  • Just wanted to show you all my pet black widow. She is a Western Widow or Latrodectus hesperus. I found her out in front of my house and, unlike most people, I brought her into my house.

    I'm glad you have a jar friends that way you can find out exactly how how Western black widows temperament is. Their bites are not painful it's like maybe like a bee sting for a day. They won't bite you unless you are literally smushing them, there was a study showed that even if you messed up their web, or poked and prodded at them, they would do as you said runaway make themselves look small maybe throw some web I guess that ones new to me lol. But it's very rare that you'll receive a bite from one of these ladies and even if they do bite you it's 9 times out of 10 of warning bite. I legit stepped on one in my backyard, and she was forgiving enough to give me a warning bite, my foot on the one side swelled a little bit I couldn't wear shoes at school for 3 days because the shoe would scrape my bite, but I went to the doctor they gave me some antibiotics and other than a little bit of discomfort for the first day I wasn't in any real agony, and it went away. If you do get a full on serious bite, the worst it will be, is that you'll get sick for about 3 days tops, always go to the doctor though, you never know when you'll be allergic to something. And the three days of being sick I was talking about can be mildly unpleasant, obviously throwing up having a headache possible abdominal pain, but the spiders bite wouldn't kill you unless you were 10 lb and allergic to it at the same time. Western black widows are actually very smart, and very shy, they're the sweetest actually good luck spiders you'll ever come across. It's said that if there's a blackwidow in your area, they are Territorial and the smell of their venom keeps away other spiders for the most part. Knowing all this I hope you guys can be more familiar with my favorite silky lady. when does the person who made this video sees this please feel free to make a video of exactly what I just told you and tag me in it or something haha

      I love them them and my entire life have keep them as deeply cared for pets, as my mom loved them too, but since I've had babies I have had to unfortunately kill quite a few... 6 month old, 2 year old and 3 year old that all love to run/crawl around in the yard. Crazy where life takes you.

    We lost our last one to old age. Today I noticed another on the front porch, so I'm putting a habitat back together. However, the one on the porch is very small, and our local pet store doesn't carry crickets small enough for it. Can you suggest something to feed it, or would you recommend simply relocating it and waiting until we find a larger one?
    Also, as a fun note, our last one would drink openly. I had stones on the bottom, and I'd just spray until there was a few large droplets on it. She would walk over to it, and sink her little face into it, and drink until the droplet was about half the original size. I thought you might find it interesting.

      CaseFace my Charlotte started with house flies. Then a small recluse or two. She really liked a large black ant I fed her. She grew when I went out of town for 4 days. Then I fed her two black crickets. She LOVED them! I originally found her on a can we kept out back for dog food. Flies are attracted to dog food so she set up shop.

    I too keep a latrodectus hesperus! In slc,ut... her name is Minerva. I saved her life! And we are in the full throws of winter so I just couldn't bring myself to put her back out in the cold. She seems quite content in her terrarium. She's a juvenile so it's pretty rewarding to see her changing as she grows. Thanks for being a fellow spider comrade 🤘🖤

    Currently have one as my “tenant” living in my shower. She’s gotten a bit bigger and it’s the middle of winter, possibly considering of putting her in an enclosure (instead of my shower). Or letting her go when it gets warmer...🤔
    Did I mention her name is Marlene? Still a juvenile, had her for 2 months already. First appeared in my shower on Oct. 31st, 2019🎃 totally agree with everything you are saying in this video! I think Marlene’s the same species, or Southwestern (from the top of my head, probably just Western). My girl gets prey from her front legs- first she’ll “tap” it or something. I give her flies, a wasp one time, small centipede, and a mayfly once. Whatever insect I can catch and disable with water (like the wasp or fly). She also likes to wrap them with silk and then tow away her prey into her corner- the corner she uses to hide from when I use the shower and in general shelter.

    • @na00097
      @na00097 4 года назад +2

      if I get any hate:
      My shower is handheld so whenever she gets too close or isn’t in her corner while I’m showering, I’ll sprinkle some water to show her who’s boss!
      Afterall, she’s my tenant and I’m her landlady. No web spinning past this point!🖐😤
      But I’ll consider getting her an enclosure for peace of mind.

    You have been blessed keeping her. I have a black widow spider living in a branch that looks like Cthulhu from the Lovecraft stories in the front yard of my house, and she is named Atropa after the member of the Three Fates who cuts the thread of life, but she's called Atty for short. She guards our lemon balm from intruders and is a joy to have (she thinks my dad is the coolest, she keeps him company while he's watering the front garden during the evening.
    Yours is so patient, waiting for her supper.

    She's so lovely!!! She looks almost exactly like my widow haha you take wonderful care of her.
    ... I've been having some problems feeding actually, and it's hard to find other widow owners. Do you think you can help me out? Charlotte has a door on the front of her tank as well as a lid that opens up. I've been putting crickets in the front door, but they aren't getting stuck in the web. I don't have any other spiders, so I don't want a tub of mealworms lying around going bad... how can I make sure she's eating properly?
    I would pick up the crickets with tweezers and put them in the top (I try to actually) but they still tumble through the web and she never gets them. Should I be trying harder to wedge them into the web? Or will she go for them when she gets hungry? Looking at yours I probably overfeed her actually...
    She's still pretty new to her current tank. Maybe it'll be easier after she's had more time to fill the gaps on her bassinet.

    • @smokeybear1925
      @smokeybear1925 4 года назад +1

      Quinn Hiboux I know I’m late, but widows are very sensitive to vibration, if she’s hungry, she’ll find it. Is it possible you are feeding her too much?

    • @CaressFromGod
      @CaressFromGod 4 года назад

      @@smokeybear1925 That's possible. I started giving her smaller crickets so that she could eat in smaller portions, but that's made it more difficult to tell if she's eating lol she's also getting very old. I've had her for a year and a half, and she was full grown when I got her haha
