so the license is managed by the local server
Happy to see you grow this much
Always watched ur videos since I got internet access in 2011-12
To be really honest, I think linus would still have 6M subs even if he would shoot everything with his old iPhone 4S.
Favourite part by far: Dennis in his tank top
He super cute
rockifythis I mean if ur into that kind of thing
@@randomdefaults5108 i sure am, no homo tho
Why Linus tank tops doesn't have a discord channel yet?
They've got one lmao
Also yikes fix your spelling my dude
Maybe it was on purpose and there is a secret society for Linus that is obligated to making the geekiest looking tank tops?
I love ltt so much. But i couldnt really understand the server stuff. Until i recently need to do research on servers for my assignments. Im yoinking all these info baby
TFW you realize Linus has nicer monitors on his server's KVM than you do on your (only) gaming rig. Fuck.
