You’ve got to understand that John’s first manager destroyed his career by making the wrong song choices and career direction. He wanted John to appeal to the oldies and be disliked by the teen set .. go figure. As a result John eventually got dumped by the industry, probably late 70’s and was absolutely broke. Glen Wheatly came along and turned everything around for John and as a result we’ve been given the gift of John for the past 50 plus years.

John did do the pub circuit too. I remember going to Ritchies Nightspot in Melbourne to see him and his then band. Early 80's. One month they would have Jon English and the next month John Farnham. I still think one of his best albums is Uncovered. And I listen to John every day, litterally!

Why was John not accepted as a credible singer. ...Why did the writers of You're the Voice not want him to record it......one word...SADIE!!!
Although the song made him an instant pop star and it was the biggest selling single of the 60's in Australia, that image of 60's teen idol stuck. Plus the fact his management chose older style songs for him. He wasn't given much of a chance to explore his own passion for rock in his earlier days.
It took him years to shed that mantle and for people to take him seriously. And for him to finally start recording the kind of music he had always wanted to record. Thank for for Glenn Wheatley

    • @aries898
      @aries898 Год назад +5

Yes! And that guy that was co writer for you’re the voice had lived in australia for a bit of time in the 70’s when sadly John did not receive the respect he eventually got when he released you’re the voice….. so he remembered him as this comical cabaret style artist who sang the ‘pop’ hits of the day and not the type of person who could convey the serious message of his song, which ultimately John did in the end

    • @carolynh8866

such a shame that john got pigeon holed as old scool caberet for so long. My dear friend John really did it tough.
The English song writers, Chris Thompson, Maggie Ryder ,Andy Qunta and Keith Ried. They didn't want John to have anything to do with the song, they said his was not credible.Johns manager tried to sign him up with a label but no record company was interested. Glen Wheatley, John's manager sold his house to record " Whispering Jack " and begged the English song writers to allow John to record it. They produced the album on a shoe string budget. It went to number one around the world EXCEPT the USA where it peaked at number 82.

Without Glenn Wheatley, John would never have been the icon he is today. John and Glenn’s friendship is one of those once in a lifetime, enduring, heart rending friendships that we all wish we could have. Glenn will also be revered as much as John, “You’re The Voice” was technically recorded illicitly without the songwriters consent but thankfully the songwriters allowed it to be released. 2022 was a horrendous year of loss…we lost Glenn from Covid complications, then Livvy from cancer and add John’s own cancer diagnosis…. Hopefully our John will recover… who cares if he never sings again… he is our heart and soul. ❤

    Yeah Nick I can’t wait .
John was signed to RCA in America .
RCA America told John You’re The Voice wouldn’t sell in America because the song was too lyrically serious protest songs was out of the American public interest . RCA America wanted Pressure Down as the first single from Whispering Jack not You’re The Voice even that You’re The Voice was top 20 hit in Canada a top 10 hit in the UK , New Zealand and some European countries but number 1 in Australia , Germany , Sweden , Denmark & Switzerland .
RCA took to long Whispering Jack didn’t get a release date. RCA America did release 1988 album Age Of Reason and decided to add You’re The Voice in after Two Strong Hearts charted in the American adult contemporary charts You’re The Voice got a official American release 2 years after the Australian release about 18 months after the rest of the world it charted in the 80’s on the billboard top 100 in America.
John was also reluctant to tour the USA after his 4 years with the Little River Band constantly touring the USA . He did few promotional tours that the recording company asked for , but that was it .
For Australian artists to break into the American market they have to be there nearly 24,7 to promote the hell out of themselves.
Australian market is quite simple compare to the complex American market .

In Australia there was a lot of glam rock and other rock.Singers/bands were mostly glam or grungy. Long , dirty hair was a thing. And John was clean and wouldn’t play dress-ups. He was a SINGER!

Had to share. Tonight I got to see this Documentary and I highly recommend it. For me, I felt it all and even found a tear in my eye. Having had an 18 year association with the Australian music industry during that time, so much hit home. The greedy agents who don't give a sh%t about the act, lie and steal more than their share, the record companies who can't see talent when it's in their face. I remember being told how John was playing the leagues clubs with only a handful in the audience, which I found absurd having been a fan since the "Raindrops ...." days. Unfortunately, there have been and will be, so many talented performers here in Australia that will never get an opportunity to show their talent to the world. At least John had a friend like Glen who was there for him. John could've easily have ended up like most Australian talents, lost, ignored, used and tossed away. Such a heart-breaking industry. I thoroughly enjoyed that John showed them and beat the odds. Love him always. Such a gentleman, such an amazing talent. Wishing him a speedy recovery. PS America entertainment industry didn't want to know about him, that's why you never got to know of him till now. Thank goodness for the internet, now you are finding out about some of our finest..John, Jimmy Barnes, Renee Geyer, Guy Sebastian, Delta Goodrem etc..etc...etc

Yes there's some "interesting" performances, but there's also some absolutely top notch talent too. I often go searching RUclips afterwards for various artists to see what they have done outside eurovision. I've bought albums and watched (streamed) concerts, there's a whole world of talent that we never see simply because they are from a country that my local record industry ignores.

We are not just one sided and love and appreciate great music and artists from anywhere in the world. The John Farnham movie is a story of 2 men. Glen Wheatley who believed John had the talent and the greatest voice in the world. To morgage his own home to pay for a recod deal and record the Album Whispering Jack, who rose from being unwanted by record companies and radio stations, playing pub gigs to 30 to 50 people. To become THE VOICE
John Farnham The World's Greatest Singer.

I’m anxious for you to watch the Classic Jack & Whispering Jack concert DVDs I sent you. I hope you will enjoy them! Not sure if the documentary will reach outside of Australia. But I am happy to send a copy to you when it does officially come out on DVD. Thank you for this lovely reaction 💗💗💗💗

People didn't think John wasn't a credible singer because his first manager marketed him as a novelty act (you've heard Sadie the Cleaning Lady 😅) He was also seen as the clean-cut boy-next-door, and it took years for him to shake off that image. He's earned every bit of the credibility that he enjoys today 😊

Every major recording company saw John as a pop singer, so they didn't believe he could transition to an adult entertainer; this lead John having to survive by performing in country clubs and pubs. Glenn Wheatley(former Master's Apprentices guitarist/singer), who was manager of Little River Band; was amazed where John was performing, so he decided to take things into his hands and manage John. And as they say, THE REST IS HISTORY.

A lot of Australian artists and groups from the 50's through to the 70's, had to move to either England or America to get noticed; it were those people who started to open eyes, towards artists and groups from Australia and New Zealand. Where as, Australians through those early days, were bombarded with English and American music; and that was what our homegrown talent had to contend with, such that they made some money by covering overseas artists and bands.

There is a whole part 1 of John Farnham's singing career in Australia that apparently you know nothing about. Bad management, wrong career direction, poor investments, close to poverty, John feeling down and depressed .... but he survived and triumphed and is loved by Aussies. His partnership with Glenn Wheatley was true Aussie mateship. I think there is a book coming out, too?

John was never a has been, he was trapped in his King of Pop image and not allowed to grow and explore his real musical talent, the music production machine tends to type cast and pigeon hole, fortunately Glen W. stepped in and took John on, he knew a great performer and vocalist when he heard one the outcome of this belief was our win. Thank you the late Glen and thank you John for so many years of great performances. Watching and listening to the younger generations finding you and marvelling at your beautiful voice singing most musical genres with ease not mention your friendly, generous, no tickets, fun persona we love you John.

Glenn couldn’t get anyone in Australia or America to sign John. Out of John’s first 25 years he only made money for 5 of those years. He sold his home and everything he owned, he deserved for the world to know him. Thank God for Glenn Wheatley with his love and belief in John and yes, many thought his music was irrelevant until Glenn made the Whispering Jack album with his own money.
The First Lady talking was Olivia Newton John. The lady with the long blonde hair who said he was missing in action was Gaynor, Glenn’s wife. Jill, John’s wife stayed with him.
I watched John cry when Celine Dion told John she was always his number one fan. He thought she was being nice but she meant it. Richard Marx calls him the best voice anywhere alive today. So many greats came here to sing with him. Reactors maybe making him famous now but does John earn from that? Or does he only earn from his Official RUclips page?
I put off watching this until 10 hours ago. Then I watched it twice and cried. He is loved and he always will be.

Johnny Farnham as he was known wasn't seen as a credible singer. He was always seen as the 'Sadie The Cleaning Lady' guy.
I went to a rugby Grand Final back in the 80s and people were throwing food items at him - Seriously!
It was Glen Wheatly who reinvented John Farnham with the album 'Jack's Back' . He took off and the rest is history as they say ❤❤

John sang "Sadie the Cleaning Lady" and he was the goody two shoes darling of the grandmas. Now he jokes about it, which is typical for him. When he got married he lost the teen girl crowd and he really only appealed to older people. His voice has always been amazing. Funnily enough, he appeared on a show called Hey Hey Its Saturday and sang You're The Voice. He was plugged by Molly Meldrum and his career was relaunched. Even in Australia, it took us years to realise just how good he is. In my opinion, it is the best male singing voice I have ever heard. For female vocalist Australia will field Vanessa Amorosi, and on guitar we will have Tommy Emmanuel.
